1990 Electra glide with super e carbutetor, on hot days at operating temperature the idle drops below 500rpm causing the oil light to remain on at idle. The bike rides and idles fine any other time when not up to hot temp. The problem persists even after turning up the idle. Im wondering if it could be loading up or if the reset procedure would help. Recently purchased the bike from an estate but i do know it has bigger jugs and a slight cam installed at around 50k with currently 86k on the dial. Replaced a metal fuel line with rubber line suspecting possible gas boiling but this did not resolve either.

nothing in the world sounds better than a British Parallel-twin, it is the soundtrack to my youth, being 65 now I had two older brothers who both rode British motorcycles through the 1960s, REs, Cammando, Triumphs, BSAs, only ending with Kawasaki's Z 1000 being made, so the sound a 650 twin pulling away up a hill is something I've head 1000s of times, fell asleep to and woken by.

Late i know but, im trying to find out how stepped pipes work. Increasing the inner diameter slowes the flow, as decreasing the diameter would speed up the flow (Bernoulies principle). Is this not the case? If it is, why not decrease the diameter to get better, faster exhaust?

We’ve used all these concepts for decades. The HP Plus baffles from chrome works actually are the same , or very similar to, the type many performance mufflers used by big exhaust makers. Including S&S, Python, etc. you can even cut them in half and get a pretty loud , but no blat growl that works well. Going with big diameter pipes makes it even worse, people love those 2” and 2 1/4” pipes, which suck across the board. Oh there are guys that swear they work on THEIR bike, but they don’t. Running and running well are two different things. The best way we e found is , cut the drags off square at 28-30” in length, then add the HP plus baffle, or half of it about an inch in from the end. The up side of running half is, there’s enough baffle left you can weld a tab on and give your buddy the other half! Plus they sound beefier. Let’s face it, if you run an older bike, there are few to no options for exhaust out there, drags are the only option, so this makes them work damn good. Will they Dyno as high as a performance exhaust system? Doubtful, but, they’ll be as close as you can get when options are limited or looks are paramount. The old “can opener” baffles are crap, but the HP Plus baffles actually work AND sound really good , without the “ blat” open drags are known for. I’ve even offered to buy them back if the guy wasn’t happy with them, and haven’t had to yet. They do come in 1 3/4” and 2” size, but the 1 3/4” pipe is really the way to go , until your running a drag bike wide open at the track. But the HP Plus baffles will help even a 2” on the street, just not as well as a proper exhaust. For around 50.00 a pair why not beat the drag pipe issues?

Im doing this the old fashioned way by reading plugs and cant dial in each jet at a time, would it be a safe bet that after plugs look too lean to bump up one on both jets?

They’re right, it doesn’t sound like a Harley. Before I was motorcycle ‘literate’, I used to think these bikes sounded nice with aftermarket exhausts. Though it’s definitely nicer than the stock exhaust.

Would you have to replace gaskets, orings, etc. after opening the carb? Also what is the non-Dyno-Tune way of jetting? Adjust and ride, repeat as necessary?

I'm late to this party, but it sounds even better with the DB baffle removed. 3 bolts, 10 minutes, and much better sound.

Is there a hole in the tab for the brake pedal pad like the OEM stuff? If so, can the rubber one be cut off and another aftermarket pedal pad installed?

I’m having trouble figuring out what size main jet to use. Where I live the elevation is about 6,400 feet. Any suggestions?
