- Hello and Merry Christmas!
Today I have another one of them talky-type videos to share with you all :)
If you’ve been around for a while (like I mean a REALLY long time), then you may remember the ‘how to record bass covers’ video I made many years back. This is sort of an updated version! I thought it’d be interesting to share with you guys how I now record my bass covers and compare it with how I used to.
Thanks to the folks and Focusrite for helping make this video a reality. I have been using the Scarlett 2i4 for ages and ages, no joke! Also thanks to MonkCustom Enterprise in Taiwan for their continued kind support.
Audio Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 2i2
Headphones and Microphone: from Fousrite Scarlett 2i2 studio kit
Wireless system: NUX B-5RC 2.4GHz Wireless system for Guitar/Bass
Finally, this video may be the last 'monthly' video in a while because of hand-nerve issues, school/work and real life stuff taking priority. Future uploads are likely to be more sporadic, but do stick around, I'd appreciate it! :) - Hudba
Bedroom bassists of the world UNITE!!
We CAN rule the world!!
bathroom singer have more population tho.. i guess
Unite separately in our own bedrooms!
Basement bassists RULE !!! But, is it ok if we unite also ? Just asking for a friend.....Tee Hee !
In the future, I'll join your alliance
Just a tip: for your mic input, use line mode instead of inst. You wanna use line for anything with amplification, like a condenser microphone, a synth, or with a pre-amp, etc. Also, a cool technique you might like is to record both the bass plugged into the Scarlett and the mic from the amp, and mix them together. You can do it with the 2i2, since it has 2 channels and the stereo output in the back and direct monitoring.
Hi, don't know if you still exist, but would you care explaining it a bit more? I don't get how you'd connect the guitar to the amp if it is already plugged into the interface (connecting the afore-mentioned stereo output to the amp via a "stereo to mono" cable?)
Also, I never had any issue connecting my guitars to a pre-amp (tsakalis multicab, forgot the name of the other) and then connecting the pre-amp to the interface using pure instrument mode, so I'd love to hear your reasoning behind it.
You could use a DI Box for your bass so you have two output signals. One goes for the amp itself the other to the first input of the interface at the same time.
And then with the sound coming from the amp you can use a mic and use the 2nd input of your interface for it.
Now you have two signals, one direct from your bass and the other from the mic of the amp.
@@Tonceitoys Nice, thanks! I happen to have a DI box, didn't know it could be used for that.
This is genuinely inpiring.. im a bass player aswell abt 6 months and im glad to see this channel
Aww yeah! We take this as your Christmas gift to us 😄😄
thank you. I have been watching this channel for a long time. you give me a true Xmas gift!
thanks for the video! I’m a bit relieved that someone is still using garageband like me haha. love your covers and been following for a while already. keep it up!
When i make covers, generally I place my phone in front of the amp and play the song on a bluetooth speaker and place it accordingly near my phone. Doesn't sound bad either. 😄
It does
I tried it on my 15w amp but i can’t hear my bass and sound terrible
So much easier, and it sounds just fine. More real and raw than pristine and fake. I prefer more live and raw.
Life hacks for bass players
Thats what I do, with a mic now in my phone input. I wish the audio interface could just allow you to play direct with your backing tracks without all the hassle.
Potato quality! I love that description. Love the evolution story. Thank you for sharing 💕
Bought a Scarlett few weeks ago and I needed this!
Your info you gave is pure gold. Thank you for sharing your bass secrets.
You probably not gonna read this, but back in 2013, for the first time I saw your muse cover, Hysteria. Never thought this video will be in my recommendation homepage lol
I just got a scarlett solo for christmas! Can't wait to start recording! Great stuff keep up the awesome work!
just ordered one too! can't wait to record! :)
Thanks for your dedication to the community
Love your passion in your craft. ! Beautifully done Lass ! All My Best !
Nicee! I usually like either direct or amp, but even a combination of both is cool. Awesome video and really nice sound
You've been an inspiration for me since 2016, now have been 3 months since I got my first bass. Keep it up
How's it coming along?
@@VideoGameAtlas It's been a whole learning process, still feeling like a beginner. I've been learning slap, salsa music and blues. I hope that by the end of this year I finally learn how to CREATE bass lines.
@@aurasofiasandoval6974 can we have an update :)
@@onezerosevensix czcams.com/video/2QnRCWXhVPA/video.html 1 yr 4 months progress :)
Protip! If you want the best tone (in my personal opinion) take both the direct out from your bass and have your amp mic'd up as well. this way you get the character of your cabinet and amplifier while maintaining the clarity and definition of a DI signal.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video and to explain all of this!
Great video! I prefer the Scarlett audio interface method too. It is the one that I use for recording bass covers for my Instagram page and hands down, it sounds the best. Love the work you put into your videos Jasmine!!
You have come long way i watched your old videos and now your are very Impressive
good luck, keep it up you always be one of my inspirational character
Just exactly what i need, merry christmas... thank you !
been subbed since 2013 when i first started playing, this video is super helpful, remember watching the old one you mention lol. merry christmas
Thank you so much for the info and the way you presented it. I’m a novice bass player and really appreciate you explaining the differences in equipment you used in the olden days. Hit me shopping for the same gear maybe as a treat for myself later in 2021. I wish you the very best in all of your pursuits and endeavors with much success in all you set out to do. Pray for your well being and healing. Peace to you and your family and friends in this upcoming year ... Peace !!! 🖖🏽 “live long and prosper !!!”
Wow. Thanks so much. I have been practicing and building up to this moment, and now I wanna start recording some covers and you made it so simple for me to understand. Lots of videos out there are quite a bit more complicated. Yours was just right (for me anyway.)
Interesting to see the evolution of your recording technique, thanks for posting! I also use a Focusrite interface unit with Garageband, and have had very good audio quality results.
Amazing, and happy holidays guys 🧡
Thanks for this video. Wish you a good recovery!
I like the sound of the mic. I’m a little wary of using wireless for recording; but wow. The interface sounded the best. I’ve been recording direct for a few years and I just recently went back to mic’ing the cab. Let’s say it takes some tricks and several effects pedals to get a really mic-ready tone. I finally achieved The Tone.
Thank you for this video. I've been looking for this to record myself playing bass.
It was a great evolution, congrats!
You just showed me everything I needed to see! Thank you!!!
Just found out about you today. Great content. I prefer the sound of the amp overall, but the direct one has a clear midrange tone to decipher the individual notes. Glad I found your channel. I started my bass channel last year. Cheers
I love your videos! Drums are my main thing, I play some metal/Metal core guitar.. but I want to get a bass in the near future. Love your style. You’re awesome!
Very enlightening the direct comparison of the different methods 👍
Thanks for this, great break down!
This is what I needed! Thank you so much
Thank you so much for this one!
I have been playing the bass for about 6 months now and was very confused about recording. This clears up a lot of my doubts!
Stay safe, cheers! :)
Keep playing!
I've been playing for 10 years now and recording is still very confusing to me. Don't give up. As well I shall try not to >
Excellent video! Happy new year from Australia
Look how young young miss Depp was when she started! 🥺🥺🥺 Hard to believe she's now a full-blown rock star! 🎸 🎸 🎸
Thank you very much for this informative video! I’ve been thinking about doing a bass covers on CZcams as well. Your current method of recording is simple enough for me to understand. And it sounds great! I think I’ll be copying your current methods.
Thanks for making this! Inspired me to start a channel and journal my bass growth.
Happy newyear and thanks for awesome video!
This is awesome. I have the same recording journey as you. From just only camera mic to usb link. Now audio interface and amp sim is a lifesaver haha
thanks for sharing your recording experience! directly recording with a mic to your amp, as well as using the Scarlett seem to sound the best to me :) Happy New Year!
Congrats 90k subs🔥🔥
This helps a lot. Thank you so much for making this
Lovely video! Thanks for that ☺
Cool!
Your voice is soothing - I couldn’t listen to you speak all day. Great playing 👍
recently got a Scarlett too, can't believe I'd gone that long without one smh. great vid :)

Awesome, this very helpful!!!
Great video, clarified all my doubts
Merry Christmas keep up the good work :D
Great tuto, merry Christmas to and your family.
You go girl 🙌 💪 🎵 🎸 🔥 yeah been playing for 3 years now and all i have is an amp and tried to play it over a song playing on the bluetooth speaker while recording through the phone. Thanks for sharing your beautiful knowledge and experience i might have to start investing on the same equipment as you now Again THANKS 🎵🎵
This is useful. Thanks for sharing
Very cool! Thank you.
Thank you, that were exactly the things i needed to know!
The Scarlett interfaces are fantastic pieces of gear. I've also been using one for ages and I can't say enough good things about the quality of the sound and the ease of use. One thing though, I would recommend against using wireless in this context. Wireless can introduce interference, noise, and latency to your signal which will be detrimental to the quality of your recording.
Awesome. Gonna try this soon :)
Awesome vid!
Found this video at the right time - just ordered a 2i2 and a Rode NT1A for Acoustic covers! Thanks
Followed you scince 2012 with my 1st youtube account(recently get deleted by youtube IDK why) so happy to be here again 💕
🌳👀🌳
Wow that blue tooth connection is so cool!
Pretty slick and very informative. Thank you miss Bassologist.
Have been using my 2nd Gen for many many years and it just works.
Just wanted to add on to some AMP MIC setup that you did not go into. If you use the Amp Mic method, you have a whole lot of options to adjust your setup, either you can put your mic in the center of the speaker and a more balanced and whole sound, or you can have it more on the rims of it, you can also experiment with a two mic setup if you want to. That is all, and great video by the way, hope you have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Edit: Forgot to say that you can also do the same kind of things on some music software, but so far many professionals do it the old fashion way.
Great vid. Very clear and concise info
Awesome video Jasmine 😊👍👍 Merry Xmas and Happy New Year 2021 from Perth Western Australia🎄🎄🎄
thanks for posting really helpful you have mad chops too
Merry Christmas and a Outstanding New Year...💙👊😎
Yep! You're right about everything here! (I just want to point out that you happen to be speaking into the 180 degree side of that mic, though. It still works, and you may have intended to do it for some reason, but that's the "rejection" side of this particular mic. Most side-address mics denote the 0 degree direction with a polar pattern design. Aloha!)
That is probably why I was hearing a lot of bass sibilance.
@@jimle22 sibilance
ha! i also tried to express this point to a tuber but i like the way you said it "...u may have intended to do it for some reason..' was very diplomatic
Papanegro and Chancho en Piedra for a start. Love it!
Épico siono?
Great!! ✨
Thanks for a very useful video!💜💜💜
Merry Christmas Jasmine, best wishes from Edinburgh 😊
Great video!
Nice and concise. Thank you very much. Probably not gonna do any bass videos anytime soon, but if I ever feel like it now I know how. :D
Thank you, right now my setup is plugging my bass into the mic input if my PCs sound card, I think I need to upgrade to a focusrite though as I dont think I'm getting the proper bass frequencies from it. Thank you for the useful info!
Nice guitar thanks for sharing
Happy new year 🙌
Wow you sound amazing
Thanks! 👍
TALENTED!
Tú eres sorprendente! ❤️
I’m going to buy that same unit for my Mac thanks for posting
Thanks for sharing!
A mix of method 2 + method 4 is the best. One of my fav players on youtube does it like this. Method 4 is more defined but the low end is so rich when you record from the amp like in method 2. So mixing both is the way to go.
Sadly I only do method 4 for my covers but I use Amplitube to emulate an amp. Not ideal, but I'll get a mic when I can to record from the amp as well. Nice vid, like your dedication :)
Thank you !
You’re so talented at bass, keep releasing good content & you’ll surely make a great following!
Thank you for the great video!
Interestingly the Alesis has some nice low end frequencies and wasn't that bad besides some buzzing. But the 2i2 is sounding pretty clear and good. I've always been a fan of recording it with a good mic from the amp, but it's not the way doing it in the middle of the night in a house where your family or neighbors want to sleep. :D
Stay safe and healthy. Have a great 2021!
Great. Thank you for the info in easy to understand language.
Listeners need to use headphones to hear the differences properly . Excellent tutorial thank you
Good video. That's how I do it now too. I use a M-audiousb interface. I used to plug my combo output into my laptop audio input using a jack-to-mini-jack converter before. I see a lot of good players in youtube, but some really have no clue how to properly record their sound. Hopefullt this will help.
Wow this video is perfect for new CZcams bassists
Thank you for making this video I could use this as a reference to record guitar covers 😆.
So cool, great video. Algo, no web know who teaches english to Davie. You speak it so clear!
I really enjoyed this video, thank you! I've been looking at Focusrite and wondering if that studio bundle is a good idea or not; now I know! :)
That NUX wireless system is very cool too. Thanks again!
