This is Phineas Gage, he was a railroad worker. They would drive these rods down a hole with gunpowder and then detonate the gunpowder, to loosen hard rock. The rod is supposed to seal the hole, so the rock around gets pulverized. The day he was doing it, he forgot an essential step. Usually they pour the gunpowder and then some sand on top, before they put the iron rod in. He forgot to pour the sand in and when he pushed the rod down the hole, the iron made a spark and ignited the gunpowder. The explosion shot the rod upwards through his skull.
Phineas P. Gage is a famous patient in neuroscience history. On September 13, 1848, Gage was directing a workgroup preparing the bed of the Rutland & Burlington Railroad when the tamping iron he was using to pack explosive powder into a hole detonated. This is Phineas Gage, he was a railroad worker. They would drive these rods down a hole with gunpowder and then detonate the gunpowder, to loosen hard rock. The rod is supposed to seal the hole, so the rock around gets pulverized.
The day he was doing it, he forgot an essential step. Usually they pour the gunpowder and then some sand on top, before they put the iron rod in. He forgot to pour the sand in and when he pushed the rod down the hole, the iron made a spark and ignited the gunpowder. The explosion shot the rod upwards through his skull.

It was going by very fast and went right towards his brain somehow missing the right eye. He managed to survive and he started doing other things before dying 12 years later and the rod supposedly wasn't responsible for his death.
