Sarra Gilbert believes her mother is an "evil god." She then stabs her 227 times, bludgeons her with a fire extinguisher, and tries to decapitate her. After a plea of not guilt by reason of insanity, the jury has to decide: was this gruesome parricide brought on by a life of abuse, drugs, and severe mental illnesses? Or is Sarra Gilbert, deep down, a cold-blooded killer looking for revenge?

My mom went missing when I was 16. Committed suicide. Her body was missing for an entire year before we found her. Its agonizing. The not-knowing eats away at you. Because even if you think you know what happened, you don't actually know. The wondering if you did something wrong and they had just left, or the different scenarios that you create in your head. I don't even have the right words to explain what a tormenting feeling it is. Thank you Josh and Austin (and the entire Lights Out/Mile Higher team) for telling the stories of people who are lost so their families may have answers. Because the worst part is just, not knowing.
Also thanks for giving me a video when I am home sick.
Giant hugs, so sorry about your mom, that's awful 😢. Feel better soon, being sick is the pits😢
Oh Sugar, I am so terribly sorry 😢
I'm so sorry for your loss ❤
O my goodness I’m so sorry. ❤. Wish I could hug you
@Austin please never apologize for being an "insufferable feminist" because us women always appreciate having someone from the opposite sex back us up. It's deeply appreciated more than ever can be described . Thanks for just being woke enough to see from our side 🫶
This goes for Josh as well! We appreciate you sticking up for women and at least trying to think of what it would be like to be in a woman's "shoes" for a moment.
PREACH 🙌🏼
Eh...
Men who are anti-feminist will only listen to other men so it’s super important
🙄
Austin, you are my favorite insufferable feminist. 😉 For real though, you always have solid sociocultural takes and your perspective brings a lot to this show. Thanks for being so cool.
Just about to say the same thing! Hope he never changes! 😊
He a weirdo doe fr fr
He's wrong on saying people who are against sex workers is being misogynistic lol. Sex work is gross and dirty. Sexual transmitted diseases and many risks involved.
You are far from the only one. Authority's have thought that since the start and people of the net have known this for years.
When I realized this was her sister I was shoooookkk thank you for making the connection and covering this
Yeah, I kinda lost track, who was whom in that familiy, but I am at the point of "Doesn't really matter to me" , I'm just so incredibly sorry, that there are people "left behind" who'll have to deal with these circumstances for the rest of their lifes.
@ Austin as someone with mental illness, sometimes the side effects of some medicines are worse than the actual mental illness itself.😢 Its hard to find the right combination of what will n wont work for each person so sometimes ppl don't take their meds bc of that too ❤
Pills certainly made me worse 100% of the time. Ofc That's just me, but I can concur
@@peach0naleash hugs 🤗 Lithium made me hallucinate, it was scary. Some meds I've been on for bipolar have made me worse instead of better 😢
That's why some people with really severe cases end up having to take additional meds and supplements for psych meds too, to help them manage the side effects if they can't function without certain psych medications. It is indeed truly awful on all fronts. The pills pile up
I am schizoaffective. Got a cocktail of pills that took over 10 years to get right. Side effects are harsh with some psych meds for sure.
I was put on a mitt full of medications went into a three month psychosis. Scariest thing I've ever experienced. I don't wish it upon anyone. I lost everything!
I really do appreciate y'all acknowledging the fact that switching antidepressants is a big deal. I've been struggling with PTSD and chronic anxiety for 4 years now and it's been 2 years since I started my journey with antidepressants. I've had to switch medication 4 times now and still am struggling. It's hard for me to get the people close to me to understand the struggles that come with all of it, so it was nice to hear y'all speaking of it lightly.
Austin, please be an “insufferable feminist” more often! I always love hearing the candor between Josh and Austin (and Daniel!). I always hear something I haven’t thought about before and it helps me review my own opinions.
No let’s not ruin this channel
@@Jewel_Screaming_Chango8387 🎻
Came here to say the same thing. We need more insufferable male feminists in the world :)
his “feminist” take was literally awful and the complete opposite of feminism but okay
@@rosymoondreamshow are regulations to protect sex workers the opposite of sex worker? i’m far from a choice feminist because that simplifies feminism to the least intersectional form, but wanting legal rights for sex workers is objectively a feminist take
If sex work was legalised, it means the workers could actually go to the police for help when they are assaulted or a victim of crime because of their line of work. They'd have access to more support and would hopefully have safer outcomes mostly. It would mean that the clients would be aware of the repercussions and consequences of victimizing sex workers and would on the most part be deterred. Just like everyone is deterred from any crime; burglary, assault, rape, theft, DUI etc....
I know there will be lots of people who will have the opinion that it won't stop all clients from criminal behaviour - nothing ever does! No matter what we're talking about, there will always be a minority group of people who commit crimes and nothing can deter them. That's just life unfortunately. At least legalising sex work would give sex workers far more protection. I feel like it would start to remove the stigma and prejudices attached to it to given time.
Sex workers will always exist because there is always a demand for it. That's the cold, hard truth. Instead of leaving it in the shadows and trying to pretend we don't see it, we could be accepting its a normal part of human activity and putting our resources and effort into things that matter more. As long as no one is being hurt or having their lives negatively impacted on a certain level I don't understand the problem. Everyone who opposes it on a moral level has to ask themselves what is actually worse. Someone selling a service that they have access to in order to feed their kids and keep a roof over their heads or letting them starve and have nothing because 'sex work is a sin'. If you're bringing God into the equation, I truly believe God would forgive those who 'sin' in this way because their quality of life and welfare is far more important to Him.
Complaining about sex workers is a clever way that those in power mask and avoid the real issue at hand: with the amount of wealth and resources in the world, nobody should be forced to sell themselves so they don't starve. That's the real issue in my opinion!!
❤❤❤ I watched a documentary on Sex work in Amsterdam, it was really good, cops actually protect both the workers n clients. Workers pay taxes it's regulated like any other business, the workers in the Red Light District have safety buttons they can push n the cops will come n the cops actually patrol the area it was really fascinating
What Sarra Gilberts lawyer said is absolutely true. However, I feel that Sarra should not be living normally, free. She has proven that she cannot manage her illness. Murder and extreme animal abuse are not things that can be overlooked.
I really agree with you. I wish this was a more common thought in cases like this.
I wish I could stay awake throughout your episodes, both Josh and Austin have such soothing voices. Sometimes take 3 or 4 nights to hear it all 😂
Welcome to my club xxxxx
Omg exactly! 😂
Sameeee💀💀💀
Love you guys ❤️❤️
Hahaha yep😂
Am I the only one who thinks that Shannon’s 911 call seemed strange? I don’t know anything about her but the repetitiveness of her saying “ someone’s after me” and the tone of her voice sounds like she might be under the influence and maybe hallucinating? I don’t know just a theory I’m not assuming but I’m just interested to see what others think
That's exactly what it sounds like to me
Agreed, yeah some think she might have been drugged by her client though.
Yes really strange
She’s definitely not in her right mind. Either drugs or a mental health crisis.
Okay I’m so glad you said this because that’s exactly what I heard. Especially being in the line of work she was in. I believe drugs are or were a huge thing in that line of work. I think she may have been hallucinating which lines up with her running away when that man called the police for her but omg it racks my brain.
How can someone be expected to go through so much pain and trauma and survive. My heart goes out to the whole family. A sister and mother lost… just speechless. We as a country need to do better for each other
And the little boy!!!!
okay i wasn't ready for the part about the pitbull puppy, who tf would be, but i CERTAINLY wasn't ready for the reasoning to be "he was Eminem"
Right, bc it would've made total sense if she had, in fact, drowned m&m?????
I watched a documentary a couple of years ago about Shannan and other victims, and at the end of it it was said Shannan's mom had passed but never mentioned anything about her being murdered. I have really bad memory so I could be wrong, but wow still.
Thank you guys for another superb episode. ❤️
Yea I seen this documentary as well. Never heard of how she died. Just said she passed away. Never heard about her murder
Love the feminist comments on SW 😌. Very refreshing earring this type of conversation between two men. Let’s go guys✊🏻
Just doing my moms nails watching your podcast.
My mom: hey that guy(Austin) looks like Shia LaBeouf and the other one(josh) looks like that one actor who’s Ben Aflac’s best friend.
Me: are you talking about Matt Damon?
Mom: YEAH, him.
Lmao now I can’t unsee it 😂😅
I love it. I have had talks like this with my mother, and daughter. Just remember someday you may be the mom in this.
Josh, if you ever feel like you need another youtube gig 😂, you should totally get into narrating "true" scary stories. You have a great voice for it!
Definitely!!!
I’m from Long Island and they just found an arm and a leg yesterday in a park
😢 wow
It just doesn't end does it? Horrible and sad 😢 Stay safe 💕
So so so sad :(❤️
Wow 😮
😳
Thank you guys for talking about your opinion about the over all picture being the government trying to control women’s body and misogyny. It’s so refreshing men understanding and rooting for our rights as well. Truly thank you.
I broke my ankle 2 or 3 years ago now. When I slipped on the ice and my ankle was obviously badly broken, I called 911, and due to the fact that I hadn’t lived in the area for very long I didn’t know my location. So I asked the 911 operator to please ping my phone and to please save me because it was wet and cold and it was going to start actively snowing again. The cops found me and I stayed on the phone until they found me and the cop was so nice.
Good thing they didn't think you were under the influence or a sex worker
Confirms they definitely can find a person’s location :( sad
I find it really understandable how Sarra could end up in such a horrible mental state after such traumatic events happened to her and her family. Obviously, it doesn't mean murder is okay, but I genuinely believe she acted as she did because of mental illness (and honestly, the people who believe she was "faking it" are ableist af and show a lack of understanding of mental health issues... yes, doctors included. unfortunately, a lot of doctors hold deep-seated biases against the "scarier" mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or personality disorders and are more likely to demonize people who suffer from them; the "tests" can also be strongly affected by the practitioners' bias). Also, you mentioned how it's sad that she wasn't taking the meds that were prescribed to her, but I do want to note just how difficult it can be with many mental health conditions to find medication that actually helps. A lot of times, it isn't right for your particular brain chemistry, and sometimes can even make things worse. Sarra's could have been one such case.
Either way, I feel like she should have received better mental health help and support, especially in the wake of what happened to Shannan. It's mentioned that it seemed like she was "keeping it together" for a while, but there comes a time when you can't repress the trauma and pain anymore, and the resulting breakdown can sometimes be worse than if you were just allowed to get the feelings out when it happened. While you mention her relatives framing her as "manipulative," that's unfortunately a term that gets thrown around toward a lot of mentally ill people whenever they show symptoms, even if they aren't trying to be manipulative, so I kinda take it with a grain of salt. Regardless, I feel so bad for everything that happened to this poor family (especially the young son).
I also want to note that most people with schizophrenia are not violent. Like with most mental illnesses, the majority of people who have it aren't dangerous, and in fact, mentally ill people are more likely to be victims rather than perpetrators of abuse. For example, my closest friend has schizophrenia and is one of the kindest and most intelligent people I've ever met. (She can't even kill a bug, lmao) While cases like this are incredibly tragic, they're also far from the norm.
Austin is the best addition to Lights Out. Josh’s and his energy, aura even voice tones match perfectly lol! Best podcast duo out there in my opinion. I know it is really tiring and time consuming researching even just for one episode but one side of me which is selfish wants two episodes a week hahaha. Keep up the good work guys 👏🏻
I think people should talk more about the emotional and mental damage that comes from sex work. It’s really damaging
I 💯 agree
It's definitely not easy that's for sure 🙁 in my city if a John hurts you or commits a crime in front of you and you go to the police you are exempt from prosecutions. So I think that has helped lower assault rates.
Couldn't agree more. People need to learn more about the trauma that these women go through, there's nothing "empowering" about it.
@@ludallagnolExactly!!!
Totally agree.
Great show ❤ thanks for covering this one. The long island serial killer fascinated me before they caught the guy bc the cops seemed to genuinely not care which was sad😢. Then I heard about this story which left me in more disbelief, this poor family 💔
I had heard of this case but not about the sister murdering the mom. This whole story is a terrible tragedy.
God this is so, so sad. I’m on board with your opinions. This one is extra crazy because this family is only a few hours away from where I am in ny. For what it’s worth, in the rural areas here, specifically, but thru the entire state, mental health services are severely lacking. Which is pretty terrible considering there is also a high population of people here who are in poverty as well (again, speaking for the rural areas). Plus the weather here is pretty rough. So factor all that together, and here we are :(
Thanks for covering this one, I had no idea of this second case, or that it connected to the first!
First time watching you, not too shabby, fellas, gee thx!😊
Watch previous videos...they do some WILD cases!
Happy Friday 3pm here in NY just got off work, getting kiddos off the bus and heading to do some bowling this evening ❤
yay switched to this video real quick!!! thanks for always keeping me company friday mornings ❤
What a tragic case, I cannot imagine what this family has and continues to go through. I hope Sarra’s son is in good hands.
Her mother also “abandoned” (she felt abandoned - I am not saying her mother actually abandoned her) her in search for justice for her sister who went missing & later was found deceased
I always love watching or listening to your podcasts, but I miss the paranormal episodes. In that you were quite unique.
Love you guys. ✨
I feel the same way I miss those episodes
Wow, this was awesome coverage of a case. What a tragic story all around, the amount of trauma throughout their lives is unimaginable.
I think Sarra knew it was wrong by law, but not in her mind.
She is guilty, but I think it would have been more appropriate to put her into psychiatric care instead of prison.
I'm off to go watch the mile higher coverage now of the serial killer dude.
Great episode guys, just what I needed today after a shite day 🙌.
Austin... you're not an insufferable feminist 😂, I appreciated your comments, and you Josh! ❤
I’m at home sick today what a treat to get the notification for this video 😊 thanks guys! Appreciate your guys hard work every video!
Feel better soon. 🙏 💐
Home sick with a sick kid today! I hope you feel better. ❤️
In my second day of quarantine with COVID. LOP definitely helps make it more bearable.
I hope you get to feeling better soon!
@@c.j.c.6293I also hope you and your kiddo feel better soon!
Yay! Another great video. Thank you all at lights out for uploading another video✨
Preach Austin, Preach! Sex work should be legal, regulated, and we should provide the workers childcare. Also, misogyny is the killer of all things. Don't ever apologize for being a feminist. We need more men like yall on our side.
Have some respect for yourself lol
If she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and sometimes it got worse, it's probably because she wasn't taking her medications. Some people with mental illness will choose not to take their meds. I'm not victim blaming but if I had a kid with schizophrenia, you'd best bet I'd be on top, making sure that they were taking their meds.
Yeah but once they are adults you can try but not force them
@@ashleymilden5946 if that was my child and refused to take her meds, I'd probably get her committed to a mental institution for my and others safety. I had a cousin who was a real schizophrenic and I made a point of not being around him, the dumbass would talk to his clothes and have a full conversation, nuts
The only fallacy in that comment is that she was an adult. I was diagnosed with Bipolar when I was 22 and it's always been my responsibility to take my meds, go to the doctor. I know that BP and schizophrenia are different illnesses, and I don't know anything about how the meds make you feel. I
Coming off antipsychotics can cause rebound symptoms that are worse than before taking the meds. I have gone off mine once or twice and it got me a 7 day vacation to a psych ward because I totally checked out of reality. I was holding conversations with my kitchen appliances. 😂
Does anyone else think it’s strange that they couldn’t trace the call?
😮 true
Yes because I know for a fact that they can.
@gingerlee726 the technology to trace was not as good then as it is now.
I’m so glad u guys are using the word legalize and not decriminalize…… not many people understand the difference, decriminalize almost makes the situation worse, because it’s still not legal and can’t be treated as a business so u end up having really bad people continuing to take advantage of these women
Thanks for explaining
You should Include Austin in the thumbnails 👉👈
Daniel too😊
Austin was in them for a stretch and then stopped, so maybe he doesn't like being in them. Who really knows
@@citizn-xh7rv gotcha maybe so
I agree with more than one medical examiner especially in cases of suspicious deaths.
I had followed my moms wishes I getting cremated. A couple hours late my aunt convinced me to do a. Autopsy, it was too late unfortunately. She had already been cremated. Please even if it’s no suspicious, get an autopsy
@@cholieandresaFor some reason I thought it was standard.

Really sad what has plagued this family! We are from ulster county and very surprised we never heard about this case so thank you!!
That poor puppy... forever in my thoughts 😢
Josh and Austin, love your programmes.
Thank you for the warning about Animal abuse, that does trigger me.
I also think that when the department was so vocal about her not being one of the serial killers victims that also has something to do with the medical examiner’s report. They should have to have a second opinion in those type of cases
A lot of sex workers believe it should be DECRIMINALIZED not REGULATED. Just puttin that out there.
As a sex worker... THIS!
I think they may have meant putting more safety acts in place. A proper site or way to gain clients, a secure meeting spot perhaps. I’m not trying to speak their words but I think they are looking for more precautions so we don’t see as many of these poor woman in their cases. Especially when they are only trying to provide for their families just as a McDonalds worker is
I've noticed the workers seem to get punished while the clients don't which is bullshit
@@annieannie2887hugs ❤ be safe out there 🤗
just got done with your 3hr Mile Higher video and this popped up right after. it's kismet!
Algorithm lol
I think the idea that people suffering from psychotic episodes don't pre-plan murders or have relevant motives is a very damaging concept. Just because she knew that what she was doing was wrong, doesn't mean she was aware of the gravity of her actions.
Was wathcing the candyman episode when I got the notification switched to this one right after
Probably and odd comment but still want to share. I would just like to thank you (for the amazing episodes) but also for the subtle music at the beginning and end. I listen to you to fall asleep because your voices are so soothing (consequently I have to rewatch many episodes when I’m awake) but a lot of other podcasts have such loud or just more stimulating music they always wake me up. I don’t have that problem here.
I did somehow end up on the supernatural playlist a few days ago and woke up to the sounds of an exorcism 😂.
I saw a film 'lost girls ' about this case. It's a strange one.
I did too 😢
Another interesting case I would like for yall to cover is the story about the 2 boys on the track. It happened in Arkansas. It has a whole lot of interesting things about the story.
This happened about 25 minutes from me. I remember first getting into true crime and hearing about Sara in our local newspapers, which then lead me down the rabbit hole of the LISK. Stevie was actually my moms neighbor up until recently. The whole story is just sad all around. My prayers go out to Sara, that she is able to get the help she needs.
This case is really really difficult for me and I go back and forth on what I believe. First of all Sarah definitely had so much trauma in her life, way beyond the majority of us can even fathom so I don’t see how any of us can judge her or even put ourselves in her mindset. Also, what gets me is that she stabbed her Mother 227 times. That takes SO much force, rage, strength and energy. Most stabbings even in the most extreme circumstances don’t go beyond between 30 and 50 and that even takes a lot of effort. Anyways, really the only reason that I have for thinking that she could possibly have been exaggerating her mental illness is that I don’t know her and so obviously I can’t say for certain. Either way I truly wish this family the best and I hope that the two sisters are able to get through this by being there for each other and with the love of their family and friends.
I've been curious about it myself, I've looked it up before but just a quick search says the reason prostitution is illegal is apparently due to a possible rise in crime, such as assault, abuse, and r**e, be it from pimps or clients, as well as a rise in sex trafficking (apparently in countries where sex work was legal) and human trafficking is already bad enough. I think it would still be an issue even if the government did try to regulate it somehow.
Put "wackadoo" on a shirt lol
So heartbreaking!
The Long Island Killer case has always been on my heart. I’m from the same town as Amber Costello and we ran in the same circle. I met her a few times. Even though I didn’t know her very well, her death saddened me so much. What an awful fate to meet. 🥺 If it wasn’t for Shannon Gilbert, who knows if those bodies would have ever been found.
The you guys for this I’m a SW and I broke down, crying when you guys said that you guys support it being legal
Yayyyy Lights Out🎉🎉🎉🎉
I remember looking into this when I was googling about shannen and the gilgo beach murders and seeing what her sister did to her mom and was amazed more people were not talking about it!!
Two very sad and disturbing family situations, I hope sarra’s young son has a much better life, along with sherre and her children
I love you guys voices.
Wow this is so sad, I had no idea about this case or that Shannon was her sister. This is horrible
No way on earth should the childhood abuse as well as mental illness be completely ignored and they be given the max. That sentence endorses prejudice against people with mental issues as well as child abuse. Terrible.
@9:41 why couldn’t dispatch trace the call? Don’t get it.
I think it was the location of where Shannon was at. I'm glad they finally caught the long island serial killer, seems like it took them forever
Huge thank you for the heads up on animal abuse. I can listen to a lot, but animals i just cant do. Its extremely triggering for me. Please never stop givng trigger warnings for this.
was her case on Unsolved?? i vaguely remember watching this and as soon as you played her 911 call it sounded so familiar
Have a great weekend everyone!
Be safe. 😊❤
You guys should look into what’s going on in Babylon, NY right now. They are finding body parts all over the place at Southards Pond and a few other parks. It’s terrifying.
I'm bothered by the fact that Austin is in almost no thumbnails. He is the co host correct? Why is he not included ?
It's been bothering me as well!
That pink panther comment was a slap! 😭🙌🏽
I have been binge watching all your episodes, but this one, this one is shocking...how do you stab someone over 200 times...
Guys! Have you heard of the Bill Vaile demonic possession? (Sorry if you've covered it and I missed it) Im normally not one to recommend cases but I just watched a super uncritical video about it the other day and I'd love for you guys to discuss it and point out the (hopefully existent) inconsistencies with it 😂❤🙈
My niece is a good friend of her (Sarra) son, he is a great kid and a lot of fun, I’ve known him for several years and just found out about this not too long ago, you’d never know he had such tragedy in his early years.
You've clearly never been to long Island. It's a LOT bigger than you seem to think, and there are a lot of thick woods in places. Implying that the police should have just "combed the island" looking for her is ludicrous.
Just got the notification switched immediately lol
i had no idea she was connected to one of the LISK victims!! I work in the city and he was arrested right outside where i grab coffee 😓 missed the arrest by a few hours
Excited to watch this..I remember back when I heard about her sister's struggles and mom Mary's death, I thought "Grrreat. This doesn't help Shannan's case because I don't believe Shannan was delusional and all that happened because of bipolar or schizo"
I wish people wouldn't say sx workers were lured in by shoes and purses. For myself and anyone I know its for survival or drugs. I can't imagine doing it for a purse. Im glad you said that after the moms statement because I was feeling kinda irritated.
You and anyone you know, was lured into sex work for drugs... (I understand addiction patterns )....or for survival, what do you mean by this? (The survival part) How is someone lured Into sex work for survival? (This is in NO way snarky, rude, or anything negative, I know how the internet trolls can be, this is a legitimate question, based on a legitimate comment.) Much love 💚💚💚💚
It shouldn’t matter if the murderer has mental illness or not. She’d been hospitalized and still didn’t get the help she needed when given the opportunity. Mental illness shouldn’t be brought up in the court room at all for a reason they’re not guilty. That could of easily been her poor son.
It sounded like some one tackled her to the ground and covered her mouth to me
Wild opinion. Psychologically speaking, the long term affects and back ground of of some sex workers have a common vulnerability and can have long term damage. HOWEVER, keep your laws off our bodies and make it safe for everybody to practice sex work.
We dont need to be daughters to have value. We dont need to be mothers to have value. Or sisters. We are people ffs. We exist and deserve to exist.
12:42 I’ve always felt like her drugs were laced or she was given something 💔
I remember hearing about this story after Shannon's story came out, Ive always wondered how much of a role Shannon murder played in this? It may have caused Sara to snap mentally, this poor family 😢

I CANNOT BELIEVE,that I've not heard of this case..😲 obviously,I know Shannon,however I don't think I've ever come across the rest of this family's story..😕
I never heard of this story before. I heard about the gilgo beach one but not sarra gilberts.
What happened to Shannon was so tragic..😕 but, she's helped all these girls' families find them, and no doubt, saved other women's lives..in a roundabout way.
I feel so bad for Sheree and Sarah’s son. I hope he still has his Dad but now Sheree has no one. 😔
And why didn't they ask the people who called from their homes what their addresses were?
My adopted mom was a physically abusive monster sometimes at night when my dad was working night shifts. I would've unleashed on her like this if I were stronger. Narcissistic manipulation and Mind control is REAL.
