August 2, 1982, marked the beginning of what was supposed to be a blissful family camping getaway for the Johnson and Bentley families. Little did they know, it would be their final family trip, and their idyllic retreat would take a dark and sadistic turn thanks to one twisted individual fixated on two young girls…

Last summer my boyfriend and I both went camping in the driftless area of Wisconsin. We camp often but this was the first time we had a bad experience because of a person. It was close to 1am and the moon was bright that night, so I was able to see through the tent a little. I woke up to the sound of a man in boots walking very slowly through our campsite. He walked straight up to our tent, and his feet were barely 2 feet away from where my head was. And he just stood there staring at the tent for the longest 5 minutes I think I’ve ever experienced. He then slowly walked away and I had to shake my boyfriend awake and whisper to him that a man came out of the woods and stood right at our tent. He got up and went outside with bear spray and a flashlight and went in the direction of where the man had came from/left, and when he came back he told me “are you sure he came from that direction? The bluff is over there and it’s a 30ft drop.” Easily the most scared I’ve ever been while camping. 😅
Josh, you and Kendall could always change up one room a year, to keep it changing and it doesn't get stale being in the same home.
That's true
that's a solid idea
That's what I do, 😂 but like every 3-4 months
I don't agree..why change..there's so much change in the world. Feels like home, home should stay the same. ❤
@laurapage1132 You must be trauma free 🤣🤣 good for you but some of us need need it to feel at home. Plus what about all that dust where your furniture is 🤔 change is clean
As a canadian, I am constantly dissappointed by our legal system.
Same
100% especially with sa, it's terrible!
Same here. At least it isn't as bad as the UK or Australia tho.
What are some other issues with Canada that you don’t like? Also can you elaborate on the legal system there? Everybody in the US is convinced that Canada is the perfect place to live and I am just honestly curious.
@@tiaslays255 our current prime minister is essentially a child with an ant farm. Health care here is free, but useless. Prisons are holes in the ground and the court system seems to care more for the offenders than the victims and families. Canada is no where near a perfect place to live. We do have some strict gun laws which does make some places feel safer I suppose.
You guys have the most calming and relaxing voices, regardless of the horrors you talk about I still feel so calm and relaxed listening to you both.
Fr lol
Thanks guys for covering this case; Canada has the same laws as the UK they both need changing for harsher sentencing, this Monster should never be let out after killing six people in cold blood, plus how many other crimes like this did he commit?
30:08 ❤
Canada is crazy. The cannibal bus guy! He didn't do any time! He went to a mental facility and was released super early.
That's because he was possessed by a wendigo
Yh right
Comparing this case in regards to sentencing to the guy on the grey hound is like comparing apples to oranges
@@annikajohansson9171😂
Justice system everywhere is crazy. There's always some bs that makes no sense lol
It's my favorite boys in the Lights Out hood! Ya know, I really love having Austin up there with you Josh.. Even the guy hanging out in the dark corner is pretty dope. Y'all are crushing it. I appreciate each one of you 😉😊🖤💀
If you are a pedo, a sex offender, a murder, etc, you should NEVER be allowed to be released for parole EVER. That makes absolutely no sense to me that, that is even a possibility and that the community has to constantly be retraumatized over and over again or live in fear of him getting out.
I feel like the detectives were like, “I really need a vacation, let’s ’roadtrip’ across the country for this one. We can interview the town when we get back” 😂
😂
I’m with Austin’s mom, give me a cute cabin! No tents for this glamper 🏡🏕️
That's not camping then.

1:03 I, too, am from Michigan. And I will continue to complain about it.
I'm a little bit south of you in PA and I also am sick of cold and rain/snow/gloom. It is sunny today but I know 7 days of rain are coming here. I am ready for summer.
I am Michigan adjacent and yes.....we are still in the depths of wintry shadow and dreariness.
Now we're all moving from Florida to Tennessee because Florida is getting too expensive. Heh
@@alix4434I’ve noticed a BUNCH of people from the north and colder states moving to TN.
@@tiaslays255 lots of people from California too...and they're bringing HOAs along with them
"They definitely do things a bit differently in Canada..." As a Canadian, and someone who lives in BC, our justice system is not very just. Obviously, some people get the most ridiculously lenient sentences. But there are other things that our system does in underhanded ways in order to keep people detained for long times. For example: people can easily be thrown in mental institutions for little reason. There is no sense to be made here. Mostly a lot of corruption.
No offense to the old "broducer," but I think Austin is a great addition to the podcast! Plus he's a cutie 😂
Agree. His tone is amazing and pairs really well with Josh's. Broducers wasn't nearly as soothing.
Can’t wait to see what you guys do outside the studio on location. You can call it LIGHTS OUT IN THE WILD 😂
This is such a side note, I’m a vet tech 😭😭 but have u tested tucker for hyperthyroidism? GI issues sometimes come hand in hand with hyperthyroidism. Biggest symptom of hyperthyroidism is insane appetite but still dropping weight. Now if ur seeing increased drinking with those symptoms then test for diabetes! But I hope he’s okay😭🖤
Good lookin out for real ❤
This crime happened a couple of months before I was born and its crazy to imagine this dude has been in prison pretty much for as long as I have been alive.
Thank goodness 🙏🏾 it's Friday. Lights Out. The best part of my Friday. Thank guys for all your hard work. 🧡🧡🧡⚘️⚘️⚘️🫶🏽✌🏾
The music in the background is really throwing me off. Having my headphones in I can hear it a lot and it’s distracting especially because of how upbeat it is. Just some food for thought. Love you guys and all of Mile Higher Media❤️
I do agree with this. Love the podcast though.
Really enjoy the way Austin speaks
I absolutely love this channel! It is one of the most underrated channels on CZcams! You guys deserve 10 million+ subscribers!
Much love from northern Indiana ❤️
They said that the suspects spoke French, maybe that’s why they drove to Montreal?
I love camping! I was always scared of animals or maybe bigfoot. I live in Washington State so we have lots of forests and Bigfoot sightings among other things. We also get snow in may sometimes!
Nice! Glad to see Tom on the show!!
Who?
@@aleksandralempart8305Tom
I don't remember hearing about this case but was surprised to hear Windsor mentioned. I was born and raised here in Windsor and have raised my own family here. I laughed when you mentioned the Windsor hum lol. I have had a murder in my own family that was coined by cops as the worst massacre in Windsor history and so I've always been interested in true crime stories after my Aunt was murdered when I was 7 years old in the 70s
Windsor UK?
@@aleksandralempart8305 no, Windsor, Ontario, Canada
Windsor, Ontario Canada :) @@aleksandralempart8305

David should never be Aloud back into society. He will do this again
Josh, you should always be heavily strapped while camping!! But yea i agree i dont think about psychopaths running around the woods.. but wild animals yes. Both solid reasons to carry.
I live in BC and didn't know this case. Wild. Our justice system is a joke. People who should be severely punished are often paroled, which is scary. We also have a lot of negligence and corruption in our RCMP and other police institutions that the US has. I'm glad this guy is still in prison.
Love the chairs guys, but why not just get some that are actually comfortable? 😂
I'm sure the reason they made the trip to Montreal is that the guys were reported to have French accents.
In the US, we offer certain inmates that qualify what's called a Furlough. That's guarded leave for a funeral.
Wish this episode had chapters
Yay!! Just in time!! I needed something to watch while i workout!! Absolutely love all of your guy's podcasts! I watch every single one religiously! 😅🖤
Watching this from Canada! Love you guys and your wife’s podcast 👌🏼
Austin, did you say 'absofruitley' at 21:42 ❤ loving the office quote, I say it too 😂
I heard , absolutely
Austin said absolutely, but Josh said the word for
As soon as you said Canada 😂😂hopefully I’ll want to continue camping after this ep. Lol
I'm only at the start where you said where this case happened... and im already screaming "WHAT?!" because thats very close to me... we have done several hikes in this park. That's terrifying. More terrifying that I had no idea!
As someone that lives in Kelowna I've never heard of this case but I'm glad British Columbia is getting the attention it deserves for how beautiful it is, although Canada's legal system is quite poor for putting criminals away.
Campgrounds that are busier can be better when you have kids. Like a KOA type of camp. Getting out i to the middle of nature is amazing, but it can be difficult with young kids
What’s KOA ? Lol
Wow it’s so crazy seeing a case so close to home! I live in a small town 40 minutes away from wells gray park and visit all the time, I’m so surprised I’ve never heard about this.. what a sick man my heart breaks for those poor girls 💔
Wow I’m so excited someone finally covered this case. I grew up in Clearwater and I have watched so many true crime episodes and podcasts and all the things and this is the first time I’m hearing it covered. It happened when my dad was a kid and he said it was such a scary time knowing some crazy was on the loose.
Love your videos and yes, moving is the absolute worst! I’m literally moving out of state tomorrow and what a headache it is!!
Image doing the pod from comfy "library" wing chairs, fellas... No reason to suffer in those gothic revival beasties when you could be (and look) comfy and >cozy
Couple things I want to mention as someone who was a)born and raised in Windsor Ontario and b)currently lives near Clearwater
1) I would imagine the police brought their replica vehicle to Montréal due to the tip you mentioned that the individuals were speaking French.
2) A burning car would not have been noticed in the woods out there, that land is expansive miles of wilderness and like you said the family was off the beaten path.
3) the Windsor hum mystery was finally solved during Covid. A specific factory was shut down and the hum stopped.
Great episode!
I have heard this story but yours was incredible thoughtful and very informative thank you.
Come to Georgia if you're sick of the snow. Today it's supposed to be 76 and it's NOT summer time yet and it's not even April yet. Happy Easter
Why do they even let him have parole hearings he was given life and he is dangerous .Total rubbish justice system.Throw away the key and forget about him.
Last summer I went camping solo for the first time and as soon as the sun went down I started getting hella anxiety and slept in my car lmao I’ve camped with my family every year since I was a kid. But that fear I felt made me realize I need to come with something to defend myself beyond the fire poker 😅this video just validated that fear I felt
Thank you for another podcast ❤ you’re amazing, guys 👍🏼
i live in a small town if that many people knew of him so did the cops
Can't wait for your project ❤
I'm watching this as I'm camping, fortunately I have 5G 😂😂😂
I’m Canadian and I’ve never heard this story!!! Thank you guys
Yayy I needed something to watch 🥳❤️
I'm from Prince George, it's wild to hear about this story from you guys! Thank you for featuring this story.
Can you guys get some orthopedic cushions 😅 all that matters visually is the top of the chairs
Idk if y’all changed up how this video was formatted or edited but loved it!
I'm ready for the Lights Out comedy show.🤣
I would help my brother with anything he asked me for
I'm from Kelowna (born and raised) and we have a pool here called Johnson Bentley. I just learned a couple years ago about this case (as it was before my time) and how the pool was named after the Johnsons and the bentleys. I learned about the cause because unfortunately his parol was coming up and everyone was petitioning the parol board to not let him out. I then asked my mom if our pool was named after the families and she told me all about the case and how tragic and scary it was at the time.
Me watching this, mere days away from a three night tent camping trip in the woods.
😮
I havnt started watching this yet 😮 I camp at Wells Gray every summer. I’m kind of scared to watch/listen. It’s a beautiful park with some amazing erupting volcanic activity, eddies, hiking trails, water fails etc. I’m not sure I want to ruin it 😵
Yikes. I did NOT like looking at the pics of that David guy… He just looks evil.
Also, Hi Tom!
Oh nooo... Josh, I'm so sorry about your baby, Tucker being ill. 😢 That's so sad. I know how it is when your babies get sick. I hope he feels better and gets his tummy issues under control. 🩵🐈🐾
Driving to Montreal was probably because of the French speaking aspect. Montreal/Quebec is where most of the French speaking (at least full time French speaking) people live
TGIF! Going to listen on my lunch now, thank you. Feel better Danny! Welcome Tom. 🖤
I love glamping (camping but with a rv or even a tent but I have an ac unit that goes with me that's portable and I use an air mattress, ac is a must tho because I'm in good old Florida (sorry for you guys with the snow)
the cheerful music is so out of place and odd... what's going on
It’s so annoying I can’t watch 🤣
It’s like weird porno music
I’m from kamloops and the way my head snapped to look at the phone when you said our name, my grandmother remembers this guy from around town!
I’m from a hour where Austin is from in Michigan! I think it’s awesome to hear ppl talk about Michigan!!
Watching ALL of you eps
I’m by myself in the office working today. This is perfect timing to get some time passed by!!
I am loving Lights out!! 👏🏻❤️
You started talking about your cat right as I had a moment of heavy grief over my cat who died of lymphoma in October. Not to scare you but it still could be early stage lymphoma. If it gets worse, get a scope and get him on the cancer meds.
Whoohooo love y’all!
This is the town I grew up and live in. There are rumours of certain locals that are believed to be have been involved and assisted David. So sick.
27:47 I would think that they thought the murderer had left the area and was traveling with the truck and camper because their first tip was that it had been spotted in Saskatchewan with two French speaking men. Also got a bit of a giggle at Austin's pronunciation of Saskatchewan lol.
Edit: I think that most of Davids story was some sick fantasy he wanted to live. I also think that he had help at least after the actual killings, with moving the bodies and vehicles, and that it was likely his brother that helped him.
I would much rather just hear your voices than music in the background too. I do like the music sometimes like when the story starts getting creepy and you play music for affect but the music just constantly playing while you talk is loud and distracting
It is beyond cruel that the Canadian justice system puts the family through that every two years. It seems like their system favors the rights of criminals over anyone else.
I lived in Prince George when this happened. It was crazy case, believe a lot of incompetence and shady police. Sadly nothing has changed with Canadian police.
Hello from Edmonton Alberta cold here still snow. British Columbia is beautiful have camped in BC many times. Love listening to you guys ❤
Wisconsin, USA it was 10°F here just a week ago and snow! I'm ready for the 3 months of warm weather we get a year!
I love the March snow! ❄️☃️💜
Growing up in the 80's in BC Canada was a strange and scary time, tbh. I know this story well as I grew up in Kelowna, BC and was around the same age as these young girls. This was a news story night after night.
Have an amazing Easter you guys! However you may celebrate😊Great work guys, amazing episode!-Get well Daniel and toilet😂
Oh😮

If you think Michigan is bad, come to Buffalo NY! 😂 yeeeeah… it was a high of 35 today. Happy spring 🥲
I live in Utah so I feel you on the sick of snow 😢
The weather in Colorado sounds a lot like the weather in Scotland 😂😂🏴
I’m from Colorado! I lived there my whole 37 years and just moved for law school to Virginia. I miss the snow so bad!
Omg we used to go to Barkerville which is in wells gray park. Much history many ghostt sightings..also gold..I just thought stories were alot of b.s. hearing this makes me think differently...I know some stories are real..but I thoiught these were very old stories
I find the background music really distracting and it broke the immersion... Sorry!
Agreed!
It's been dark gray and raining with crazy wind in Massachusetts for a month! Desperate for some sunshine!
Yaaaass! Sitcom hahaha I'd tune in for sure 😂😂😂
Definitely wouldn’t want to be the officer that would be escorting him. I wouldn’t be able to relax knowing he was out and beside me. No thank you. Keep him in prison. He killed four adults because he wanted one teenager and barely a teenager and he killed her once he got tired of her.
Such a sad story. It was just a normal family going out for the weekend.
The purpose of driving across country is they were speaking French which is dominant in the Quebec region of Canada. 1 road that goes that whole way. The transcanadian highway.
watching this from kelowna 🫣 alone in my apartment pray for me
Great episode! Will y;all do Gilles De Rais??
I'm in Ontario, Canada, and it's bright and sunny over here 😅 no more snow!
Wisconsin, USA it was 10°F here just a week ago and plenty of snow!
Northern Ontario is buried in snow.. it’s also a balmy -18 currently..
