      3/25/18, Ahhhhh, big deal. All that trouble just to change a perfectly good steering wheel. 1 other question besides the cost: why wouldn't the middle of the new wheel have worked being the old center fit the new wheel? now for the front valance & rear gate actuator, just some useless junk to sell you.To each his own.

    • @aaronjones3982
      @aaronjones3982 Před 5 lety +6

      Here's an idea Preston. The reason you change out a perfectly good steering wheel is because Ford won't option a leather steering wheel in a XL, STX, or XLT truck. I personally love the look of a XL or XLT with black door handles and black running boards over the overly chromed Lariat, King Ranch (Yuck), Platinum, and Limited models. See, IMO, the XL with the STX package is the perfect mix of black and chrome although you can not order them with leather steering wheels or leather seats. I will be buying a 2019 F350 XLT crew cab long bed 4x4 6.7 powerstroke (so I get the bumper with fog lights and a center console) and installing a leather steering wheel and Katzkin leather seats so I have exactly what I want at 10-15K less than the chrome models.
      I realize you think that people have the time to put out videos to be Mr Helper, but in reality some people want to make money. I have no problem buying a part through a link that someone has below their video. If you are going to buy a part, use the link, It costs you no more money to do so and the guy who made the video makes a little money for producing a good video as this was.
      I realize that sometimes a person gets tired of the constant bombardment of advertisements always in your face at every turn these days, but that is the world we live in. So the next time ABC, NBC, CBS or whatever channel you watch on tv airs a commercial, please call them and complain.
      Oh, as far as the center of the wheel (the airbag I'm assuming you mean) being used from the old truck. Airbags are kind of expensive so it's good to use your old one. The steering wheel is only $175 -200 brand new.

      @@aaronjones3982 I think maybe he's talking about the buttons/controls that he changed over from his old steering wheel. It was more about personal preference and color as they are the same part just one is silver on the exterior trim and the other was black.

    For anyone who is considering doing this (or has attempted it and struggled - like I did), try using a 3mm allen key/hex wrench. I tried for over an hr with the 4mm and various screw drivers to no avail on my 2017 F250 Lariat. It turns out there is a cone shaped guide to direct your tool onto the the tab (one on each side) which narrows at the deepest point, right before you make contact with the release mechanism. For me, 4mm was too broad and the allen key was hung-up prior to making contact. 3mm slid right through and I popped this sucker off in 30 seconds.
    Thanks for the original post, another CZcams gem!

    I did the same swap on a '22 F-250 XL RCLB, as my oily hands seem to destroy these urethane steering wheels that come with base model Fords.
    Here's some extra tidbits I feel are worth mentioning :
    - When you're popping the Airbag off, definitely use an 3mm allen wrench or something of the equivalent width. While a flat head or phillips head screwdriver will fit into the holes on the outside of the steering wheel, they will *NOT* fit into the tapered holes that guide you into the space where the spring-loaded retaining rods on the airbag itself are holding it to the steering wheel. I messed around for *way* too long trying to make a screwdriver work before finding a good stiff piece of electrical grounding wire (10 gauge) out of a 4-conductor piece of MC cable I had laying around (all the allen wrenches I had were too short). Only after getting the airbag out did I discover the gouged up tapered holes from said screwdriver. Fortunately, this didn't damage the actual airbag itself.
    While this seems like something that should be easy enough to do by yourself, *trust me you want a second person unless you're some kind of weight lifter as a hobby or have bionic arms* . Here's why :
    -Per the Ford service manual, the torque spec for the bolt holding the steering wheel on is *52 Foot Pounds* . Let me tell you how fun that was doing that by myself on something that very much wants to move when you're putting that kind of force on it... both while taking the bolt out and putting it back on.
    -While a 15/16" socket did work, I found that a *24mm* socket had a little better fit. The service manual (annoyingly) doesn't spec the size of this bolt head, so I had to try a few before I found one that was pretty snug (again, you're going to want a tight fit on that bolt when you've got a 10" extension on a 1/2" ratchet and you've got your legs pressed into the steering wheel to keep it still while cranking that bolt back down to the correct torque (again, if you're doing this yourself)
    All that said : Thank you very to moostang09 for posting this video, as it gave me a great idea of what I was getting myself into beforehand.

    I have adaptive steering on my 2019 F250 and it is intermittently going into alarm status. When it does that, the wheel will cock to one side or the other 30* to 90* out of alignment with front wheels. This sucks. I will be changing out the steering wheel using this procedure to eliminate the adaptive steering. I do not know if I can disable the interface electronically with forscan though. At least the crappy adaptive steering will go away permanently.

      That is the steering wheel with all the bells and whistles. Heated, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, etc etc. The one from the Lariat doesn’t have any of that, and should run you around $350 or so. The link he posted takes you to the one you want.

      From what I read in some vehicles if you turn it too much it will loose its ability to find the correct spots to turn off the blinkers like it should. However, in my mustang and my f250 I didn’t have any troubles with it. Not a big concern to be honest. This install is very straight forward and super easy.
