Sarra Gilbert believes her mother is an "evil god." She then stabs her 227 times, bludgeons her with a fire extinguisher, and tries to decapitate her. After a plea of not guilt by reason of insanity, the jury has to decide: was this gruesome parricide brought on by a life of abuse, drugs, and severe mental illnesses? Or is Sarra Gilbert, deep down, a cold-blooded killer looking for revenge?

My mom went missing when I was 16. Committed suicide. Her body was missing for an entire year before we found her. Its agonizing. The not-knowing eats away at you. Because even if you think you know what happened, you don't actually know. The wondering if you did something wrong and they had just left, or the different scenarios that you create in your head. I don't even have the right words to explain what a tormenting feeling it is. Thank you Josh and Austin (and the entire Lights Out/Mile Higher team) for telling the stories of people who are lost so their families may have answers. Because the worst part is just, not knowing.
Also thanks for giving me a video when I am home sick.

  • @haileyranson8255

If sex work was legalised, it means the workers could actually go to the police for help when they are assaulted or a victim of crime because of their line of work. They'd have access to more support and would hopefully have safer outcomes mostly. It would mean that the clients would be aware of the repercussions and consequences of victimizing sex workers and would on the most part be deterred. Just like everyone is deterred from any crime; burglary, assault, rape, theft, DUI etc....
I know there will be lots of people who will have the opinion that it won't stop all clients from criminal behaviour - nothing ever does! No matter what we're talking about, there will always be a minority group of people who commit crimes and nothing can deter them. That's just life unfortunately. At least legalising sex work would give sex workers far more protection. I feel like it would start to remove the stigma and prejudices attached to it to given time.
Sex workers will always exist because there is always a demand for it. That's the cold, hard truth. Instead of leaving it in the shadows and trying to pretend we don't see it, we could be accepting its a normal part of human activity and putting our resources and effort into things that matter more. As long as no one is being hurt or having their lives negatively impacted on a certain level I don't understand the problem. Everyone who opposes it on a moral level has to ask themselves what is actually worse. Someone selling a service that they have access to in order to feed their kids and keep a roof over their heads or letting them starve and have nothing because 'sex work is a sin'. If you're bringing God into the equation, I truly believe God would forgive those who 'sin' in this way because their quality of life and welfare is far more important to Him.
Complaining about sex workers is a clever way that those in power mask and avoid the real issue at hand: with the amount of wealth and resources in the world, nobody should be forced to sell themselves so they don't starve. That's the real issue in my opinion!!

I find it really understandable how Sarra could end up in such a horrible mental state after such traumatic events happened to her and her family. Obviously, it doesn't mean murder is okay, but I genuinely believe she acted as she did because of mental illness (and honestly, the people who believe she was "faking it" are ableist af and show a lack of understanding of mental health issues... yes, doctors included. unfortunately, a lot of doctors hold deep-seated biases against the "scarier" mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or personality disorders and are more likely to demonize people who suffer from them; the "tests" can also be strongly affected by the practitioners' bias). Also, you mentioned how it's sad that she wasn't taking the meds that were prescribed to her, but I do want to note just how difficult it can be with many mental health conditions to find medication that actually helps. A lot of times, it isn't right for your particular brain chemistry, and sometimes can even make things worse. Sarra's could have been one such case.
Either way, I feel like she should have received better mental health help and support, especially in the wake of what happened to Shannan. It's mentioned that it seemed like she was "keeping it together" for a while, but there comes a time when you can't repress the trauma and pain anymore, and the resulting breakdown can sometimes be worse than if you were just allowed to get the feelings out when it happened. While you mention her relatives framing her as "manipulative," that's unfortunately a term that gets thrown around toward a lot of mentally ill people whenever they show symptoms, even if they aren't trying to be manipulative, so I kinda take it with a grain of salt. Regardless, I feel so bad for everything that happened to this poor family (especially the young son).
I also want to note that most people with schizophrenia are not violent. Like with most mental illnesses, the majority of people who have it aren't dangerous, and in fact, mentally ill people are more likely to be victims rather than perpetrators of abuse. For example, my closest friend has schizophrenia and is one of the kindest and most intelligent people I've ever met. (She can't even kill a bug, lmao) While cases like this are incredibly tragic, they're also far from the norm.

For what it’s worth, in the rural areas here, specifically, but thru the entire state, mental health services are severely lacking. Which is pretty terrible considering there is also a high population of people here who are in poverty as well (again, speaking for the rural areas). Plus the weather here is pretty rough. So factor all that together, and here we are :(

If she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and sometimes it got worse, it's probably because she wasn't taking her medications. Some people with mental illness will choose not to take their meds. I'm not victim blaming but if I had a kid with schizophrenia, you'd best bet I'd be on top, making sure that they were taking their meds.

  • @kijanasik2908

This case is really really difficult for me and I go back and forth on what I believe. First of all Sarah definitely had so much trauma in her life, way beyond the majority of us can even fathom so I don’t see how any of us can judge her or even put ourselves in her mindset. Also, what gets me is that she stabbed her Mother 227 times. That takes SO much force, rage, strength and energy. Most stabbings even in the most extreme circumstances don’t go beyond between 30 and 50 and that even takes a lot of effort. Anyways, really the only reason that I have for thinking that she could possibly have been exaggerating her mental illness is that I don’t know her and so obviously I can’t say for certain. Either way I truly wish this family the best and I hope that the two sisters are able to get through this by being there for each other and with the love of their family and friends.

I've been curious about it myself, I've looked it up before but just a quick search says the reason prostitution is illegal is apparently due to a possible rise in crime, such as assault, abuse, and r**e, be it from pimps or clients, as well as a rise in sex trafficking (apparently in countries where sex work was legal) and human trafficking is already bad enough. I think it would still be an issue even if the government did try to regulate it somehow.
