I was but my daughter is biracial and has super curly hair (Shirley temple curls) but it’s soft like mine. I of course tried so many for her hair but a friend suggested Diva Curl and it was amazing! I’ve been using on her since she was 3. She is 8 now. It was amazing for years- people stop if daily to comment and ask about her hair. Well last 2 years I’ve noticed tons of breakage and dryness. There are clumps if hair in my hands when I wash it which is at the most 2 times a week. I am so livid because I chose this for her! Shame on them

Yep, I experienced major hair loss, hair thinning, itchiness, dryness, etc. I was angry and upset at the brand before, but this is just disrespectful, childish, and rude to hear from a brand that is in denial that their quality and reputation went down the drain. Expected way better quality in terms of products and press management. Couldn't be more disappointed and disgusted in a brand if I tried.
It changed my curl pattern my scalp was always itchy and on fire ad I lost hair....inused the for over 9 years...

Hi Kenna- I’m wondering if you would be able to make a video on the “think dirty” app (which analyzes the long term effects that cosmetics can have on a person) and discuss the accuracy of it?

I think that app is not that accurate. It gave even Olaplex an 8 (very bad/dirty) so Idk what is “clean” to them. Almost everything is 8🤦🏼♀️
@@missoriginality7965 I agree. It gave Curlsmith an 8 as well because it has fragrance lol. I get that some people cannot handle fragrance but the majority of the population does not have major issues with fragrance, myself included. So, pretty much everything in that app will come up as "dirty" because just about everything has fragrance.
@F Powell I wouldn't put my faith in Netflix documentaries, unfortunately. I have noticed that most of them are incredibly biased and do not actually provide facts, but rather theories and convincingly present them as facts. Just because a company isn't required to disclose fragrance ingredients doesn't automatically mean those ingredients must be "toxic". It could literally just be to protect a "secret ingredient" just as a sus chef would protect the identity of an ingredient in a signature sauce. We dont know, but just because we dont know doesn't make it bad.
And don't get me wrong I love the idea of "clean beauty" because i love nature and all things natural lol, but i dont think it's right to push people to fear all things that aren't labeled as "clean".
I’m a bit iffy about it because I think they go ingredient by ingredient instead of looking at the whole ingredient list and seeing how the ingredients work with each other. I think they automatically give it a bad mark if there’s any ingredient with any (possible) side effect. An example is retinoids or retinol; it’s a really cool ingredient that has many skin benefits but you have to build up your skins resistance to it by using it once a week and then eventually usining it every other day or so and only applying it at night time as it may cause skin sensitivity. Since it has a “health” warning they marked down the whole product.
Well the first mistake was charging $30 for ONE product. That’s a no from me 🤦🏻♀️
Around the time that people first started seeing the damage, devacurl was I think sold or the owner stepped down or something like that. That change in ownership/management could have lead to change in suppliers. This video makes so much sense. Thank you Kenna!
No. There was always damage such as this. From the beginning, it's not the packaging, or the adulterated. I have worked there, almost from the beginning and I've seen this happen since then. I just think as it's become more "popular" the percentages have changed. In regard, to Kenna saying they "had" a 90% consumer rating. That's still 10% unsatisfied. And.... That was then.

@@Skizzle9295 but they use essential oils which Kenna said can be easily compromised since beauty products aren't regulated that heavily. So sadly the Not your mothers products could have the same toxic results😭
If not curl talk I highly recommend Shea moisture. Been using them for years. I only use the curl talk gel and cream but shampoo and conditioner and deep treatments I go with SM!!

susanne anique, it’s not a childhood issue. Curly hair and dealing with products is an everyday issue.
Obviously many curly heads are bitter myself included for the crap they have to deal for not having straight hair.

All these info about adulterated products is making me nervous, we need to be very aware of what brands are doing, specially nowadays that everyone and their aunties can launch their skincare/beauty brands. Knowledge is power!
Additional, the US has a very old regulation system for cosmetics that desperately needs an update. It's much stricter here in Europe and I'm very glad about it. Obviously things can still go wrong sometimes but it makes it harder for companies to cut corners and easier to hold them accountable.
I study pharmaceutical chemistry and when I studied adulteration I was shocked
I think it's interesting that she mentions that the brands themselves don't even know and it's the manufacturers/suppliers that are not able to meet demands, so they mix in these supplements that don't physically show any differences, but chemically are potentially dangerous. I think moreso, we should try avoiding/be aware of these overhyped ingredients or fad buzzword ingredients because that means every company wants to use it or every company wants to advertise it.
I feel sad because I just bought a devacurl mask. :( now I'm too scared to use it, and it was $50
@@TnyNS yes you're so right. And especially when it's an ingredient that is usually expensive but the product isn't. Whenever I see those cheap products that claim to have all these exotic oils and butters and essential oils etc. I know it's a) prob just a tiny amount in there and b) low quality stuff. You can't sell a conditioner for 3 bucks and put a significant amount of high quality "fancy" ingredients in there.

I used only deva for two years and recently My hair has become so thin and patchy. I’m have gone from proud of my curls to ashamed of my hair and the terrible state of it.

Emily G it’s so sad hearing this from so many women. I’m hoping that once all the current damaged hair is cut/repaired everyone’s hair will return to its former glory. Meanwhile, if it were me, I would try all conditioners (after reading labels) aloe Vera, coconut oil, aphogee, etc. May not help but shouldn’t make things worse.
In that two year, you didn’t noticed anything wrong with your hair to stop using the products??
missMercieCouture it happens over time.. for example, sometimes you don’t realize your hair becoming more frizzy because you can use more product to cover the problem
missMercieCouture It happened over time and was going to a Deva stylist for hair cuts. I would go in and say I was having scalp issues and hair falling out in large amounts. This woman cut other people in my family’s hair and I trusted her. She would just say I was washing my hair wrong. I needed to wash out all the product or I needed to let it sit in my hair longer or I wasn’t massaging it in enough. As far as the breakage she would blame it on me wearing ponytails and high buns. She would say I need to wash my hair more often and with more of the shampoo. Because it happened gradually I didn’t think it was the products. I had been having hormonal issues and thought that was the cause of the hair loss (it continued after I got my hormones stabilized) I thought my scalp issues were because of me not washing my hair enough (the itching and rash/skin irritation still happened when I washed my hair everyday).
Watching Kenna try not to get sued by Devacurl for 23 minutes straight lol... "I'm not saying this is true but..." *wink wink*

the testing she mentioned is specifically for ingredients BEFORE they go in to manufacturing the final product
Because this would require huge amounts of expensive testing, like she said in the video
That is not an option in this situation if you understand what is being said. The ingredients would need to be tested straight from supplier, prior to being added to the finished product, and even if she could obtain the ingredients at that level, which she couldn't, she would have to pay ridiculous costs most individuals could pay if she was even given the access to those tests, which she probably would not have. It's not grab a sample of unadded ingredients and just sent to a lab for private testing. That is not this situation.

Alexis Crawford sorry to ask but around when did this happen to you? I used deva curl for a year and my hair kept falling out this was 2017-2018. I wonder if it’s unrelated to the products but now I’m really not sure!
@@Creamy_Goodness why do you assume that those categories are made up to sell products? To me it seems to be the same as hair levels (numbers showing how light or dark someone's hair is, if you are not familiar). It just adds preciseness to someone saying their hair is 'super curly'.
I wish there was a no fuss no muss haircare line similar to Cerave. Almost every curl friendly product has essential oils and fragrances which you said will cause balding and all these crazy things😭😭

@@jazwhoaskedforthis So I did some google searching and it turns out Vanicream has a haircare line! Dr. Dray always raves about their skincare and compares them to Cerave so maybe there is hope. I'll try them out after I finish my current products.
What about shea moisture? I believe they have products that are natural without fragrances or essential oils
@@pearlsandbows23 Most shea moisture has essential oil blends and fragrance. What's more important is making sure what hits your scalp is avoiding those ingredients where possible. If something is only going on the middle/end parts of your hair, the only thing you should worry about is if you have sensitive skin and your hair touches your skin a lot. Aside from that, the only thing we can speculate on is adulteration of the ingredients.

Thank you for offering a balanced perspective on this issue. I am one of those having issues. I had used DC for a couple of years and didn't start having problems until I had to replace my "stash" in early 2019. After a couple of months, I noticed intense itching and I lost a TON of hair and stopped using their products in late summer. DC says they didn't reformulate and they may not have. Given that they have been through a couple of different owners and up until a month ago were owned by a venture capital firm, my guess is that they undertook some cost-cutting measures and are using lesser quality ingredients. As you state, without in-depth testing, we don't know. In any case, my hair and scalp are finally starting to get better, although I did have to "big chop" again to get rid of as much damage as I could. Thanks for providing this information, it's good to see your perspective.
I was using the no poo, the conditioner, styling creme, & styling gel at the same time I stopped coloring my hair and I was growing out my hair. I noticed my hair texture was changing a lot, it went from naturally curly to flat loose curls with fried out frizz. I also got a rash on the palm of my hand where I'd squeeze out their styling cream & hair gel. I had to see a dermatologist for these scabs on my scalp, and was prescribed a steroid cream for the REALLY itchy blisters I got on the palm of my hand. It's ALL making sense now. THIS is really upsetting.

@@jazwhoaskedforthis I'm saving all the photos. I still have the prescription steroid cream I was given for the rash on the palm of my hand. That rash was only on the ONE hand where I would squeeze out the products to apply to my hair....I honestly didn't know this was the issue THIS whole time. I have over 20 months of new hair growth using those products. Since I stopped coloring my hair, and was growing it out I thought my hair texture was changing and hated it- my curls are getting so loose, dry & frizzy. It's irritating to say the least 😒

I was using the no poo and conditioner religiously for 4 years. Blind to the fact it was that that was causing my curl decline. not humidity, the water, or my hormones. Im shocked and crushed, i was trying to grow my hair as well. I havent had any growth in about 1.5 years. i started using devacurl after i got it from a curly hairstylist after my big chop😓
"Industry standard." Remember when they would say the same thing when directions for shampoo were, "wash, rinse, repeat"? As soon as someone called them out on it they ditched it. I hope the same thing happens here. DevaCurl has a lot of explaining to do.

Maybe industry standards need to step up, I think especially when you mention how adulteration has gotten really advanced. Otherwise this might start happening more often. If this is what is happening, yknow. Allegedly.
Your channel is so very interesting! I love all the information you present to us. It is surprising to me that these product ingredients that are in contact with our scalp and skin are not currently regulated by the FDA. I think your theory makes a lot of sense. I had been using DevaCurl products (No Poo, One Condition, Styling Cream, Gel, Oil, Mister Right, Deep Condition) for years and years and in the last couple I started experiencing thinning hair. I never even considered it might be DC products. I went to doctors and took supplements, etc. I stopped my Madison Reed which has ethanolamine and I stopped the DC products 3 months ago and I am getting new growth now. All I know for certain is that my hair loss pattern seems very similar to many other women who have used these products. Losing hair is very overwhelming and awful. I hope they find the common reason for why so many women are having these similar experiences.
Yes a million times! I have a feeling that this is not just DevaCurl related! I had very similar symptoms after a couple uses of a different brand's curl "no poo" product! I said in another comment that something very similar to what Kenna is describing happened in the skincare community. A preservative with the brand name Euro-NApre was found to have cyanide and silver in it and a bunch of skincare brands were using that preservative in their products! So it wasn't brand specific, it was the supplier providing all these different brands with the same ingredient that was the issue! And I'm worried that may be the case here as well.

Personally- I have been using the no poo line of shampoo and conditioner the most- a hair mask and the buildup buster for a few years now and within the last year or so I have noticed a dramatic change in my curl pattern. I’ve had much more frizz and more hair fallout and my curls are more relaxed. I also have PCOS and just figured this was yet another symptom of my condition but realized a few weeks ago I wasn’t the only one going through all this as well as the irritated, itchy, flakey burning scalp problems too. (Which is embarrassing in and of itself) I’ve since stopped using deva curl products and am looking for new products and hoping my hair journey and everyone else’s experiencing this will thrive and flourish with all the knowledge and support we’ve been getting about everything. 💖💇🏻♀️💆🏼♀️
Interesting. It’s like when you buy an essential oil off of Amazon thinking it’s 100% that oil but when you get it it’s clearly cut with mineral oil, jojoba oil or some other carrier oil. That’s why the price is so cheap. No way are you getting the same benefits and depending on what oil they are using it could cause issue. Makes sense as far as DevaCurl since they are loaded with essential oils. Thank you for this video. Very informative!
Oh shit they do that? I've been using Amazon for facial oils for years. Is there anyway to tell if it's not 100%?
@@daniellelopez3342 not at home, you have to buy from a trusted brand and still you can never be 100% sure. (I also buy essential oils from amazon so I won't tell you it's wrong, just be careful about prices being too low and if they are doing something harmful to your skin!)
Danielle Lopez most essential oils have to put in a carrier oil to be safe to use on the skin. They can be too concentrated and harsh. Research each oil you want to use and see where they are native from and order those - less hands they pass through the better. 💗
Even in esthetics school they give u a list of pore clogging ingredients and they recommend fragrance free shampoo conditioner aka vanicream this reminds me of chaz dean wen

In canada cliniderm is supposed to be like vanicream but the shampoo smells like essential oils.
Interesting video! I’m a relatively new DevaCurl user - I started using NoPoo Decadence shampoo and conditioner, and the coconut curl styler last August. No problems for me. Based on Dr. Dray’s very recent video on NoPoo I’ve started (just today) to use a regular shampoo once every 2 weeks. I’m inclined to keep using the products I’ve got, but likely won’t buy more from the brand until this is sorted out.

I had subscribed to you not too long ago and realized that I haven’t been getting notifications. I’m lucky to have seen this. I appreciate how knowledgeable and intelligent you are, as well as your ability to explain things clearly and in a way that’s understandable. I’ve actually been using shampoo bars for years now and my hair has never been healthier than it is now. My heart goes out to those having these troubles and hope that everything gets sorted out soon.

What shampoo bars do you use?
susancnw59 I rotate between quite a few. The ones I’m currently using are from indie shops on Etsy. From the shop UnconditionalLovebyC...the Carrot Bar, Chocolate Bar, and Avocado Bar. From GrouchyOwlSoaps the Uber Moisturizing Ayurvedic Argan Bar (love it!). From AureliaNatural the Ayurvedic Amla + Neem + Fenugreek + Banana Bar. From FreshAsaDaisySoaps the Beer Shampoo Bar with Oatstraw, Horsetail, & Nettle - and Argan Oil (love!). From naturalviolet the Basil Beer Bar. From GentleHomadeSoap the Kachur Sugandhi Bar. From SEAandCLEAN a variety of their samples. They offer many different bars and you can purchase sample sizes which are nice. When I first transitioned to the bars there was an amazing shop called Marcella Herbal. A while ago the shop just closed without warning and hasn’t reopened. It’s a shame because they were top shelf quality. I know that sounds like a lot, but they last forever and it’s nice to use what I feel my hair needs at the moment.

I used devacurl for a couple months and my scalp had never been itchier and my hair had never been drier. At first I was blinded by the hype of devacurl and thought my hair was just transitioning-I’m only just now putting it all together. I hope all the victims get answers and devacurl gets recalled.

Dude you are such an important channel on this platform. It’s nice to hear testimonials, but actually learning about the scientific or chemical aspects of the cosmetics industry is incredibly useful.

Thank you for sharing this! Another big thing people over look is where they purchase their products. If it’s not sold through a salon or reputable distributor then the product is never a guarantee. As a licensed cosmetologist and as someone with wavy-curly hair deva curl was never a line that worked the way I wanted it. Generally I never use all products from the same company. There are so many great brands that work for curly hair. The biggest thing is people don’t understand what their hair needs. Which ultimately determines what products to use. A lot of it with curly hair is trial and error. Brands that I have found that work the best with curly hair are Pureology, Ouidad, IGK, Surface, Sebastian, Paul Mitchell, Redken, Amika, Bouclème, Kinky-Curly, And Shea Moisture.
I am so glad that your channel exists. We need more educated people in the beauty industry. People who care about the science behind and ethical implications of their decisions. Thank you for applying your knowledge to the beauty community!
Yup. The first I saw of adulteration was in the very lucrative oilve oil industry. Even now, I read that the vast majority of the products sold as “olive oil” are not made out of 100% olives.
I've never been happier to have been too broke to afford ANY of their products.

Such an enlightening video! Thank you so much.... Now I'm a new subscriber 😌however, you didn't touch on the fact that we DevaCurl users used the styling products as well, and experienced hair loss, balding, severe breakage and more. I for one was not a nopoo user. I did use the regular shampoo cleanser and conditioner, fosm and cream and gel stylers. Now my hair density is severely thin and balging around the temples.

Thank you for this video. I’ve been dealing with issues from using DevaCurl and it’s devastating. Listening and learning from your experience in the industry is so so helpful 🖤 I was using the Low Poo, One Condition, Wavemaker and BLeave In products once a week when I would wash my hair. About 1-2 times a month I’d use the buildup buster as well. I used these products for about 2.5 years and stopped using them 2 months ago when I realized my hair was thinning, my scalp was really sensitive and my hair just looked and felt fried. My waves/curls also were almost limp looking and I noticed that my roots would get greasy really quickly. All odd things because I have thick hair and I’ve never had a sensitive or oily scalp. My hair is naturally on the dry side (common with curly hair), but never felt fried. It also was weird because when I started using DC, my hair responded SO well to their products. My hair honestly never looked or felt better, so I continued using them even though they are expensive. Since I stopped using DC 2 months ago, my scalp is no longer sensitive and I’m working on getting the health of my hair back! It’s a work in progress, but I’m thankful I stumbled across this whole situation and was able to find an answer to the issues I was having.

even as someone with straight hair i'm glad i watched this! it brought up a lot of issues i'd never even thought of like adulteration. it's so easy to just be trusting about the things we buy and use on our bodies but we definitely need to be more informed about how the industry works. i'm in australia and sometimes the things i hear about how ineffective the fda is in the us are really scary but i tend to believe it's not as big an issue in oz just bc we have stricter regulations on a lot of things. this made me realise that i really should have a better understanding of these things. thanks!
As a hairstylist I am following this scandal and really appreciate your input. I love how you can explain products to me from a different perspective than my own. I have a tendency to see products for what results I can see and create in the salon, not the chemistry of the products or the development behind them. I have never worked with diva curl in the salon but will steer clients away from the product line at least until this whole thing is resolved. Keep up the educational content, I love it!

Now I am taking more time to research hair companies n products before I try any. I would have gone straight to Diva Curl because I’m familiar with the work and previous hair products from Loraine Massy. I used them in the late 80’s & 90’s with great results. If not for all the internet posts of the problems and they starting after she sold Diva Curl, I might have been one of the people who had problems. I can relate to their devastation.
Thank you for your professional take on this. I also don't think deva is doing anything wrongfully on purpose but I think it's not ok, when a company refuses to look into an issue and just tells their customers everything is ok when clearly it is not. It's been my suspicion the whole time that some of their raw ingredients might have been compromised or cut and they are just not aware of it. Also the company was sold twice recently so it's absolutely reasonable to assume, they might have switched suppliers for some ingredients.
Beeing a soap maker myself, I know that especially "natural" ingredients vary extremely in quality from supplier to supplier. And it's even worse with fragrances because they are so complex and consist of so many different components.
I can make two soaps with identical ingredients but from different sources and end up with completely different products.
I am wondering on the Think Dirty app. Do you think it is a reliable source to use to figure out which products to get? From what you described at least for essential oils if it cost so much money to test I doubt the Think Diry app would do it. Do u think it is better than nothing?

Really loved your video. An issue I’m seeing with a lot of these professionals giving their opinion on the matter is that they aren’t doing enough research on the curly girl method which is what a majority of us follow. Most of us are highly knowledgeable with these products and our hair because it’s all fairly complicated. The goal is to have balanced hair between protein and moisture. We monitor our hair to make sure it’s not getting too much of either. Avoiding buildup is important too. So people that follow no poo still use a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup on the scalp and hair. It’s actually devacurls low poo and buildup buster that irritated my scalp like crazy, but at the time I didn’t think anything of it since any new product can be irritating. But for the professionals to act like the issue comes from them all having dirty scalps is what’s really upsetting.
I used to think I was only affected by artificial fragrance but recently switched from shampoo with essential oils to totally fragrance free and my scalp is much less itchy/irritated so this totally makes sense. Thank you!

I'm so glad you made this video. I'm lost here and my scalp literally hurts from build-up, itching, eczema, and hair loss from using Deva Curl consistently since 2016. My hair has thinned so much and I stopped using the products last week. The itching had gotten a little better but the healing has just begun.
Edited at the end of the video: I use the No-poo line to include the mouse, co- wash, shampoo, conditioner, curling cream, and gels. The skin on my neck and face itches when my hair touches it. I was given a prescription for contact dermatitis and a scalp treatment from a physician to include treatment for acute eczema, rash, swelling, and to relieve the itching. My children have also used the products (gels, shampoos and conditioners) and have had prescription shampoos since the middle of last year as well as an antibacterial scalp prescription (We couldn't determine what was causing the problem at the time) Since then the itching has stopped for them but they have to stay on the regimen to prevent dandruff coming back. 😕

Unfortunately it's a really difficult lesson to learn and will take years to fully heal if it even will. My curls were beautiful! I stil have curl but loose and no volume and so so thin. I haven't found anyone recommending what to do to help my hair now that it's in this state so I've deep conditioned it, clarified it, and put a different curl cream in it. I don't even wear it down because it just looks a mess and makes me sad. Thank you so much for your compassion and listening to my sob story! 💞

Thank you for shedding some light on what could possibly be the problem, I watched the two videos from Ayesha and she presented complaints, and left me with questions like “ok, but what’s wrong with the product?”
I just recently bought their hair mask product, and I used it twice within two weeks my hair feels soft, it’s so shiny, I even got to day three of no wash, and that’s something I’ve never been able to do because my hair gets too oily and flat by the next day.
The only new product I can credit this too is the devacurl mask. So it’s hard to hear all these stories but none state an actual product cause or suspicion.

Mojo Jaye there’s a group on fb called adrenal fatigue and thyroid care. I’m still learning about my thyroid issues/pcos and they provide a tonnnn of info. It’s one of those groups where u lurk for months before commenting bc everyone seems so educated on the topic and I don’t even know where to begin! Most docs don’t correctly test so ppl stay sick longer than necessary and the group helped me to understand exactly what to ask for in regard to my bloodwork. It might help u bc I find the topic completely overwhelming.

I would love to see a video done by a biochemist, dermatologist, hair stylist together. There are ingredients, techniques that effect both the hair shaft and scalp (skin).
The only product of theirs I ever liked was the melt into moisture mask, everything else made my hair dry and frizzy and my scalp always seemed to itch.

I feel so bad for the women experiencing this. Personally I've lost 3/4th of my hair from hormonal imbalances and scalp eczema, and still have been unable to get any of it back, but knowing that its all because of a PRODUCT?! I'd be even madder, as that company could have prevented it. Horrible. Also if anyone's looking for fragrance free CG shampoos, Jessicurls has great no fragrance options for their shampoos and is CG approved! ACURE also has a Mega moisture shampoo that's not bad, but jessicurls has a ton of no fragrance options, ingredient wise the Jessicurl Gentle Lather Shampoo fragrance free version seems amazing :)!
kurochi chan I’m so sorry! I went through it because of using deva curl and ended up doing the big chop, I didn’t want to but I had to. To help with growth I’ve been doing rice water and it is working for me. Maybe it’d help you too 🤷🏻♀️
I used DevaCurl is 2016 when I started my natural hair journey because it seemed like the go-to from everybody. For me it made my hair feel and look great ( but that could also be attributed to me stopping using heat treatments and bleach in my hair). All the products I tried from DevaCurl I used probably only one bottle though because if was too expensive for me to buy more so I switched to cheaper products. The only product I constantly have repurchased was the Mist-er Right Dream Curl Refresher because it was the best product I found to actually "re-curl" on non-wash days without being too heavy for my hair. I loved this product so much! Recently though (in about the past year) I felt like it just wasn't working as well, but I really couldn't confirm it. I haven't noticed my hair thinning or changing texture like other have, but this is the only DevaCurl product I use, and I only use it about twice a week. After hearing everyone's testimonies though I am concerned to use it, so I probably will not.
Thank you! This actually makes sense! Personally I never thought they were trying to do anything to try to make people's hair fall out. As for the quiz you took I dont think it's too unusual for the same products to be recommended because Deva is pretty concentrated on how you style and use them while styling instead of the items themselves

I commented on Aysha’s video saying that I believe they did the same thing as dominicans ‘ salons. Dominicans salons often put a form of « relaxer » in their products so that the hair becomes straight overtime. I am suprised nobody thought about it because honestly that is the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the way those girls were losing their curls....

Hey Kenna, I totally agree with what you are saying. I am an engineer in the cosmetic field in Europe. I don't know how this is handled in the US, but in Germany, the additives in base products used for a product don't have to be declared in the ingredients list. So i could imagine that they changed a supplier and/or the required quality of the ingredient. So a different molecule could have been introduced into the formulation that destabilises it and reacts with the other ingredients. This might be a slow reaction so the change isn't apparent during or right after production. I've seen this happen when the suppliers were changed for a product and a long duration stability test was conducted.
I had the worst breakout of my life the one time I tried the gel, and I’m still dealing with dandruff from using the original shampoo and conditioner for years. My hair got thinner as well but I think that has gotten better in time. I thought it was either hard water or my diet somehow causing it.
Aisha has since posted anothe video and her symptoms are even more severe than what she first stated. It’s so heartbreaking 💔 this situation is appalling and frightening. My hair has also basically turned straight. Luckily I didn’t use the hair very often
I’ve used DevaCurl exclusively 2018-2020 and used it 2014-2015; shampoo, conditioner and 2-3 styling of DC products. I regularly cleansed with a cleansing shampoo.
The last two years I’ve noticed massive hair loss and thinning around my face hair line. I used to have tight curls. Now it’s thin, irregular curl spotty curl pattern and extra frizzy. I was noticing my hair looked limp and had barely wavy; which was a former spiral curls. Breakouts at the base of my neck near the hairline.
I have to say, I have pin straight hair, but I wept at some of the Deva Curl pictures. I greatly admire women with curly hair. My husband has curly hair, and I know the work that goes into it. My long hair began to fall out after a medical treatment, and now is starting to grow back. Our hair is so personal to us, a way we express ourselves, and all these people were paying for good products to care for their hair properly, and have suffered terribly because of it. This was a very important video for all of us. Pay attention to how products of any type affect you, and trust your instincts if you feel something is wrong. I wish everyone a complete recovery! 12:30 she addresses this. I agree with her. Plastic leaching wouldn't cause this much of an effect so quickly. More likely it is an adulterated ingredient causing this. Probably they changed supplier's of ingredients.
Since I left my comment I found new evidence that DevaCurl worked with a third party fulfillment company that helped them cut costs on packaging at the same time these issues seem to have began. If you get time to watch and respond and read the brief case study by Dotcom that is in the description, that would be great! Someone suggested they may have not stability tested the new materials with the formula. Love - Stephanie

I use to want a devacut SO bad! When you get the cut typically they use all devacurl products. I could never afford it though.

I would suggest a certified Ouidad stylist, if you are looking for an expert in cutting curly hair.
I did get a devacut after the controversy. She did use devacurl products on me but I rotate my products and dont use DC products so I had no issues thankfully.
700 clients, 5 years as a curl specialist, no problems at all. I use the products, still do, and my Mom and sister as well, and we will continue. But I personalize everyone's products, a computer program on a website cannot do that obviously, there are too many variables :-). Most love it, some don't, but no reactions or problems. I do not use the full line, but use select products that I believe won't lead to build up issues, etc. And I always counsel my clients on protein overload and recommend limited protein in products. I do not use the decadence line or the creams, or any of the new products that have come out in the past few years. Thank you for your logical and sensible video!

I've been a stylist for 34 yrs. Unforntunately the beauty industry does not have the strictest standards. We as consumers need to demand better testing and higher standards for all our beauty products. My heart breaks for the people suffering from this. Monat had similar issues, but not much was done for people other than a basic excuse and a new bottle of shampoo.The adulterated products definitley rings a bell as to something that could be the problem. We need to stand together and demand better for our bodies!

You mean that an essential oil can be sold to me as 100 percent of 1 essential oil and actually be diluted 😱😱😱 I stopped using essential oils for good about a year ago now as I noticed that when I stopped using them as part of a hair challenge my hair looked thicker, more glad that I am not using them any more 💕
I checked the ingredients list on my deep conditioner against a list of known formaldehyde aliases and formaldehyde producing chemicals

Sure enough "diazolidinyl urea" was right in there.
Since formaldehyde is a known hair straightener and causes all sorts of other problems, I cannot look past it as a potential cause of the damage people are experiencing.
I’ve been concerned about the amount of essential oils & other fragrance compounds in DC and most high-end products. I’m a practicing aromatherapist for 22 years and too many people ignore all reason and safety precautions because “it’s natural so it must be good and more is better.’ When I mentioned that possibility to Stephanie “Curl Ninja,” she deleted my comments on YT & FB and never addressed that it could be a real sensitization problem over time. Instead she’s going on about every wild conspiracy theory her readers send her. I think her mission is a good one, but damn, people are now blaming DC for every ill they have. “Deva Curl causes cancer” is coming soon. Watch. Conspiracies rapidly get out of control with social media mass panic.

I've been using DevaCurl lopoo and nopoo for over ten years without any symptoms or loss of hair! My friends still compliment me on my 'curls' and I'm 69 years old. Washing hair 3/week!
My sister uses their products and loves them. When she's on a budget she can't afford all of them, so she switches it up. I think that's what made her experience positive. She uses a mix. In moderation, her curls are so soft and defined! I can always tell when she's used it.
i wonder if whatever their issue is, it's the same as what's plaguing Monat. i remember a long time ago i heard about Herbal Essences supposedly causing hair thinning and loss. not sure if anything ever came of that. however, i have noticed that some Herbal Essences formulas contain glycolic acid, which seemed weird to me. wouldn't this kind AHA be too harsh for the scalp and maybe make it prone to sunburn? i know salicylic acid is sometimes used for dandruff, but that works differently...

I feel like aha might be pretty diluted and washed off relatively quickly, so I’m not sure how much damage it could do. I also feel like I see people use acidic rinses to close their hair cuticle so it might be something like that? I’m totally guessing though, I have no idea.
I use salicil acid face cream for acne and my dermatologist said not to use it for too long. For exapmle, I’ll use it 10-15days and then take a break 2-3 weeks. I can feel, if I use it more often, that it burns my face so I wouldn’t use it on my scalp every week...

I have scalp acne issues (allergy tests show nothing, I rinse well, use quality products, etc, not much works) so I’ve been considering using a glycolic acid shampoo to help cell turnover and maybe get a reset. But just like any AHA, it can’t be used everyday. I think she’s right about adulterated ingredients in this product. We play way too loosy-goosy with essential oils and their use. I’m not about over regulation, but it’s time for industry standards.

The industry probably does need to be a little more regulated. I worked for 4 years where we made shampoo, and conditioner for a small business. We made it in a kinda dirty warehouse, and our equipment and setup definitely didn’t look as professional as you would want it to be. We cleaned everything but only with soap and water, and if something (a bug, metal shavings, etc) got into the batch we just scooped it out and used the rest. There were batches we made sometimes that didn’t seem good, we didn’t really test them, just bottled them up and sent them out. Places that manufacture any body hygiene products should have inspections and some way of knowing their ingredients are safe.
It’s weird, I have been experiencing hair loss and scalp issues for the last year or so. I only use a couple of the Deva styling products and I only use them sometimes, so when this whole thing started I didn’t think it applied. But now I’m starting to wonder.
I will say that I don’t feel like my curl pattern had been damaged. I just have a lot less hair than I used to, and a flaky/itchy/achy scalp.
Shaye Eller I am in the same boat as you and as soon as I cute Devacurl out of my routine my hair quickly revived and I stopped having such an itchy dry scalp and my shedding reduced drastically. My hair is softer shiner and just overall more healthy.

gnanford nope. I sometimes use(d) the Wavemaker and the Frizz Free Volumizing Foam.
I’ve tried the detangler but it didn’t work for me...I ended up using the bottle up as shaving lotion. 🤣 I had noticed years ago that the Build-Up Buster would give me mad dandruff if I actually used it on my scalp, but it didn’t if I only used it on the length of my hair so I figured it was a contact allergy. I’d long since stopped using that one by the time I noticed my hair loss though.
