First Shardcast I watch, it was great! You guys are doing a good job! Regarding the Horneaters... so much we don't know yet. We were given small tidbits, and it's easy to overlook. There's the fact that they're aware of what the perpendicularity is, and they trade with people on the other side. There are guardians for it. There's the bow mumbo jumbo. They can see spren, and from what you've said bond with them temporarily. We have a lot to learn about here... I can't wait for more about them!
I think in general people do like him. I would say it's maybe something like 10% of the fandom who are not really liking the flavour he brings. I can get so lost in Brandon's works when anyone says there is a character they don't like I am always amazed. Like a few people really dislike Wayne which I find surprising but he's another one that relies on oddball humour as a major part of his character. So yeah a very individualised character. Still from my exp the vast majority love The Lopen, it is just a significant enough minority to be notable.
I got the notification for this shardcast and literally yelled with excitement. I loved this novella and holy shit the Sleepless are wild. I was also a Lopen hater but he really did grow on me in this. Especially him bonding with Rysn over how people with disabilities have to manage other people's perceptions. Regarding the inspiration for Huio being brilliant, I have worked in restaurants much of my life and seriously, in every kitchen full of immigrants there are engineers, scientists, experts in the humanities, artists, everything. People who have skills and education and passion but have a hard time learning a new language, or their credentials from back home aren't accepted in the US and they can't afford to go to school again. All over the country I've seen this, with groups of people from all over the world. Oh, and nice info for the Herdazian language having specific words for different kinds of cousins. Like, I know in some human languages there are different words for paternal and maternal aunts and uncles, and cousins by that relation. Sudanese has distinct relational words for every kind of cousin, whereas Hawaiian doesn't distinguish between siblings and first cousins at all. So Lopen calling everyone "cousin" is literally just nuance lost in translation, plus his general Lopen-ness.
Evgeni, thank you for what you said about this book teaching you about living with a disability. I’m so happy that this book is able to do that and I hope everyone reads it with such an open mind. Also, thank you for addressing it here. It means a lot to me :)
I thought that was a great power of this book and seemed really well handled. I would be really interested in how it comes across to a parapalegic reader with actual life experience. Rock: I believe that all Horneaters have gemhearts. I believe that the Sighted have bonded a spren inside their gemhearts, perhaps a special spren while swimming in the pools of the perpendicularity.
I interpreted Rock and the 'Bow of hours' being a shard-like weapon/key to hold open and/or close the perpendicularity. Being a hereditary role (possibly for sons/daughters of a particular order 3rd son, 4th etc) this would be how his family line has always been able to see spren. Alsocpossibly signalling the return of old gods and new. Leading to him leaving to find shards as the changes grow from war to desolation.
First off the very last sentence of the story just happened to be at the very end of a kindle page due to the size formatting I have. As such I had not realised it had just ended and swiped to the next page expecting more text and instead got a close up photo of Brandon's face. Well that was certainly unexpected, one moment reading, next moment being stared at... Next thing - I wonder if Chiri Chiri having gotten to nibble on some voidlight in addition to stormlight is responsible for her more impressive growth than the other known Larkins? Last thing - Reading Huio's reaction to being saved by the Lopen reminded me of a scene from one of the Red Dwarf novelizations where Kryten is mortified at having been saved from a shape shifting GELF by the Talkie Toaster. He knows just how insufferable the smug little appliance will be over being the hero, hilarious.
Crem's not too complicated. As I understand it, it's basically pulverized bits of rock carried by highstorms; the regular hurricane-force winds on Roshar erode the rocky landscape bit by bit, and as the highstorm passes, this powdered rock (crem) mixes with the rain and falls with it. It'll settle out of water if you let it sit, at which point you can shape it into things and let it dry; the resulting crem is probably somewhere between clay and sandstone in terms of Earth analogues. If you don't do anything about it, though, it'll accumulate on surfaces over time; this is why people have to scrape crem off of walls to avoid buildup, and why old abandoned buildings look weird and lumpy, because crem buildup has basically covered them like what happened at the oathgate on the Shattered Plains. Note that this is just what I think is the case, based on what I've read; for all I know, in book 5 Brandon could reveal that crem is secretly the physical manifestation of one of the Unmade or something.
The sleepless seem related to autonomy. Also the larkin are too similar to dragons to not be cultivations creation. Ercs theory on perception related to spren strains is one I hold myself
Oathbringer Chapter 42 mentions a heap of thousands of strange cremlings burnt and smoking...the sleepless we’re united with radiants and fought in the desolations! Can’t wait for the sleepless shard cast 💥💥💥

The funniest thing is that "Hui" in Bulgarian means "dick" and "huio" is literally a way of addressing people. I had a lot of giggles when you were pronouncing it xDD

Just curious if I pin pointed the accent right :D Edit: I just heard the confirmation from him :D P.s.: Evgeni, congrats on not laughing when discussing Huio's name pronounciation :D Honestly, it bugs me a little everytime I read it in my head.
I think the more you go along with ideals, the more personal and less general they become, so much so that the first ideal is universal for all orders. The third ideal of the Windrunners seem to always be “accept to protect the hardest people to you.” In Kaladin, so entrenched in the “us versus them” mentality that was branded on him as a soldier, protecting those he hates was the hardest. For Teft, who hates himself with a passion, accepting that he deserved it was the hardest, so on and so on. Doesn’t seem to be always based on who you hate, just on the hardest for yourself to accept to protect.
**spoilers** I haven’t read RoW preview chapters. And when I saw Queen Navani my brain corrected it to Queen Jasnah and about half way through I was like, ‘Wait, Jasnah is queen of Alethkhar not Urithiru.’ And immediately facepalmed.
I'm just a little bit confused about Cord because didn't Rock give her the shards he got for killing Amaram? So why did she have to look for more shards?
On reddit for the release chapters, Chapter Eighteen, Brando wrote "We released the Syl Interlude early through my newsletter (that comes after the Navani chapter) and tried to edit out any big spoilers" So I think the version we got edited how Cord got her shardplate.
@@MeMySkirtandI yeah, but I think I remember it also being mentioned in Oathbringer that Rock gave his shards to Cord. That's why I didn't think twice about it.
@@geosustento8894 I just checked the end of Oathbringer. The only mention I could find about what Rock did with his shards was on 1228 (the last paragraph before the epilogue) is that he won them, and gave Oathbringer back to Dalinar "A debt repaid"
OMG You guys I am anticipating all of those things and I do not know what to do with myself. The thing that I was hoping to see more, was a bit more of the world culture. Maybe learn a bit more of the port culture in different countries/regions. Overall I loved the book, but that was some of my hope as I began to read it.
We get some nice details of Thaylen sailing culture (which basically means almost all of the sailing culture in Roshar xD). Mostly female officers, male officers are usually on the military side of things and related to the sailing officers, superstitious and some details of that superstition, had a heavy hazing culture that’s been changed to something less harmful over the years, patriotic even when not part of the royal navy, weird divergence between captain and owner, respected owners are allowed to steer etc. etc. We didn’t get a lot of how their ports work, but since the thaylen navy is basically the only organized naval power in Roshar we got a pretty good image of how Rosharan sailing works
He definitely has said he was going for a heavy Mexican flavour especially with the food etc. yet the thing with Brandon is that he never just lifts things wholesale. What he does is use real world analogs to add power, legitimacy and reality to his cultures and world building. So it is very likely the family links of Greek or Italian culture probably has impacted this culture. It's more likely a melting pot than stright up. Really intersting comment, it's made me think of all the Italian parallels.
I didn't really rate Dawnshard unfortunately, it did a lot of things right, but I felt the conclusion was so convenient and generally somewhat weak. The payoff, despite all the Cosmere info-drops, just didn't land for me.
@@17thShard I still enjoyed it and am certainly excited to see what effects there will be from this in the future of the Cosmere, but yeah I just wish there had been more resistance, deliberation and struggle toward the end. It just felt too easy.

"let's talk about crem"
No joke, I have many questions about crem. It's one of the first things that has seriously confused me.
Hey, I actually want to do cremcast with David! I'm sure we will someday! -Eric
Once Huio had his Shardblade, I wonder why they didn't just go ahead and open the Akinah Oathgate from the Akinah side.
Clive Barker "Imajica" is a really good mesh of fantasy and horror. Just a tip for stuff to read.
On the first prologue, the way the horror of the battle is summed up is describing the blood on the ground: “red, orange, _purple._” well red is humans and orange is the singers… Maybe the purple was the sleepless
I had no idea people hated The Lopen, HOW??!?!?!
For me, I just never really found him funny. This gave him a lot more depth. -Eric
I like Lopen. Reminds me of Epictetus the Stoic philosopher. A crippled slave in a non too nice empire that never the less is widerdly happy.
Never try and seem wise to others.
"I will protect those who annoy the shit out of me" Huio
Hey Eric I know you don't do audiobooks but Michael Kramer's Lopen is soooo good
Ooof, I don't think I could do a 50 hour audiobook. I can just read so much faster! -Eric
@@17thShard 2x speed!

I've been waiting for this since last Friday! Thanks
The funniest thing is that "Hui" in Bulgarian means "dick" and "huio" is literally a way of addressing people. I had a lot of giggles when you were pronouncing it xDD
Totally unrelated to Dawnshard question but is Evgeni Bulgarian? Just curious if I pin pointed the accent right :D
Edit: I just heard the confirmation from him :D
P.s.: Evgeni, congrats on not laughing when discussing Huio's name pronounciation :D Honestly, it bugs me a little everytime I read it in my head.
The audio version came out yesterday and I am here today finally!!!
Dude no mention of the Burning God? I sad Sparkle.
Maybe Teft's third ideal was specifically worded around hatred because he based it on Kaladin's and then modified it to his own situation?
I think the more you go along with ideals, the more personal and less general they become, so much so that the first ideal is universal for all orders. The third ideal of the Windrunners seem to always be “accept to protect the hardest people to you.” In Kaladin, so entrenched in the “us versus them” mentality that was branded on him as a soldier, protecting those he hates was the hardest. For Teft, who hates himself with a passion, accepting that he deserved it was the hardest, so on and so on. Doesn’t seem to be always based on who you hate, just on the hardest for yourself to accept to protect.
Wait? Why don't we want everyone to be a radiant? Or at least a squire of some sort so they can use stormlight.
Cant believe this lopen dislike. I Am reminded that people are different than me but its surprising how much difference between us there is
I know I´m a year later but I would really know if Ian has some homebrew stuff from Roshar for DnD lol
I personally love THE Lopen
**spoilers**
I haven’t read RoW preview chapters. And when I saw Queen Navani my brain corrected it to Queen Jasnah and about half way through I was like, ‘Wait, Jasnah is queen of Alethkhar not Urithiru.’ And immediately facepalmed.
Literally just finished reading it..... Game changer
Cool to get more Evgeni lore
So the “luck Spren” for both the Larken and Chasm fiends are at oath gates. Could be natural Guardians of th oath gates
I thought the “luck spren” on the physical realm were what we call the mandras in Shadesmar
The only mention I could find about what Rock did with his shards was on 1228 (the last paragraph before the epilogue) is that he won them, and gave Oathbringer back to Dalinar "A debt repaid"
you guys have the link to the Brandon Sanderson impromptu q&a on reddit?
It's in the description! Dawnshard Annotations Reddit Q&A: wob.coppermind.net/events/444-dawnshard-annotations-reddit-qa/
I unironically want a Cremcast
Ian, have you read Liveship Traders by Robin Hobb, that's nautical fantasy.
Eric, one horneater lager coming up.
OMG You guys I am anticipating all of those things and I do not know what to do with myself. I am probably going to start with the first book that arrives, probably Rhythm of War, and wait for launch day to die down a little bit on GW2. In terms of Dawnshard I honestly loved it. Unlike Wayne, Lopen has always been funny or at least charming to me so I had no problem going into this and I appreciate his humor much more, since it's a mechanism that I myself use sometimes. And I actually quite enjoyed the beginning of this book, I love voyages so this was fun :). I was really excited to hear your take on it guys so I loved this episode and can't wait for the next on.
Aww... Who's that Cosmere Character is like the delicious caramel core in the chocolatey goodness that is the Shardcasts. Oh well. Still liked the discussion, y'all make the conversation both relevant AND enjoyable to listen to. Keep it up.
*secretly ships the Lopen and Rysn*
Excellent episode.
Why is every shardcast the 17th
I'm not quite sure what you mean. 17th Shard is the name of our website. Shardcast is our podcast, based off that name. -Eric
I don't know about you guys, but I'm shipping Rysn and Cord pretty hard.
I'm down with this. -Eric
I hadn’t thought of that but thats perfect!
Do sleepless do give you any afterthought about kandra/mistwraiths?
They do but WOB said they are not sleepless and are unrelated.
i've read the other books in spanish and this one in english and so i'm confued. what is the scouring? and the recreance?
The scouring is the destruction of Aimia. The Recreance is when the Radiants betrayed their oaths. I imagine it must be really tough switching languages there, for sure, since the terms are different. -Eric
WHAT?!?!?! Why don't yall like The Lopen?!
Recommendation for huios 3rd ideal, 'i will protect those who would harm themselves' and he lives it by telling lopen he's a bit of a dick. Or 'i will protect people, even if it hurts them'
I rly like that as a third ideal, I think that’d be a good ideal for a therapist
Are you going to add more details about Akinah to the map now?
Yay
i ship Rushu and Lopen
I....do....too..... o no
I ship Rushu with Huio more. Lopen hasn’t found his one true ship yet IMO.
Did anyone else see a relationship budding between Rushu and Lopin?
I would love to see that!
Ayy Grace said CordxRysn, so I'm not the only one! Ship name... Rysnaki'akilu?
No WTCC makes me sad :(
Sorry :( Our recording session ended up being seven hours, and I think you'll see in the next episode that we got loopy. -Eric
@@17thShard Ouch 7 hours! It was a good episode. Can't wait for pedenticast!!
I’ve been thinking Lopen and all Herdazians were based after the Italian culture, not Mexican.
Yaaayyyyyyy!
I could have an entire book with The Lopen. Kill off Shallan and replace her chapters with The Lopen.
I didn't really rate Dawnshard unfortunately, it did a lot of things right, but I felt the conclusion was so convenient and generally somewhat weak. The payoff, despite all the Cosmere info-drops, just didn't land for me.
I think that is a fair assessment, though I personally don't agree. I can definitely see how you feel that way for sure! -Eric
@@17thShard I still enjoyed it and am certainly excited to see what effects there will be from this in the future of the Cosmere, but yeah I just wish there had been more resistance, deliberation and struggle toward the end. It just felt too easy.
I knew about the hate for Lift, but my boy The Lopen. Am I the weirdo for liking these characters?
No, honestly I think we are in the minority :) Lots of people in the comments here love him, and I'm glad you like him! I really like Lift, actually. -Eric
