Here is a video of the prep of the 50lbs crab: • MONSTER fossil crab pr...
I struck it really lucky, low tide and low sand levels which exposed so many new concretions containing all kinds of fossils. Fossil crabs, whale bones, fossilised shells and some fossils I couldn't identify.
Looked for some fossil shark teeth but haven't found any yet!

It's beautiful how this is literally everywhere but most of us don't see this.
Glad CZcams took me to this part of the internet
Guaranteed we have all walked past a fossil at some point. Maybe a few meters beneath us 😁
Mamlambo
Not on the coast of the Netherlands, because it's a delta.
That crystallised rock is beautiful.
Oh my godfather, I cannot believe you found that huge crab fossil on the beach! Geez, I don't think we have those in Australia but I'm going to find out. I went fossil hunting in Lyme Regis, Dorset in 2019 and found a few great fossils. One crystallised amonite and a trilobite! I took my fossils to the Lyme Regis Museum, which is in Mary Anning's house, and they said both fossils are real and not just the shadow of the creatures. The best part is I was able to bring them home to Sydney!
If you got a hammer the first week and a crowbar the next if my calculations are correct you should get a jackhammer next
Oooh I hope so! I also found an upside down truck in the one video 😁 I'm holding out for some ambergris 🤑
And a 30 ton excavator the week after
Hoping for something different than a jackhammer for you. Perhaps that elusive penguin! 🐧. That one crab must be monstrous in size!
I think I’ll start looking for crab fossils too over here in newzealand, I love geology and I love scavenging so this is the perfect hobby for me
Its an awesome hobby!
What part of nz you in man? I'm thinking of looking for some fossils too, I just can't figure out what to look for when looking for fossils
I could spend hours hunting for these 🙋🏻♀️ !
Me too 😁 thanks for watching Tracy!
It was very fun Mamlambo .
I can't wait to see this! Used to find trilobite fossils on our farm.
That's so awesome! I would love to find trilobites, they are found in New Zealand but a few hours drive from me 😄 Thanks for watching!
Great video bud!! So fun to watch, love seeing what you find on your adventures!
Thanks mate! Always good to get out and about - especially finding massive fossil crabs!
@@MamlamboFossils absolutely! I just found a coral fossilin my last video (thought it was something else) and it was the size of my thumb - I was pumped haha so yeah a 50lb one would be amazing!!
i don't mean to pry but what did you do with that crowbar?
😂😂😂 I still use it, comes in handy for prying open bigger concretions 😂
Pun intended?
Aahhhhh. I see what you did there.
Ba-dum-tssss
4:33 you keep finding murder weapons
Hahaha! It's like a giant game of Cluedo 😄
Did you know before crowbars were invented 99% of crows set at home and drink alone 🤣
I love this so much 😂😂😂
Haha
Did you know French fries were not made.in France but actually in Greece? Haha enjoy the dad joke
That's horrible and I love it so much 🤣🤣🤣
I'ld like to see a video of how you expose those crabs
Here is a time-lapse I made recently: czcams.com/video/STw905QB570/video.html

Any word on when this video will be? Id love to see the size and shape of that crab
You can dissolve the rock in acid. Most fossil shells were composed originally of calcium carbonate, and many are preserved in limestone, which is the same chemical make-up. In some circumstances, however, the calcium carbonate of the shells dissolves away and is replaced by silica, but the enclosing limestone remains unchanged. Because limestone dissolves readily in acid, but silica doesn't, you can extract these specimens with acetic acid (vinegar).
Museums use highly concentrated acetic acid (80%) but dilute it with water to about 5%.
Limestone can take anything from a few days to many months to dissolve completely. The reaction with the rock gradually neutralises the acid, which needs to be refreshed from time to time. At the end of the process all that remains is some slushy rock residue, and the silicified fossils.
Many silicified fossils are very delicate; they have to be handled with extreme care, and you often need to strengthen them with adhesives.
Thanks for all the info Hob! I'm going to try this approach with a smaller concretion. I'll give it a go with some vinegar and see how it goes. Thanks for watching!
Mamlambo Regular store bought vinegar is usually between 2.5 and 5%. The 5% is occasionally sold as “ cleaning vinegar”
Thank you for letting us know about the tools you are finding!
My pleasure Gail, I also find a bit of commercial shipping equipment (buoys, rope and so on) that I take home and recycle or re-use 😄
To check if it’s calcite easiest thing would probably be to apply a drop of low concentration HCl (Hydrochloric acid, usually sold as muriatic acid) and see if it fizzes! Might discolour a little bit where you apply the acid though! Cheers!
Thanks John! I'll try that 😁
Wow so glad I came across your videos , the are awesome 👌
Thanks Ragnar! Glad you like them :)
That's _so_ cool that you could return that hammer to its original owner! I just hope all the tools I've lost over the years are being used by _someone._ It brings a tear to my eye thinking about tools sitting on beaches and in ceiling tiles and crawl spaces being unused! I've put every tool I've ever found to good use ...especially the _brand new_ (but 1980's vintage) Klein wire strippers I found in a drop ceiling 2 years ago. Thank you to the errant electrician lost those ...they're being put to good use! 😁
Hahahah, yeah it was amazing that the owner contacted me. Even better that it had sentimental value and I could give it back! About a month ago I went down with Thiago and he mentioned his kid had lost his hammer a while back and was quite upset about it, and we found it! A bit rusted but nothing that can't be fixed 😁 Thanks for the great comments! Hope you enjoy the videos!
Wow man. Fossils are everywhere.
That was on a good day! Mostly they are covered in 5m of sand 😁
I wish I could have one of your crab fossiels in my rock and fossils Collections. They are so cool I love how you only carve part of the way to show the prettiness of the stone itself. 😁
Glad you like them!
My father and I found a huge part of an ammonite once. Not all of it, but a massive part of the shell.
I also found a huge rock with crystals
I still haven't found an ammonite :D Maybe this will be the year!
@@MamlamboFossils good luck! It was definatly a lucky find. It was in some sort of soft rock where my dad found the first piece. Than we started breaking a few of the bigger parts and found more and more parts of the ammonite. If it was full sized, it would probably be like 60-70cm in diameter :D
This is so cool!!! I could only imagine how crazy these crabs looked alive
They sure were big!
Amazing! Finds!!! I rockhound In Canada. Every place is so vastly versatile!!!
Thanks so much! I've heard good things about the dino fossils in Canada 😀
Good to find you back at it. Winter is just socked in here feels like no end in sight. God we can’t wait to head out again.

Some Scientists just found a teilobite fossil with some guts preserved !!!!
That is insane!! You wouldn't think that was possible. Thanks for watching 😃
King Boris 111 a trilobite? Really? With guys preserved. This is cool
They also found blood cells in fossil, they didn't expect.
Cool maybe when cloning exists they can make a horseshoe crab have them as kids or something
Found this video on facebook. Makes me want to check out the beaches in Maine. They have huge rocks very similar to the ones in your videos.
Was going to say I want to see updates on the prep-ed fossils but then I saw your description. lol
Very interesting & thank you for sharing. 👍
Awesome finds my man, I hope one day I will find some big keepers to add to my collection.

Glad you enjoy it! 😊 I had a shock when I counted the videos the other day, more than 50 now!
I’ve enjoyed finding fossils since I was a kid I never knew there was a channel like this . What’s great is you try to recover the fossil by carefully breaking down the stone. Very enjoyable.

In August 2020 I found what appears to be a crab claw about 30 miles west of Cincinnati, Ohio USA near the town of Osgood, Indiana....found among coral, brachiopods, nautiloids and crinoids in the "Cincinnati Arc" which stretches through the Ohio River valley from east of Cincinnati to west of Louisville, Kentucky.
Hi Mike! That sounds like a great spot, I'm sure you could find some cool shark teeth there as well 😀
i love this channel-thanks for sharing . .
And thanks for watching! I'm glad you're enjoying it. I'm off to another fossil hunt tomorrow so more videos are coming soon 😁
23kg is huge!
I imagine that would have been quite heavy to cart back to your car...
The second rock that you picked up, I believe I have two rocks the same shape. Exactly the same shape. The first one I found has fingerprints in it and is indigenous axe..
You can imagine my surprise when many years later I found it's twin on a completely different Beach. Looks like you found the triplet.
It was quite a workout to get it back to the car! 😄 Which country did you find the other two rocks in? Maybe they are related!
So many ppl walk over these stones and are completely oblivious to what treasures lie right under their feet.......
I know! Most people are amazed when I show them what I found, even locals. It also takes a while to train your eyes I think.
Thanks for the video.
My pleasure Steven! 😄
Been subscribed for a little while now. Just catching up on some of your past videos still. Did you ever process that huge crab?😳😲 Just curious if you put it in a video, would love to see it! Thanks for sharing Mamlambo!✌🤠
this is amazing!
Thanks Vincent!
A good way to tell if something is calcite is to rub a little bit off in a powder and pour a bit of a weak acid like vinegar on it. Or diluted strong acid but I don't know if you guys have ready access to sulphuric or hydrochloric outside of a lab, it doesn't have to be that strong though. It should fizzle and make CO2 bubbles.
Gonna go try that right now! Thanks for that @knate44
@@MamlamboFossils glad I could help! It seems 1st year geology was a good choice :P.
Muriatic Acid is used for cleaning up concrete and brick work, that is dilute hydrochloric acid. It is widely available at hardware stores. Be careful with it.
Was waiting to see you open that
Mamlambo When your working on these fossils you find , besides using picks , and other power tools to help free them from the rocks or matrix in which they are found , do you ever use " acids " like white vinegar to help free the fossils ? There's a mineral that looks very much like " White Quarts " but I can't recall what name it goes by . One time I found a man on line , { You [ tube] } that came across a rock made of this mineral , he placed it on a bucket filled with plain white vinegar , and every so often he'd check up on it to see what if anything had been reviled . This time he just happened to find a fairly large gold nugget . Jack
Hi John, I haven't tried any acids yet but you are the second person this week to mention it. I think I will give it a go with one of my more damaged concretions. I will include it in a video if I do try it. Thanks for the suggestion! I will research the "White Quarts" you mentioned and see if I can find that CZcams video - sounds fascinating! Thanks for taking the time to comment and watch.
@@MamlamboFossils Thank you for your reply . I don't know about this , my memory might be faulty , but that mineral I said looks like { White , or Milk Quarts } , is called " Dolomite " , and again I'm not sure of the spelling either . Jack

Just a quick question when u find a crab in a rock how do u know which side to prep on .ie how do u know which is top 🤔

Ill you ever clean up the big crab 🦀? I never knew crabs where so great at being preserved as fossils i think there now my favorite fossil of all time they look amazing.

What type of tool do you use to chip away unwanted material. Is that a uv type of sealer?
Its B72 consolidant. I use an CP9361 air scribe to remove the rock
The tools make me think they found something worth leaving the took behind to try and retrieve later. Or just plain lost in the rocks haha

are there ppl actually buying these type of piece? and how much can it go for?
I feel i would try to find a way to those boulders that have bones in them. But those are probably really heavy.
Yeah some of them weigh hundreds of pounds!
Polish calcite with acid works great and only takes seconds.
Thanks Alec! I will give it a go!
are there any tips you can give me to looking for a fossils?
Fossils are quite common in sedimentary rocks, especially if its was ocean floor or a lakebed at some point. Check if there is a local rock club you can join, they will definitely know of any fossils nearby and will love sharing the knowledge.
Do you keep any of the bones you find?
I do keep some of the more identifiable bone. Especially if it is still in the concretion. You never know what is hiding behind it!
@@MamlamboFossils where is this place at??
Are fossils only found in concretions? Is that what gives them away when you hunt for fossils? Also, are there specific types of locations you look for in terms of fossil hunting sites? Or can you find these sorts of things anywhere?
At this site they are mainly found in concretions, but you do find them in the cliff and mud. Location: I look for sedimentary deposits especially limestone areas. You won't find much in the volcanic areas.
@@MamlamboFossils that makes sense, the mud got me though. Is it sorta like hardened mud stuff or still liquidy? I'll have to look around Melbourne once I can!
Do you sale them after you find them?
I dont but I will be selling copies!
Where is Washington state is that crab from?
I bet some pirate was using that pry bar to open up concretions. Lol I hate to admit it but, I've been that "pirate" ...before I learned proper hounding etiquette. I was a smash and grab collector, with no respect to property rights, or public parks.
Fortunately, I found the right mentors to teach me the ways of preservation of historical data, delicate specimen handling and property rights! I still use a crowbar sometimes though 😉
Yeah, I think a crowbar has it's place in my toolkit - mainly for flipping over large rocks or getting them out of big spaces. I prefer looking at the concretions and looking for clues 😁 Thanks for watching Walt!
Have you opened up the big one yet?
I'm busy working on it. It's such a big project that I do a bit and then work on some other fossils and then go back to it. 😁
Maybe not a crab in there. Always a surprise in concreations. Shine a black light on your finds. Shortwave blacklight brings quite a glow to some. Especially Calcite.
Awesome finds your getting!!!!!
Thanks Dave! You never know until it's fully prepped! I do love finding big concretions. Uploading a new video now which talks about a surprising concretion I found at the end. Let's just say it's currently at the Canterbury museum 😉 Should be up in the next 4 hours or so.
Oh, I do have a UV torch and I should take it down to the beach at night. I'll have a look at the current concretions I have tonight. Some of them have calcite so should glow. Not sure if they are short wave, is that 365nm?
@@MamlamboFossils Yss I believe that is considered a short wavelength. But I maybe wrong. That is the same as the ones I use.
