Invention and whimsy as siblings is just Dexter and Dee Dee
"WHIMSY! GET OUT OF MY LA-BOR-A-TOR-Y". Then whimsy does a ballet kick and something explodes.
I want that now😂
I NEED this now
Why would Mercy be worrying?
- well remember, at the end WoR the Stormfather sent a highstorm to collide with the Everstorm to magnify the destruction. And he thought this was a mercy. While the intent of mercy is always subjectively benevolent, the actions taken in the name of mercy will not always be agreeable.
Shorter: Mercy killing.
Also: Harmony was alive/human when Ruin was meddling with his world. And Spiritual Realm psychometry and Hoid's testimony alike would speak to Ruin's Vessel's kindness and generosity before, during, and after his Ascension. Knowing that someone has donned the mask of the personification of kindness and/or generosity would not be reassuring to him.
After all of the RAFOs over the years, this is where we FO
Also straight up hard theorizing that MERCY, mercy killed AMBITION after he was wounded by ODIUM
I think it was a little less direct. I think Ambition got the upper hand on Odium and was going to kill him, but Mercy convinced Ambition to show mercy on him, only for him to use that opportunity to destroy Ambition
Remember that the main fight happened on Threnody but Ambition's death was somewhere else. Maybe the initial battle (where Ambition showed mercy because of Mercy) happened on Threnody, then Odium's betrayal and slaughter of Ambition was somewhere else

Wonder who it’s from
I think Sazed is worried about Mercy because Mecy is unstable. Remember, Mercy was there when Odium and Ambition clashed. It may have had adverse effect on the Shard/Vessel.
Whimsy sounds like an all powerful Syl.
The sword Harmony talks about is Wax. At end if alloy of law miles tells wax he is just a sword. Sanderson said there are hints in that trilogy. And marsh said that wax is doing his brother's work. You have to assume thidakar and harmony work together as well.
I think a Whimsy Shardworld would be like Wonderland: scary and fun at the same time.
I imagine Beth’s play world from Rick & Morty season 3
Can I just say that Sazed/Harmony is awesome? I think his newness at being a vessel gives him a perspective that the other Shards lack, maybe because he's more in touch with his humanity. I mean the guy is practically paralyzed by his powers, and is still trying to help.
The other Shards are disinterested, but Sazed looks around and goes: "This Cosmere is a mess, Odium is a problem, and Thenody... that scares me." As to why Mercy wasn't mentioned in the Threnodite essay. Silverlight may not know about its involvement, but as a Shard Harmony has more insight.
Or probably Mercy hasn't created much of a problem in the region. Like there's an issue in the spiritual realm, but it might have manifested in totally different place in the physical realm.
Sazed seems like he might also be somewhat... neutered in his ability to act by his own nature as a eunuch. It fits into his character in a strange way.
Literally been waiting all day for this specific shardcast because I KNEW you guys would be too excited to wait.
True story.
VERY true. -Eric
Theory:
Shallan in her 50-60’s becomes a world Hopper, meets up with the Lady from Emperor’s Soul interlude. They decide to create the Ideal shadows of the Shard’s personalities. Basically, they design the soul of the shard that can best hold the power.
I'm convinced that the Sleepless come from Invention. Their whole thing is breeding and inventing new hordelings to serve specific purposes
Mercy provided the killing blow to Ambition. Odium probably left them “bleeding out” and Mercy saved them from an eternity of pain. To go along with the idea that Mercy was wounded by this conflict maybe their Intent has been twisted now. If they think Odium will continue with it’s plan, it would be a mercy to “save” those they can with a merciful end before Odium can get to them.
I like Mystery/Intrigue and Wisdom for the last 2 shards
Mercy could be like a "let me put them out of their misery" kinda of thing. And may be that's what Harmony is worried about
Talking about invention made me think of the Sleepless, and how they're always using selective breeding to innovate and do different things as the need arises
Could Sleepless be Invention's creations?
P.S. Whimsey's shard world is definitely kite magic
P.P.S. how are we still denying the "Scadrials are the ones above" theory? Brandon's reading from sixth of the dusk 2 showed them using allomancy to take off
The saying that "discretion is the better part of valor" makes me think that Valor could be the Shard that was trying to stay hidden and out of the way.
What if the persons on Inventions planet are hordelings? Each horde is created/invented for a purpose. If so that would make it MUCH cooler than chaos is implying...
Almost certain my neighbors heard me yelling while reading these epigraphs. SO EXCITING.
I could 100% see Mercy and Odium being allies. If the Vessel interprets the shattering of all other Shards as a mercy on mortals around the Cosmere...
My reading of the mercy, ambition, and odium fight was that mercy finished ambition off as a mercy killing. Granted I'm only reading it that way because Harmony was worried about her.
Reactions at 6:58:
"Invention."😀
"...Whimsy, Mercy, and Valor!" 🤯🤯🤯
Evgenis gun fingers when Harmony says "A... sword, you might say" really cracked me up :D
As much as I also love Dragonheart, it's a great movie if you accept its flaws 😂 Like I love it but it isn't perfect hahaha
Wisdom Shard name ideas: Insight, Intuition, Prudence.
Also love the Mercy held Ambition back idea.
Re Valor: perhaps Hoid was holding back on involving Valor in the battle against Odium as a contingency/next step in a grander plan? Perhaps recognizing that Valor would go ALL OUT (likely at the cost of many lives)?
The way Alyx described Sazed's feelings on taking up a Shard reminded me vividly of Mordin Solus's "had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong."
Also with that "sword that can both protect and kill" I kinda like the new vessel idea. I don't think it's gonna happen, but someone with that kind of disposition might be able to take up Ruin and Preservation as a different shard: Protection. A Shard willing/capable of killing to protect, or ruin to preserve.
And as for the name-dropped Shards, I have way too many thoughts buzzing to be coherent, other than I'm really looking forward to what kinds of magics they create!
9:33: "The rest of the letter was completely irrelevant after that drop."
Are you sure? Everyone talks about all the shards, but... OH WOW THE FORESHADOWING! Brandon really pulled a fast one on us here, distracting everyone with shard names but then quietly, subtly doing something no Letter has ever done before: throwing in something that turns out to be incredibly relevant to the book itself!
30:48: "Preservation wouldn't want things to change, and Sazed is not capable of making many changes"
Really not the same thing at all. Preservation *was* capable of acting, and actively worked to not only not make changes himself, but prevent other agents from accomplishing change.
36:14: "I don't know if Was is 'endgame goals' for Harmony..."
Everyone always pays so much attention to Wax, but have you noticed Wayne's arc? Seems likely to me that he's the enduring one and he's going to end up becoming the first kandra created by Harmony.
44:08: "That's Whimsy. 'I'm Ambiguity!'"
Kinda sounds like Autonomy to me...
1:26:00: "It's interesting, because [Harmony] says 'Mercy worries me,' then like two chapters later, he says 'the most worrying thing I discovered was the Spiritual Realm wound.' And I wonder if Mercy was wounded in some way."
The other interpretation of this is that Mercy was somehow the one who *caused* the Spiritual wound...
1:37:34: "It has been too long, in her estimation, since your last visit."
[Insert "wow someone actually likes him" joke here.}
Having just finished Part Two ... Raboniel is legitimately extremely merciful. Not nice, but merciful.
How do the Shards communicate? The same way the Oathpact can feel each other, but on a grander scale. The Shard-pact is powerfully in its connection
Crackpot theory: Odium was critically wounded in the battle with Ambition, and Mercy somehow saved the Shard, out of mercy of course, perhaps due to some sort of romantic relationship?
Soon as I saw the epigraph my first thought was "Did Mercy help so Ambition didn't suffer? Maybe twisted it mentally into an act of Mercy."
Invention creating life forms to suit a multitude of purposes? DID INVENTION MAKE THE SLEEPLESS? 47:30 @chaos
I think the fact that Odium called himself Passion and clashed with Ambition strange, you would think they would be aligned.
@17th Shard, at the 38:00 min, the discussion of Harmony, Kaladin does fit the bill of Protect, but he has lost the will to kill. The one person that protects by killing is Adolin Kholin, and coincidence or not, that epigraph is on Adolins chapter. Its plausible anyway, and we all expect Shallan to go world hopping.
Solid crew. I'm cracking up at the intros. Yall rock
Sazed is the emulsifier for Ruin and Preservation. The new Vessel/Shard combination is Harmony, but that doesn't mean that its harmonious
I’d like to add that Valor doesn’t mean seeking danger, it means being able to stand firmly against danger and be brave.
I imagine Whimsy as some kind of Q from Star Trek.
I'm totally in for Kelsier becoming Harmony's sword!
Same a lot of people hate him but I’m personally a big fan
Mercy does not mean Kindness. There are a lot of ways Intent can make that really scary; "I'm putting you out of your misery," "What I'm doing is better than the alternative," "I'm doing this for your own good," "I know what's best for you."
Honestly when I hear valor I feel valor is less like honor, and closer to devotion and ambition, a personal strength, being willing to die for your beliefs
Where honor is keeping promises, both spoken, and unspoken, valor is not giving up both on yourself and others, valor is self confidence.
Captain America is honor, thor is valor, iron man is ambition.
Low key can't wait for the Hoid backstory so we can meet the mother of Invention
Oh my god you guys made the joke in the video I'm not original
I think invention made the sleepless. Function before form, making the right tool for the right situation, and doing it step by step.
4 new shard names! SOOOO SPICEY!
Right!!!!!? -Eric
@@17thShard I haven't finished all of Part 2 yet but I HAD to read all of the epigraphs for pt2 after Invention was named! Will listen to this tomorrow during work because I will for sure be done it all by then.
Could Kaladin fit Harmony's description? Someone who can both protect and kill? Seems like a PERFECT fit to me.
I'm almost certain it's Wax. He even calls himself "Harmony's sword" in Shadows of Self. But Kaladin is 100% that description.
Why would Harmony be looking for Kaladin on Scadrial
Sounds like either Wax or Kelsier to me. I lean towards Kelsier because I think we're going to see Sazed's "sword" on Roshar in the back half of Stormlight & Wax as a character just does not strike me as the world-hopping type, whereas Kelsier's already out running around.
as a certain bastid from another series once said about someone: "[Invention] seems to me the sort of man that would make a good friend and a bad enemy"
Maybe instead of facing danger, Valor could work as something that inspires valor in people, so she plays the role of the antagonist in the worlds she is present in. Maybe she wants mortals to push against her, a bit like how the Fused enjoy when singers are passionate and oppose them with passion, and not just blindly accept orders.
I just finished part 2. What incredible timing.
So Harmony.... in my head I believe that it must be possible for Sazed to align their intents. The argument that the individual shards work against each other makes sense until you consider the once combined power of ALL the shards ie Adonalsium, and that didn't mean It was limited in power due to the conflux of all these varying intents, It had ALL the power.
I keep imagine a world runned by whimsey where the shard keeps kicking it's host and they have constant seasons where the shard takes slightly different names like. Insouciance, apathy, callous,
Mercy is not a human only trait. Every time you see an animal caring for another animals baby that’s a mercy.
I just finished the book today, since I got it late due to delivery problems and am really excited to finally watch all of you talk about it
I am reminded of Kuan Yin, the Chinese goddess of mercy.
Just got to the 47:00 minute mark, so I don't know if they bring it up later. But what if the Sleepless are from Invention's planet?
That seems like a decent idea.
I just made this same comment before I scrolled down to see this. I totally agree!!
A species that can engineer its own biological makeup to fit any purpose seems like the kind of lifeform an Invention Shard would create.
I like the idea, and upon rereading the relevant parts of Dawnshard, its left open. Frankly, we know absolutely nothing about Invention apart from that it is on communication blackout, so there's no way to know for certain. I feel like of the new Shards we have, most of them are very closely aligned with ones we already know. On the "alignment wheel", Valor would be right next to Honor, Invention right next to Cultivation, and I think Mercy would be right next to Odium. Mercy also could be the inverse of Honor.
The implications of these epigraphs after finishing the book are absolutely incredible. Hope that doesn't count as spoilers.
Sounds like Valor is pretty much Glory Girl from Worm as a god.
I’m so looking forward to all the shardcast content that’s coming! Sort of equally excited for this wave & Reading the actual book!
Kelsier spren! Using the bond to pull off heists!
Think hoid hides using the worms from sixth of the dusk. He clearly ate some himself and they gave him the protective mind shielding and maybe some other Talent
1:14:07 I would love like an Alice in Wonderland-type Cosmere book. That sounds like a whole lot of fun.
On that part of the epigraphs I went like "Wait, wait, wait" and then I stared at the wall for like 15 minutes :D
(I'm a little late to the party but) I'm SO glad you mentioned Sheogorath; it's what I immediately thought of.
Feather: "That's why his color is white, he's been holding on this whole time" 🔥😂😂😂
Whimsy would be awful at seeing the future, but would ruin everyone else's plans too. Think Electrum vs Atium lol.
I can't believe Brandon brought up Wax as a sword! Before ROW dropped, I was about to send in a Who's That Cosmere Character about Wax with the last clue clue being that he is a sword! 😠
Whimsy sounds a lot like Delirium/Delight of the Endless
I was thinking the same thing!
* Preservation would prevent changes. Harmony will not do that either.
* There is no reason to think that Harmony's sword needs to be a single person only. Sort of the Avengers - the Harmonizers, the Sword being Professor X.
* Invention's magic system - every spell is possible, but only once
* I would be afraid of Whimsy the Shard. Invention itself is beneficial. The Shard's planet's people are terrifying. Whimsy's people are laughing stock.
* Ambition and Mercy are not terribly compatible. Mercy is even more opposed to Honor (I will kill you if I said that I will kill you) and Cultivation (If you do not grow, we need to weed.) . "We killed you." Attacking a prison to spring all the inmates is arguably mercy..
* Honor would surrender if he sees no chance of winning, as he owes it to his soldiers. Valor fights to the last bullet and then bites the enemy to death if need be. Valor has no problem robbing a bank against the rules and promises, as long as you do not sneak in.
* Valor is a Shard and likely one of the original 16. She knows what is going on on Roshar.
* Sazed could make a few thousand beads of Lerasium and send an army.
* Shards are based on natural and psychological phenomena. There really should be a Shard of "Cautiion" or even "Fear"
I am guessing the so called "Wisdom" shard is something like prudence or caution like you said.
Would sit well next to the ones like Ambition and Whimsy,w hich probably relate to the same Dawnshard.
at 36:00 You say that his arc is to be a good senator in Elendel, but his arc (when simplified) is to give up the thing he wants to do in order to do more good; to save more people. If Harmony came to him and said, "you have to abandon the people of Elendel to try and save the UNIVERSE." Surely that would fit in Wax's arc.
Do we know that Threnody is not also, somehow, at least two Realms smushed together without creating a perpendicularity? Like, maybe the fight between Shards near there, which took place in all three Realms, caused a compression between them in the area. And that would be why Threnody is so weird and has cognitive shadows which can directly interact with the material world despite lacking bodies - because the worlds are not actually as separate as they normally woumd be.
Mercy could manifest in a mercy kill. Like, if life is suffering, then the merciful thing is to eradicate it as swiftly, efficiently, and painlessly as possible. This could have started as coups de grâce and euthanasia, and then spiralled out of control from there. If the fact that people cannot keep their word is what drove Honor into madness, then why would quotidian suffering not do the same to Mercy?
Eric and Ben's concept of Whimsy sounds a lot like the demigod Zagyg from the World of Greyhawk. He is the crazy god of humor, unpredictability, and arcane knowledge.
Thank you guys for this! I'm new to 17th Shard & listening to this podcast, but I'm loving it! Rhythm of War was so good.
I really hope Whimsy is the Shard behind Shard Magic.
Also Sazed could ruin, like he did at the battle against the Kolos. But his whole life was preserving Religions and knowledge as it had been
I think his inability to act comes from being more in tune with preservation and less in tune with ruin and he is now looking for a "sword" who is more ruinous... ie. Wax, possibly Kaladin!
Marsh is still alive. He's perfect to use as a Ruinous champion.
Wax will clearly be Batman. Preservation by day and Ruin by night. :-P
You wake up one day and it's raining cats and dogs.
That one is a good one. LOL
I was just thinking about the Shades on Threnody. Could it be that they exist because of Ambitions splintered investiture somehow and the way they interact with their surroundings has to do with bits of Odium and Mercy that stayed behind?
They do get red eyes and become incredibly hostile/murderous when they smell blood. Fighting draws their attention but if nothing of that happens they just go their own way.
I think Mercy or Whimsy are or will at some point be working with Odium
Mercy might be the kinda "I´ll kill you all to spare you the pain of living" kinda Mercy
and Whimsy I just find terrifying in general. Sounds like a Fae creature. Not ill intended but doesn´t know the difference from changing your soap with a raw peeled potato sort of prank from an "oops murdered your entire family in front of your eyes" kind of prank. And Odium might be able to weaponize that.
Like "Hey Whimsy you know what would be fucking hilarious? If you were to free me from the Rosharan system"
Honor is about keeping your word, fulfilling an agreement and doing what is right. It's necessarily about justice and fairness, which are supposed to be by-products or emergent properties of being honorable. Honor is similar to Dominion which both seek to control, but Dominion would probably disregard your opinion and just establish dominance, whereas Honor would rather make a mutual agreement.
Valor is about bravery, courage and determination especially in the face of danger or misfortune. It's basically Taln. Valor is something internal to you that compels you to act similar how a whim or an ambition would.
Has anyone considered the way Threnody is damaged? Violence is a trigger and death can be 'avoided' - maybe Mercy warped the natural cycle...
It seems like an attempt to stop violence and death that went very wrong due to the Shards fighting.
And I just got to @1:31:45 where they talk about it.
Probably my most serious comment: Brandon LOVES using the "imperfect narrator" writing tool. He has talked about it on writing excuses. He used it with Shallan at the beginning of WoR for the reveal at the end of the book. He LOVES using characters that feel or sound omniscient to throw us off his actual goals and story twists. That being said, could Harmony be lying in any of this? Is he testing Hoid's knowledge by saying Mercy was there when she actually wasn't? Did Harmony pick a fake shard name to test Hoid?
Food for thought I guess. Thanks for the videos!
Whimsy sounds quite interesting to me. Coz there was WOB a some time ago that he had given up on using Levity as a name. And Levity and Whimsy are quite similar imo.
1:23:00 ish, Mercy is compassion, Odium is passion. Opposites in regards to compassion for others is external emotion, passions being internal emotions. Opposite shards that could potentially combine? I dont know if that would make Harmony fearful though. Just a hot take.
I just about exploded reading the epigraphs, because my only two friends who know anything about the cosmere wont read it for a few weeks!!!!
In Greek Mithology the most terrifying deities were Furies, godesses of revenge which people called "Mercifull ones".
It's interesting that you mentioned the Heralds because Harmony delegating a "sword" sounds an awful lot like the Heralds
Also the Taravangian Interlude give a few more clues or builds upon the Sja-Anat interlude.
I absolutely LOVE this debate you guys are having here. I’m just at around the 30minute mark where you guys discuss how Sazed is able to reconcile (or not!) the two Shards of Ruin and Preservation and I keep thinking, isn’t the whole intention of Hoid’s actions throughout the Cosmere not just to keep Odium at bay, but also a matter of eventually trying to reforge the power of Adonalsium? If so, isn’t the whole crux of doing that the fact that many of the Shards oppose one another and the conflict of being able to accomplish that reforging? I might be wrong, but isn’t Hoid, after being part of the events at the Shattering, and apparently realizing the grave mistake of doing so in that very moment (and thus deciding not to take up one of the Shards) a testament to his ambitions of reforging what once was? And maybe even being willing to take up that immense responsibility himself? Not for the power of bearing Adonalsium, but for repayment for his involvements in the events of the Shattering in the first place? What else would keep him motivated to be so involved in the Cosmere over the Millenia? I’m really just an avid reader and would never consider myself a “mega-fan” (even though I love the Cosmere stories to bits), but am I so wrong in thinking that Sazed’s struggle of reconciliating the two powers he holds is somewhat at the core of the conflicts that are to come in the later books?
I’m just inclined to think that Hoid’s actual intentions are much more than just being an intrepid Worldhopper forging random CONNECTIONS for simple shits and giggles. I would like to believe that he does have an agenda spanning a much greater arc than simply keeping Odium bound to the Rosharan system.
Also, the sword that kills and protects sounds very much like Nightblood. A little UN-directed one might say, but it definitely embodies the agenda of doing both. Not as a person of course, but as condensed Investiture.
Moving on, it seems that at least one of the Shards inhabits a sun, not a planet (“White Sands”comes to mind) and the fact that Brandon has sort of confirmed in one of the book signing sessions that not all Shards might have taken up “residence” anywhere at all points to Whimsy for me. As in, Whimsy couldn’t decide exactly what to go for and is just “floating around” in a sense.
So you guys talked a lot about the Ambition Mercy Odium clash. But you missed a potential option that I had a theory on regarding why Harmony was so worried about Mercy. All you speculation regarded Ambition & Mercy VS Odium. But what if the fight was Ambition VS Mercy & Odium. We know Ambition clashes with Odium bear Threnody but that the final blow wasn’t in that system. What if Mercy & Odium beat Ambition and then Mercy let Ambition leave. Later Odium tracked Ambition down and destroyed it
I'm re reading this for the first time since it dropped.... This was hard!
The idea about Mercy trying to stop the fight and getting caught up in it makes sense but Ambition's death didn't happen all that long after the Shattering. I doubt it would have been long enough for the Intent to fully take over the vessel of Mercy, unless she was already a merciful person which is possible but its still an assumption.
Invention's natural force idea: instead of "evolution", the natural force that it symbolizes is specifically the random mutations that occur that get selected for and against in the evolutionary process.
Invention implies deliberate action to create something new, not randomness.
I was thinking something along these lines, and that it might take both Invention and Cultivation for evolution to take place.
@@luckat7927 But Rosharan ecology is stated to have evolved to the way it is now. Not everything is the result of a Shard's influence .
@@joshuafischer684 I didn't mean to imply that it would take Shardic influence for evolution to take place. I meant that the intent of Invention might be more narrow than full evolution would require. It might only be the initial changes in the evolution process, and if Shards were to cause an evolution process to take place Cultivation would be required as well for the pruning part. That wasn't meant to negate any evolution that takes place independent of the shards.
Just finished part two, couldn’t wait to hear all of y’all’s thoughts before continuing 😂
Maybe Invention's magic system is something like Nen from "Hunter x Hunter": each person has to design how to use this invenstiture, following some common rules and/or using some basic "ingredients".
About Whimsy: maybe it's the shard not invested in any specific planet. Maybe W keep travelling around the cosmere, and sometimes visit a shardworld investing it in random ways, for fun.
Imagine: you are a pacific misting on Scadrial, you can burn steel, everything is fine, then SBAM, Whimsy touches you and now you can turn metal into bacon. For no specific reason.
So we know that ambition did not die in the Threnody system... We know that Mercy was involved in the battle.... When I creature is hurt beyond the ability to heal, and you don't want them to suffer, you give them a MERCIFUL death. I think this is why Mercy worries Harmony, because ending a suffering life can be a small mercy..
I think the the thing that people are missing with Invention is not wondering where it is or what it is doing. Rather it is where it is not.
On Roahar it has been 4500 years since Aharietiam. And they have barely progressed. Harmony laments that Scadrial is far behind on a technological level.
His absence is felt
Not sure where you get the idea Roshar hasn't progressed - the whole point to Taln holding out as long as he did is that society was finally able to advance. They were fighting with sticks and stones during the last desolation; fabrial technology is far beyond what the Heralds ever experienced. Harmony laments Scadrial is behind where he thinks they should be; Khriss is amazed at how far they advanced on their own.
@@ghjong001 This is just my opinion on the "Technology" Shard and how it plays into the Cosmere.
For Roshar I did not say, "hasn't" progressed I said "barely" progressed. Again it has been 4500 years since Aharietiam. In my understanding may of the breakthroughs in fabrial tech are all recent inventions.
Kriss is a mortal, Harmony is a Shard, in my opinion Harmony has a better grasp on where they 'should' be
There are many reasons why this could be happening, the Unmade's influence on Roshar, Autonomy's influence on Scadrial, to name a few. It was just a crazy idea that I had when I found out that Technology was a Shard. If I ever get a chance to ask Brandon I will.
I think Remembrance can be a good name for a Shard
Invention would seem like the kind of shard to create a planet of Androids powered by Investiture.
I'd be curious to see y'all discuss whether the original vessels capacity contributed to their marriage between the shard's intent and themselves vs there idea that the shards they ended up receiving were most aligned to their personalities to begin with.🤔
Invention probably has all magic locked behind diferent types of fabrials that you have to create yourself.
Ambition might have something like oaths but instead goals, when you complete the goal you lose the abilities.
Maybe valor gives her kights more abilities when they face stronger oponents than themselves.
Whimsy might have a planet where everything runs on rng.
Mercy idk maybe she has an afterlife in shadesmar for all her people and you can bond your ancestors
The wisdom shard is probably something like prudence or something related to being careful and cautious then it would make sense that they would think survival is the best/only thing to do and then revising that opinion

INVENTION + AIMIANS.
Invention planet is either Aimian homeworld or Aimians flourish there (Aimians love spaceships anyway, amiright?)
Aimians intentionally "invent" (breed) new body functions for themselves. Like the "clockwork city" concept but less morbid. And it's got that aspect of "natural/evolution" that you were looking for.
Hmmmm... this is very much worth considering. Interesting idea. -Eric
