    I just put one of these babies on my '99 Softail Custom, replacing the stock CV carb. That booger fired right up like it's never done before. Still dialing in the mixture, but I'm super impressed so far. I used this vid along w/ the instruction package that came with the kit. For the manifold part I used an extended ball-end 1/4" Allen on the right side only to get them snug; The clearances/ angles were too steep to tighten them both all the way. I used a regular 4" Allen ground down about 1/4" for the rest of that work. To get to the two carb bolts around the other side I had to drop the horn and bracket w/ the VOES/ choke. No special tools were used for the project. Thanks for the presentation.

    Hi, I already installed the hi-4n s & s ignition and the harley worked on the first attempt. I have an evolution from 1998. I would like to ask two questions:
    1- After the ignition is installed, can I try different advance rates? or do I have to always calibrate from the beginning by putting the piston in tdc?
    2- If black smoke comes out of the exhaust from time to time, is it a tunning ignition problem, or the carburetor?
    Thank you

    @79FatStrat Před 7 lety

    I'm restoring a '92 FatBoy and the S&S E went on today. The rear of the bracket for the horn, choke, gas line and VOS doesn't clear the intake manifold. It looks in the video like you have the VOS free standing on a short section of vacuum line. If that's the case, my problem is solved. Also, the throttle cables are tight up against the bottom of the tank where they come out of the bracket. Will this lead to a problem or is this normal. Thanks for posting this video. It is a great help!

    • @SSCycleInc
      @SSCycleInc  Před 7 lety

      Yes, we connected the VOES with a short piece of hose and you can generally zip tie it to the frame or something close to it. The switch is really light so it doesn't need a lot of support. The cables touching the tank should not be a problem unless they are kinked. No sharp bends!

    Hello Bruce, I purchased a beautiful 98 Springer softail that had a Hyper charger on it, the look was terrible and so was the performance so I purchased a S&S Super E shorty installed it myself with your help and the directions that came with it and I am very pleased, I have dialed it in to my ear but I will be taking it to Tilly HD in Statesville N.C. for a Dyno run to fine tune it, my only concern at this point is that there appears to be about a 1/2 inch slack in the return cable ?, the throttle snaps back as it should but when I adjust the slack out of the return cable the throttle tightens up, is the slack in the return cable normal, Thanks and l really appreciate the videos its great free education !!

    • @SSCycleInc
      @SSCycleInc  Před 8 lety +1

      +Tim Pope There has to be some slack in the cables to allow them to move freely, but 1/2" seems like a lot. Have you lubed your cables? Try some of that spray lube and one of those dandy little cable oiling widgets. The other thing to look for is a kink or sharp bend in the cable routing. If you can't get it to work right, have Tilly's look at it when you take it in for your dyno run. It never hurts that get another set of eyes on it!

    Any way to eliminate drawing crankcase vapors into intake tract?

    • @SSCycleInc
      @SSCycleInc  Před 8 lety +3

      It certainly can be done. It's just an exercise in plumbing. There are even kits you can buy. The question is why do you want to. If there is oil vapor coming out of the crankcase breather, why not just send it through the engine to get rid of it. On the other hand, a lot of oil out of the breather is probably a symptom of another problem that requires attention. You could call our tech dept for some suggestions. 608-627-1497.

      We assume that you are referring to the enrichment device that you pull up for starting. You can get that at any S&S dealer. Check the dealer locator on our website at www.sscycle.com for a dealer near you. If you have a Super B or D carb you will need to buy the whole assembly. The part number is 11-2084, and if it's a Super E or G carb you can just replace the spring the part number for the spring is 11-2340.

    Rode the WG about 10 miles yesterday and the carb was leaking gas out the overflow tube while the bike was running. Switched the bike off and carb still leaking. Turning the fuel valve off is the only way to stop the steady flow of gas going out the tube. WG parked for now. Any helpful comments ? Thanks, Butch.

    • @SSCycleInc
      @SSCycleInc  Před 7 lety +1

      There is obviously a problem with the fuel inlet needle and seat, but there are a lot of things that can cause that. First thing of course, is don't run it like that!
      You can check to see that there isn't some foreign material preventing the needle from seating (did you just paint your tank), or if for some reason, the float is sticking in the up position. Your best bet is to call our tech dept at 608-627-1497 and let our tech guys help you sort this out. I noticed the last three screws for the S&S air filter chrome cover did not have any loctite or threadlocker applied to them. Other videos have mentioned to use it on those screws. How important is it for those screws to have some threadlocker applied or is it even necessary?

    • @obfuscated3090
      @obfuscated3090 Před 5 lety

      It's an VERY good idea to use threadlocker on those screws. Consider it mandatory. I've used red Loctite since the 1980s on Bs and later E's. On the B you can drill straight through the standoff because the back of the air filter housing is flat and use through bolts with lock nuts (lock washers are trash, ask NASA).. It would be nice if the areas on the E housing were flat to permit that. Hint, hint....

      @SSCycleInc  Před 8 lety

      +Patrick Favors If you're talking about the fitting that bolts to the cylinder head in 1991-later Sportster models and 1993 and later big twins it's called a banjo fitting the part number is 17-0350. If you have an earlier engine that breathes directly out of the crankcase the stock fitting is generally used so it's not included in the kit. If you have the installation instructions there are line drawings and parts lists in the back. If you don't have the instructions, you can download them from your website www.sscycle.com.
