You Must Be POOR to Be Saved: The Mark Series pt 37 (

- Jesus' interaction with the rich, young ruler has been used by some to promote socialism and others have approached it looking for an explanation of justification like what we find in Romans. After spending some time on this passage and in the Gospel of Mark as a whole I think both of these approaches are wrong. This will be a careful, vs by vs study of Jesus' interaction with the rich man in Mark 10. We'll look at some controversy about this passage but our main concern will be to hear Jesus' radical call to come to Him for salvation, which is impossible for us to obtain without Him, and to come fully invested in His kingdom. What Jesus teaches through this encounter gives us not only an offer of salvation but a call to discipleship, where Jesus is not only a source of forgiveness, He is the very purpose of our live's and choosing Him means choosing His kingdom over our own or the kingdom of this age. It's that last part that I think people overlook when teaching on the rich man and I hope that this study helps you to understand it well.

@@isakhedeen this is a month late, but if you look at Revelation 22 and 2 Peter, the current heavens and earth will pass away and be dissolved in a fervent heat. 2 Peter 3:8-10. And Revelation 20:15 says that hell itself will be casted into the lake of fire, at the day of Judgement.
Chapter 21 of Revelation states that the current heavens and earth will pass away and be recreated into the New Heavens and New Earth. Where all of God's people shall live in a glorious city called New Jerusalem with God forever.
So the current heaven and hell are not eternal, though they are in a state of eternity where time doesn't work the way it does in our world.

The thing He asked me to give up most recently was smoking weed. While I have never felt convicted that smoking was a sin, this message showed me that I had put weed on an equal if not more important footing with God. When I felt the conviction to quit, I gathered all my weed and stuff that went with it, and threw it away. I have not looked back. I have faith that because I have been obedient to His will in this matter, much fruit will be produced in me through Him. That is the first desire of my heart anymore. To produce righteous fruit in Him. Love you Mike thanks for another great message.
Yeah my other conviction is pornography and stealing. But I guess it should become obvious that it's a sin as masturbating. I'm drinking alcohol but it seems so as long as I don't get drunk and hurt someone and myself such as drink 40%er alcohol bottle which will kill me once I drink that hard distasteful liquor. I don't it makes sense to label alcohol as nasty. It's actually distasteful and stupid. I drink alcohol but with something else that makes it interestingly taste good and I can get drunk I've decided but I don't hurt no one and I try not to waste time . I did allow the holy Spirit within beside me to convicting me having multiple alcoholic bottles in my possession so I threw them away but not actually alcohol. If I can't control my alcohol consumption then I must break all my bottles into the trash. But I haven't allowed anyone to see me drunk nor would I make it obviously that I'm drunk. Because I withold the feeling to become stupid. The weird wanting desire to do stupid but thrilling actions that could kill me such as drinking drunk and driving though at least it won't be while drinking and literally driving. But yeah if I had a job I'd imagine I'd get a wife marry her and procreate with her conceive children you know and get a good life going kicking it on yeah!!! Amen in Jesus name life isn't boring lame nor stupid nor does it dangerous.

What a relief that we can't and don't have to earn our salvation. We wouldn't ever be able. Plus, knowing that no effort of mine could ever achieve perfection is a relief. Its comforting. Thank you Lord Jesus for your sacrifice for me 🙏🏾

Great things to remember as a Christian:
-We earn or merit nothing: He paid it all
-We cannot merit or earn it: don't think you fail to live up to it, know you do, and
-We do not merit or earn His love: but we have it. Found yourself in that.
-We're called to do more than merely believe *if* we believe: "If you love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15)
-If we trust Him with our salvation, we should also do so with our life.
We should be completely *for* Him: nothing of ours held back, kept secret, or held above Him.
I've a long way to go.
His love sets us free to love Him just as we are, and to follow Him as He commands.
Continue in His love (John 15:9), rest in the peace He has promised us (John 14:27), obey Him (John 14:15), abide in Him (John 15:4), and joy in Him (John 15:11), even when struggling.
None of us are perfect. But you don't (and can't) perfect yourself: you come to God because He's perfect.

I think one of my greatest problems is not confronting my coworkers about the bible and the gospel, just bc I want to avoid the arguments and the confrontation.

We all will have to leave our riches behind when and if we are still alive when the persecution comes. They will take everything from us as we will not be able to sell or buy. We must be ready to leave it all behind and follow Christ.

I know what you mean. I also heard someone teach that the passage was meant as a joke and that the apostles "laughed" when they heard it. While I am quite sure that GOD has a sense of humor, I seriously doubt that he would have used his teaching as a comedy skit.

What we understand from this is that If one cannot leave his love for wealth and lust, he is not accepted to follow Jesus.
I've always looooved Apostle Paul but I don't really have a 100 reasons why. Now that you've touched on the fact that his weaknesses was coveting/lust (which I didn't know) gives me one more reason to love him. I'm thinking, from struggling with lust to completely being single! That's a powerful WOW!!! I know mostly love him because he freed me from ever feeling the pressure to have a husband and then family cz the stigma attached to single ladies here in South Africa is insane. But when one knows what the apostle Paul taught, one gets forever transformed mentally. I'm very grateful for that teaching in particular with reference to thee apostle Paul. Nothing has freed me more apart from Christ's salvation. God is awesome and I'm privileged to be a born again Christian. 😁
This is so good! The whole passage is against earning salvation! I needed this. WoF taught me the needle gate analogy as well as the idea that the disciples astonishment was because they expected believers to be wealthy.
I don't expect myself to become wealthy. No but I want to own wealth as money. And wealth as health. And wealth as many physical land to have physical stuff on it and make more money to prosper people. But I would like to necessarily become humble and humility oriented where I say funnel money so people have their teeth fixed because of what God could do through me as a simple tube and God is the water that actually nourishes humans I'm as a human simply the tube that the travel waters in.
Yea; we are all so priviledge living at this time and in the U.S. The middle class which is most of us HAVE what other ppl in other countries would dream of having. Yet we complain too much. God bless

This channel is great, but i don't like how he is not focusing more on the more than possible scenario of the mark and the new world order of the antichrist coming to the world. It's more important than any other teaching lately.
If you think this makes no sense, and that the signs are not happening, in my humble opinion we are seeing the apostasía happening, wars, rumors of wars, disasters, pestilences, Jerusalem is like Sodom and Egypt spiritually nowdays as revelations say, the UN is in control not our countries so the one world government is a reality as we speak... It's surely adding up, all it takes is for someone to claim to be god and force the mark on us.

Thanks for this video Mike. This is a teaching I need to hear over and over again. I know that there's nothing we can do to earn salvation & we are bankrupt apart from God's grace and Christ's atoning sacrifice, but over and over again, I turn back onto my own resources and (often subtly) try to look at my own performance as some sort warrant for salvation. (Obviously I don't have what it takes, but in my pride, over and over again I try, instead of relying on Him.) Thanks very much - this is a blessing.

The "eye of the needle" was a shortcut from the road from Jericho to Jerusalem, and it was a very narrow way with high rocky sides that you had to follow single file. There was no way to get a loaded camel through it. And who was going to unload their camel, and leave all their stuff on the side of the road? This was a rough place, where you could get mugged (particularly in the shortcut). And if you did try it, your camel would balk and get stubborn. So if you had a camel you couldn't take the shortcut at all. No one who wasn't desperate and in a big hurry, and really traveling light, was going that way. Merchants and persons of any means always took the regular route, which was hard enough already.
Using the "needle's eye" was like, if you give up everything to follow Jesus, including your own pride and righteousness, to become a saint... and count that as taking a shortcut to follow Him. And indeed, if you take the path of a religious vocation, vows and all, you have to give away all of your possessions, even today.
I don't know how good a person this "rich young ruler" really was. He might have been a "good man," compared to others, while yet avid for his wealth too. But no one is truly "good" except God. Moreover, having anything in your life which you esteem more than God is a definite roadblock. Jesus is always asking us for commitment and dedication, to offer up all we have in order to follow Him, all the way to the cross if necessary.

Hi Mike, Jesus states "I am the good shepherd" in two verses, John 10:11 and 10:14.Jesus does declare himself as good. He's clearly saying this in an ironic joking tone, which is confirmed by verse 21 , "jesus felt a love for him" , this was how Jesus approached people multiple time with you can call *tongue in cheek* rhetorical questions. Essentially JESUS has said he's GOOD, this for us to pick up on. God bless
Gaming, Jesus loved ( agapao) the rich, young ruler....who went away sorrowful. He didn't go away with a worldly sorrow. The Jewish way was answering a question with a question......and yet Jesus went beyond that. He knew the heart.

When Jesus comes back and says why do you call me good, I think he’s teaching that we should see him as God and the savior not just as a teacher. What good is it if we learn from him but do not believe in him.

While I can understand the risks of wealth and coming to idolize wealth, there is a subtle adjunct to having wealth (which many of us do have by virtually any historical measure) that I think is easy to overlook, but which I think can be as deadly for us as wealth was for the rich, young ruler: the love of comfort and convenience. These aren’t new, but they are geometrically multiplied in a consumer-focused culture that reinforces an expectation of being catered to. I see this in myself in amazingly petty ways when I’m standing in a long line at a coffee shop, or when my order isn’t filled to my expectations. Christ calls me to a diminished focus on myself, on my needs and wants and expectations. This is a jarring call when I expect to be pampered and catered to. Am I willing to sacrifice those self-focused assumptions and expectations in order to follow Christ, wherever it may lead?
Jesus was basically saying to this rich young ruler that he has no idea what Good is, and that his projection of Good on Jesus was way off base.
The main lesson here is to teach that we should not build our treasures and wealth on earth where it will ultimately wither and decay away. Rather, build your treasures in heaven and in the spirit through faith in Jesus Christ, where it is eternal.

Should and must are 2 different things. Unfortunately ppl teach this as a requirement for salvation. Imagine all the ppl going to hell for not plucking their eye out and cutting their hand off, that includes you. Just because it's in the new testament doesn't mean it's part of the new covenant for salvation.

Id argue that it takes a certain level of sincerity to follow Christ. The man didn't sincerely want Christ... Though he sincerely wanted eternal life.

Interesting point Kevin. I would say this is a present common reality in many believers. Usually of the sinners prayer contingency. The desire for Jesus to forgive us and grant us eternal life, but not to have Jesus save us from our sins.
I always wonder this question though: you never hear from him ever again. But that does not mean he didn't go on to sell his possessions and follow Jesus. It just states he went and cried because it was hard. I always wonder if he ever did change his mind after his encounter with Jesus.

People make money their idol when they have too much and if it isn't the money, it's themselves for having or earning the money. Give me neither riches, nor poverty. So that I may not have too much and forgot the name of my God or that I may not have too little and steal, in so dishonouring his name. Give me only my daily bread.
Jesus is speaking as how things will be in God's heaven...where love is constantly in everyone's heart. There, no one will need any wealth or riches. Love will be in us and with us, because God is love! I long for this place, where I am rid of my lustful, greedy heart! 😞 What am I, without His grace?
Hi Mike, A little off topic in my comment so sorry for that. Anyway, I've just recently subscribed to your channel and am so thankful for what you are doing In Christ with this channel. however, :) I really strongly recommend that you teach based on the ESV for this reason: NASB in the has rephrased some of the most important core text regarding Yahweh and the heavenly council. Please consider a translation that is textually up-to-date. For example, a Bible that adopts readings in its running text from the Dead Sea Scrolls where they are demonstrably superior to the Masoretic Text. Dr. Michael Heiser presents a good test case for this is Deuteronomy 32:8 and Deuteronomy 32:43. "The former should read “sons of God” (ESV; cp. “gods” in NRSV), or something like “heavenly beings” (NET Bible) or “heavenly court” (NLT) instead of “sons of Israel.” Verse 43 should read “bow down to Him, all you gods” (ESV, NRSV) or something akin to it like NLT’s “let all God’s angels worship him.” Also compare Psalm 82 in NASB vs ESV. Basically the entire context is missing. this leads to a misunderstanding of who the "Sons of God" really are. Anyway, thanks again brother and keep up the good work.

I believe that for us in America, we have become scared to suffer for the gospel at all because we are so used to a life of freedom and ease. We are clearly leaving this time of ease with the new political climate, and unfortunately I believe we will see a great falling away as persecution rises in America.
I feel like God has been convicting me on this subject. Why do we need money or riches? Or why are we scared of losing money? I think it perhaps stems from a deeper rooted fear of dying.
“Why do you need money?”
“Well how else can I buy food?”
“Why do you need food?”
“Without it, I’ll die.”
“You’re going to heaven, why are you afraid of death?”
Because honestly, if one TRULY believes they are going to heaven, how is anything, be it persecution, going without food, or giving away money, scary? Those things are still scary to me, but I’m going to actively try to have more faith in what God has given us.

The tuff thing that no denominations dare to say here is - we should follow Jesus literally - leaving our houses, family, etc. if needed, just to preach and teach the salvation in Jesus.

In regard to the eye of the needle reference. While in Jerusalem in 2018 at one of the gates I believe was the Joffa gate the large gate when closed had a man sized door in the main gate and if someone wanted to enter the city the watchman on the night watch would open the man sized door to allow access to the city after the gate was closed for the safety of the city. Hopefully that helps.

I can see how it’s really about goodness and our not being good, but I can also see how it could still be referencing Jesus’ deity in the beginning and reinforcing that in the end. Jesus could have asked the question as a way to get the rich man to think or to lead the conversation to answer it more fully. Jesus could have been pointing out that this rich man was calling him good because he viewed Jesus as God, Messiah, the one who had the answer to eternal life, or prompting him to confess or believe this if he didn’t. Jesus could have answered his question also in his own question by pointing out that Jesus is good because He is God and no one else is good, so Jesus’ righteousness is the way to eternal life. This would make sense why Jesus says with God it is possible.

Dear Brother, the only thing I would say about the introduction of this video is that Jesus is actually talking about money, and material things. If that’s the desire and God isn’t the desire. Then the heart is not good. If the money is being used righteously that’s a good things for the Kingdom, but most people don’t use money righteously. I don’t feel like this one that needs to be spiritualized or given a hidden meaning. The Bible’s even says we can not have two masters, we can’t serve God and mammon(money) or The desires of the World. So if a person has no desire for the world this is the only way we can follow Christ. The less that there is desire for worldly things, the more the desire for heavenly things increase through The Spirit of God. Jesus Christ was also poor. Not having the desire for materials things gives one the ability to give there entire life to God and anything God gives us we should give it to his work. This is how we store up treasures in heaven.
I’m going to need another note book or 6 for this series.
What cracks me up is somehow people think God blessing you means he blesses you financially. I don’t know if y’all noticed or not but most Christians in the Bible, INCLUDING Jesus were dirt poor. The Bible repeatedly talks about not focusing on money.

Is saying that we won't leave our house and relatives in our hearts. (We all fall short).
The things we receive a hundred fold will come with an equal amount of persecutions.
Then in the next life, we will gain eternal life.

It is about the deity of Christ. It's a rhetorical question in a very effective teaching method where the student answers what the teacher already knows.
Hey Mike, I have a question regarding choosing one kingdom over the other. Would you say that somebody who is a collector Of “stuff” (just whatever somebody might like to collect) is choosing the earthly kingdom over the other? Let’s say for example a person likes to collect old vinyl records from 70s metal bands, is this person choosing the earthly kingdom for doing that? Or, for another example, somebody likes toy lines from the 80s And 90s, and this person has a room in his house devoted to displaying their collection. What kingdom is that man serving? Maybe, a person likes collecting pieces of art that catch their eye and inspired them, what kingdom would you say that person is serving? Thank you for replying… If you do… :-)
I don’t think it is inherently wrong just as riches themselves are not inherently wrong. It’s a more intimate issue of the heart

Thank you mike winger ! I do have a question 🙋🏽♀️. I have heard people prosperity teachers preach the right young ruler that when you give up everything there is a reward in your sacrifice and that he will give you a hundred fold of what you lost. Now your take on the scripture was a little different it’s saying basically that what we lost cannot compare to the benefits of Christ. What does that intel like what the prosperity preachers teach of getting back everything that you gave up? Or is there a different meaning and how can we dispute that kind of teaching what can I say to direct a better understanding of mark 10:30

Feel love or choose and decide to act with love ... here lies the crux.
Stewartship affords temptations of pride and greed because of power and comfort, easy to succumb to, hard to recognize.
Allowing only that stewartship required by you to do the will and glory of God is prudent, blessing here and now can be a test, save them for "later".
My reading of this verse is a little different insofar as the scripture records that Jesus loved the man.
I take from that I don't think he was lying (from his perspective) when he says he has kept the commandments from youth. Certainly his view on the commandments may not have been as far as what Jesus taught, but I do think he was honestly sincere and honest.
It does hit home, however that Jesus often picks that one area in our life that we are least willing to give to Him in his call for obedience.
Anybody have any thoughts about the camel and needle passage?
I've heard that the Aramaic Peshitta has a word there similar to camel, but means ship rope.
So the verse would say "thread a ship rope through the eye of a needle"
That makes sense to me, maybe more than the camel rendering. Obviously either way it's rendered this has no impact on the meaning or message of this passage.

At 5:34 what was the name of that bible commentary?
What does it look like to use our money/riches for His kingdom? I struggle with taking these things as an all or nothing... Like is it a sin to eat at a nice restaurant or go on a trip? Is that the best way to steward our money as Christians? Or is there still beauty in enjoying and being grateful for the blessings God has given us?
My family handles it like this: 10% of every kind of income is secretly donated to whatever place is on your heart (secretly means that it's not made a topic, according to Matthew 6:3), and from time to time (when we saved up more money than is reasonable to have) my parents decide where to give a portion of it to. It's never a fix amount though, it's always as much as their conscience tells them. And we children don't ever know the amounts they give/have.
So yeah, it's not an "all or nothing", rather obedience to your conscience. If you feel bad for having as much money as you have, give as much as you are happy to give. But don't ever brag about it. Your reward is in heaven, not the praise of men.
The LORD knows your heart and he will SHOW you your heart and you will KNOW what the LORD say's is true. He IS the truth.

Armando C. I think you might be mixing your verses a little too much. Let’s pretend person 1 is wealthy and serves ministries with their wealth and loves their neighbour. Then there is person 2 who is poor that complains about being poor and does nothing for anyone else. Who is first in the kingdom of God?
