  • We can easily read through this passage without having a clue as to how much deep and thoughtful material it contains. We learn stuff about the relationship between Jesus, Moses and Elijah, the difference between the first and second coming, why Peter wanted to build tabernacles for them, how Jesus' glory shows He is greater than Moses and much more. On a personal note, I have been thoroughly enjoying this methodical study through the Gospel of Mark and I'm grateful that you can join me as we mine the depths of scripture for it's treasures!
Here's the whole Mark series playlist covering both theology and apologetics in Mark. • The Gospel of Mark Ser...

When I was a teenager Jesus interrupted my dream and I saw Him. He looked how He is described in the transfiguration. Jesus is beautiful. I could not see his face His face shined as a bright light. His robe was a beautiful white that shown too. He said Come to Me. His words were in my head not spoken outloud. But there is no question. For many years I stumbled on being born again.I made it. Jesus is my Lord! When we die we step into eternity. Made Jesus Lord of your life before it is too late. We have no promise of tomorrow. @@jeremiahreese6396 You might not see this after a whole year, but I have to tell you that Elijah did NOT go to heaven. In the events of 2 Kings 2, the "Heavens" being referred to was the sky. Elijah was miraculously carried away to a place of safety away from Jezebel and to a new prophetic assignment, apparently in Judah. A number of years later we encounter Elijah again. Elijah writes a letter to wicked King Jehoram expressing Jehovah's condemnation. In the Bible this is at 2 Chronicles 21:12-15.
The NT makes it very clear that NOBODY went to heaven prior to Jesus Christ (John 3:13), and that nobody else would go there until Christ's "presence". (1 Corinthians 15:23)

Great teaching, thank you. It has always amazed me that Peter, James and John saw the transfiguration and yet in the Garden of Gethsemane it says that everyone deserted Jesus. This was a great deep dive into these verses. I heard a pastor say that Jesus saying " Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power" was referring to the pentecost, which sounded plausible to me, but after listening to your explanation, the transfiguration makes much more sense. Thank you.

  • @chrisbrower9532
    @chrisbrower9532 Před 4 lety +12

The apologetic tying Jesus’ statement, “... some standing here who will not taste death...” to the Transfiguration (which happens immediately after this in the text), should’ve been so obvious, but this is honestly the first I’ve realized this is likely what He was referring to. We seem to just look at it as a cap to the whole death/resurrection talk at the end of chapter 8; and it is, but it’s meant to lead into the events of 9 as well. I’ve always felt strange about the full Preterist view, so this is great. I think it’s clear that there are both partial and multiple fulfillments of some prophecies.
Also, I agree that the 2 Peter 1:1-18 is certainly talking about this event, in retrospect. What’s cool is you can even add the last few verses, 19-21 to show that even though he was one of only a few that witnessed it, he doesn’t solely use this as his evidence of who Jesus is. He backs it up with Scripture and goes on to say that “we have the word of prophecy made MORE sure”. It’s important to understand that our personal subjective experiences, while invaluable to ourselves, mean very little to nothing to unbelievers. We need to be able to bring solid, objective evidence to our witnessing as well, and I think Peter values the evidence of prophecy as much, if not more so than even his own private revelation.
    Nice work, man 👍🏻

I’m with you Mike when you talk about people using the name of Jesus in ways that don’t reflect His glory.
I have heard Pastors talk about Jesus as if He was like a friendly neighbour, someone who you could go to for a favour. I always cringe whenever I hear people talk about Jesus in ways that don’t reflect His power, glory, and ultimate authority.
Many people seem to have a view of God where the Father is a distant figure, whilst Jesus is kind of a lesser person, whereas the scriptures reveal Jesus to be ALMIGHTY GOD in the flesh.
I used to think that I would really like to have been present with the disciples, or just to have a face to face encounter with Jesus like they did, but now I don’t know so much. I long to see Him, but at the same time, I’m aware that I have this fear of the Lord, just like John experienced when Jesus appeared to him in the first verses of Revelation.
I often consider that text, because John was one of the closest people to Jesus and yet when he had this experience, he was so frightened that he threw himself on the ground.
If that was John’s reaction, then I expect that such an encounter would also be something similar.
I look at the Gospels and I see that Jesus would have been a far different person than the popular version most often presented in sermons. His gaze would not have been a comfortable thing to have focused on oneself I believe.
I’m amazed at how few Christians seem to grasp this element of the person of Jesus. They focus on His love and compassion, and that’s good and true, but they don’t seem to understand His directness of speech, which is right there in the text, alongside those softer characteristics. I think I would have said very little in His presence for fear of rebuke, unlike Peter.
I also wonder at how many Christians don’t really understand that when Jesus comes back, He is going to be a very different person to what they think. The first verses of Isaiah 63 reveal a different characteristic of Jesus and I believe many people will be completely unprepared for that.
Thank you for your love of the Truth.

5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son,[a] with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”

Brother Mike I’ve learned a lot from you thanks ...here is the light I have on Mark 9:1.
And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power." (Mark 9:1, ESV)
At Pentecost (all the disciples were there except Judas he had died) on that day
..the Kingdom of God with POWER / Holy Spirit came.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8, ESV)
And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with POWER from on high." (Luke 24:49, ESV)
But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. (Matthew 12:28, ESV)

Mike i don't usually compliment people because I don't like boosting people's ego's but man you're awesome I've learned so much every sermon I've heard from you has been so edifying to me like no other pastor ever has, obviously besides the good shepherd Jesus. Another thing I appreciate so much about you is that when you're not sure about a doctrine you don't just say "this is how it is, I'm right and you're not"

I have long thought that Stephen was also in the crowd that Jesus told 'Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.'
Acts 7: 55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
I would say Stephen got a good look at Jesus in His true glory before he died.

    So, thank you my Father
    And thank you His Son
    For sin has no place
In the man that I've become
For my flesh may be weak
    But the Spirit has overcome
    I'm diving in deep
    I'm filling up my lungs
Put to death the old me
Rising up with a new heartbeat
    Satan wants to creep
But Jesus keeps him under my feet
    Crush him to pieces
    Live like light
    and the darkness retreats
    The adversary has no chance
The sword I carry is the Lords peace
    Go on, take your shot
Try to make me act a fool
God is on in this heart
A fire that pushes back the devils tools
    I raise a battle cry
    I worship until I die
    I raise a battle cry
I will worship all alone, I am not shy
I will worship with the crowd
We are yours, we are loud
    I will worship by myself
I'm am yours, in me you are so loud
    I'm dropping my old self
    I recognize my faults
You hung up on that cross
So I may retain the salt
    Praise Jesus Christ our Lord
    Praise him in the day
    Praise him in the storm
    Praise Jesus Christ our King
    Praise him in our dreams
Praise him in our new form
    Even when I'm lacking

    Even when I'm lacking
I know who is my rock

    Keep me strong

And some of the believers co-partake of this glory with Jesus - "When He comes to be glorified in His saints and to be marveled in all those who have believed ..." (See Second Thess. 1:10). "... GLORIFIED IN HIS SAINTS... MARVELED IN ALL THOSE WHO HAVE BELIEVED ... " I am only at 14:39 point in the video. Maybe you'll make a similar point latter on ? Good teaching Mike.

Would like if you could do a breakdown on women's role now after this dispensation of Grace! Is it legit strictly as Paul referenced in 1 Corinthians and 1 Timothy.. or does God possibly raise women 'speakers'- teachers etc to do His will whatever the reason be as in the Old Testament with Ruth, Esther, Deborah...

    Hi Mike,
I'm really enjoying this series on Mark. I have also found your stuff on Jehovah's Witnesses very helpful. Kind of related to the JWs' refusal to have blood transfusions, I was wondering if you have any thoughts as to whether Christians should avoid black pudding? In the Council of Jerusalem, the prohibition from eating blood seems to be affirmed, but if we're not under law, does that make it a contextual/temporary ruling?
Praying that you continue to preach the gospel and bless people with your ministry 🙂

When re-thinking about the disciples thinking He was coming back "very soon"/"quickly" - as with other things, I think they just mistakenly jumped to the conclusion that He meant "every soon". But.....
    Jesus said in Revelation:
“And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.
No, reading it again, seems He is actually saying when He does come back, it will be "quickly" - the event will happen very, very fast and not slowly. When the disciples asked Him about the end of the age He confirmed that before that happened there would be wars, etc., etc. and the Antichrist would have appeared.
Didn't give the impression it would be very soon at all.
I've noticed there're other issues like that as well about certain statements that we've misinterpreted bc of preconceived mindset or something.
