  • It's no secret that the Worn & Wound editorial team loves Grand Seiko. They've collected them, admired them, and obsessed over them for years, and in this video Zach Kazan, Kat Shoulders, and Zach Weiss take you inside their own collections to try to identify why this brand means so much them.
This video is not sponsored, we just really love geeking out over Grand Seiko's....

Great stuff all around. I loved hearing your thoughts on collecting the different cases/movements, figuring out what works for you, etc. Memorializing a trip to Japan with a GS is definitely a life goals kind of thing. I seriously considered the SBGE285 GMT before ending up with an Explorer II 226570, but there are almost too many Grand Seikos from which to choose. The Night Birch is a particular favorite that I tried on earlier this year. They're not bad deals pre-owned, so it's definitely one I'm keeping in mind for the future. I do wish there was more micro adjust to be found in some of their bracelets (I'm not even daring to dream of quick adjust yet), as well as more models with lume (even a dot of lume would be nice). I know there's the whole the indices will catch light thing, but more lume is always the answer in my book.

OK, here’s some real inside baseball news (literally) for you GS fans. Shohei Ohtani is a Grand Seiko ambassador and fan. At his signing with the Dodgers, he was wearing a GS, maybe an SBGR261. Recently, he gave the Cardinals’ Lars Nootbaar his white birch for a promise that he would return to the Japanese National Team. Ohtani is from Iwate Prefecture. Mean anything to you Seiko fans?

Absolutely love my SBGW287 Boshū. Having a no date manual wind is really nice with GS when the popular route is to go hibeat and spring drive. And that slightly textured burgundy dial really pops in the light too. And that red strap is awesome. I love seeing GS on leather straps a lot more than on the bracelets since most are dressy, even in the heritage line too.

Nice video! It's cool to see true lived in enthousiasm in what can be a cynical industry.
Regarding the shots of the green SBGW that is shown on the BoR bracelet.... Is that a Grand Seiko model number (the bracelet) and if yes, can you share that partnumber? I've got a SBGW231 that I'd like to get a bracelet for.
Regarding the ownership experience.... It heavily depends on the model. The SBGV239 was my first, and I still miss it, I sold it after five years of ownership to sponsor an SBGP011 that's still with me. I might buy one back one day. The SBGV245 wasn't my thing. Difficult to combine. The SBGA465 left the collection because it was chunky, in spite of the lovely kirazuri dial. So now I have the much lighter Shunbun alongside the SBGP011 and SBGW231. One pattern, one sunburst, and finally one eggshell watch that is simplcity itself.
If now I get an omiwatari-case and a 44GS case, I'd be done. :) Once you find the ones you truly love, they're very sticky.

SBGP007 and SBGP015, both 9F85 watches, with the midnight blue sunray and red seconds hands. One is the tuned quartz gold star in the elegance line, while the other is more sports-like in its style, having a matching blue ceramic bezel. As far as I'm concerned the quartz line is the sweet spot of performance, elegance, and Japanese engineering. I tracked the SBGP007 over a full year and it was accurate to +3 seconds in that year. I know the SBGP015 isn't far off either.

I have the black dial variant of Kat’s watch and I love it. I agree with her about wanting the simplicity of a non-textured dial in order to further appreciate the craftsmanship of the indices and handset. I appreciate the hybrid sporty and dressy nature of my sbga467. An absolute datejust killer IMO especially for the fraction of cost of the DJ.

I just picked up the SBGA241 (Christmas gift from the wife). I love it so far. To me having the lumed indices set it off. Makes it more of a sports watch that otherwise the 203 would be. Hasn’t left my wrist since and still so accurate.

I really like Grand Seiko but always felt like some details put me off. For example, dimensions, bracelets, lack of quick micro-adjustments. SBGM221 is awesome but too thick for a dress watch in my opinion 🙈.

Question to the Worn and Wound Panel, I own a GS and love wearing it. But why can't GS compete with the Swiss and Germans by improving its steel bracelets?

I was looking for an all purpose watch that leaned slightly more towards dressy than sport. I didn’t know enough about GS at the time and bought a blue dial Omega Aqua Terra 38mm. I love that watch so much and it ticks so many of the GS boxes that I can’t justify having most of the GS offerings. The exception is the automatic GMT you mentioned but I can’t afford it just now.

    Zach Weiss, here's a little tip;
Please refrain from using the word " like" so often.
"This is LIKE, my favorite watch, and, LIKE, it is special, you know, and LIKE,.....
Speaking in this fashion is quite annoying, similar to having a limited vocabulary.
"And, I LIKE, this,......you don't get caught up, in LIKE,."......

Recently I wanted to show a friend the nice finishing of my GS so I got a loupe out and was horrified to see massive deep scratches on the hands. It reset me to see the marketing BS going on in this brand of unimaginative resurrections on traditional designs. Amusingly Citizen ha just brought out a limited edition of this style of watch for 5K+.

  • @tibhen8473

Nice brand but it is still to similar to Seiko for me, and they lack of innovation, for example their bracelets look all the same, they dont even have easy link to adjust their sizes when even the latest tudor black bay offers it. Also they are quite thick watches, so if GS really wants to compete with the Swiss brands they will have to up their games a little. When it comes to dials beauty they are number one, no argument there.
