Direct audio interface recording is pretty convenient when living in an apartment or with room mates. Thanks for making this!
This is one of the best "how to" videos out there when it comes to audio interfaces. 👏 I don't know why it doesn't have more likes and views!
Let's help change that
this has now my like
Great video! The reason I searched this is because I wanted to record "Waiting on the World" after I learned all the little licks between chords and looped it to play the solo over. At 4:11 I thought my looper pedal was having a mind of its own for a quick second haha. What a coincidence. Great video and song choice!
Thanks for the video! Just started learning how to work with audio interface and your vid is so helpful!
Thank you for making such a clean straightforward tutorial. I had watched lots of other videos and this was far and away the best I felt like I knew exactly what I needed to do thanks to you.
Brilliant piece of tuition, thank you, i now understand, i need things to be explained simply and this is the first youtube video that Ive understoodr...Subscribed
appreciate you beyond words; this is the perfect breakdown!
You're such a great and gentle man to learn from. Thankyou for this video!
Excellent video - you've been a great help to me setting up my Focusrite. Thank you .
The perfect video for me. It answers all the questions i have.
Thank you very much.
Awesome video, well explained. Thank you. Also great channel name 👍
MUCH THANKS for your helpful advice! Cheers
thanks! dirk nowitzki for helping us! god bless you
Thanks man, appreciate the video !
great detailed explanation thank you
Excellent video simple and to the point 👍 thank you for making this video
Great video, it helps me. Tqvm 🙏🏻
My goodness... In just one minute of this video, I've learned two things I should have known so long ago. I feel ridiculous for not knowing them before. Thank you.
Drawbacks
1. Directly into audio interface: You have to use VSTs - some are quite expensive (some are free though) and CPU heavy. you need to load IRs (cab sims) for it to sound good)
2. Rec out amp -> Audio Interface: check out specs on your amp or amp you are about to buy - often the signal is mono and/or equipped with rubbish cab sim. Hence, your recordings will be inferior (compared to studio-grade stuff) - in the video he used Katana that has IR to simulate sound on speaker, signal is stereo though (so any ping pong delays etc will be recorded accordingly).
3. Recording cab speaker by mic: It's often loud solution. You pick up your room noise. You need to have mic and its quite problematic.
So what would you recommend?
@@BonesofGoldSkateboarding just wanted to complain it seems. might not have a solution oriented mindset
Soo.... Now what should I do... Plug the guitar into your a** to get the best tone of history..... Every way has its own minuit difference... 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
@@tonyelectionfraud669just wanted people to know what I wished I had known before I had started recording. You just pick your poison and decide what you can live with
@@kamilchosta5526 You could help me a bit, cause the lots of info I have collected has confused me. I can plug the electric or the acoustic electric guitar directly to the audio interface. That is ok. I will need a DAW to record. But what will add the effects (distortion) to the electric guitar sound? Do I need another program besides DAW? Thanx very much.
Thanks. This video is just what I was looking for.
This is by far the easiest video around to understand how it works.
Good video man.
Thanks
thanks this really helped out
amazing, thank you!
can you just plug the guitar directly into the focusrite with one cable without an amp or anything in the middle?
yes you can and then modify that sound from the DAW.
@@sourav2328 what is DAW sir?..
Ahhh I see digital audio workstation
@@sourav2328 is focusrite Scarlett 2i4 interface 1st gen, will still be good in my Ibanez GRX40 electric guitar? We
@@sourav2328 ohh I see, I see sir btw I just need a audio interface and a laptop or I can use the audio interface to connect it on my little speaker here..?
@@sourav2328 new to things like this, I'm still starting I know how to play a guitar but I'm not that good.. I'm planning to buy a second hand Ibanez because I think its cheap..
Great video 👍
That was Hey Joe you can't fool me 🤣 Great video man thanks for the info.
After trying for years with guitar sounds DI in Logic, Pro Tools and Ableton I must say, if you really want something that sounds authentic, you need to mic up an amp and whack that into your audio interface or mixing desk. There's no way around it for me, yeah if you want a quick riff here and there for funk, hiphop, pop ect then you can get away with vsts and Helix Native for example, but quality stuff is from a good mic and a decent amp. Thanks for the video really loved it!
Love the little Hey Joe rendition ;))
My exact thoughts lol mellow version
Really well done.
Many thanks!
great ! thank you !
Subscribing and commenting not only because of the great info, but the great page name haha.
thank you very much
Thanks, maybe you can review some equipment for us. Excellent video . Cheers
Thank you
Tip: When plugging a guitar into the scarlett turn the gain knob right down to zero, then press the inst. button located below the gain knob. The scarlett will automatically set the correct gain level so no clipping occurs. If using a DAW you should be aiming for -12db approx. regardless of using a amp sim etc...
I've been looking at different vids confirming this same thing. Jason Sadites explained it very well in a video, using the interface the way you described ensures we feed the same level signal as it would be if it went straight into an amp
Cheers brother
This helped so much this was a huge pain in my ass
Hi mate nothing to do with your video but just like yourself I’m teaching myself guitar. Started aswell with a cheap acoustic about 18 months ago and I’ve had my Slash AFD Epiphone since May. I’ve not got an attention span so find myself falling away from learning the skills and just playing songs lol. Anyway I’m going to work through your videos and get some tips. Cheers
Thanks for the helpful video. I have a question. I have a Scarlett Solo 3rd and my guitar is heard even when the instrument potentiometer is lowered to the end. Is that normal or should an electric guitar not be heard at all?
just one question, will the sound level coming from the guitar amplifier as an input to the sound card will be very low and I have to use another gadget to amplify that sound ?
I connect my guitar directly to my focusrite solo....I am using reaper daw and bias fx 2 vst....I am trying to create that green day billy joe tone but for some reason my guitar sounds muffled...I want it to sound crunchy bassy yet clean...
Hi I have a question. I have a Mackie Onyx Artist 1-2 which I bought recently to start recording guitar. The strange thing is that it doesn't detect my clean guitar signal, but when using a plugin like Fluff's AMPED Roots for overdriven or distorted tones, it picks up well. Direct in or clean guitar Sims don't work at all, and when I turn my signal input up, it just begins to peak and break up. Was reading somewhere that I will need a D.I box in this case. Could you provide your opinion for this matter?
When you direct monitor while playing the guitar, do you hear the processed sound with the added effects from the daw(like delay, distortion, etc)?
Which is better for music recording while playing guitar and singing with video recording, Audio mixer or audio interface?
HI, I like the way you have your audio interface up on a wooden box.
I find that its a bit of a pain to plug and uplug various instrument cables in and out.
I think Í'll make a box myself.
Thanks for your video,
Just one problem for my case. When I connect my headphone output from my amp to the audio interface, (I'm using Tascam US 322), the audio interface can't handle any signal I produce. Any solutions for that? Thanks!
I have a question! Can I use my old synth to audio interface and record it to my laptop?
could you also plug your guitar into some pedals and plug the cable from the last pedal into the audio interface?
Great video 👍👍. I have a question, can I connect the audio interface with mic and guitar to my android mobile phone to take live skype classes? (I don't have a laptop) plz help.
What if you're trying to do demo videos? Would an SM57 going thru a mini console and then to a laptop be best for demos that are trying to capture the natural sound of the guitar, amp or pedal you're trying to demo?
Can you reproduce sound in your computer (something like youtube) at the same time you are recording with the scarlett solo? i have an U-phoria UM2 and i can't and i am looking for this model of scarlett for doing that
Does a mixing software come with the audio interface? If not which mixing softwares are good
Here’s a good drinking game, take a drink every time he says “ audio interface”.
Thanks for a great video! I just wonder why you use rec out from your Katana instead of line out? Is there a difference between the two outputs?
is it possible to turn off the dry signal of the guitar? i just want to hear the amp plug ins only and not both while recording..thanks..
Where did you connect the camera/phone when you record using interface?
If I want to jam with a friend can I plug a 2nd guitar into the Scarlet Solo using a converter with the XLR socket normally used for microphones? Do I have to be careful not to use the 48v or Air buttons?
What is the interest of outputting through the sound card ? What if I directly output to my bluetooth headphone which is not pluggable into the sound card btw ? Can I still profit from VST plugins ?
Is that as good as it gets for a direct-in or can it sound better?
Is there alternative to connecting headphones to interface? (I don't have 6.3mm jack) can I somehow output and monitor the sound from my computer???
Can i plug a pedal fx directly between the guitar and the audio interface?
Thank you for a great video but playing the lead to that is going to be a bit flat so is it possible to add effects first otherwise trying to play rock lead guitar part like that with all it involves isn't going to happen for me
can you explain what do you mean by select the right input and output, I have no clue on how to do it
what is the add on software for different guitar amps ?
I have mic up my amp using scarlett solo, my problem is that I can't play along the track I just recorded because I can't hear it. I have no monitors on the interface - is that the problem? How do you record multiple tracks if you cant hear them?
If I wanted to use my pedalboard could I go straight into the interface instead of my amp into the interface? So my guitar into my pedals, then into the interface, and from there into my iPhone or iPad.
Am i need a special properties for the laptop as asio4all or the audio interface will do all the resource-intensive tasks?
As my laptop is not the best one.
How can I utilize both inputs of the interface for a single instrument (bass guitar), with the first one connected to a microphone in the amplifier and the second one capturing the line signal? Unfortunately, the line output of my amplifier is balanced XLR.
Can you monitor live performance on guitar with affects through monitors or head phones. Or do you apply affects after
little help here will it be the same if i use the Boss Katana Amp via the usb 2.00 to record to my laptop? is it the same as recording with an audio interface?? thanks in advance!!!!
Is it able to monitor real-time processed sound from the vst?
hi my amplifier has only one output and is for the guitar jack 6,3 how i connect my amplifier and my guitar to the scarlett and connect the scarlet on the pc ? sorry for my english and thanks
The amps are in the DAW right? And where do I find them?
Can you do all this stuff with a scarlett 2i2 ?
When you get your signals from a guitar processor it's better to be mono or stereo?
how do i hear the audio through my headphones that are plugged into my computer. i dont have a 1/4 inch to headphone jack adapter to plug directly into the scarlett, nor do i have speakers to plug into. so i want to just be able to monitor the guitar output through the computer that my headphones are plugged into.
Hi, do you need to use a laptop or Mac? i use irighd2 from my ipad and want to use my android phone to video myself with the audio from the interface . Is it possible? Thanks
when you have studio headphones connected to the Focusrite, do you still hear everything comin from your PC? say a game or music that's playing?
How can youn plug your guitar into the interface and mic your amp at same time? Do you need some kind of Y cord?
Hello I wanted to ask if this would work with a Chromebook it runs on chrome OS I just want something that I can plug my guitar into that will give me a clean recording on my laptop?
hi, i have connected focusrite via USB to my PC, in sound settings i switched to Focusrite USB audio, connected my bass guitar directly, pressed INST on Focusrite (flashes green)....and i am hearing no sound through my speakers. Know what may be the problem?
I wish it was possible to use AISO with an output, Also if anybody has issues with your interface showing up download AISO4all, then it should appear. With AISO4all you should be able to have an output at the same time.
Thanks for being yourself and not the obnoxious gdamn CZcamsr cringe fest creeps incredibly phony, it is greatly appreciated
How about the aux plug? Like the marshal amps have like the MG15 and MG10
recently got the scarlett 2i2 to record my electric-acoustic guitar. I cant seem to figure out why i keep hearing white noise in the background of the recording.. any ideas? (using a Fender guitar and cable plugging into macbook pro through scarlett 2i2)
For Linux, setting it up is just like Mac. I had the Solo, think I got it in 2019 (have to check Amazon orders). It worked good, but I was hoping I could use my computer more like an amp however I connected it to a Windows machine & all hell broke loose. After installing the driver every time I would shut the computer down it would freeze & then go in to that stupid Windows repair loop garbage. I plugged it in my Linux box & had no problems of course, however I just used Audacity and didn't know about the entire VST world, so I wasn't happy with my experience so I returned it. Kicking myself as I haven't purchased another interface and keep telling myself I will. Especially since Reaper will work with Linux and I don't have to ruin a perfectly good computer by installing Windows on it. I see those new M-Audio ones out for dirt cheap, so I'll watch a few interviews before I decide to go with it or the Evo 4. What I really want to use it for is transcribing more than anything.
Thanks for the info Rich. Yes those VST's offer a huge range of sounds and can replace an amp in terms of sounds you can create. How is the transcribing going?
@@MidlifeGuitar I'm actually getting better, but man I'm still pretty slow at it, but I think that has to do with my setup a little. It is super hard for me to differentiate between a Bm & a Bm7, but that could be due to my speakers. My sound system is of the "audiophile" variety so it sound more lively than it does true. That's why I would like the audio interface so I can play Transcribe through it instead.
Can a run a revv g3 directly into the interface or do I need an amp?
Among the three methods is still the same, you always need an audio interface before the computer so how does the other ones become an option?
Can someone more tech savvy help me? Is it possible to use a footswitch with your online virtual guitar tones (plugins) using this interface? Where would the footswitch plug into? To switch between lead and rhythm or your two favorite lead tones mid-song by pressing the switch. Can this be done?
if you plug it right into the audio interface that means no real time overdrive? its just default and sad until you process it?
I can use a WahWah pedal into the Interface and use BIAS plugins?
Do you have to connect it to a headphone or you can you also connect it to a speaker?
I cant find any acoustic guitars "how to".
I got the same, focusrite scarlet solo 3rd gen. Can you help me?
My acoustic guitar have a pickup, but when I record it on reaper, there aint any sound being recorded.
Please help, because when I record guitar, and I want to pan it, I only get sound from one side (R) and when I pan it to the L side, I can't hear it .. I tried everything
In method #1 can I put pedals after the guitar ?
Very informative video, i just got my focusrite 2i2 and using garage band. Need your advice. Recording a guitar with back tracking. Song is Black Magic Woman by Santana. Certain part of the song i want to use a different tone, how is it to make possible. Thanks
Try different amp sims
Most people get the one with the 2xlr inputs. As a solo artist (solo singer/guitarist, no drums) do you really need the 2 xlr or just the solo one?
No if you only record solo then you don't really need the one with 2 XLR inputs
Can you please help me with the minimum system requirements for using a scarlett 2i2 audio interface on a windows system? I checked the focusrite website, it dint help.
i have the focusrite solo 3rd gen too and an epiphone les paul 2020 i try plugging straight from my marshall vs100 to my focusrite but it sounds like hot ass crack and super delayed any ideas?
