I suspect that hoids flute (found in the tower) probably has some investure planted in it. I suspect it has his plans overall and why he was fou-strated when kal lost it in oathbringer.

Why kaladin lost his brand. When you dad does something, its no longer "cool".
I don't think it had anything to do with Lirin wearing the symbol, I think it was the effect of the 4th Ideal on Kaladin. He can no longer be a slave to his failures.

@prakash sahu I’d say that’s pretty apt, but I’d like to add that it probably had just as much to do with his “sash” brand, and him - deep down - truly believing that he was a danger to those around him, both because of his actions and choices, and because of his inability to protect / save everyone.
I love how much Kal’s story in this book is basically an epic fantasy version of Die Hard!

Dalinar asking Jasnah to write the undertext to what essentially amounts to his legacy is very interesting when you compare it to what happened in the prologue between Navani and Gavilar.
I loved how Dalinar was always like “I’ll never be as great a man as my brother,” but like, in this book it’s very obvious Dalinar is (or atleast turned out to be) a much MUCH better man than Gavilar ever could’ve been. The difference between the two of them!
TOdium blew my mind and I’m freaking out for what he did to Hoid

This was top 3-5 for sure. For me the Tien vision was so freaking amazing and I had no idea it was going to happen. I knew something would happen with Maya so wasn’t as surprised, still amazing though and credit to BranSan that I can still be shocked and amazed for scenes that I’m already anticipating.
That was fantastic. I really hope Maya recovers more.
favorite moment: Jasnah just said one word... "Wit". Then, "Harsher", then "Wit, harsher". She has a man torn down, and it only cost her 4 words. That's why she's queen.
That was such an epic moment for Jasnah! I got chills.
Something really interesting happens at the end of Adolin's trial. Just before Maya's outburst, he says/thinks to her "Take some of my strength" and he feels a warmth inside him as Maya looks at him. I like to think that this essentially like the nahel bond in reverse. Usually the spren are lending there strength to damaged and broken human beings, but here Adolin is doing it for Maya.
I'm not really sure what the long-term ramifications of this will be but it's got me really excited. It also fits really nicely with Adolin needing a new purpose now that duelists are sort of obsolete in a world of Fused and Radiants. Adolin has been proving throughout the whole book that he is really good at providing emotional support to people in need.
Yeah if Adolin revives Maya, I don't think it's going to be the same as our other Radiant relationships. -Eric
It's been my theory since Oathbringer that Adolin is going to fill in the cracks in Maya's soul, rather the other way around. That scene only made me more confident in my theory.
Not sure what that will mean for their bond, but I don't think it'll be a traditional Edgedancer manifestation.

Maya gets emotional when another Starts bad mouthing her so she summons Adolin in to Shadesmar as a shield to offer emotional rebuttal!

I was so happy with his role in this book! I was afraid he’d be forgotten!
I really wanna know what happens if Dabbid bonds a spren. Either it heals his Intellectual Disability and he's an average intellect who grew up with ID and lost it but still has those thought patterns, which would be interesting to read OR keeps the ID and will have to find a place for himself and his radiant abilities (hopefully outside of combat because that would be messed up, even if he can heal)
Dabbid is love, Dang it is life.
My grandmother passed away less than a week after Rythm of War. When I learned about it I remembered Tien’s words to Kaladin. So I told my father about it (it was his mother) and it made him smile in a dark time. That moment made Rythm of War my favorite book for what it did for my dad when he needed it.

Can we all just be sad that since Syl was separated from Kal when Hoid told the dragon and the dog story, Syl cannot turn into a little dog or a little dragon?
She could if Kaladin focuses on it right?
About Cultivation's plan for Taravangian, I'm certain it will include Lift.
Cultivation herself appeared to grant the wishes of 3 people: Dalinar, so he wouldn't be tempted by Odium, Taravangian, so he would become Odium and Lift, so she will... Maybe become Cultivation's champion?
I was sooooooooooooo damn relieved when Shallan didn't kill Kalak. This was one of the most anxiety inducing parts of the whole book for me >.>
yeah, adding with those epigraph that Kalak wrote that he seems about to die before Shallan about to kill him (which thankfully she didn't) really makes me humming to Anxiety

I feel like Taravangium becoming Odium strengthens not only the Dalinar becoming Honor theory, but actually taking the Shards of both Honor and Odium (Unite them).
Cultivation has been playing such a long game with the specific people she touches (Lift, Dalinar, Taravangium) as several characters note - and she tells Taravangium that her hope was that he would change into someone who can "bear this power with Honor" (think that's a cheeky plot wink from Brandon").
I can't help but feel that what she did to Dalinar made him exactly that - we've seen him manage the Thrill after all which is the closest thing I can imagine to the feeling of Odium.
Plus, Cultivation doesn't strike me as a stupid person (or dragon) and turning Taravangium into Odium...bad idea. Unless she foresaw a different outcome down the line - that of Dalinar literally bearing the power of Odium with Honor: which would maybe make him the Shard of War (step up from the Highprince of War)?
It would be interesting to see what might happen with a Vessel holding two Shards that are not antithetical to each other. Preservation and Ruin have metaphorically neutered Sazed (to match his physical state haha) because of the opposite nature of their powers, but we know now that Honor and Odium are compatible. I'd be very interested to see what happens if a Vessel holds two extremely similar Shards like Honor and Valor.
It would be an interesting way around Dalinar becoming Odium's servant if he loses the contest of champions midway through the book. TOdium would think he's won and decide to do something that sets Dalinar on a path to taking both shards.
There are some holes, but I think it's possible.
What if Dalinar was suppose to take Odium’s shard during the siege when he first opens the perpendicularity, but he wasn’t ready. Zef was there, Odium was there and his kids were there (and Lift was there to save any of them in case the got hurt), all these things I can imagine being necessary go Dalinar to ascend.
Unite them!
We learned that there are two ways spren can permanently die in this book. The Anti-light and whatever Ishar did to those spren corpses
As someone who has no one to share my experiences with, these podcasts really alleviate me. It's very long and it felt short. I'm waiting for the next ones. Shannon feels like a kindred spirit. She spoke so well of things I also felt in this book but could not explain, that i find myself changing my mind about things we disagree with. Please let her be on the next podcast! thanks for this guys, it was really great and funny and relatable.
Well the "next" one was letting other cast members react to Stormlight, but she's not going anywhere. When you think about it, this book can't sell as well as it does without there being far too many people being silent out there.
For the intellectual as well as emotional stuff, though, I can't believe I found it so shocking that my fellow travelers at shardcast were as insightful as they are. On the other hand, there can't be as many people reading/listening/(typing) to/(at) shardcast without there being way, way too many people being silent out there... As someone who, like you, was very happy to hear from this podcast after first read, I still think it's almost selfish to be silent after reading these books

As much as I agree with you that shardcast is awesome, there's a crazy supply side argument to be made about getting as many perspectives as seem continuously helpful, and I'm not sure if we've reached that point

For a Wit Story I found it extremely underwhelming.
That story was cute but I think I had heard a similar one at some point somewhere but I can’t remember...
I live for Jasnah and Hoid!!! I think it's great that she found someone who she feels is a good compliment to her intellect, which is what she values about herself more than anything.
I believe that the Jasnah & Hoid relationship is important because of Hoid's memories being destroyed. If no one has a closer connection to him no one could realize there's a deeper problem when he's unable to remember something that he could before.
When Maya said "WE CHOSE!" was the first moment where I lost it
Felt like the Jasnah-Hoid relationship was set up for the next book; in that Hoid has had something profound done to him, and we kind of need someone to notice that. Only three people on Roshar that will know him well enough to pick that out: Jasnah, Sigzil, and Cultivation.
Thinking that book five will have the three of them notice something, and possibly share information to work out what’s wrong.
And Navani is, by far, the best Kholin.
His spren might feel something odd in their connection too

It’s arguable that Hoid is one of the few people who could be a match for Jasnah, as few are as intelligent and competent as Jasnah.
Also they obviously have a history and she knows things about the Cosmere as well as him. We don’t know exactly what they have been through at this point, hey maybe flashbacks for book 5.

Finally finished. I think I can easily say my favourite moment in RoW, maybe the entire series, was the final Eshonai flashback... such a tragic character and that final moment of mercy from the Stormfather had me in tears.
I love Navani but I was sooo hoping Dabbid was gonna become the Siblings bondsmith they seemed like such a good match.
Now I'm hoping he'll bond the night watcher

What Order do you think Rlain will join? I've seen potentially Willshapers, but that driving NEED for freedom and exploration that was present in Eshonai and Venli doesn't seem to be there in him.

Rhythm of War has better pacing than OathBringer, with each part getting better than the previous ones.
I flew through it. It was nonstop.

PPS: Moash is the opposite of Brandon's reverse-then-pull. You start out liking him, then Brandon makes you hate him, then Brandon _keeps him around._
PPPS: Rayse does say that he can't stop the fused from returning anymore ... maybe if Leshwi dies she'll be playing hide and seek and trying to get back to Roshar before Odium's agents capture her.

@@brightwatcher3757 I didn't know how much I needed it till I read this comment but is know my biggest want from the series (that I know is a long shot). It's tied with Kaladin taking the Shard of Honor.
Raboniel is the second bestStormlight Villain. But I think Taravangian was best villain(is that how it would be in book 5?)
I found large parts of this book to be a really hard read. Oppressive darkness, slowly creeping up on me - grabbing my throat and tightening my chest. I did not realise how many emotions I'd been building up and holding in, only to be released when Kaladin said he knew the words and was strong for Syl. I legitimately read the whole passage with streaming tears... damn you Sanderson
My goodness, throughout most of Part 5, I was crying. I had held up so many emotions from Shallan's moment with Veil, to all of Kaladin's miserable moments in the book.
Then Part 5 happened:
1. Teft died- I had to put the book down for 30 minutes just to cry. And THINK. "Still with hope, Teft died". Nope!
2. Kaladin's reaction to Teft's death- more tears.
3. The entire Moments chapter- I was a full on waterfall. I couldn't stop and had to reread six times just to catch what was being said....wow! I cried!
(More action scenes and triumph and joy- journey before destination, bastard, I thought I was done with the emotions and then the FOLLOWING happened, and I was back to crying again)
4. Raboniel's death scene- she was finally free. Tears were shed!
5. Venli reunites with the other Listeners.
6. And the chapter that fully broke me AGAIN- A Final Gift. Eshonai got a happy ending, I cried.
@@henrywayne5724 The Eshonai scene though... I think that was a way of BS saying it's ok to cry, and they be happy tears. My lord though, Teft dying with hope had me broken. He was, by FAR, my favourite character in the Cosmere. That one is going to stick for a long time.
I am not surprised to see this reaction. As I kind of implied on my spoiler-free review, yeah, this book DEFINITELY could be really hard to get through for that reason. I thought its conclusion was just spectacular though. -Eric

What effected me the most was Lirin acting as if Kalladin has become an ACTUAL MONSTER for the way he killed the singers in the tower.
I picked up on the dead-eye cryptic as soon Adolin started talking to the shopkeeper Inkspren. Because the timeline was just perfect and the candidates were soo few especially in the way Adolin put it (like the person must have been very young and inexperienced/ill-prepared and must have killed the Spren because of stress). The fore-shadowing was great on that and what Pattern used to say previously.
My favourite scene was Lirin meeting all of the people inspired by Kaladin in the nurse ward, just reading that people get up because at the end of the day Kaladin gets up as well was so powerful to me, especially with that being clashed with him entering his darkest moments people still saw him as a beacon.
When you talk about the "we chose" scene and people who are overlooked having agency, you leave out Dabbid. He is totally overlooked due to his silence and it turns out he was playing everyone from the start

@@17thShard will you guys be exploring the possibility of Sleepless in the Ghostbloods? I know you're sold on Kelsier as the "Lord of Scars" but this could potentially refer to a Sleepless whose seams appear as scars, and Mraize's facial scars could be a result of seams from imperfect seams in cremling breedings. Also, cremling spies could explain how the Ghostbloods stay so well informed.
To date that scene with Tien is still the only one to bring me to tears. RoW May suffer from being the middle book in a 5-part arc (especially with a lot of Venli and Eshonei stuff being moved to earlier books), but damn the emotional beats Brandon snuck in hit hard.
My brother asked what Wit was doing while I was reading this book and I said, "He's continuing Radiant therapy" and my brother said something along the lines of "Wait, like he set up a booth and is doing therapy?". Lowkey Brandon, c'mon. This needs to happen, give us Wit's therapy booth with the couch and everything.

I cried when Venli was learning how to use her powers. One of the best moments in the book. She was sooo meant for this.
2:03:00 in regards to the shared authorship, it reminds me of the mistborn "interludes" of Allomancer Jak, where his partner tries to balance out his wild stories.
Jasnah and Wit are a PERFECT combo. Love the video but this is the only thing I think you all will feel wrong about eventually
I personally thought that Kaladin having to learn to use Adhesion and Reverse Lashings to fight was awesome, he ignored it most of the time in the past, so I enjoyed every one of the node scenes personally. However I do get why it could be felt as repetitive.
I saw someone comment elsewhere that it felt a bit too much like a video game level. I see that, but I also see how it was necessary in order to give a time limiter for the plot (thereby forcing Kaladin to act).
What the Stormfather did for Eshonai was my favourite part, was an unexpected re-visiting of that character!
I'm assuming that what Tod did to Hoids memories is essentially equivalent to what Ruin was doing to Copperminds? Which brings up the terrifying possibility that he didn't just erase some of Hoids memories, he also edited some...
Did Taravangium/Odium really take those memories or did Hoid recognize what was happening and used his abilities to make it seem like he lost them? As Kaladan said, Hoid always seemed to have lightweaving abilities. We also know that Hoid could have been a God like Raise but didn't want to.

Well the scene does say the Hoid experienced actual geniune fear which he hadn't felt for thousands of years.
Then he couldn't sing right and such things, had the feeling he was missing 'something' etc.
Todium definitely got Hoid.

Regarding Teft not just swearing the 4th ideal and not having to wait for Kaladin that you guys talk about at around 1:07:00, it seemed like Teft must have been closer to the 4th ideal than other Windrunners since he was mumbling and tossing and turning in his coma more. I know that Windrunners had this advantage in general due to having Adhesion as a surge, but Teft seemed moreso. When he was able to manifest his shardspear for a second before death it gave me even more confidence that he was close.
It also makes me think about the line from part 1 where Kaladin wonders if other Windrunners were actually struggling with the 4th ideal as much as him, or if they were just waiting for him.
So here's my theory: other Windrunners 4th Ideals will look quite a bit different than Kaladin's. I don't think "I can't protect everyone" is something Teft would have struggled with. A lot of people who take front-line protection duties in our world could probably make this Ideal. I think this was a bit Kaladin-centric, and we saw:

Lopen's 3rd Ideal take a pretty different turn from other Windrunners as well. "I will try to protect people from myself" rather than the "I'll protect those I hate" vibe.
This whole thing kind of makes sense with other info, like 5th Ideal Skybreakers becoming the law. That's gotta mean something pretty different for each Skybreaker, right? I get the impression that these later ideals are a bit more personally attuned and allow a little bit more looseness in how they are defined as people progress. And that might be what actually makes them more difficult to achieve.
Szeth is my favourite character and I was super bummed when it was Dalinars book in book 3 and not Stones Unhallowed. In retrospect I like it more because it means my favourite character gets his book to end of the front 5! And nightblood!!!!!!!!!
First off, mandatory "FUCK MOASH".
Second, I loved that Moash executed his plan perfectly to crush Kaladin's spirit, and told the Pursuer "hey, he's blue-screened right now...do *NOT* touch him. If he reboots, he will learn you some buttball." And then the Pursuer rebooted Kaladin and got absolutely wrecked in zero seconds flat. The use of Windrunner surgebinding in such a brutal application was fantastic.
Kaladin killed the Defeated One the same way Kel killed the inquisitor. Stuck him to a wall a removed his head.
I’ve never so instantly joined a patreon before! You guys do amazing work and help me organize my cosmere thoughts and I really appreciate the time you put into it. You guys really elevate Brandon’s work and validate a lot of his intricacies. Keep doing great work!
It hurt my heart when The Sibling told Navani that she wasn’t worthy. But…when she stood up and rebuked that lie, knowing her true worth… that was so healing.
Me when they mentioned a traitor among the Lightweavers: You won't get me this time, Brandon! I remember the OreSeur/TenSoon thing.

The OreSeur/TenSoon moment was the one that made me fully embrace Brandon Sanderson's writing; it was BRILLIANT.

In regards to Testament and Shallan's Shardblade(s): We know that dead Shardblades cannot be dismissed and summoned until they have the gemstone set in their pommel. So I think that she was only summoning Pattern in Words of Radiance. That being said I have no idea where Testament is. Maybe chillin' somewhere in the Davar household?
I don't think the rules need to be the same per se since Shallan is Testament's original Radiant. The gemstone might not be required. -Eric

On Cultivation and Taravodium.
One of the biggest themes in the Cosmere is Vessels succumbing to their Shard's Intent. I now firmly believe that Cultivation became completely driven by the power's Intent after Tanavast died. While you can look at her actions as an attempt to get revenge on Rayse, it seems like she is much more concerned about how static Roshar became after the Desolations/Returns began. This conflict on Roshar now looks a lot like Ruin and Preservation on Scadrial, where they too were stuck in a loop of creating something, watching it do its thing for a while, and destroying it. Now, if Todium succeeds in freeing himself, both Roshar and Odium will finally be able to grow beyond this millennia-long conflict. For me the Dabbid chapter had me teary eyed. He was a character I never gave a great amount of thought to but he might have saved the entire Cosmere. His story was SO sad. Whew lol

For the Leshwi attuning the Rhythm of Destruction. Could've been a sorta instinct react, I see radiance = I attack.
I’m pretty sure Odium was prepping more than one champion and Kal was one of the options. Kal was definitely tipping toward his passions when he killed The Defeated.
I love Dalinar, and it would be sad to see him give in to Odium due to a contract, but it would fit his character. I would love, in a weird way, to see him travel the Cosmere as Odium's lieutenant and destroy everything.
I'd like to see him go to the mistborn world and get spiked up
If he did become odium's servant, would he be able to bring the thrill back?

Book 5 will not be just 10 days. The 10 days will be Part 1, culminating in the Battle Of Champions. The other 4 parts are dealing with the fallout of Dalinar losing.
I feel like these flashback were good but were kind of like a catch up for the stories of what we missed due to Venli & Eshoni not being main characters in the other books.
I liked the part where Venli was like "who is Ba-Ado-Mishram" and Ulim explained that lore. All that lore WAS in Oathbringer for the most part, but it's good to make it more obvious. -Eric

What if the Eshonai and Venli flashbacks were woven into all books from Words of Radiance. That would have been more relevant and interesting for us

I know I'm 2 years behind-having only read and finished RoW in August (sad, I know) but just want to say this has been probably my favorite book discussion I've ever listened to/watched. I so enjoyed this. Can't believe it was over 2 hours long. Now onto part 2.

I think Hoid and Jasnah's relationship makes sense: Jasnah has no time for silly romantic shit, but she *loves* intellectual pursuits, and Hoid is a secret galaxy brain. Similarly, Hoid doesn't really like people who are up their own ass, and Jasnah's head is firmly on her shoulders.
I totally agree. I never pictured Hoid or Jasnah being in a relationship with anyone let alone each other but as soon as I got to that passage it completely clicked in my brain and made complete sense.
The dragon and and dog was especially amazing on the audio book. Michael Kramer nailed it! Especially, right at the end!
You guys should do an episode about Jasnah, Shallan and Lift hunting The Ghost bloods called The Girls Get It Done
I think my favorite part was the conversation between Dalinar and Tarvangian. After reading it I was basically shaking and had to put the book down for a couple of minutes . A masterpiece of writing in my opinion.
If Dalanar does become Fused. I hope it's Kal's 5th ideal to kill Dal - "protecting" Dal from something he doesn't want to be, by killing him.
I believe that Cultivation has more power over Odium than you think. If she turns his intelligence all the way down then The Shard will likely take control and if she turns his intelligence up he will suppress the shard’s influence on him. There is a lot she can do with that.

A throes that has popped up for me for Kaladin is him becoming a new Harold to replace those that are lost, part of the reforming of the oathpact.
I really enjoyed this! I want to watch the second one right away, but staying up until 3 am would probably be a bad idea!
I believe Kaladin's brand finally left because he let that part of himself go, he was still a slave in his own mind. A slave to his own illness, a slave to his way of thinking, a slaves to his failures. It was a symbol of his failures to protect, and finally accepting that he has to let those failures go, that no longer was the defining part of who he is, he was released from failures.
Kaladin will find a different way of fighting in the future I guess. I love how multi faceted he is.
Kaladin would never become Odium's champion. He would try and get the Fused to become Honorable

I kept thinking of Kaladin's mental health quest as him forming Kaladin's Battle Shock Support Group for Anxiety and Depression.
Back on this one in 2023 and getting mad excited for Book 5 next year
I have a theory that Ba-Ado-Mishram has something to do with the whale Spren that Axies the collector sees, if I'm not wrong BaAdo got thrown into the ocean so maybe it can still have some kind of effect like we saw
I had the exact same thing happen as Shannon-I was like “I’ll finish this section” and then the Sibling seems basically doomed and Navani has failed...not a fun way to try to sleep.
Loved Shannon's final thoughts at the end regarding Brandon's "huminization" of the ancient singers.
My favorite part of the book was either the trial, the swearing of the fourth Ideal, or Taravangian.
My least favorite part of the book was definitely the Venli flashbacks. They weren't bad, but I just didn't care most of the time. I liked the flashback at the assassination, I liked Eshonai's flashbacks, but I didn't really care about the Venli flashbacks because it was mostly stuff I already knew. The closest thing to a mystery it answered was how she learned about Stormspren and the exact moment she started feeling that she messed up, neither of which were particularly revelatory like what happened with Tien, what happened with Shallan's father, and what happened with Evi.
Lyft and the chicken hit me super hard. I’m only like 20 min into the video but I think that’s one of my favorite bits.
