The Rolex Submariner is the most desirable watch on earth and is well worth its asking price, but how does it stack up against Seiko's newest offering?
Can the cheaper Seiko even stand a chance vs the mighty behemoth which is Rolex?
The Rolex Chronergy Escapement began life as a Seiko patent and was the Rolex "proof of concept" and reason for developing this new escapement system.

Will always pick SEIKO Anytime. Sold all my swiss watches but kept and added more Seiko in my collection. My nature of work and the things I do in the real world, I don't have to worry about what happens to my seiko. It never failed me, I have dropped them, bumped them, do crazy stuff with seiko on my wrist and never sent any of my watches for servicing yet they never failed and still accurate. My swiss watches? more on marketing, special materials, and being fragile. Even for my special occasion where I have to wear a suite, I'd wear my Seiko Cocktail or the Orient Bambino.

The ever brilliant steel is durable. I wear my SLA 043 to work on a farm. My SLA 039 went to Japan for service, came back with some travel scuffing on the side case. Cape cod cloth restored it to new. Own GS, and SLA divers. No rolex.

I have the sla043, and it's a great watch. Retail is 4k compared to rolexes 8k. But rolex include a great bracelet and use luxury materials like white gold and platinum . So considering this I would say , both are priced about right. The sla may hold it's value over time , but the rolex is something else. The sla will be more exclusive as under 2k units are produced. The sla biggest fault is seiko not regulating the movement , but it's biggest triumph is it's build quality. It's hard to say which is the better watch taking everything into account . Both are fantastic in different ways. One thing I will say is, I wouldn't pay over retail just to get a rolex , that's for sure !!!

I own both watches and while I would not trade my Sub for the Seiko, I think the Seiko is just as good and a much better value for what it is. I paid $3500 for mine new and it was totally worth it! The finishing on the Seiko is much better than say, Tudor and as good as Omega and even Rolex, in my opinion. I put a high quality jubilee bracelet on my SLA and it is now one of my favorite watches. I was not a big fan of that black rubber strap and did not feel it complemented the overall quality of the watch itself. Thanks for the video and while I'm not sure it is better than the Rolex, it is just as good for a lot less $$!

This BATTLE was fun to make! been fighting the "C" V1rus all week but still wanted to get this out. If you are a Rolex fan and are offended do not take it so seriously, these are for fun. And Seiko fans same thing. Battles are NOT REVIEWs. They are a fun way to pit two watches against each other. I understand that I could have a worse example of a Seiko in the future or better example of a Rolex in the future. The nature of watches is that each one is made different. One Rolex is going to have tons of dust, scratches, others will have none. Out of the 10 I've reviewed I'd say 2 were bad. So 20%. This one is one of them. I didn't give the Seiko movement enough time to adjust on the 3rd round like I did with the Rolex so that's why we took the 5 number as the 4th. If your an old sub you will understand that easily. I asked SII instruments and they told me high end movements like the 8L use spron 610 but in the same email told me to confirm with Seiko. So maybe a language barrier but even if the mainspring is 510 or made of cheese we can see how it performs is like a highly tuned hairspring! Keeping everything steady in all positions. A GEM! Lastly if I missed anything let me know original video was 50 minutes long and boring so we trimmed the waffling as best we could!

Great video as always. I own a Rolex rootbeer two-tone and mm300 sla047j. Take away the gold factor from my Rolex. When I sit them next to each other, the Seiko is equally as impressive, if not more special, on its finish (keep in mind I paid $20,800 AUD for my Rolex and only $3600AUD for sla047j), which is mind-blowing when you think of the price difference.
But when it comes to the conversation of the movement, because of Seiko's unwillingness to regulate 8l35, the Rolex leaves the Seiko in the dust for accuracy! I leave my Rolex for five days in the box while maintaining winding it every second day, so it still runs, it doesn't lose time. If I did the same for the 8l35, I would lose a minute which is quite sad for a watch that is meant to have a fantastic GS movement.
I see comments about people saying, "I would never pay that much for a Seiko" and that a Seamaster or black bay is better. It drives me nuts because, owning both those watches previously, I can safely say the Seiko finish on SLA models is way better! But I don't bother to argue because of the weak movement. I know it has potential, but as it is now, it's pitiful. Maybe because I'm a performance guy rather than a looks guy when it comes to cars, it has also translated over to watches. In cars, the most important thing is a powerful engine that runs flawlessly, not an engine that leaves the factory, and the engineers say, hopefully, you are lucky and got one of the engines that run well!

Great battle, man! Awesome macro. I'm fortunate to have a few modern Rolex divers, but my heart lies with Seiko - particularly at SLA level. I think their value is great and long term you won't lose: the ltd Seiko market will rise as more people get educated as to the strength of Seiko. Obviously, it's unlikely to match Rolex for residuals, but that's not why we're here, eh? Get well soon! My objective (and long!) observation of the two brands' dive watches is as follows (based on 4 8L36 divers, 2 8L55 divers and 4 Rolex divers):
Dive heritage: Rolex have been at dive watches longer, but Seiko ARE pro dive watches. Only Citizen gets close. Seiko/Rolex are the two leviathans of the dive watch world. Rolex has more experience with luxury timepieces, but Seiko is catching up fast - when a GS or SLA is as wearable as a Sub, Rolex will be in serious trouble. No winner here.
In use (as in professional diving, forestry, farming, mountaineering, motorcycling (including off road), cycling, shooting:
Both very tough, both will scratch, ding and suffer damage to bezel mechanisms, bracelets will eventually wear out, but both will run and run, reliably with only periodic service (Seiko cheaper, but less convenient). For me, Seiko cases are more comfortable. No winner.
Water resistance: Both better than you! Seiko ISO rated, both better than advertised, Seiko massively so. A Tuna matches the Deepsea, all are easily Scuba/Tech ready. Seiko doesn't really make a Sea-Dweller rival anymore (1000m+, He etc, wearable, RIP SBEX03 MM1000). No winner.
Movement/Time keeping accuracy: Modern Rolex are very accurate - all mine recent ones hold to +/-2sec/d. Some of my Seikos are more accurate, some are less. My best is a 8L55 and a 8L35 that keep to 1sec, my worst is a 8L55 that loses 9sec/d. Bottom line, they're just as accurate, but the Rolex are regulated. Seiko movements are now quite old, but tried and true, if thick (clever magic lever). Their amplitude and torque allows massive hands, huge lume. Not sure you need the Hi-beat, but it is cool. Neither are really decorated, Seiko are hand assembled, Rolex were, may still be (a bit). Winner, close: Rolex 3135 for accuracy and easy service.
Lume: Seiko are better, although the new formulation Chromalight on the Explorer 36 is longer lasting than previous formulation and getting close to Seiko (but still not quite as good, if blue). Winner Seiko
Design: Both are pretty conservative, but Seiko does more variety. I'd love to see a genuinely new design from both. GS? The Diver '68 design that forms the bedrock of Seiko divers is much more interesting than Rolex's '50s Sub design, but Rolex have always kept their design fresh and relevant - glacial, but clever. The '68 design lends itself well to dive use, bedding in to a wetsuit, while the Rolex is the better dual-use design - a dress diver that can be worn in almost any situation, not so a Tuna! Bigger iterations of the Rolex are a bit bulky and blunt, but effective. I'd say the Sub is the best daily diver design, the Tuna the best pure diver ever.
Bezel: All my Seikos align, my Deepsea doesn't... Rolex (now) have the better click and more precise: superb, perfection. Seiko are getting better with every high-end watch they make. My SLA043 is very nearly at Rolex levels. Seiko (even older Marinemaster) much better than current Omega (terrible feel). Personally, I prefer the look of aluminium over ceramic. Ceramic doesn't scratch, Aluminium does't crack. Winner, just, Rolex.
Bracelet: Rolex are better, but Seiko (eg MArinmaster) are very practical and designed for proper diving use. They easily adjust on the wrist over a wetsuit. The Rolex are a faff to adjust when working, but much nicer day-to-day. Winner Rolex. A working diver should really be on a strap anyway.
Case: Both well finished. 904L scratches easily, but so what. Seiko more interesting designs and monobloc designs are He proof (genius). New Ever Brilliant steel is off the chart - amazing colour and quality. Seiko (hand) polishing and brushing is better than Rolex, but Seiko are thicker and can't compete with the Sub for wearability. But Sea-Dweller and Deepsea are both as thick as Seikos. Winner: Seiko
Dial/face/hands: Seiko getting better with each new model. Rolex still more precise (even lume fill, marker positioning), Seiko generally less scratches and dust. Hands a tie for me (Seiko getting better, but some odd shapes and lume inconsistency). Rolex have very high quality faces (most people miss this). Rolex do a very good black face, although some Seiko Tunas are almost Vantaback in their bottomless matte blackness! Seiko often ruin their great dials with a hideous Prospex logo! To my eye, Rolex colours don't come close to the sophistication and subtlety of Seiko's. Winner, Rolex for marker precision.
Subjective/X factor: I hate what Rolex has become - a luxury trinket, but they still make a great, reliable watch and each iteration is generally better than the last, if not necessarily prettier. But they are very clinical and machine made. Seiko are reinventing themselves and producing ever better product, that is hand finished. But, perversely the watch we all want from Seiko/GS - a refined and modernised 62MAS on a bracelet, they refuse to make. And while they wear their bigger size well, I think most people would welcome a smaller (39/40mm) dive watch from Seiko. Which is why my favourite all 'round dive watch is Rolex's 116600 Sea-Dweller 4k - best of all worlds. But for serious marine work, I'd take a 8L35 Tuna and for casual use, a 62MAS 8L35 derivative. And the one I'd never sell is the SLA033 Willard. Go figure!

Agree 100%. I have bought and sold 5 Subs and other Rolex watches (Datejust, Explorer, etc). I’m over Rolex and their marketing BS. I don’t like the “look at me, I made it” feel when I wear it. Real watch enthusiasts may fall into the Rolex trap at some point in their watch collection journey but eventually realize that they are paying for 50% marketing and 50% watch. I’d rather wear a Grand Seiko or equivalent and screw what others think. If it brings me joy - that’s what counts. Of course it took me a while to realize that.

Awesome review!! That SLA055 checks almost every single box for me in what I want in a watch. I bought an 114060 Sub in 2014 and it eventually just lost it’s appeal to me. I also had some repeat issues with it and had to send it in twice to get it running right. Last year I got a good deal on a two tone black and rose Seamaster Pro and sold the Sub shortly after. So far I’m much happier with the Omega, but EVERY damn time I see that Seiko I feel like I should have held out to get one of these. The good ol’ skx007 was what got me into mechanical watches to begin with. I swear if they do a black DLC variation of this watch at some point, I will buy it immediately.

    • @EscapementWatch
      @EscapementWatch  Před 2 lety +3

Many agree with you. It is just me, I believe Seiko divers belong on rubber straps as they have in the past since day 1. So I didn't see it as important as most luxury buyers do! Similarly I think all those Subs on rubber look terrible! Crafter blue, everest etc... it looks so silly and gwady to me on a sub. Sub belongs on bracelet in my opinion. But going forward even if they come on different material strap/bracelet I'll find a way to grade them and compare. Do I rank the strap on its own merits? If its a great strap does it full marks? 10/10 or does it lose points because its not metal? Its hard to compare them. But if I were to grade them, the Rolex bracelet 10/10 and as silicone/rubber straps go, the Seiko's is very comfy and nice and thick, a bit long in size for pro divers, and would like ventilation holes so 8/10.

Obviously some people in this comment doesn't have vast knowledge about watches (or only know Rolex). They thinking is a ridiculous to pit Seiko against Rolex. Well it is not. Seiko have vast range of watches. The top end range can compete with the best Swiss or German watchmaker out there. What do you think about the sla043 in terms of value, they have released 3 iterations of the 62mas already, based on this trend will we be seeing more?

    • @EscapementWatch
      @EscapementWatch  Před 2 lety +1

Well they released 4 actually an ultra rare BEAMS JDM version with like 250 units if I remember correctly? I think in 5 years it will be like the sla017, and trade for more then original asking prices as it has less units. If Seiko stops making 62mas re-issues for a couple years the prices will benefit for sure. I have been asking myself this all last year and I really do not know if another 62mas will come in 2022.

I collect solid gold swiss luxury watches, but refuse to buy the subpar quality Rolex hype watches. I don't wear anything as cheap as Seiko watches, but would take a Seiko any day over a Rolex. This video only helps to justify my thinking lol.

The Rolex has one huge problem. That being, it is the most homaged / cloned / faked watch in the world, and to be totally honest, it doesn't do a thing for me. I'd take the Seiko.

Rolex Submariner Stainless Steel Black dial, if you have not never worn one you are missing out big time. Seiko you are backing the underdog.
Even Multi Millionaire Producer Michael who has some of the Rarest most expensive Watches, Richard Mille, diamond encrusted watches was ask if he could only wear one watch his answer without hesitation was Rolex other Watch CZcamsrs have said the same thing.

Great choice, a seiko lx would obviously beat both. I’d rather see a showdown between the Tudor pelagos with its adjustable bracelet and a seiko snr029.

Good video! I concur. Just my opinion but I think that the best watches come from Japanese companies (and I own an Omega which I like very much).

Ho tutti e due e non si possono assolutamente comparare per tanti e troppi motivi, meravigliosi tutti e due ma il Submariner è il Submariner e non ha rivali.

Oh that's a great one. Hard not to like Rolex. My favorite is the basic and most simplest oyster perpetual. Anyways thank you for watching
