  • 3/19/2021 UPDATE: This scooter has been parted out to convert a motorcycle to electric. Check it out here: • Electric Motorcycle Pr...
    5/30/15 UPDATE #1: I seem to be getting a lot of questions about how I modified the scooter to go "faster" but that is not the case. . . yet. *(See Below) It was designed to go 45MPH but sadly the analog speedometer has an error that shows 50MPH+ when only going 40MPH which I have confirmed with GPS. All I did to this scooter was replace the controller and batteries so it would run as designed.
    *5/30/15 UPDATE #2: I have plans to add another battery in series to increase the voltage from 60VDC to 72VDC as long as the controller and motor can handle it but I am still doing the calculations to see if this will work. Stay tuned . . . :-)
    Original Text: I bought two broken electric scooters from Craigslist and by swapping parts and replacing the batteries I was able to rebuild a good one. This was my first long range trip. 11 miles may not seem like much but at almost wide open throttle most of the way, I stressed the batteries pretty well running them almost out and ran most of the way at 35 MPH with a top speed of 42 MPH confirmed with GPS so I think I got my money's worth. :-)

    MSRP in 2007 was $1999 plus shipping but I found both scooters on Craigslist in Austin in October 2012. The Z20A cost $350 but had dead batteries and the brakes were locked up but the controller was almost new and the Z20B that I am riding in this video was only $100 but it also had dead batteries and a fried controller but it was barely used and only had 12km on the odometer. I used the Z20A for parts and still have a good 2500 watt hub motor I plan to build another project with.

  • @HappySillyFace
    @HappySillyFace  Před 11 lety

    It's a 60 volt system that takes five 12 volt batteries and they cost around $60 each so I have over $300 in new batteries. Both scooters had very few kilometers on them and both sat around unused since 2008. I still have a spare 2500 watt hub motor from one I plan to build an electric trike out of. The other almost new part is the speed controller which costs $200 new. The original ones were known to fail and I got lucky that one of the sellers got EVT America to replace it under warranty.

    Hey, I have a gio italia scooter and it tends to go like 20km/h on flat land, and 10km/h up a steep hill, so I was wondering if you knew any way I could make it go faster? It's awfully embarrassing when it's super slow on flat land and uphill, but downhill its 50km/h. I wish it was as fast as yours.
    Thanks. xx

    Hi,
    What would you suggest to make an existing 48V - 600W Brushless Electric Scooter which has (4) 12V - 22Ah Lead Acid Batteries, which top speed is only about 22-24 mph and upgrade it to make it go 40mph?
    Let me know where to get parts and so forth, would appreciate it. Thanks :)

    • @HappySillyFace
      @HappySillyFace  Před 9 lety

      Tony Escobar I think your scooter is already at it's maximum ratings. You would need to upgrade your motor and controller to handle the higher voltage and current. My scooter has a 2500W motor and runs on 60V and can barely go 40MPH. I suggest you look on Craigslist like I did and see if you can find a cheap scooter like mine that needs repair.

      Most mobility scooters are without suspension and dual back tires set no wider than a standard entrance door so it can go in/out of homes. Setup like that it's inviting death to go faster than designed by manufacturer! If you can find one (highly doubtful) that has full suspension and the dual tires are designed to lean then it should handle pretty good at 40mph.

      I am using a Kelly controller model KEB72600AJ with five UB12350 12 volt SLA batteries for a 60-volt system. As of 12/7/19, the scooter still works but the batteries are getting weak. I have tried two different lithium packs from Amazon but the seller keeps sending the wrong pack. The first one was over 84 volts so the controller refused to use it and the second pack was broken right out of the box and they forgot to send the charger. Both packs were around $1000 each but Amazon worked with me to get a refund. I am still searching for a better battery and will probably just build my own pack once I learn more about how to do that and working with the BMS and a charger that I will be able to use with the standard SAE J1772 240 volt L2 charging standard that my 2014 Chevy Volt uses. From what I have learned with this scooter I am ready to convert a dual-sport motorcycle to electric and just need to find a donor bike, battery pack, motor, and controller. I test rode a couple of Zero motorcycles which ran great but cost way too much and require a special 120 volt charger that takes 9 hours to go 50 miles or so and for more money you can add more chargers to charge in less time but for the over $10K price for just the bike, that should be included and/or it should come with the SAE J1772 standard.

    My brother has what looks like uncannily like the bike tested out here, and I have ridden and it's speed it limited to 50kph (30mph) for UK laws, however it will of course go faster than that downhill. Range the always asked 'problem' is dependent on weight of rider, terrain, and mode of use, but realistically 25-30 miles, So Perfect for someone commuting less than that each day and re-charge overnight on a normal electric socket. My brother weighs in at 18 stone (252 lbs) and managed easily a round trip of 20.6 miles.
    Looked like you picked around 3pm local time (School Run) not a good idea ! and rather strange how you rode in the middle of road, not even the middle but near the centre (yes that's how we spell it in the UK)
    The main thing you should be aware of is like riding a bike, is that there is NO engine braking, and when coming up to a STOP you have to use all brakes.
    Good video, well done.

      The best top speed I was able to do was only 42MPH confirmed with GPS and it can only do that speed for maybe 10 miles with new batteries that are fully charged. The only way to get a higher top speed and better range would be to add more batteries which would increase the voltage but this would require a new controller and probably a new motor. :-)

      Happy SillyFace Thanks for the reply. Zero Motorcycles and ZEV Scooters are designed for high speed and longer range. Costly, true. Well, at least the tech is constantly evolving. Now, if we could have a Tesla car version of a motorcycle or scooter that could go over 300 miles and average over 70mph.

      Charles Jones My next project is to convert a 1997 Saturn SW2 station wagon into an electric car. I needed a replacement gas engine for my 2000 SL2 and was left with a rolling chassis that is perfect for the conversion since it has plenty of room for batteries. I still need to swap out the bad automatic transmission for a standard one and buy an electric motor, controller, and a dozen 12 volt batteries but someday I hope to have it running. It won't compare to a Tesla or even a Leaf but it will be my creation and my plan is to have it capable of 75MPH with a range of 50 miles or more at slower speeds. I will post some videos of it eventually so stay tuned . . . :-)

    • @HappySillyFace
      @HappySillyFace  Před 10 lety

      I think it's made by Kelly but I'm not sure but I do know it's NOT the original one. The first scooter I bought had this new replacement controller that worked great but the batteries were worn out and the front and rear disc brakes were locked up from lack of use. It also had a bent frame. The scooter in the video is the better one of the two and only needed a controller and new batteries because they were melted together from probably overcharging and only had 7.5 miles on the odometer so I swapped the new controller from the first scooter to build what you see in the video. The seller of the good one said the controller died pretty quick and he gave up trying to repair it. I only paid $100 for the whole scooter which retailed for over $2000 in 2007 so I practically stole it. :-)

      Please give me details for the speed increase !

    • @HappySillyFace
      @HappySillyFace  Před 9 lety

      EastendBillythekid I didn't change anything. I repaired the scooter using parts from another one. The factory controllers on this model were known to fail and I was lucky to find a new one already installed in the parts scooter I bought to repair this one. The scooter was designed to go 45MPH but like most analog cable driven motorcycle speedometers, it has an error that shows faster than actual speed which I confirmed with a GPS to be only 42MPH. The hub motor is rated at 2500 watts and the scooter uses five 12 volt batteries which equals 60 volts so using ohms law we can calculate the current to be around 42 amps which would be just over 3HP. I am no expert but this sounds about right to me but if anyone reading this knows for sure, feel free to correct me.

This scooter is not practical for long distance but is perfect for slow short trips less than 10 miles round trip. As soon as battery technology gets cheaper with more range I will swap out the old SLA types that are in there now for the new ones. :-)
