Thats a pretty good looking watch. For me, the SLA models are HUGE value! Even Omega cannot compete with this watch. Rolex is not even close! And remember, for the price of 1 Submariner you can own three or four SLA line of dive watches. The 8L’s are an amazing movement!
I own Omega’s, Longines, and several other Swiss and German divers…and Seiko SLA’s dominate them all!

An omega seamaster is about 4k in the UK on a rubber strap. So why do people moan about these higher end pieces, price ? High quality steel , high quality movement, great fit and finish. I doubt omega spend as much time making their watches as seiko do. The new bond watch in titanium on a NATO strap cost nearly 8k , but nobody moans much about that. The only difference is seiko makes watches at all price points, but the sla models are as good if not better than their Swiss rivals , at similar cost. Seiko have been one of the most innovative watchmakers of all time, so to scoff at the prices, just shows ignorance to a great watchmaker.
Well said. The big issue is you can't show off with a Seiko. It is just the way the world works. edit: even tho bond wore a tuna and other seikos ;)
@@EscapementWatch we don't need to show off with our seikos, we know how great they are. It doesn't matter if they make a budget £100 one, a classy 1k , mid tier one, or a stunning 5k higher end one, they all have a certain charm and beauty about them. I've owned a lot of watches in my years , but seiko still pull on my heart strings more than any other brand. It all started when I was in my teens and I noticed this guy with a really cool watch on his wrist , and it was the original Willard, and stood out like no watch I've ever seen before. My friend at work came in with a poque on his wrist and that blue red bezel with yellow gold face , just confirmed my love for this great brand. I've enjoyed some really nice Swiss watches too, but there is just something special to me about a seiko. I've loved every one of my many seikos through my life, and can honestly say I've missed all of them a bit if I've sold them on. I've got the spb 051, and I still love it and think it's better than the spb143 models that came out later . I do have a large wrist at under 8 inches , so size is not an issue to me. I recently got a sla043 and I love the quality, but it does feel a tad small on my wrist. But I might flip it and get a sla Willard as a 42 to 45 mm watch probably works better for me.
But the sla043 is a little beauty .
@@ptmonroe3101 , the movement might be flashier , but I doubt it's better performing over time, as this is made in grand seiko factory . Ceramic face does not make it better, more work is probably involved in the seiko with its deep blue face and high polished indices. Case brushed by hand . Ever brilliant steel, better bezel action . Only 1700 made worldwide compared to 100 of thousands omegas or more that are mass produced. Fit and finish in the seiko is every bit as good , if not better than the omega. A few watch reviewers have said they think the omegas are poorly made and overpriced, for the quality too.
I love omegas too, but to argue that it's a better watch overall to seikos sla models is just ignorance. At roughly around 4k on silicone , it feels the seiko is a lot more exclusive.
Apart from regulating the 8l35 movement, I don't see how this seiko could be improved in anyway by way of construction, it's almost perfection. Omegas on the other hand , have a poor bezel action , no grip , hard to turn, a useless wart that most people hate, and a sharp bracelet if you pay an extra 1k to get it on one.
So yes I think this seiko holds up pretty well to your bog standard mass produced omega at a the 4k price point.

The seiko movement they use is found in much cheaper watches, there's no way you can justify the price no matter what argument you put forward, especially when people are comparing them to omega and rolex, really?
They moan about higher prices because the seiko watch isn't worth half that price, for one, it shouldn't be yet another Ltd ed, it shouldn't have prospex x on it, and it should be using a spring drive movement, also it should have the initials GS on the dial, then maybe the price would be more acceptable, just my opinion, ✌️
I just bought mine few weeks ago, my daily wear were a batman and a sub. This watch, for me, is better. The steel first of all and the craftmanship GS put on it, it is a joy to look at. The vestibility despite the larger measures, I often forget to wear it (but then I look at it, the dial the steel, the cristal, the finitures....joy). The movement is great too probably Rolex as a more precise movement but it is a very slight difference. Is a grail watch. You cannot judge it if you did not have it in your hands.
i love my omega and my tudor heritage .but I think I need to have this SLA too. 🤔
OMG. Worth every penny for sure. I’m going to optimistically assume they have a volume model in the “basic boring black on bracelet” configuration and start saving now.

You sold me on this. Just got one from Japan, at a much lower cost than the initial release price. So happy all round.
I feel like this is the mechanical version of the PROSPEX LX Spring Drive line. It’s a beautiful beast for sure. In my opinion, the only thing holding high-end SEIKO mechanicals back is movement regulation which is subpar considering the price. They should regulate them to chronometer standards in 5 positions so it doesn’t overlap with GS’s 6 position adjustment offering.
They already are regulated, just not to GS standards. I have an SLA065 which uses the same 8L movement and is currently running at + 2 spd. This is within COSC.

The movement is based on the Grand Seiko calibre 9S55 (which has now been replaced by the 9S65, with an extended power reserve). This movement runs at 4Hz and can store up to 50 hours of power reserve. It is also known to run within chronometric standards. The Ever-Brilliant Stainless Steel is beautiful, especially with the Zaratsu polishing. Add to that the movement is hand assembled at the same plant as those for the Grand Seiko. I kind of see the reason for the pricing but that price would buy a Seiko with a Spring Drive movement in it. Beautiful watch all things considered.
One could polish a lump of charcoal until (1,000,000 years) it turns into a diamond?
The movement can run within Cosc, yeah, like literally any movement. But what does that matter, they have a way higher tolerance (-10/+15) out of the factory. Its luck of the draw at the end. If they really would handassamble all 8L35 AND regulated then, why not say so. A few years ago, this movement was in 2 watches, the SBDX001/017 and in a tuna, and even then, it was luck how it ran. And now its in more almost 10 watches and it runs better magically? Wont believe that, without a clear statement from Seiko, everything else is guesswork.
ANd yes, this movement has good quality. Its sits between a 2824-2 and Inhouse Movements like Tudors MT or Rolex 3xxx, but Seiko really needs to make sure it runs better. Tudor has COSC and ontop Inhouse +-4s/d, Omega has 0+5s/d

Out of all the vintage reissue line I think only this one and the SLA037 are the only ones to get. The everbrillian steel is just special and these are the closest to look and feel of the original.
Seiko has always been one of my favorite brands. I have seven presently in my collection from the brand. With that said, I don’t know if I will be able to bring myself to spend four grand on the Seiko. I have two luxury divers, An Omega 300 professional and a Tudor Pelagos. They both cost approximately the same price as this Seiko But I wouldn’t trade. My head says it’s a good value but my heart just isn’t in it. Thanks for the great review!
If it had the spring drive I might consider buying for this price.
Hopefully they bring out a non limited edition in a simple black dial with white markers etc. A nice alternative to the SBDX001/017/023 and thinner case so more wearable. I’ll keep my 017 though.

Great review man! A beautiful watch and great to see mighty S starting to make top quality divers in the 42mm range - thin too. Case is at Rolex level, dial maybe just behind Omega/Rolex but no dust! The movement is tried and true. And hand finished/assembled - that really means something! I think the watch is close to the money. If it came with a bracelet (and fantastic strap/NATO), it would be totally worth it. But, I won't pull the trigger because of that X! This is top class, classic Japanese design with a crude, derivative, eye grabbing western logo!
The nato it comes with is top notch! The best in the business comfort/quality wise.
I would argue the ever brilliant steel is above Rolex

Great finishing and details - hands and dial looked better than the Tudor, which I guess they should at 6K but still very impressive!
Idk man I love how chunky the LX is. It is also extremely light making it wearable. People who haven’t worn the watch don’t understand that weight is the biggest factor determining comfort.
@@Killua_Overwatch I owned the LX. Absolutely stunning and certainly light weight but just too thick for my liking. If you never have to wear sleeves it might be fine.

I've always wondered why Seiko had never offered a traditional crown tube and gaskets on the crown/crown tube on their mid to upper level dive watches. This is definitely a move in the right (professional watch) direction.
They want us to buy new watches once the crown tube is stripped

Now that is an impressive movement.
Back in the 1980s I worked for Montgomery Ward department stores. They were going through a bit of an identity crisis at the time. Known mostly for value, and a great option for the middle and lower class, they wanted to polish their image, and compete with stores like Macys rather than go the J.C. Penny route.
I'm still trying to decide if this is what Seiko is going through. They keep making great watches, but are they pricing out their base?
They have stated the pivot to go up market was a NEED to survive. Apple watch has done a lot of damage to Seiko. Apple is the largest watch maker in the world! Seiko realized early after the apple watch success and the rise of fakes like steeldive, hiemdollars and proxima and parnis etc.... they are not too big to fail.
I am late to this party. Bought a sbdx049. Jdm version. I wanted a GS ti spring drive diver. Too much money, too bulky a watch. This is the perfect lux diver for me. An amazing watch at retail. Outstanding at what I payed. Also own a sla043 . Stunning retro tool watch. Tough!

Fair enough bro! I always end up never wearing my Seiko divers on bracelet and really do believe Seiko divers should be on straps like they were in the past. But I know todays modern buyer demands bracelets! So will we ever see it? I'm not sure...Depends on how stubborn seiko is with the history aspect.
Do it , you get more for less money. Also fyi I hate the clasp on the mm300 but it's easy to replace.

The “L” after the alloy number designates Low Carbon. This formulation was introduced to reduce corrosion in welded joints. By reducing carbon, there is less available to bond with chromium during welding. Losing chromium to chromium carbide formation depletes chromium from the surrounding alloy, reducing its ability to form the rust-preventative chromium oxide surface layer characteristic of all stainless steels.

Thanks for making the first good review of this watch. It really is a nice watch. And they improved so many things that people were critical of on the MM300. I really like the 8L35. I think its in a great movement and is way better than the 6R35. When i was watching some other reviews on this watch people were criticizing the 8L35 like it was some cheap NH35. It’s not. It’s a great movement and nicer than a sellita or ETA 2824 in my experience. Also the fact that they made the dimensions more wearable for people with smaller wrists is a great thing. One of the best statements you made was that some people just want a 4600 dollar watch to have a different brand name. It’s true. Rolex could literally make A Hamilton khaki and put Rolex on the dial and people would be happy to be 4600 for it. Watch collectors can be extremely snobby when it comes to brand names.
Yes the 8L is an older grand seiko movement with less decoration. Hand assembled with no stamped parts like lower end seiko movements. All milled steel and MEMS technology to produce it. Rhodium coated to protect it long term as well. It is many leagues higher then ETA. It stays consistent throughout its life cycle as it avoids drift better then most. Seiko doesn't regulate them to give you a reason to buy a GS. But as you saw in this video its pretty good. And they are SUPER easy to regulate. Tiny screw turn to fast or slow.
This looks beautiful. I'm so torn between a number of the marine master models such as the 047J but I read that the strap on it its not great for the price.
yeah the mm300 bracelets aren't great. If you can swing it get this one. The steel is worth it.
Great video! As a Tudor fanboy I have been triggered at various points in this video lol. Personally I think it would help to brand these as Grand Seikos at this price point & fit them with the regulated GS version of this movement. A bracelet option wouldn't go a miss either!
hahah I love my Tudor bb58 the style is so me. So although the bezel doesn't quite line up. Its dusty and has the worst hand finishing I've seen in 2 years on any watch, I still love it!
@@EscapementWatch I've got the blue dial version & the hand finishing is really good under a loop & I can't find any dust either, I wonder if there is any difference in the finishing process between the silver & gilt hands?
nah its probably just luck. But to find the dust you have to hit the light on the side of the crystal and look with the loop on the sides. If you look head on like normal you WONT SEE THEM. Its hard to find them. But the way I shoot. I can see all dust on all the watches. Every watch is going to be luck. I just reviewed a rolex air king had soooo sooo much dust. 5x my tudor. never seen a rolex like that before! Most are very little to non like this seiko. The rolex 36mm explorer I just reviewed had a chip in the dial. A defect I showed in the macros. So just random luck with the finishing.

Was looking at the SNR045J1 and mm300 at a local AD, but they were too large for my wrist.
Does the SLA wear smaller than the SNR? Also might end up getting a black bay 58 instead because the high end Seiko wear so large.

Mm300 has a stronger 12 o’clock indice sheild, this is a bit more tapered like the mm200
Isn´t this like our prayers have been heard? A smaller marinemaster with the 8L35 movement! It lacks the magic of the sbdx001, but I think they will come with more non limited editions of this one with that superb movement in different colours and themes - for a much lower price. Don´t you think?
Limited edition adds about 150-500 extra in Seiko's so the price wont be much lower "if" they do make a non-limited. Which I doubt it. And more colors? maybe next year or the year after, wont be often.

@@EscapementWatch I love my SPB187, which I'm wearing as I type this...but the hands, the indices, the movement, and the bezel of the SLA055 are substantially nicer. The Zaratsu hand polished case of the SLA055 is also noticeably better than the machine polished case of the SPB187...although I don't say that to take anything away from the very good case and overall finishing of the SPB187.
All that being said, the SPB187 is about as nice of a watch as you can buy for around $1,000 and mine spends more time on my wrist than any of my other watches. I consider it a good value...if only for the beautiful casework and dial, and its perfect size. But it isn't a replacement for a watch like the SLA055, and it shouldn't be thought of as so. As you pointed out, it costs 1/4 the price of the SLA055...and if you focus on the details, it's not hard to see why Seiko believes that they're justified in asking so much more for the SLA.
The minute and second hands as well as shield seem longer on this mm200 compared to mm300

This feels more solid. The crystal I did not take out of the case so I could not measure just the glass. But I image it will be at least 3.5mm thick crystal.
Agree with you about the crown. Don't need it signed but if they do it's better with the word Seiko as opposed to the S
Yeah once I got the king seiko I really started to like the word SEIKO on the crown, clean and simple over the stylized "S"
There’s a lot to like on this new Seiko but it needs a stainless steel bracelet, made of the same metal as the case.

Love Seiko, I have a SPB143 on a rubber dive strap, took the bracelet off and it's in the box. Seiko divers are meant to be on rubber.

Yes watch prices keep going up. But to get a skilled GS watchmaker to hand assemble your movement and finish the case probably costs seiko a pretty penny!
