thank you for actually knowing what you were talking about . i got stuck watching another video about rebuilding a cv carb for about 45 min it was like a train wreck you just couldn't look away even though it was horrifying

Excellent video! I've always wondered how that manifold was lined up. Never had to remove the one from my bike so I never needed to research in the manual. Great info. Would live to see more harley stuff! Great channel!

i just did mine "in the bike" a pain in the a.. but got er done !!
I was about to say that. Some of these guys don't understand that not everyone has that type commodity.
Agreed, while in the bike not near that easy. Didn't show disassembling everything on the left side of the motor to get at the manifold bolts. Wonder why Harley couldn't have used regular hex head bolts instead of allen head bolts. Would have made things a bit easier.

Good instructions and the video is well-produced. I just wish somebody would make one showing the procedure with the motor still in the frame...I've got to get this done soon on my Evo Sportster.
That surely is a question for Shane. We try to respond to these questions but with 700 videos on here its hard to keep up with the demand of over 400 requests a week for “a quick answer” it's just become hard to manage in a timely manner.

I’m putting a makuni 42 carb on my 05 Dyna wide glide can I use factory Harley intake seals with the makuni manifold plus why is there a map sensor on my bike it’s carb not injection theses no ECU on the bike thank you for your help great vids 👏

Thanks, I've got to do this very soon, waiting for the parts to arrive. My bike possibly has a vacuum leak somewhere around the carb. Can't get a constant idle. Get idle set then 20 minutes into the ride the idle is 200 to 300 rpm higher. Gonna rebuild the carb, replace the intake manifold gaskets and the carb to manifold gasket. Wish me luck, and thanks for the video!

I have to reseal my old heritage. Rear cylinder leak. It's injected but the same principals apply. I used to fix airplanes and this is something my new mechanics sometimes struggled with. But, usually the light bulb would eventually turn on. Finesse not brute force saves the day.
Great vedio man👍👍 I have a question that you may be able answer..I have a 2017 883 iron that I am converting from efi to carburetor. I was wondering if you might know the proper intake manifold that will fit

I am a mechanic. My specialty is helicopters. Mr. Conley everything you said made perfect sense in the mechanical world. I can attest that when you have to put a panel on and it has over 40 screws. Its best to get them all threaded before sucking everything together or you might have some holes not line up.
Of course a lot of people don't even know what side of a washer is supposed to go under the bolt head/hardware. Wait washers have different sides. I get that a lot. Yes bevel against hardware.

I just got my heads back from having compression releases installed in my '97 Softail. It started just fine before I removed the heads. Now it won't start at all, not getting fuel to the carb. I filled the float bowl by hand. With the enricher open it won't start but backfires loudly through the front cylinder. I'm thinking I may have a vacuum leak at the intake manifold. What do you think?
Will this seal compensate for any head or cylinder milling?

Have you seen an issue with the 07 throttle body models? After torquing the TB it can still be moved either way
Can you show the dimension of the intake manifold of a Harley pan head along with the head spigots were the o ring fits.
I torqued my intake manifold bolts the best I could without stripping the little tiny cut off piece of 1/4 in with the wrench but the manifold still moves around when I mount the carb.
I’m about to tackle one this weekend

Great video my friend, but I'm trying to find a video of doing the same with a fuel injected manifold while on the bike. Pretty easy on the bench. Do you know of any?

I am getting ready to do this job on my 99 FLSTF fatboy and i really don't see fitting the carb on a loose manifold and getting everything lined up and then tightening bolts with the tank and frame in the way.

Hey, thanks for the response, going to definitely look into a membership. As for the repair, I am doing that today as soon as the parts come in on UPS. I think I am going to make some alignment marks on the manifold itself and flanges, probably take some pictures and remove it. Then install and align manifold with new gaskets and then put all the bolts in and get them a little snug, then install carb/backing plate and snug the back bolts down a little more and then pull the carb off and hope everything stays in place or at least close and then use my alignment marks to get it tightened. My service manual doesn't cover this repair so your vids are a real help in getting an idea on how to do some of these repairs. Thanks for the links.
Shane, have you used the intake gaskets with the thin lip on them? I was wondering if they sealed better. What do you think? James gaskets has them but have never seen anyone use them in any videos. Later, Rick.

I've never seen these "blue" ones. My first reaction is anything with a "lip" could cause a restriction in airflow (assuming it could squeeze inward). Not against new and better parts but for the record, I have never and I mean never had an HD intake leak doing EVERYTHING I do in my video...I will ask around out of curiousity!

I checked on the gaskets with a pal of mine I trust and he said he only uses those when a customer refuses to replace a bad (warped) manifold or flanges...lol buys he a little insurance and the performance loss wouldn't be noticed...He is a machinist so I shared this video with him too...I'm going to make it for my lathe!
What is that second tool called to tighten the Allen screws on the manifold I need to pick one up but I don’t know what it is

Yes they same size. They should be 1/4 allen head bolts and about an 1" long.
I just assembly, carburateur with air plate, than assembly the V manifold on the carburateur, all in my hand… before that I have inserted the two bottom screws on cylinder, I think that’s why we have a slot and a hole on the two flanges… be carefull than inserting the two screws on carburateur side… then screws will be easily tightening by hand… In my opinion the slots on the flange are there for that, to assembly all togheter, I mean carburateur + air plate + manifold + flanges

That's how I broke the carburetor.89 sportster. It bolts on with a top and bottom bolt. A big chunk broke off from the bottom. But I don't really like the slip on style carbs.

Now I know why my manifold will not seal. After tightening, the manifold moves easily side to side and rotates up and down. Nothing locking anything in there. I wonder what's wrong. It's like the seals were too small or something.

He just returned from overseas training techs and his inbox is slammed with requests. He is scheduling time each day again to answer techline orders. He does not have the bandwidth to provide free email replies as his schedule is full with shop customers, training schedules, and one on ones.

Leave jug bolts and head bolts loose make sure intake is level and sealed before all is torqued. I'm a 70 yr old machinst Harley Mech. Never use silicone products.

@@How2Wrench Silicone will not break down in oil so if it comes loose, (most use to much) it will impede oil flow, especially in oil pump.

@@How2Wrench Gasket cinch, 3 way seal and various uses of diff kinds of loctite for different applications are learned thru years of exp. Leaky bikes are a mechanics failure to learn the basics.
For anyone asking if this can be done with the engine in the bike YES you can. With a regular allen wrench! Remove the carb and intake completely. Remove the rear bolt of your gas tank and lift it as high as it can go and put something between it and the frame so it stays up. ( I shoved rags underneath it ) You will have plenty of room to remove the bolts to the intake manifold on the carb side. Onto the horn side now. Remove the horn. Next remove the piece that holds the horn, choke cable etc. There are two bolts that go into the engine. That’s what is holding it on. There is also a bolt on top you will remove. Three bolts total and that metal piece will come off. Also remove your spark plug cable to the front cylinder for extra room. This will allow enough room on this side to remove the remaining 2 bolts to the intake manifold. IT IS TIGHT. Not just the room but the bolts in general. It is tricky but it CAN be done using a regular Allen wrench. There is enough room to remove these bolts. Be patient and make sure the Allen head is completely in the bolt before loosening and tightening. Take plenty of pictures so you remember where stuff was connected and what bolts go to what. Any questions feel free to message me! Hope this helps anyone wondering. I have done it myself with success.
Also a few more tips. When breaking free these bolts USE gloves. Good gloves that you ride motorcycles with. When breaking these bolts free you can easily cut yourself on the sharp edges of the engine (from experience). All the tools you’ll need are 1/2 inch sockets or wrenches, 9/16s socket or wrenches, and a 1/4 inch Allen preferably a longer one not the little ones you get from ikea stores. (Tools not including what you need to remove the carb and intake). I have socket Allen wrenches that I did not use. Just a simple Allen wrench. Also make sure you have 2 wrenches or sockets of each size. Some of these bolts/nuts will spin without having a wrench on the other side.

15 street glide shakes bad when you pull in clutch to free drift or to slow down.stop at a light in gear at idle and shakes way more than normal, doesn't seem to backfire or pop through the intake..bike only has 6200 miles on it.

Hmmm...Interesting question for sure. We have some students that do wear them. I tried for years and do not care for how many times a piece tears off and is prone to contaminating the work. There is surely times when they are handy and needed.
+Shane Conley There is a company called Grease Monkey that makes nitrile gloves which are 5x's stronger than the regular medical gloves, I have a box of them so i should know.
So, you basically have to pull the engine out of the frame to replace the intake seals, because coming in from the top is impossible with the frame, and carb and breather In place.
