@cowboy7x I have 42 180 in the China carb seems like the needles are blunt compared to reg oem carb. so u can get by with a smaller jet because of the taper of the needle being bigger I tried the 45 pilot and 180 but always seemed rich at an idle. Put the 42 back in an 2 / 2 1/4 turn out +or - 1/4 turn. bike runs good low speeds haven't had time to check the plug yet. Don't smell raw gas anymore after I set the a/f screw highest idle and brought back" idle screw" down to 1000 rpm fully warm. Bike has to be fully warm and these evo motors take a while to warm up they do not hold heat well. Those settings in my are 1700above sea level in south dakota.

I have one of those on a new to me Dyna and it works great so far. One note though, those bowl screws are very likely NOT Phillips but JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) and won't strip if you use the correct JIS driver....that would be the case on the stock Kehin carb for sure. I didn't know the difference myself for years and stripped plenty of JIS screws. In a pinch you can grind the tip of a Phillips driver shorter and it will fit JIS screws better and be far less likely to strip them.

I'm going on 2.5 years strong with my $50 cv carb for my 01 Dyna. Immediatley replaced all the gaskets/components with a james kit (the ones it came with were junk). Also swapped the jets from the old carb. Thing as been absolutley flawless. My bike never ran right with the stock CV. Rebuilt it twice and replaced many parts and could never fully get rid of the cough, plus it was sluggish off the line. Also would have to run the choke for at least the first 10 mins of riding, now its literally 30 seconds to a minute. The amazon carb took all of 5 mins to tune and has been perfect ever since. I did replace the philips screws with allen screws. Been thinking of trying a knock off Mikuni from amazon. These CV's are such old tech, even the cheapos are good. $399 for a new one is robbery. 7k miles on the carb now btw.

I ordered one from Amazon for my 06 Sportster 1200C and three things i don't like about it. 1) the accelerator pumpkin nozzle squirts to the far right end of the carb throat. I tried to turn it with some needle nose pliers but it went back to the same place. Probably loose as the nozzle sits in by pressure.
    2) the jet kit that it comes with will only work with the same carburetor but arent interchangeable with the stock carburetor as the threads are not the same. 3) the threads on the neck of the carb, where the filter screws/bolt on to are not interchangeable with stock screws. I had to go to 3 hardware stores and none carried the screw i needed. Closest thing i got to was a M5 screw but even then it would not thread in nice and tight. Im returning the one i ordered, hopefully the screw holes were defective and not threaded properly.

This carb either needs a going through, and a re jet. I might just go with a $65 unit. I've seen them advertised plenty and have always been curious. In my case, for 65 bucks, it's worth I try I believe. Why not ??

I use them my panheads and shovels (kick only). To be honest they need to be modified to run as good as a original especially the accelerator pump, it doesnt work as it should. So, i change all Springs cause they are to weak, i drill the pump cover and install a bearing like original has and the squirt in throttle is good and by so is away the flat spot when accelerating.

I have a 99 road king with a stock kehin 40 mm carb. Had the typical CV COUGH until I installed a Yost kit, and it was the cure. Yes it is a hundred bucks, but it works great. I'm running a 46 slow jet with a 195 main jet. Yost gives you a hot line to troubleshoot, if you need to. I have no back firing, and no spitting or the typical CV cough. I would consider buying that Amazon carb if i ran into a situation like yours, but your old carb will work by using an ultrasonic cleaner. Have a great day and keep the shiny side up.

Carbs should be cheap as simple and ancient as they are. (The first SU in the early 1900s is the first CV which piston slide design remains in production. ) JIS is the Japanese standard screw head used in Keihin and clones. I use the Vessel ball handle screwdrivers for all Keihins. Screw threads get a dab of silicone dielectric grease as do adjustment screws.
BTW the two junk new plugs do have a use as an ignition tester since stock HD coils fire pole-to-pole. I tack weld pairs of plugs as spark testers because they can hang in space off a kickstarting bike and still fire. A zip tie across the shells works too.

In the early 1970s Harley ran american-made Bendix carburetors. They swapped to the Keenan CV carb because it was $5 cheaper. This was about two and a half hours at minimum wage. Dish would be like $20 today. Back then if you bought a dresser for $2,900 I would have paid the extra $5 to have an American carburetor on it instead of having to buy an American carburetor to replace the Japanese one.

Harley ran butterfly Keihins after Bendix and before CV Keihins. All of them are tunable and easy to manage for me but it seems some people had trouble with each of them. We had customers beg to trade new S&S or Mikuni kits (installed by them or some bubba) for good butterfly (Ironheads ran well on Big Twin CVs) or CV Keihins.

@@STLNik I saw you mentioned you were running a 48 pilot jet in your video. That's pretty tall for a sportster. Try stepping that down to a 45. When I run a cv on my 1250 it was only using a 42 pilot and a 170 main. That's with cams and headwork. Sometimes that cough can be a rich situation in the rpm range. You could have an intake leak if it's wanting bigger jets. Mines notorious for that. I noticed I was using smaller jets in the knock off and it run a lot better. I just raise the needle if it's to lean. I also drilled out my slide hole and clipped a couple notches off the slide spring as well. Helps those cv's get off their ass a little better. Not many agree with that but I do. It's in Dynojet's jet kit instructions. You can download that. I run all my cv carbs the same. I just prefer S&S now after messing with em but I got a dear love for my old cv's. I keep a few around.

I have fitted my aftermarket carb but still get the same issue....when adjusting the air/fuel mixture is it more fuel or less fuel to solve the issue of the cough / backfire through the carburettor?

    • @STLNik
      @STLNik  Před 2 lety +1

You could have several issues here. First I'd check if you have the proper jets for your engine size/set up. Seconds I'd make sure your not leaking air around the intake gaskets. Once you've done both, turn the mixture screw in until it softly bottoms out, then turn it out two turns. For a 1200 I run 180/48 jetting

READ BEFORE YOU BUY A USED HARLEY CARB OR THIS AMAZON CARB! I purchased a used one off ebay, trying to keep with OE Harley parts. I knew I would need to rebuild. What I did not know is that if the previous owner removed and installed the float pin incorrectly, the float posts will wear oval or egg shaped. The float will never be able to seal properly and you will be chasing too rich/too lean conditions.
I purchased this same $65 carb. The float bowl did NOT have an overflow outlet. I transferred over my jets from the Harley carb. The float was checked and dead on. There was debris from manufacturing. After cleaning it out/inspecting, it fired up on the first try. These carbs are cheap Chinese carbs and the fit/finish shows. But it will work great.

Im not a big fan of replacing shit that I can rebuild or fix. That being said, this might be a good choice to try out if a stock carb was absolutely trashed with oxidation etc… otherwise, if you understand how these carbs work and are able to rebuild them, then why wouldn’t you?

    • @STLNik

If you have a stock cv with no upgrades done its cheaper to replace it with this unit as it already has the common upgrades done. As well as it comes with a full jet kit. Price CV performance jets, they're about $5 a piece. After jets, seals, brass elbow, etc it just doesn't make sense

Those are JIS head fasteners, and there is literally NO reason not to replace every 'Phillips" head driver you have with a JIS driver. They are fundamentally better. Yeah torx would be nice, these are Japanese designed carburators though. Don't use a 1/2” wrench in a 13mm bolt, or a drywall bit on a JIS screw and you'll find life easier than when you did.
