    I thought this was the greatest luxury sedan in the world when it came out, this design really has a place in my heart. The total aluminum spaceframe body construction made the A8 1,000 lbs lighter than the Phaeton and the Bentleys. I've driven W12 Phaetons and the power pushes you back in the seat, but in a 1,000 lbs-lighter car, I'll bet it is deceptively fast. But still designed to do it without drama, as you said.

No nightmare stories to report, and I'm still just as happy with it every time I see it, and every time I have a reason to drive it somewhere. And, for me, that's especially nice. I had a B6 VR6 Passat wagon with the 3.6 VR6 (half of this engine) and it was pretty reliable. Loved the engine note as it’s considered by many as the best sounding 6 cylinder. Even tho it says V6 on the engine itself, the car got a single head…it’s basically an inline 6 with weird angled cylinders using one head. The engine itself is very very reliable, the issue is the plastic chain guides that get brittle and break away taking the whole engine with it. It should be changed at 150k miles. Other than that its very reliable and i wouldn’t mind driving two of those engines mated together. There is no room to work on but as i said the only issue seems like chain guides. That passat was one of the best cars i ever had and will definitely get another VR6 car whenever i see one.

Easy to work on, cause its a timing belt engine, air suspension struts not much different to change if it was a normal coil car, electronics last, as long as you clear the sunroof drains. 6hp26fla transmission is also good, if you don't constantly beat on the car. Steal for mint condition at $2200 at 125k miles.

    I owned that car - especially after the Transporter movie came out and he was driving an A8 in it, a lot of us were obsessed with it. It was an amazing car but the reliability was so terrible, I can’t even begin to tell you. It was in the shop once a month - at least. Quarter of the year I was driving a rental because it was in the shop. And with deductibles on insurance, it was extremely expensive to maintain. It had so many features and an equal amount of things to break. It had auto leveling air suspension which broke all the time. The motors on the infotainment screen broke a few times. Auto trunk motor broke. CD changer got stuck. Some engine issues also with oil leaks. It was something every week! Oh - the water issue. The water would collect below the windshield because leaves and whatnot would clog the drain and then it would eventually start coming into the footwell inside the car. That happened a few times.
    But I loved that car and miss it. But it was a labor of love - super pain in the butt.

      I had an A6 of this generation at the time. It was new-ish and I was scarcely out of college. There were so many issues with repairs. Mine had the solar panel sunroof option that ran the interior fan, which was a really killer feature I wish automakers would bring back. Since mine had an engine oil pressure problem the dealer could never sort out, I fortunately was able to lemon law it because it started while the car was under warranty and continued during extended warranty. Wound up being an almost free car - I paid gas insurance and we split the difference on depreciation.

    It’s fascinazing how much Doug got wrong on this one, eventhough it might me just a regional thing.
    The first true Upmarket Audi used to be the Audi 200 (essentially just an Audi 100, with minor cosmetic differences, and 5 Cylinder Turbo engines+Quattro) Limited by the „No engines with more then 5 Cylinders Embargo for 30 Years“ after VW bought Audi from Mercedes.
    You might know it from the James Bond Movie „The Living Daylights“
    The V8 was essentially just an Audi 200 build on the new „D“ Plattform with A V8 engine in it after the embargo was finally over. But with a different Name to make it even more clear, that it was rocking a V8 engine.
    It still shared a lot of parts with the Audi 100.
    After that the D2 Generation was released in 1994. the Predecessor to the Car in the Video.
    It already had both the Full Aluminum Body and Space Frame (The IAA Mock-Up called „ISF“ is still displayed in the Audi Museum)
    It was also offered as the Regular A8 and the A8L.
    You also had the S8 with a 360HP V8 AND you could order it with a 6.0L W12 engine with 420HP.
    My father actually got one as company Car (he used to work for Audi at that time)
    The D2 A8 even had sth like a Proto MMI, that essentially works exactly like the D3 version from the Video, but is contained to your typical Double Slot Infotainment device, instead of being fully integrated.
    The D3 in the Video was nothing special really. It’s only merrit is sharing the Plattform with the Ill fated Phateon and the Continental GT.
    And being the star of the second and third Transporter Movies of course.
    The main Focus were the V8 Turbo Diesel Power Plants that were newly designed for this generation.
    The Design of the D2 was actually a lot more influential then the D3.
    Especially compared to the offerings of Mercedes, BMW und Lexus of the Time.
    The D3 even debuted without the Single Frame Grill (and looks 10 times better without it IMO)
    The only Reason you might feel like the D3 is the „big“ and „important“ Audi is that Audi and VAG were essentially at the absolute Peak of the Auto Industry in the late 2000s and early 2010s with VW even overtaking Toyota as the biggest car manufacturer in the world for a short time.
    The D2 A8 was also so popular that it almost got a release as a Coupe and even more interesting as a Wagon (The Avantissimo). Both Variants were shown at the IAA and were extremely well received.

Some of the tech (solar roof as in the new Merc EQS, keyless entry, and the driver screen) are just now being widespread today. Ok, so Audi may have been trying to keep up with the 12 cylinders in the Jag/Merc/BMW of the time and the A8’s base 4.2L V8 is a solid performer, but the fact that this car came out and is still operational is pretty amazing.

    I don’t get how Doug reviewing a car with a friend managed to generate so many comments thinking he’s trying to stop being in videos. Although I obviously watch Doug’s channel for his opinion and style, I didn’t have any problem with Kennan’s presentation and I wouldn’t mind seeing him again. Even if Doug is trying to step away from youtube, I’d say he’s earned it by now. The guy’s made hundreds of car reviews for us to watch for free, built a successful business, and bought his dream car.

    Doug, this better not be an attempt to introduce someone new to the channel to hand it over, I know you are doing well, but people keep coming back and enjoying your videos because of you and the niche you have reviewing cars.

    I'd love to see solar panels integrated into the roof of vehicles now. I know they won't generate enough for EV's, but to charge laptops, phones, etc, or to help keep the cars battery charged / emergency jumping of some sort, would be pretty cool.

    2:37 Attended a seminar the other day, even nowadays, aluminum intensive vehicles are somewhat rare. Audi was among some of the companies in the early 2000s to join Ford and JLR to design and build an aluminum intensive vehicle, but ultimately called it a quit over the following years.

    This car is constant state of "one repair away from being left under a tree;" you do not buy this car unless you are a certified mechanic and aren't sick enough of working on other people's car and you want to work on your own or you know one of these mechanics personally. Oh, and the reason that D1 & D2 did not really sell is because Audi was recovering from the 1986 unintended acceleration woes that caused their sales to literally tank 80% overnight. They didn't recover their 1986 sales figures till 2001.

    Plz don't this as criticism of any kind.Kennen is fantastic in garage talk videos.But in reviews,somehow i am not liking him. Reviews are Doug's THING.He mastered this throughout the years. So, i request doug to do reviews by himself and have kennen in other videos

    • @TheOne2Know
      @TheOne2Know Před 11 měsíci

      He mastered it through out the years as you said, why not let Kennan have a chance to acquire similar skills over a similar period of time like you afforded Doug? Nobody is perfectly natural and engaging on camera the second they step into frame for the first time. Kennan seems to be more introverted than Doug to start with, so has an even larger hurdle to overcome if he wants to come across as engaging with the audience.

    • @narayanaprasadavanigadda4981
      @narayanaprasadavanigadda4981 Před 11 měsíci

      Maybe wh u r saying is right but I don't know man doug does this so masterfully that I don't even want to see anyone else. And this is Doug's channel and not like a publication or something like topgear or autotrader or car and driver where we expect to see new presenters from time to time. So maybe he should continue to do reviews on his own as I said earlier.
      But this is entirely my opinion though. So each to their own I guess
