Using all the proper parts, we'll fit all these things to each other. We have the proper year clutch basket, all new fiber and steel plates, new springs, releasing disc, and hub with all the good stuff.

    There is a very simple mathematical equation. Google "torque extension calculator". Sometimes you need to confirm what other people (snap-on) tell you.

    Great video Mike! However the torque at 90 degrees (on the adapter) is not at all the same as when it is forward at 0 degrees.

    Hey Mike, first of all thanks for your videos and sharing your knowledge with us. I have a question. I have a 1988 Softail. Can I put the motor together on a stand and install it in the bike. Or do I need to keep the rocker boxes off to put it in the bike?

      You can certainly install the motor as a complete unit. It is explained in the factory service manual. You really should invest in one.

    It would sure be interesting to me, if you would take an engine design (like the Shovelhead) and walk us through the evolution of that particular engine. How it changed from ‘66 to ‘84 to overcome problems that became apparent over time and use. It sounds like a lot of work but it sure would be interesting to see. A playlist with each engine design covered would be gold IMHO. 👍

      It may not go down as far as you want or it may not have enough movement if you lower it too much (it may bottom out on the frame). But, as per your service manual, there is a nut on the bottom of that post where it goes through the bottom of the frame. Take off the nut from the outside, on the bottom of the bike, and lift the whole post out. Now turn it over. There should be a nut with a jam nut against it. Release those two and move them up as far as they will go and tighten them. Reinstall the seat post after greasing it well and try that. Use your HD service manual.

      @@pacificmike9501 my seat post does not have a nut at the bottom but a notch that must fit into a cut-out at the bottom of the frame. What do you think about the idea if I lower the seat, but instead put on stronger springs (machine springs - heavy duty springs). Do you think it will work? I have tried tightening the current springs on the seat post. unfortunately it does not lower the seat post / the seat. /Karsten, Denmark

    My 79 flh oil temp is 235* degrees on hot day could even get to 245* degrees in stop and go traffic on a hot day . Is this normal for a shovelhead on a hot day with no oil cooler? My evolution softail oil temp is always 190* to 210* degrees.

      It's pretty common. You'd like an oil cooler. Be sure you can turn it off in the Winter.

    Thanx Mike! I've been following you for over 5 years now. Another 2 years we'll be at our 10 year anniversary 😅 You're concise and to the point and very good at explaining things. We appreciate you! I'm trying to decide at this very moment what sprocket to change to on my 80 FLHC. It's factory 22/51 currently. It screams like a rapid banshee at 65 mph on the highway. I'm doing transmission mainshaft seals presently. So thought it would be the best time. I wanna go 24/51. Wadaya think? S&S top end (stock spec) and a Andrews #3 (514/514) S&S oil pump stock carb straight fishtails with lollipops. Thanx for any light you can shed on this. And always a pleasure seeing/hearing your videos!

      I ran a 24 on the trans and a 49 on the rear wheel for years. I was pretty happy with it. Then, I got a six speed. I love tall gears. I'm not a drag racer. I like to run at freeway speeds with no effort. That's why I say to experiment around and see what you like.

    Hi Mike! Hope all's well with you and your family. Question time! I have 55 pan with 4 speed ratchet top mousetrap set up. Clutch is Barnett with after market pressure plate. Have original clutch set up and the issue remains even when I put that back in. The clutch rod release lever is at best 3 and a quarter inches from ratchet lid when I bottom out the adjusting screw. the clutch rod release lever also seems to have way to much free play but not sure if that's a non issue. I've had bike running , kicks very hard. Cannot get linkage and mousetrap to work properly. I seem to have an inch of cable slack at hand lever I can't resolve. Any thoughts or input would bee greatly appreciated. Thank you Todd

      Possibility of wrong length throwout rod. There are 4 different length rods available. These are things you can learn from your collection of catalogs. Next is the clutch release arm. Be sure you're using the right one of those for your application.

    Mike, I don't know if you look at new comments on old videos or just the most recent ones, but thanks for sharing all that knowledge! I'm lacing up an old wheel that needed a new rim and I am having a problem! I followed your guidance completely and my wheel went together great, but when tightening up all the nipples to cover the threads on the spokes, every other one on both sides gets super hard to tighten just before I get to the end of the threads. I'm concerned because there's no way most of them are going to tighten up much more while some are still loose. I hope you have an idea what is going on. I'm going to go back and make sure I didn't screw something up but I checked and checked and was really careful doing it...

      If the pattern is correct. If you crossed four spokes. That's not three, it's four. If the dimples the holes are in are at the proper angles, then the spokes are not the right ones. You might take it apart and start over. Are these 16" wheels? Are the hubs proper? Must have all proper parts and lace according to service manual.

      @@pacificmike9501 They are 16" wheels. The only thing being replaced is the rim. I think I do need to take it apart and start over. If somehow I started going in the wrong direction with the first spokes and continued it lacing the entire wheel, could it do something like this? Yeah, I think I do need to start over. Thanks!       Of course I answered you. We all start the same. I remember the first wheels I did. I did it straight out of a Harley service manual. They came out good too. It was worth every minute of it. I hope you are using new spokes and antiseize.

      I was lacing it correctly as it turns out. I'm afraid the problem lies somewhere else. A little background might help. I'm building a custom 53 panhead bobber that I bought as a rolling chassis with rebuilt engine and trans and a couple totes full of parts. The wheels aren't original, they were swapped for some that could use disc brakes. They look to be early or mid '70s. This wheel might have already had a problem and I didn't notice it while taking it apart, just thinking the nipples had boogered up threads. I bought a rim because the old one was really dinged up but the other parts looked and seemed okay. I see the reason the nipples get tight. Where there are pairs of spokes crossing closest to the rim they are touching and it actually takes a little force to push the top one down so I can thread on the nipple. As I tighten them up one of the pair seems to bind making it hard to thread. Sorry for the long post, I realize you can't diagnose something like this because I'm using all this mismatched stuff, but thanks for your input. Oh, and I am using antiseize.

    Never did run an oil filter on the old scooters. Oil consumption was a quart every 500 miles so you are doing an oil change every 2000 miles. When filters became important was when Harley decided to include the primary in an enclosed lubrication system.

      I think the owner's manual on an early Pan said something like a quart in 900 miles. I may be wrong. Have to find my old owner's manual.

      It's a beautiful setup. Use your service manual. Most people destroy that rear chain case. Honestly, if you use and maintain it as per Harley, your original chain could last forever. It's a beautful system. R&R the rear wheel, leaving the sprocket in place.

      @@pacificmike9501 I had it apart 23+ years ago. I wanted to look at the sprocket bearings etc. replaced the bearings. That's where ( during rebuild) my head started spinning. Not a great design in my minds eye. Giant eclip "bearing retainer" doesn't sit in a groove. The manual definitely is 42 years old. 🧐🧐

      Well, it sounds like you've got "priors" with this thing. Possibility you've got it down better than I do. I just always respected them because that chain running in oil, never seemed to have any wear on it. Removing the wheel and leaving the sprocket in place was cool. The only problem I experienced was owners taking them apart for no reason. Again, I think you know these better than I.

    Hey Mike! Tx for all the invaluable info! Im about to put new tires on my 81 shovelhead. The only jack I have is a Craftsman yellow jack rated for 1500 pounds. Are you familiar with it? Reason I ask is Im gonna have to leave bike on jack for possibly 2 wks. It has locking tabs that, when at desired height, you back off the hydraulics and it stays put. Is there anything else I should do safety wise other then just strapping bike to jack. This is my first time doing this so I wanna make sure Im not missing anything. Tx!

    Hello Mike , I'm just wondering if anyone took over your old shop in SLO to fix older bikes ? Also did you know the guy in Lompoc that worked on older bikes , I went by his shop one day and it was closed and looked like he was moving out . Any way thank you guys for making these videos because I always learn something new .

    Sherwood glades fall silent now, no creaking in old boughs, white birds circle overhead, seeking fresher ploughs, so wheel away, on unseen winds. The forest fauna now line tree limbs, to hold spare legs aloft, it's a 'paws for thought' for Sonya, 'cos the outlaws have gone soft. (I blame Costner f'all that . . . now Errol was your man! - mad, bad & tree-top high most the time - a real 'twanger'! : )

    hey Mike why do some pan rocker covers have d-rings and others do not. My 49 FL has them.

      They all came with D-Rings. The early Pans came with D-rings that were three layers of stacked steel welded together. The later Pans had cast aluminum D-Rings that were one piece and much thicker. I like the looks of the early steel parts because it makes the lids look taller. Scrounging for all the parts you want makes it real interesting. I've hand picked all of those parts for Babydoll.

    Good deal Mike, thanks for pointing out the fact that you should never over fill the Oil Tank. Best I can remember Harley Davidson Dip Sticks have the Full mark and Low and or Add marks. My 1993 FLHS ELECTRA GLIDE has written on the dip stick, Don't over fill. I once did and the Jugs gasket started leaking after a short ride. I drained some oil out and topped it off to the full mark. Clean up, No more leaks.

    Hello! Can you use the later Panhead set of points on a Knucklehead distributor to avoid the hassle of the spring and so on? I know the condenser is different but not sure on the points. THANKS
