A Handful of 30 Million Year Old Fossil Whale Teeth

  • We found a pond with really good Chandler Bridge formation exposed. We found the usual assortment of nice shark teeth but this spot had quite a few fossil whale teeth, too. Always fun to find find those - it was a period of time where whales were evolving rapidly so there is a lot to be learned from intact skulls. Unfortunately I didn't find a skull this time around, but there were enough teeth to make me think there was one somewhere!

      Brittany Robertson I live 15 minutes from the beach in SC. I find all kinds of shark teeth. There's 1 thing i use to find a lot of as a kid, I don't see anymore ; we called them "angel wings". They had a rainbow shimmer, kinda fragile & they would be open kinda like an oblong clam shell, yet very thin. They was beautiful. I don't find many sand dollars or starfish anymore. 8/

    Nice, nice, nice, and after all these years I thought my Fla. Gulf Coast beach finds were a prize. Well you sure pulled me down off of my pedestal. But at least the one thing nobody can take away from the find, is the satisfying thrill of it at the time. Now every time my great grandchildren, just as my grandchildren ask to see my 40 yr. collection I get the same thrill educating them on the fossils and telling them about how much fun I had in the finds. If I show them your videos they're going to say, "Where's the beach Grandpa!".

    Hey, I have a few questions.
    How long did you look for all this at that location?
    How are you able to identify lots of shark teeth and other fossils as soon as you see them?
    A few of the fossils looked like they were just on the surface. How often does this happen, and why?
    I've never dug for fossils, but I want to sometime.

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  Před 2 lety

      we dug a few hours a time over a few days. i can id my finds quickly because I've been hunting for a while and I have seen most of it before. The fossils on the surface were put there by machines to be used as building pads. That said, there are places around where the fossil layer is close to the surface so you can find fossils exposed like this naturally. See my creek hunting videos for examples of that.
