Ballard Berkeley was brilliant as the confused Major. His timing was impeccable.
Yeh,and always totally obsessed with cricket.
Exclaiming "Boycott made the century" to the rat.
Ha
Yes and 'I took her to see ...INDIA!', 'India, Major?', 'At The Oval!'
His performance was brilliant.
“How’s she got a nail in her?”
@Equality Peace Yes. Quite common for retired, single/widowed people back then, if they had a decent pension. Too expensive for most these days.
1:41 I love Cleese’s slow facial change from annoyed to confusion to comprehension to anger
I just realised that if the Major has had a shotgun hidden in his room for months or years without Polly finding it, she isn't a very good cleaner.
It's a hotel, he shouldn't have been there months or years, the fact the the major & 2 elderly sisters were there right the way through, made the place seem like an old peoples home
@@Bobsmith-gq5quWell the major is supposed to be the longest staying guest, so he’s been there a goodly amount of time at least. Still, it’s a mystery how he ever managed to get a gun into the hotel in the first place; although being a former army man, he may have a permit for it.
If the shotgun and cartridges was in the Major's suitcase, Polly very likely wouldn't have found it. Hotel cleaning staff have no business going through personal belongings.
@@Bobsmith-gq5quthink they can stay as long as they keep paying, no limits. I don't think the UK has any particular laws that limit the length of stays in a hotel or guest house. Some establishments may set their own limits for length of stay.
There is such a thing as an extended stay hotel. Hotels, then and now, can set their own rental terms, with a lower rate for extended residency.
The Major fires his shotgun..“bloody television exploding again"
Haha
"Stay where you are, old chap. Don't move". 👍
He may be a background character, but "Fawlty Towers" wouldn't be the best TV ever had to offer without Major Gowen. Ballard Berkeley, thank you SO MUCH 👏!!
PS: Thanks for the clip, Fawlty's Vault!
"no germans this week Major!" Brilliant comedy XDDDD
Major = Fantastic actor!
Not legal anymore, Major. Murder actually.
@@felixcuthbert2719 It was this big with the tail! XD
@@ADCFproductionsWhat did you say it was, Major ?
@@felixcuthbert2719 But they're animals!:)
You can hear a feller in the audience goin' "Oh, no..." when the major goes after his shotgun, at 0:30
Haha nice catch
@@joakimberg7897 I've watched the entire series at least twice every year for the last 25 years and I never caught that :-D This is why I love youtube :-)
@@TheAmateurEditor yeah there are some perks to it
Would be better without the canned laughter.
@@Dick_Damage This wasn't canned laughter, that is laughter dubbed in post. Everything (aside from scenes shot outside, obviously) was in front of a live audience, hence the mics picking up someone going "oh no", you wouldn't hear that in a canned laugh track.
"Bloody television exploding again!"
CLASSIC! 😂😂
"No Germans staying this week, Major."
Ballard Berkeley had fabulous facial expressions!! He deserves more credit
“Strike, strike, strike - why do we bother Fawlty?” , says the old major in this clip. With all the current disputes going on in Britain at the moment, this quote remains as relevant as ever as when it was first broadcast - in 1979, the year of the Winter of Discontent.
1978 year of discontent going into 79.
Yup, but many people were lured by the tories: it was not labourist govt faults, it was a thing that was happening in all western world, because of the 1973 oil crisis (and the 1979 that was going to start in some month). Thus, Thatcher won (and the year later even Reagan) just for saying big lies about "socialist governments not being able to govern economies"... but you can judge by yourself that these were lies by the simple fact... that in Italy, France and Sweden and it was said the opposite!
In these countries the centre-right govts were accused of generating high inflations, high unenployment rates and high interest rates!
And thus... in the 80s these countries were ruled by left-socialist governments!
That's the BIG problem... in every nation every politic class tells a personalized story of the international events...
@@LucaLindholmSocialism and Socialists always destroy nations and their economies. Socialists don't know how to run ANYTHING except for their big mouths, and OTHER peoples lives! FIFY!
Ballard Berkeley is basically playing the same character he did in the TV series Father Dear Father(1969-73). Sort of Scatterbrain ex military person.
Eating the nuts if you please. Classic.
What a delight.
I used to watch FT with my grandparents when I was five or six. They allways laughed their head off and I didn´t understand why. Sweet memories. When I watch the crappy tv program now I could cry.
"Bloody television exploding again!" 🤣 Because exploding televisions are a problem...........
In the old days, CRT televisions did have problems.
Only just got it fixed and it goes and does it again! 🙄😂
They were, CRT big vacuum, big implosion.
'Everybody stay in your rooms. There's an insane guest with a gun!'
This one's got to be my favourite episode hahaha A vermin, a dirty rat hahaha It cracks me up every time hahahaha
A lot of other comedy programmes don't stand the test of time,....But FT is just comedy gold and will just be funny for the rest of eternity,....
I agree. I hadn't watched Fawlty Towers for many years. I wondered whether I would be disappointed. Not a bit. So many great characters and the Major is one of my favourites.
It is so condensed and fast paced that is still totally hilarious to this day.
no u
Timeless classics. Absolutely 1 of the best of British comedy. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm going to rebuff you... It's one of the best period.
"It wasn't a television at all, it was just this gun!" 😂
"Vermin..."
When the Major mentions "vermin" Basil assumes he is referring to Germans.
I think he actually misheard it as 'German'
It's brilliant from start to finish
I knew a vermin once.
Me too. Good card player! But mind you. I wouldn't give her time of day.
Nearly 50 years and i still have to wipe away the tears 😂
Perhaps one of the best bits of the whole 12 episodes but a difficult choice to say the least. Would imagine the Major would have been a big cricket fan, except for than one in the googlies😂😂😂😂
Do you need any help major? DONT MOVE!! so funny..
The inspector mouths the words that Sybil speaks. LOL!
Eating the nuts if you please!
Hahahahaha classic comedy show Fawlty Towers! 😂😂😂
"Forgive and forget... at least, we pretend we do."
Looks like they have a visit from Mr rat.
He's really going this time.😂
Ballard Berkeley died 1988. Aged 83
You can’t beat classic tv
Bloody television exploding again 📺
Legend
No Germans this week major hahaha
Kneed in the ballards - painful..
Strike strike strike……nothing has changed!
Telling rat about Boycotts century 🤣
We haven’t got any in this week! 😂😂😂
The major is actually very smart
Love that one what was that bloody television exploding again
strike strike strike why do we bother fawlty. didn’t know you did major that was so funny
2:23 "GOD! What was that?!"
I always truly thought that they didn't have dishwashers back in the 70's.
They had dishwashers, garbage disposals and microwaves before that, in the 60s. The 20th century wasn't the Dark Ages, you know 🤣
only commercial ones
@@ajrwilde14 Nope, my family had a Maytag dishwasher in the 70s. Don't say things you know nothing about.
Dishwashers were first invented in the 1850s 😂😂
They had commercial dishwashers.
I like the way that major gets his shotgun and points it at fawlty because it looked like he was about to shoot him which was sooooooooooooooooooooooooo funny 😀😃😄😆😅😂🤣
🐀
Faulty towers get a resident cat
Boycott made a century!
Didn’t know you did major
Wheeee!!
No Germans this week major haha
Good morning major , there are the fucking papers !
You couldn't make that type of comedy now...blasted pc
Baloney
Why, do you think rats would be writing indignant e-mails to the BBC?
@@VarnaVix I would if I were the Rat,..Bit of a stereotype don't you think ??
@@westboundbadger Jokes aside, it was fairly pro-rat. This is the first time I saw a character with a pet rat.
joo slime.
Falty towwer is funny.
The woke crowd will end up getting Fawlty Towers banned, the funniest TV show ever! Frank Zappa was right when he facetiously predicted that society would eventually ban music. If they ever catch Putin alive, they should tie him down on a chair, do a Brazil eye thingy on him, while forcing him to watch Basil and company.
Er, how can you ban something that isn't on anyway?
Woke crowd? And yet "non woke" muppets are the ones who say telling your child santa claus is real is "lying" to them?😂😂😂...right wing hypocritical rubbish as always
Hampshire won!
did it!
As I get older, Sybil looks better and better. She actually has an awful cute figure.
Vermin, Fawlty ... vermin
Don't worry Major. I'll call in Donald Trump .... he says he knows how to deal with vermin.
