  • Harley Davidson Big Twins, other than Dynas and FXRs all use the same design kickstand (HD calls it a "jiffy stand") and it deserves to be serviced.

    Removing the leg stop, and pushing the leg forward to release spring tension was exactly what I needed to see. Knew there had to be a better way, and was not surprised my CZcams search found a Pacific Mike video with that perfect tip and clear instruction. Thanks Mike!

    Excellent instructions and thank you for mentioning showing caution dealng with the spring I learned by getting bit. I am going to share this video with a friend who doesn't service his kickstand he seems to oddly enjoy a bungee cord and I hope he fixes his kickstand. Thank you for promoting safety I appreciate it.

    I've been using lithium grease on the kick stand for near 50 years. It attracts and holds much less crud than waxy grease and stands up to heat better. If you use the spray can type, then hit it from the top before washing your bike (as a flush), then a quick shot after washing. Give it a wipe after the solvent flashes out and Bob's ur uncle.

    Thanks Mike. I have watched many of your videos. I have a 1979 superglide 80ci. This is my first Harley I have been riding since I was 7 years old. I am 58 now. I like to do my own mechanical work. It’s the only way to know how it works and keep costs low. Take care.

    I've always slip a small section of automotive heater hose on the leg wherever it makes contact with the frame or peg knuckle...or wherever to keep down the rattles...now I use this clear tubing I found at the homeless deport and you can't even see it. Change it out every time you service the jiffy stand...just part of ownership with early model and mid century vehicles 2wheels or 4. Mike I like your methodology!

    Hey Mike. Jus luv your videos. Changing the jiffystand spring today. Thank you. Hauled home from Pennsylvania to Boston area March 2017 (in 10 degree weather) a black 1984 early model Harley FXRT. Under 12,000 miles. Been working on it since then. I replaced laced (21" front) to used 9 spoke (19") and rear laced to 9 spoke (16" both) with new tires and had a shop set endplay. New progressive springs, fork seals, oil, and greased steering stem bearings. New speedo drive. New switches thru the bars, new Le Pera sport seat, and seat latch which was missing Probably got the last NOS from Black Cat Harley in NC). Made my own seat hold down strap from coated cable and ring terminals. New performance Machine 4 piston front caliper. Waiting on a Rox Speed riser to measure for all new cables. I'm 5'5.5" tall and 120 lbs so I need a few adjustments to feel comfy. Lol. I've replaced rotted circuit breakers and got after market turn signal lights. It had none. Wiring from the circuit breaker panel to the back done with a little bit of marine heat shrink. I'll be rewiring and reconfiguring length and placement under left side of the gas tank the rest with Deustche connectors cuz the old connectors were inside a long gone fairing and not waterproof. Right now it's a rat's nest but I'll be keeping original color coding on everything. Got beefy chrome chain adjusters. The lollypops were bent and worn and kinda flimsy. Had to weld repair the primary cover. Evidently someone tried to torque the drain plug and cracked it. Retapped and works fine. You can't see the repair as it faces down. Also had to helicoil the one long screw on that cover which was stripped. It torqued up fine. Cleaned the chain with some kerosene. Chain and sprocket are good. New air filter, plugs and wires in the wings waiting for the moment of truth. Last thing would be purchase of a 2 piston rear caliper and readjust chain before the moment of truth when I turn the key. Can't thank guys like you enough for your helpful videos. I've never worked on big scoots before. At almost 66 I find garage time enjoyable, satisfying, peaceful. Thanks again Mike. As we say in Bostin, you're wikked awsome.

      Just a little sidenote for you. FXR's are awesome. The coolest thing is of course, the chassis. Very few people take the time to align that frame. It's in your service manual and I've done it a lot. It makes a tremendous difference in handling, which is what that bike is all about.

    Thanks again for another great video Mike. I had that same kickstand on my 76 FLH when I got it. The bike has a slight rake and extended tubes so the previous owner put that type of stand on it that didn't have the heel piece on it so whenever I wanted to put the stand down I had to reach down and grab it with my hand. I got tired of that so I tried an experiment. I got a stock kickstand knowing that the bike would lean over too far due to the shorter length. I took the stop off and dropped a piece of thin flat stock in there so it was between the shaft and the mount. That kept the stand from going up too far and causing the bike to lean over too far. That way I could let the stand down with my foot. I wondered how long it would last but forgot about it until I saw this video. That was almost twenty five years ago and it still works great. I hope you are enjoying yourself and getting to do some things you like while helping the rest of us. May God bless you.

    Well hell Mike, what a simple task, but it never occurred to me to take the nut off to clean the jiffy stand. I always just waste too much brake cleaner spraying down into the stand and cramming a rag in there afterwards with a screw driver to clean it. My old method doesn't do a very good job, waste brake cleaner and makes a hell of a mess. Silly how we as humans can miss the obvious sometimes (most of the time for me). So now I know how to clean the jiffy stand and maybe more importantly, how to change a busted jiffy spring without pinching my fingers. Thanks for vid. Please keep them coming.

      Speaking of springs, would really like to see how you assemble brake shoes on older brake drums with those huge springs. Another area where one can really hurt themselves. I'm sure you have a trick or two on this one.

      Not a difficult task. I was, of course, raised on drum brakes, and I have an annoying squeak coming from the front brake on my Panhead. Hopefully, we'll get to it soon.

    Man that sure is a pretty scooter brother! I really love the Knuckleheads! I've said that though! It would be a dream bike for me! It's cool how you take the time to show people what your doing! No speeding up the videos or turning off the camera why you loosen up bolts or whatever! At least the 2 or 3 vids I've seen! But I subscribed brother! Even if you don't per say work on a Ironhead or anything! Just interesting to see and learn!

    I saw another video that recommended connecting the spring hook on the backside of the jiffy stand loop hole. There wont be a great deal of resistance and I don't think it makes contact like I believe the spring and your jiffy stand is making in your video. Nevertheless, the way you did it will still work.

      It always has. Different fork legs (bunch of different manufacturers) have different bends (even slightly), the tabs can be different, what works for you is what works. I don't make the rules.

    Iv found on my 87 FXRC that the holes for the pins have been rounded out leaving a lot of slop! The thing hangs low and need to repair it, im wondering the best way of doing it. All i can think of is have a welder fill the holes in properly and redrilling the holes? I'm pretty green but am working my ass of to square this bike away because i truly love it. Any info would be great an thanks for the content!

      You have a great Harley model. No wonder you're going to the effort. I'd have to see it. The FXR's have a kind of funky kickstand. But, I'm sure it can be repaired. I can't quite envision the problem. But, a creative welder is always an asset.

I know that's a pretty unorthodox FXR front end but it rides great and looks great..to me anyway lol. Thanks Mike. Love the channel!

      Something is wrong. Maybe the leg stop is broken, worn, or loose.

    I wish I had 1/2 of your cool. Is a Twinkie sidestand the same? I know the Twinkie has a 'ride-off ' stand, in case a rider forgets to put it up, which I can testify works great. But after 20 years , I just been squirting wd-40 on it, but it deserves better.

    I installed a brand new spring on my shovelhead. Used the same method. Only now the stand sags even more than it did with the 40+ year old spring. Any thoughts Mike?

      Some springs are just not made well. If you can, an original is best, but hard to find. Sometimes the jiffy stand leg itself is a poor replacement for the original.

    I have an 06 sportster 1200, does not have a top screw, only a bearing and basically a cotter pin holding it in with the spring. I bought a cycle gear new spring and it won’t stay retracted, basically gotta hold it in place to park bike… annoying but guessing I need a Harley made spring?

      I'm afraid a great number of aftermarket kickstand springs have done this to a lot of us. Some products are good and some aren't.

    my spring is too long .....I think ....when the kick stand is up it wobbles and hangs down a little . Is there a good supplier of the correct spring ?

      Alot of suppliers make them. Harley used them in different lengths for different models. Your best bet is a genuine Harley specific to your model.

      When tightening or loosening chrome bolts, the twelve point end of your wrench can chip the chrome. Old habit. May not bother you, but customers are really pleased when their bike comes back as near perfect as possible. Also, must use highest quality tools for a perfect fit.

    Hi Mike!, my jiffy stand on my low mile 2003 Heritage softail rotates too far forward, past the stopper, the big nut is tight, the spring feels a little weak, once its in the slot, I can lean the bike over, but a lot of the time when I just go to kick my stand forwards, it keeps going, wth! lol any info is greatly appreciated, Bro! Thx!

      I can't really see it, but you can buy the individual parts. Here's where you're really best buying genuine parts from the dealer.
