Mike, I've been preaching for over 30 years and I have heard thousands of sermons and this teaching on Satan is the most comprehensive and Scripturally solid teaching I have ever heard. WHOA!! The same exact thing happened to me. When I was in high school the class had to write an essay on our hero. I picked Jesus and I was told I can not use Him. But I fought and fought. What sunk their ship is when I said "Jesus is in our social studies book. So even you agree He is a real person who actually existed. So I can write on the strength He is an actual person. And even if you think He's a myth then why would Gilgamesh be allowed not Jesus?" I wouldn't shut up about it so they gave up.

Romans, Jews, Muslims, & Christians all would affirm Jesus as real. That is a consensus view. That is most of the world today also! Jesus existed & anyone denying that is simply wrong.
Unfortunately, the issue is not normally the teacher, but other parents getting up in arms about it, or harassment from your peers. Sometimes it is the teacher directly. Either way, you are on good Historical grounds to say Jesus existed & anyone who denies that fact, not that he is Christ, they should not be allowed to teach anything. It is like saying JFK didn't exist.
I truly desire it saved them, & I hope you touched lives with what you said. That is really what counts, but they have no right, or basis in fact, to deny you to have Jesus as your hero. More media is written about someone acting like Jesus than basically any other character in the USA. Many people have been saying Jesus is great, & they were unaware that it was Jesus.
God bless & keep it up!

@@Captain-Awesome l think that was my point :) we are learning, rediscovering the Word and pursuing Truth. Sometimes in Church many have been going for a long time and are set in false doctrines. my last church attendance believed in pre-trib doctrine and that Jesus was fully God when He was here but not also fully man. The people where lovely but because of their beliefs didn't operate in the gifts of the Holy Spirit but also did not deal with anything from the book of Revelation because they thought that was for those left behind :) the church I attended for 12 years before this had an apostle come from America preaching a mix of prosperity doctrine, New Age and NAR theology, it turned nice people it to prideful money hungry dominionists :( The love for the Truth like sanctification is a process but there are so many weird doctrines creeping in, Hebrew roots, Dominion Theology, Pre trib rapture, Prosperity Gospel....so many things to navigate through and to speak the Truth in Love to. I am not there myself and dont pretend to be but what I do is pursue the Truth and His Love as much as I can. I love channels like this where men of God are searching for Truth and pointing out pitfalls using the Word as evidence not their own opinion. Love Bible Project and Tim Mackie for this reason also. Love people who can dialogue because they are searching for biblical truth and sadly to say that does not always happen in church :(

      How thoroughly have you read?
I'd suggest that you choose a Bible book, such as the gospel of John, or Paul's letter to the Romans, break it into about 3 portions (John can be divided neatly into 3 parts of 7 chapters), and read through the first portion every day for a week or two. Then read the second portion every day for the same length of time, then the third. Keep reading until you find you have a good grasp of what the book is about.
Both of these books cover what the gospel is.
It's important that you ask God to *open your eyes* so that you may see the wonderful truths you are reading. Spiritual things are spiritually discerned, so you need the help of the Holy Spirit.
Read the portion every day at least once. You could do it for a month or two, to really get a handle on it, before moving on to the next portion.
I did this with 1John, and it really opened up my perspective on some things.
If you are truly seeking God, there is no way that He will turn you away.
But you can't be halfhearted about it.

I once listened to a sermon which was heavily inspired by self improvement stuff, as someone who likes self improvement content I could tell, and it was through the lense of some biblical texts, and through the lense of the practicality it has for a Christian, definitely, and it ended on a very biblical note… and yes it was good and useful things… but a good portion of it, probably like half, was just not very bible based. I just felt weird that talk was a sermon. Maybe God wanted to impart exactly those things onto that church for that day, idk, but it felt weird to me. It was good, it was through a Christian lense too, but just not very focused on the bible…

That means that no one on earth can control Him, His word is law and when anyone tries to go against it, they lose. Therefore He is hated with a passion, and plots to kill Him are devised.
This is the case when He lived on the earth, and this is the case now because He still is, and always will be, the Devine authority. Though the Western world was built on Judeo Christian values and therefore became the most free and affluent part of the world, the gratitude of people wanes quickly and humility disappears, and the lust for power inevitably takes over. This is accurate. Now, we cannot say for sure if Satan appeared as a serpent, or as an angelic being, both are possible, and God’s Word leaves it ambiguous for a reason.
I did a detailed study on this. The root word for serpent, is also the same as shining one, which is also the same as the root word for divination, which is the art of trying to uncover that which is hidden. And Satan is behind all of these things. This cannot be a coincidence.

      @ForeclosureGhost Před 4 lety +1

snippletrap - The "serpent" of the garden of Eden is sense consciousness. Jesus mentioned this when he said you must raise the serpent as Moses did in John 3:14-15, to know your savior. Why this is still a mystery to many is interesting, and also, Satan is the "Devil," a state of mind formed by man's personal ideas of his power and completeness and sufficiency apart from God. This was demonstrated in scripture after Jesus was baptized and went to the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil. Satan is the one who makes a man boast, or makes him feel unworthy. I think Satan is better known today as ego. Scripture mentions in many books, like Isaiah 29:13, "They honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me." . Jesus said this also when he taught about our living God who dwells within us. Yet many think he was speaking for himself, when he wasn't.This too is mention in the NT. He taught of who is truly our savior, the eternal One, the self-existing One, our living God within. Jesus taught that. He called him "My Father". Jacob met him at the mount of Piniel, Ezekiel described him, Jeremiah, Enoch, Moses, you name them, they all reflected man and his mind and how he comes to know his God. But, if we want to look outward instead of inward, how will anyone go to heaven when heaven is within? You do know they all taught that, right? Even Jesus. See Luke 17:21. But, what can be witnessed is we all seem to have committed the greatest sin, not knowing our living God within when he commanded to Moses, and mankind "Thou shall have no other gods before me". So, in essence, Christ is buried in the place of the skull until mankind awakens, then the dead in Christ, rise up. Peace be with you.

I agree we need to be educated on the real devil .he is the angel of light and very beautifully convincing. That's why he is such a convincing lier. That is why we pray and trust in jesus alone. He overcame satan on the cross. Not Peter in fact before jesus died he said to peter get behind me satan. Because
Peter tried to stop the will of god for jesus going to Jerusalem. Also the way satan wants to use the mother of jesus. He wants us to worship her to take away worship from jesus because he hates god and jesus is god . I hope someday the catholics would see this in bowing down to pray to dead plaster idol of mary. I feel mary would say wow dont bow to me in prayer and worship that is for my son only. Even the Angel's in heaven are beneath jesus and are not to be worshiped. Only jesus is worthy of all worship honor and glory . Amen

I am hoping this helps me better understand how satan works as my church growing up only taught the LOVE of Jesus Christ and hell or satan was rarely, if ever, mentioned. I believed in him but in a very abstract way and even worse, the only time the Holy Spirit was mentioned was in the Apostle's Creed. I got born again young and backslid but when I surrendered totally to Him, I was ripe for deceptive "churches" and wolves. I thank God that He made sure I was firmly standing on the true Gospel and the teaching of my beloved Grandma. If not for her, I don't know if I'd believe but she grounded me in Him and I gave Him my heart at 8 or 9. I KNOW I was truly saved because I always felt Him all my life and definitely protected as He LITERALLY saved my life at least 5 times. What you said about angels as a substitute for God really got me thinking and it reminded me of something. Believe it or not, there was a journalist who worked for Time Magazine back in 1993 who seems to have grasped this very concept that you explained at the beginning of your sermon. In an article published in 93 they had written of an extremely interesting observation they had begun to take notice of that very year. Within that very article, they wrote
“For those who choke too easily on God and his rules... angels are the handy compromise."
It would seem that even back then in 1993, a secular journalist of a worldly newsmagazine had... consciously or unconsciously... grasped hold of a spiritual truth without even realizing it, the very one that you brought up at the start of your sermon.

Hey Mike I have an honest question what books or resources would you recommend for someone who's been called into the Pastoral Ministry?

    • @MikeWinger
      @MikeWinger  Před 8 lety +2

+Inspiring Theology This is no joke, I recommend reading and rereading the pastoral epistles paying special attention to the character qualifications of elders. It is sad that so many focus more on talent than on character, a mistake that has lead to raising up heretics because of their excellent ability to move a crowd. In addition I would recommend a book on hermeneutics (I think I recall using "Basic Bible Interpretation" by Roy Zuck - though I didn't like his discussion on Typology in the Old Testament). I'd also recommend a great resource called "Self Confrontation" which is a biblical counseling guide. It is fantastic in offering a good application of Biblical truth to various issues that we encounter in counseling and which we ought to address in the scope of teaching. Some good theology books, or at least one, is helpful. I started with Foundations of Pentecostal Theology by Duffield and Van Cleave. And I don't think any new pastors library should be empty of apologetics material. "A Ready Defense" by McDowell is a great resource. "When Critics Ask" by Geisler, is an apologetic resource that specifically deals with attacks on the Bible. I'd also recommend that he not try and read too much into the Greek. More often then not, I hear the Greek being used to mean more than it really does. This is the first thing that strikes you as you study Greek. Surely there are other good resources but all of them will need to be read with a discerning mind because none of them is perfectly correct other than the Bible. But, the greatest of all is a commitment to say only what the Bible says, no more than what the Bible says and no less than what the Bible says and to try and say it with the same heart as the Bible does. The Bible and personal character are the greatest protection from error.

Christians not being able to be possessed is one thing I've wrestled with because I've seen someone very close to me fall into a depression for about a month and at the end of this episode, demons manifested through her speaking through her saying "you can't have her" and things of that nature. She needed to be delivered three different nights that week. She had been a believer and completely devoted to Christ for 15 years or so at that point. She wasn't the only christian I know that went through something similar. Maybe it was just a toxic church or psychological issues, I don't know. Dear Mike,
What makes you think Isa.14:12 is talking about Satan. The proper name "Lucifer" is not used in that verse. The word "hê·lêl" is used in the Hebrew and it means "shining one", describing the king of Babylon in the context of the passage. We got the word, "lucifer" from the Latin translation of the Hebrew word, "hê·lêl". When used in our early English translations (heavily influenced by the Latin Vulgate and Roman Catholic Theology on this issue) , it is not an actual translation of the Hebrew word; but a transliteration from the Latin. Some early theological presuppositions identified the word with Satan and promoted the word to become a proper noun, and alternative name for Satan. The actual word, "lucifer" is never used in the Scriptures.

Those who see you will stare at you
      and ponder over you:
‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble,
      who shook kingdoms,
17 who made the world like a desert
      and overthrew its cities,
who did not let his prisoners go home?’
      (ESV)
Based on the context, I agree with you; I don't think that Isa. 14:12 is referring to Satan.

You are correct that the name Lucifer is Latin and does not appear in the Hebrew. However, the person being referred to is Satan.
Isaiah 14:12-17 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! (13) For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: (14) I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. (15) Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. (16) They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; (17) That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?
As Mike points out in the video, the Hebrew word that is Lucifer in the KJV is a word that means Light-bearer. It is a personal name or title. The king of Babylon is being a type of Satan. That is, the king of Babylon is being used as a symbol for Satan.

I would agree with Theodore Turner. This passage is about Satan, but it is also about the king of Babylon. I think verses 12-14 in that chapter could not possibly refer directly to the king of Babylon, because he would be UNABLE to exalt his throne above the stars of God, he would be UNABLE to sit on the mount of the congregation - which is the location of the heavenly council of the Most High God (YHWH). The king of Babylon is a mere man and cannot be like the most High. He cannot ascend above the heights of the clouds. After all, he is not the rider of the clouds, that's Jesus (Daniel 9, Acts 1).

I don't see what reason there is, given in the scripture, to think that this is talking about Satan. I agree that it is possible; however, without reading my own beliefs *into* the passage, as with Ezekiel 28, I don't see that the *text* indicates that it is speaking about Satan. After all, an earthly king can say in his heart such things (cf. v. 13 ff.).

I'd like to get your response to my reply to Theodore Turner, if I could. I'm trying to find warrant for such a belief *from the text* itself.

Well I would just consider that the idea of fallen angels doesn't make sense. How did sin enter in to heaven? Bible says it never was there. Consider in the book of 2nd Peter that talks about the angels that sinned and were cast down. Consider that the word angel isn't always talking about heavenly Angels but the word also means messenger. Like the way it's used in Revelations. The doctrine of a literally devil also would indicate that angels have free will. Which it's obvious that if that were true why in the world did God create humanity if angels could choose anything? The Bible doesn't indicate that angels can die because they're not under the law of sin and death. Humans die because of this law.

Curiosity. Just like when a parent tells a child not to do something based on trust not explanation, the child ends up doing it.
God did not make us puppets and he gives us free will. Unfortunately, man does not choose wisely. God consistently tells us to seek wisdom.

Isn't it amazing that God established His plan to reconcile us to Him as soon as the fall occured! The genius of God didn't need time to come up with a plan to bring us back to Him.
Imagine a human being when something goes horribly awry. We'd have to sit down, take a deep breath then spend time and resources to come up with a plan! But with God it's instant, which is a testament to the genius of God.

He actually had His plan in place even before that! Revelation talks about the lamb being slain before the foundation of the world, and Ephesians 1 talks about people being elected unto salvation before the foundation of the world too- all of which imply the expectation of sin entering into the world
