  • Fakery, false spirituality and money-grubbing is a multi-million dollar industry. But it's not new. Jesus warned us about these issues in the first century and they just keep coming up again and again. But I don't think we would be wise to limit this warning to an issue that we see in some leaders. We should take seriously the fact that humans seem to have a natural drift from authentic spirituality to impersonated spirituality. From genuine character and godliness to laboring at the appearance of character and godliness. This is something that leaders will probably be tempted with the most but any one of us can fall into. God give us wisdom!
This is part 51 of the Mark Series, going verse by verse through the Gospel of Mark. Today we are in chapter 12:38-44

I have always believed that tithes and offerings, were made according to The Old Testament. In light of today's world the church has turned something that was always voluntary into law. The verse they always use is Malachi 3:8,12. My point is this The Law was always voluntary, not forced. The tithes were the gifts to The Lord that the Law required. To close people in those days paid the priest with the first of their harvest. It was not always money. Today's church has turned it into a monetary system.

We should always pray for our leaders in the church, pastors, etc. They are human and prone to sin, just like the rest of us. The enemy wants to take them down and scatter the sheep. One of my pastors fell in sin and said he got carried away by feeling like a celebrity. It was devastating and it still hurts and it has been 6-7 years since then and even now as I write this I feel a piercing in my heart and I start to cry, as if I am mourning the dead. He was the pastor that lead me in the 'sinners' prayer". First his brother (also a Pastor at the church) fell then he took over the church and also fell. It shook my faith as a young Christian to see it happen twice in the church I attended and I've made a point to not put them on pedestals and to be more intentional about praying for them.

I watched Katherine Kuhlman when I was flipping channels at age 8. I first thought, "This lady can't be real, she's putting on a show" and I would change the channel. Eventually I'd be flipping the channels again and there she'd be. I decided to carefuly watch her every mannerism, her voice, her repetition, her everything to figure her out. After repeated exposure to her, I came to the conclusion unexpectantly that she was truly believing everything she said and was very close to the Lord. Many years later, her biography was written by Jamie Buckingham and I did not read of someone that fleeced the public, as future televangists seem to do. I do trust she was gifted of the Lord and very close to him, but I have no such beliefs of ANY future televangelists, even to this day. She was something special.

@@littleboots9800 my story is somewhat similar, in that I have come back to faith after some 20 years. For the last few months I have been reading the Bible daily and consuming content online. Learning about different views/doctrines. I was born into JW, so I wasn't really aware of the traditional Christian views. Also, I spent the last few years immersing myself in the New Age teachings, and now I am finding Christianity seem to be borrowing from that too. It's tiring trying to find good, engaging teacher with sound doctrine (and one that isn't aggressive towards those with different views). This channel feels like safe oasis. At least for now. I do hope it stays this way.
I am very fortunate to have a job, which seems pretty secure. I thank God daily and pray for other brothers and sisters. Prayer really works if you pray according to God's will. It's amazing to see your prayers answered. Stay strong and keep watching content like this. I agree, it helps immensely.

My grandfather was a sharecropper in south-central Illinois while my dad was growing up, the family rarely had much of anything to their name and constantly moved as one farm after another failed. They were about as poor as you could get. Never had running water nor electricity. My dad remembers looking up from his bed and seeing the sky at night through the holes in the roof.
In one town where they went to church the pastor had everyone contribute to the collection plate. After the service he would take the plate and state that everything that stayed in the air was God's and everything that fell down was his to use as he wanted. While the congregation wore whatever they had, he drove a nice car and always had a nice suit on. He said, "You want your pastor to look nice, don't you?" Obviously this soured my father's perception of religion for a long time. Priestcraft is an abominable evil that has led to countless many from falling away and corruption of how churches' funds have been used.

I find his teaching sound and I appreciate his comments on accountability and pastors who have a stage side and another side. On the topic of mega churches, I know they are able to do tremendous work on a large scale (for example, Chuck Swindoll church in Frisco, TX - they were providing 100s of school backpacks for kids, good thing) but I also feel that the humongous churches don't meet the needs of the folks who don't have as much to put in the offering plate. I personally love a small church where I know everyone's name and can make baby quilts for each new little person because I know them personally. I also feel that smaller churches may be healthier because just getting people in the door to up the numbers is not the goal, but to preach Jesus and Him alone.

Woo Hoo! Way to go, Pastor Mike. :-) Thank you for telling pastors (I am one) to teach their people to know the Word & trust it - not just trust the pulpit. (I have heard some people say some seriously unbiblical things over the years. Thankfully, only a tiny minority) -We are suppossed to do this! Acts 17:11 - Thank you. Keep up the great work & being so humble. Love it! God bless you

    Very good message, Bro. Mike.
    Spot on.
The images you've described among some pastors & church-goers greatly increases the challenges for those who evangelize with the true Word of God in their hearts.
Most atheists, cultists, agnostics, and just plain old sinners & doubters I've met have had their ideas of Christ believers and God's Word tainted by these you've described.
I've changed my approach with the "unsaved" because of the crooked pulpit vultures. Some will not hear The Gospel and we need to understand this. “...many are called, but few are chosen. (Matt.)"
I try to begin conversation with hope. Not my hope, but the unbelievers hope. I might ask, "Do you hope for anything else in life?" or maybe, "Do you wish there was something better beyond this life other than just death?"
So many non-believers are ready to take the offensive side right off the bat. I try to calm that attitude to establish an earnest and kind conversation.
If they misuse or misquote scripture I'll carefully give them the truth as the Bible instructs us. Too often unbelievers parrot what they've heard or read from others and so much of that is like the game 'telephone' - it's way off base from the truth as stated in scripture.
I don't 'keep score's or try to win another gem for my heavenly crown by "winning souls" as so many churches urge members to do. I try to find an opening in someone's train of thought where I can fill in the blanks with The Words of Truth, The Gospel, in a calm loving manner. Hopefully it fills their heart. Maybe not at the moment. Maybe they begin to question what they've believed. Maybe it leads to the person accepting Christ as their Savior.
    Some will choose Christ Jesus.
    Not all.
    Not even the largest percentage.
But those who will need to hear love in our voice and word.
    -----------------------------
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. (Paul the Apostle)

I loved this approach, Mike. I am very thankful for these rich teachings. 📖💦🔥 I was reminded of my moments of weakness when my Biblical knowledge, my language skills, my voice or the guitar in my hand were objects of pride. Moving those tassels never really felt good though, and I am thankful for the shame I felt for being prideful, made it easier to repent quickly. Today, I am thankful for the gifts I am blessed with and try to humbly submit them and use them for the benefit of the church. Soli Deo gloria. 🙌🙌

Thanks Mike. I went to a bible study group once where the prayers were so long and drawn out and repetitive by one particular person leading that it became impossible to focus, and there was no time left for anyone else to pray . It was annoying but I didn't really think if it as "showing off" (for want of a better word) until just now listening to you. Only 22 mins and will carry on listening.

The problem with our modern , online , media based culture is that it is audience driven . That means the more people you attract the more Money you make . Unfortunately this culture Can also infiltrate the Christian church , and we must be extremely careful in our discernement with this issue . At the same time we know that God judges our inner motivations , and he alone sees and knows personally all those millions of faithful Christians in the US and in the World who love and follow Jesus Christ , away from the glare of the media and sometimes in very difficult circumstances and with very little financial support . I love that verse from Samuel : " Man judges by the external appearance , but God sees the heart' ......

  • @josedopwell9645
    @josedopwell9645 Před 3 lety +15

"HOW DO I APPLY IT ?" Yep. It's a "Let's cut to the chase" mindset. Impatience causes us to miss the scriptural nuances. As far as the "prominent churches" you alluded to, what is exalted by men is an abomination to the Lord (Luke 16:15). Large attendance, growth for the sake of growth and accomplishing someone's vision is too often a worldly, commercial way Christian leaders look at things. It can be about one's reputation and name before men rather than the name of Jesus Christ. Supposedly numbers = success. But if that were the case with Jesus his earthly ministry would've been regarded as a statistical failure. For example with all the thousands upon thousands of people he fed, only 120 people were in the upper room for the day of Pentecost. Thank you for the clear teaching on priests. Too many people put pastors on pedestals like they're hyper-spiritual, when we are all brethren who are equals in the sight of the Father. Don't get me started on those who assign themselves the title of prophets or apostles. Prophets who make excuses when their "prophecies" fail. Apostles who haven't endured the 40 lashes minus one --- five times !! Or been stoned by a mob to the point of being left for dead. Or shipwrecked. Etc. As Paul humbly and "madly" wrote of himself in response to false apostles.
