Honestly they really need to move the X onto the crown, rather than the dial

I agree. The X looks hideous on the dial. The Crown would be a perfect place for the X. Great call there.

Thanks for the excellent review. I have owned the SLA055 for a few months. After many strap swaps, I settled on the original Seiko SLA021 strap. I find the chocolate bar to be the wrong fit for this watch and I would recommend the 021 strap or a black Tropic.

It would be cool if Seiko came out with a serial production model of one of these on bracelet. With these limited production models, I wonder what parts availability will be down the road. This is primarily why I find the mm300 a more appealing design. It is a model they’ve produced for over 25 years with only minor changes.

Kind of funny. After I said I couldn't buy this one, after buying another SLA Seiko, I did.
    Jdm sbdx049.
What a stunning watch! The finishing and over all construction is GS. Think this will be my grail diver in my collection. Not inexpensive, but really good value.
Retail of $4600 for the SLA 055. The SLA 043 is $4500. The 043 is a durable tool watch with a soal. For me, a special one. The 055 is another level up in case complexity, and finishing. The indices and dial are GS quality . The 055 is a luxury diver to be proud of.
I was looking at a GS ti spring drive diver. Great watch, but the cost and size on wrist gave me second thoughts. I wanted to see it in person before I spent almost $7000 .
Very happy with my decision to buy the 055 instead. Better fit on my wrist, and my pocket book.

  • @Koishishibaman
    @Koishishibaman Před rokem +8

Stunning diver! The case finishing is outstanding. That steel is very tough, but I wonder how the polished sides held up?
Your thought on the seichu straps is right on. Great looking and feeling, but it makes the watch sit too high on the wrist. I have a Willard with the green, and the gray strap. I use the watch on a vintage leather strap.
The ever brilliant steel is the real deal. I have a SLA043, and wear it at work on a farm some times. The case is brushed, but not a mark on it.
GS does have a sport/dress watch with that steel. SLGA013. Case and bracelet. Very special, but expensive one. Around $9000. Really want this one, but not my bank account.
Great review on a stunning watch. I want it! Can't, just bought a SLA049. Naomi Uemura rocks!

I broke down and bought a jdm sbdx049. All I can say is wow. It is an amazing watch. The finishing on the case is amazing. Beautiful dial! Looked under a lense at it and found the 12,9,6,3 indices have grooves in them like GS. Nice touch.
Also have a sla043. Gorgeous watch. One of my favorite watches. Brushed case, kind of a tool watch. Very durable!
Comparing the two. Think there is good value in the sbdx049. Tool watch vs lux diver.

I have the SLA075 and love it. I am normally a 39-41mm guy, but this case wears great. The 075 is 95% identical to the 057 except $2,800 U.S only edition and not $4,500 like this, because this one is a Limited Edition. The 075 has a gray fume dial. Trust me a $2,800 U.S. only Seiko is also limited edition by default. I doubt I will ever see another person wearing my same watch. As the current or prior owner of Seamaster, Black Bay 58, and Sea-Dweller, I can tell you this watch is premium. Put a fancy Swiss name on the dial and it is $6K-10K. Mine is running ballpark one second a day.

The newcomer is great. Nice finish and execution overall. But for whatever reason, I still prefer the MM200. Maybe because it's more closely inline with the MM300, which is my favorite. I don't quite know what to make of this watch.

The overall design of this watch is inspired by the Seiko 1968 Diver’s 300m watch - which was powered by the highest of world standards hi-beat calibre and was worn for the first-ever Japanese Mount Everest expedition.
In this modern version, several technical specifications have been upgraded and updated. The watch features the high-grade 8L35 mechanical calibre which was specially designed for diver’s watches. Consisting of 192 parts created with precise machining techniques, this timepiece is hand-assembled and adjusted by watchmakers at the Shizukuishi Watch Studio in Morioka in the north of Japan.
The case, bezel and crown are all made from Seiko’s exclusive “Ever-Brilliant Steel” - with its brilliant white hue, this grade of steel is more corrosion resistant than that which is used in most high-end watches today.* To further ensure the watch’s durability, the crown is not screwed directly into the case but locked into a separate component that is built into the case and so can be more easily replaced.
Prospex is a combination of the words ‘Professional’ and ‘Specifications.’ These timepieces are designed to be practical, reliable and durable within extreme or everyday environments, for experts, sports lovers and adventure seekers alike. Since launching Japan’s first diver’s watch in 1965, Seiko’s innovative watchmaking has changed global dive watch standards.
*This material is used extensively in the surfaces of marine structures and vessels because of its extreme corrosion resistance in sea water. It has a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) value 1.7 times higher than that of the grade of steel used in most high-end watches. PREN is a widely accepted standard used to measure corrosion resistance.
      Model Specification: SLA055J1
The case is made of ever-brilliant steel. The case measures 42.6 mm in diameter.
Securing the watch is a silicone strap. A second strap is included. It's created using a traditional Japanese braiding technique called Seichu. The material that is used in this strap is strong and resistant to sunlight, making it perfect for Antarctic expeditions.
The watch features a black unidirectional bezel.
An anti-reflective dual-curved sapphire crystal protects the blue dial.
      Luminescent hands and hour-markers.
      Water-resistant to 200 metres or 20 bars.
Features on the model include a date display and a stop-seconds hand function. The watch has a screw-down crown.
Movement type - Automatic with calibre 8L35.
      Limited to 1300 pieces.

I mean when you consider that accuracy variance is similar to a Top Grade ETA 2892, you understand that it's more about creating separation between Grand Seiko. Seiko is just more transparent about the maximum deviation and state -10 to +15 vs. Adding the additional marketing fluff of +/-4 to +/-15 that the Swiss use to market the Top Grade ETA 2892. It's basically just -15 to +15 with the implication that you may get better at closer to +/-4, while only covering the wider 30 second tolerance between +/-15spd as within warranty vs. The tighter 25spd window Seiko guarantees.
