The Best Megalodon Tooth Hunting Site I Ever Found

  • I don't throw around the word "best" especially when it comes to hunting megalodon teeth because there have been so many good spots during my 30+ years of collecting, but I feel confident in using it here. I can't believe how lucky I got finding this spot. It was completely untouched and the bottom of the dig was just at the top of the fossil bearing formation. That meant all I had to do was look down in some spots to find teeth, and in the rest, I only had to dig off a foot or two of overburden. There were bones everywhere which is the tell-tale indicator of megalodon and other fossil shark teeth. It didn't take long to dig one out, then another, and another. Then when I walked on the piles after heavy rain there were more big teeth. All together I was able to collect this site for about a week and I found 17 complete megalodon teeth in that short amount of time. I'm not planning on retiring anytime soon, but it is going to be very difficult to top this spot. Summerville, I love you!

    soooo is the meg tooth not rare or what?

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  Před 5 lety +473

      great question! it depends on your definition of rare I suppose. on one hand, meg teeth are not rare. consider that megalodon as a species lived at least 10 million years and they existed globally. one individual would lose hundreds, if not thousands in a lifetime. imagine how many teeth every shark lost cumulatively during that time! on the other hand, nice megalodon teeth are rare. of all the teeth i mentioned before, many did not fossilize at all or were completely annihilated by natural erosion at some point since they were lost. Only a scarce few of all megalodon teeth ever shed survived to be recognizable as shark teeth today. these sharks ate whales and had tremendous bite force so many of the teeth broke during feeding. lots of incomplete teeth fossilized. fewer teeth were complete when they fell from the sharks' mouths. Some of those broke over time due to natural processes like drying out and becoming wet again. the salt in the water is the worst because when a tooth dries, salt crystals form and bust the tooth apart from the inside. so basically everything is against a tooth surviving tens of millions of years in complete condition. those are the ones people want and they ARE rare.

    WOW So thats a construction site? They have just dug deep enough to hit the fossil layer? So very cool! We use to dig in the spoil dried out pools from the Savannah river dredging. I have heard you cant do that any more. Sad if true. You had to dig deep to get the big ones but most of the time they would be chipped from the pipes. I want to go on one of these trips inland either by river or a dig site some day! Thanks for sharing!

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  Před 3 lety

      rivers are the best place to find them in SC and you do need a permit to do so. They can also be found in Florida (Venice Beach especially) and you do not need a permit there to collect shark teeth, but you do if you want to pick up vertebrate fossils.

    Hey..i live in St Augustine Fl..is it possible to dig anywhere in the state and reveal the era in which these sharks lived,?I guess what im asking was the entire state once covered with a prehistoric ocean to where these teeth can be found everywhere if you happen to dig deep enough..or are certain areas more likely due to geologic processes?is there a way to look at an area and determine the likelihood of it..i see that south Carolina seems to have an abundance of them.im sure they just didn't live there so whats making that unique and what caused these teeth to be more accessible in that area?

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  Před 3 lety

      Florida is loaded with fossils too. The shark teeth are more on the west side, but I have found isolated teeth on the atlantic side too. when you consider actual area, Florida has more than SC because everything here is generally east of 95 whereas florida is nearly the entire state. But where we hunt in SC is special because prehistoric river systems concentrated the fossils in massive piles during the last ice age. today, new rivers and creeks erode those ancient deposits, sometimes excavations expose them too.

    K, Dino dental, was wondering: did the originals drop these all over then grow replacements, or just spat them out in last days so to speak ?
    Are they teeth or fossilised replicants and if the latter how come they're all in one as if just pulled ¿?

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  Před 3 lety

      All sharks have rows of teeth that move forward as if on a conveyor belt when they grow. once they reach the front of the jaw they eventually just fall out and the ones behind replace them. it happens more often during feeding, but sometimes they just fall out, and this occurs the whole lifetime of sharks. it is estimated that tiger sharks can lose as many as 30 thousand teeth during their lives. add up all the sharks alive for hundreds of millions of years and you can easily see why sharks teeth are the most commonly collected fossil. all the teeth in this video originally fell to the bottom of the ocean millions of years ago and are now fossils, which are formed over millions of years as the organics are replaced by minerals.

    Used to live in Summerville, SC and had a lot of fun with the kids digging for shark teeth in little streams. Super easy to find. Used to have a jar of them. Neighbors dug up large shark teeth from the soil under there garage when they replaced the cement pad. Even watched a crew dig out an ancient Leatherback Turtle from a small stream 30 miles from the ocean. Super cool.

  • @theintimidatingjourney9361

    That’s pretty cool dude, I assume the black river you named your channel after is based on the edisto river, which I believe is the largest undammed black river in the northern hemisphere (I’ve spent a lot of time floating kayaking and paddle boarding that river) I grew up in archdale and still live in the area- North Charleston. So when my parents had their pool dug when I was a young teenager I found a bunch of shark teeth and a megalodon tooth but not whole but still cool to find . You really have a good eye for it!
