So many people post on you tube and get long winded, talking forever about nothing. Brian you did a great job, down and dirty got all the info I needed to get the job done right. Thanks.
I followed this mod and I waited a couple months to give my response and here it is: If I had four hands, I'd give it four thumbs up! Thanks for this vid!
Thanks brother. Been fighting my cv carb for the last few weeks. Taking your confidence and skill and trying this evening. Update: almost a year later and my bike has never ran so smooth it cranked so easily. I sure as hell appreciate this my friend!
Thanks Brian with your straightforward no bullshit explanation you gave me the confidence to have a go at this myself. Looking forward to tearing up the new season here in Ireland!
I did exactly what you said to my wife’s sporty . Wow what a difference on the outcome. Her bike runs like a striped ass ape! Thank you so much for your expertise. Watching you hands on and explaining in detail what to and how to do it. You saved me Happy wife happy life.
Thanks Brian. I followed your instructions from this video and my carb works really good now. I was having all kinds of issues before and could not get my carb to run the way it's supposed to. I had a grin from ear to ear when I fired it up for the first time after these mods. It breathes like an athlete and I gained so much power. Thanks again. I wish I could buy you a beer.
Brian, thanks for your video. My '02 nighttrain was finally giving me troubles starting as my 10 yr old battery finally needed replacing. So I had no start/no idle issues. Your video was tremendous for helping me get the carb parts reassembled and having it running nicely again. Once I saw your details like filing slide and the pinhole to atomize, I knew I'd get it running again. Also, knowing about the pilot/slowjet removal got me able to clean it out and good as new. Thanks
The original 1988 sportster needle is what you want to put in your bike. Reason being for that year only there was no accelerator pump so the needle was much richer. Here is the part number (N65C, HD #27094-88) No need to shim. Also by following his procedure you will be running at best optimal performance with air cleaner and pipes great video great explanation!
Finally finished these modifications on my 2003 super glide. Carb had some aftermarket parts (plastic slide, crazy thin needle, short spring). I was having some slight throttle backfired through the carb. Ran a 190 main and a 48 pilot. RUNS perfect now. Thank you for laying this out so simply.
Thanks Brian. Thought I'd never get rid of the carb farts. I tore out the parts from the SE jet kit and went back to stock parts with your mods. My 1997 Sporty 1200 runs better than new. Open air cleaner and straight pipes with reversion cones.
I saved all the stock parts after I had installed a Screamin' Eagle jet kit. I went back to those parts and used the washers which were in the stock setup or had come with the SE kit. In Brian's video he mentions the approximate washer thickness and type of washer.
Today I did this mods to the carb. in my 2001 dyna super glide and the results were amazing. It now has a great low idle great acceleration and great top end power. Thank you so much for sharing this info. with us.
Good video and information. I remember in the early '90's people were taking nearly new CV's off to install S&S and mikuni's. I bought up a bunch of take off CV's as they are my favorite. I have them on everything. A CV really made my old ironhead a one kicker when warm and it runs very good for a 44 year old bike.
Great video. Excellent results on my 01 1200 sporty. Wow what a difference this simple mod has made. Thanks Brian, cant wait for more videos. Keep up the good work.
a ton of information in the smallest space... I did this on my twin cam and it improved from every angle. thank you very much. this dude is a strong individual to say the least.
I just installed an OEM CV carb on my 2001 Stock FXDXT-Sport with all the mods, adjustments and replacements recommended on this video. Bike started immediately and beside the idle being at 1600RPM, there was absolutely no need for any further adjustment. The bike runs very strong with no hesitation, popping and farting and is ready to go at a breath of pressure on the throttle - Thanks for the best CV Carb video on CZcams!
A lot of sportsters hiccup and cough due to poor fuel/air mixture. hands down best solution on the net for this problem. follow instructions precise. Cheers Brian, good on ya for sharing! must have read 40 blogs and watched 15 videos before watching this one and #problemsolved
Did all the mods except replacing the adjustable needle.. (no one had one) so I adjusted the needle up one notch. My trike now runs awesome.. Thanks Brian.
Just done this mod to my twin cam. What a difference. Wish I'd seen it before wasting £60 on a dyno jet kit. Which I've now removed .The only thing I used out of the dyno kit were the two small spacer washers to go under the standard needle! Brilliant instruction. Greetings from West Wales. UK. Mike.
Brian I've done a few now and all work great. I'm putting one on my shovelhead now. I'll let you know how I like it. Thanks for a easy to follow video.
Hi Brian, Hope you are having a good day sir. I just wanted to say thank you. I did everything you said and my bike runs amazing brother. Thank you! Have a great day! Mark
Very Nice tutorial, i did this with my cv 40 on a 883 i put in 160main and 45 slow as you said and one washer of 0.58mm under the needle and now she purs like a kitten. Big difference in response ++ on this video. Cheers from belgium m8
Thanks for the Great video, I have a 93 Evo Electric Classic, took it apart did everything you said, the guys at old glory Harley parts store didn't know what a slow jet was, but i got them straight put the 45 in and Man she runs so smooth and idols real low. Thanks,
just done this mod on the weekend, mine had the adjustable needle which i swapped for a 88 sportster needle and put 2 washers underneath. As soon as i got to the end of the road it ran better than i ever before... thanks for the video, you know your stuff buddy :-)
Did these mods to my CV carb and no.....more farting through the carb. I have been trying to fix this for 4 yrs.The acceleration is awesome. Thanks for the info!
fxdlowrider1 Love to hear this! I learned this from a old timer. If you ever buy fuel injected or go large motor with carb. definitely get a custom map or carb tune on a dyno for some great results!
I've had my 78 shovelhead sense 85, (HS graduation present to myself), and for the past 10 years or so I've been tossing the thought of changing the carb, about ago my brother handed me a CV.. thank you for your video, you answered some questions..
great video! I have a 2005 harley 883 i ordered 1 size over both jets, 2 needle washers (very thin), vance and hines slip ons and k&n replacement filter, cut 1 turn off the spring! i didnt re-drill the slide hole! mixture is 2 3/4 out i will update how it runs once the last few parts arrive. thanks for this video its the only one with so much detail
Brian. Great step by step. Got a 88 cv HD carb that has gotten the full rebuild with stock parts. Installed on a xlh 1974 1000cc. with stack 2'' air cone, 2-1 exhaust rebuild engine with 0.40 oversize piston 8-1 comp. Slow 48, main 190 I can only run with 48 slow, anything below that kills the engine, but runs great with the choke on. It still stumbles and dies with Slow48 at a 1000rpm. So need to have it at a high idle 1500rpm. Tried Slow 42-44-45-46-48. You might be able to give directions befor i spend 250 bucks on a bench test. regards Lasse Denmark
I did your job........Kawi, 800 classic. Awesome, smoothed her out. Holding throttle at cruising speed i was getting pulsing. Now it's steady. feels good. goes like stink. "Thank-you" Brian. PS, check the intake manifold boot good. My clamps were loose and am sure was leaking in some air. I saved mega. shop bucks. $$
Well Brian....I'm doing this procedure today. My carb was previously rejetted for the pipes. Carb was ready for a rebuild anyway, due to mileage and I'm going to go with your procedure here. I now have the freer flowing air cleaner. Hope it all comes out ok. I'll post my findings.
Thumbs up 1 thought this was the best, straight foward video and because you did not state the measurements in 1000th of an inch, bore... but know you make it look simple but it's a tedious task. Easy-to-use rebuild info you'd need if you need to richen up for what you mentioned. Thanks and safe riding .
Looks like it's been awhile since Brian Thomas has checked this but I'll take a chance. I have a stock 1997 Heritage Softail Classic with Screamin' Eagle slip-ons and K&N air cleaner. I just bought this bike out of California (low elevation) it has 15,000 miles. I live in northwestern Nevada (east side of the Sierra's) at 4750 elevation and ride that elev. to sometimes over mtn passes up to 8000 or more elev. I will eventually tour out of area and hit lower elevation as well. Pilot jet is a 45, main is a 175. Throttle seems kind of sluggish about mid throttle, response is about the same. PS, thanks for the great video. ps, I need to do this
Brian I have 96 evo Electra glide standard. Bike starts every time no choke but on highway rides seems to build up a lot of carbon Does not have the top end that it should. Plugs look good but exhaust is blackened. Diesels when shut off. On most recent four hour ride she started to ping a little when rolling on in fifth gear.
followed your video to the letter - '95 Road King with V & H pipes with wrapped baffles - took a sawzall to the stock air box to get more air in - EV27 cam - thanks to you, the bike has never run better - so, thank you ... Bruce
I ended up getting a CV Performance kit. 185 Main 46 slow and their needle. Still have to tune it a little but it seems to pull pretty darn good for an old Evo. I had it static timed with the electronic ignition...but gonna put a light to it...oh the float height i have to do that...Im almost positive that's not right...thanks
Good Job, I would just mention that no two engines or bikes are ever the same and some variations and final tuning is important to getting these bars to run well and not fart..However when they are correct they will run very well !
This guy/video is spot on!! I followed his directions to a T on my old bagger EVO with a mild cam and true duals. It runs great, has good power, and when I checked the plugs they were a perfect pencil brown. All total cost me about 20 bucks for jets and the brass fuel inlet. Thanks bud !!!
This is for stock motors with air cleaner and pipes only. Big bore,cams,heads... Requires different methods. Thing to remember. Carb's are good low and mid or mid and high usually. If going big motor, go with a Mikuni flat slide to relieve this problem. Thanks!
Hope to not sound stupid but when I pulled my carb apart on my 03 xl1200C the main jet was a 160 and I may have misunderstood as to what the XL or EVO should have but I assume I have an EVO motor being an 03? I performed all the steps in your video and the bike is much better at idle and off idle now, just seems to not pull as hard on higher end and I wonder if I should put a 165 main in instead of the 160? Thanks for the awesome video, it really makes me want to ride my bike more...Phil
Thanks Brian, your videos are excellent and never any bullshit. You also helped with cam install on evolution. One question, should main jet be changed if I put in Andrews EV13? I'm about to start carb rebuild. I also picked up Sportster needle. I have .025 shims AKA #4 brass. So, use 2 of these washer/shims?
Hopefully with my late reply you have it going. I would actually recommend going to a Mikuni flat slide also or larger CV. I didn't see ignition module in your list which will definitely be a problem. Also be sure the VOES is working, Quick check is disconnect the purple wire going to it under left of tank usually and idle should drop.
I've had great luck with this until I ran into one without a stock needle. Where can I get a stock needle? What are the markings on a stock needle for an 02 sportster?
Absolutely awesome video!!! Any leads on a solid rebuild kit that will include everything needed? I spent a few hours poking around today and haven't found a definitive do-it-all kit...
Very clear and succinct presentation. So much info in a brief video; I think I felt my brain melt just a little. Curious about jet sizes at elevation. I live at ~5,350 feet and sometimes ride in mountains over passes that are 10,000 feet. Haven't had any problems with jets currently installed (1993 HD XL 1200 modified by HD mechanic while in for service when I first moved here 14 years ago). Just wondering?
great video very helpful thanks but u got anything as far as swapping out a c.v to another carb like a mikuni for an 06 California custom sporty?? thanks boss.
great video. very informative. going to use the info on my 79 xl. you said a 45 pilot jet and 160 main jet would run good? i have drag pipes and a small circular 4" air cleaner.
Hi Brian, Great stuff here! Off topic slightly but I’m sure you’ll have the answer - with with this mod, SE air box and exhaust would you keep the baffles in for back pressure? Cheers, James. UK
Nice no bull chit vid. Hope you make more. If you do could you take that carb and do the J B WELD on the manifold for use on an old shovelhead? What needs to be done diffrently to put a CV on a 75 shovel? Knees in the breeze
so i have a 02 sportster 1200 i'm getting ignition ping under heavy load I replaced my pilot jet to a 45 but my main was a 185 I bought the bike completely stock nothing has ever been done to it before i got it i drilled out the baffles my question is should I go down to a 170 main or would that lean it out too much
I am putting a cv carb on my 74ci shovelhead... do you recommend the same mods or will I need to run different jetting for the smaller motor? I believe the motor has head work and cams but I am not positive
I have an 01 sportster sport, with the dual plug heads, more aggressive cams and all that good stuff, the dealers claim the stock main jet is 195. It has a lots of low end power but up top it bogs, could this be due to the injector pump. It seemed kinda weak, or is the main jet too high
Great Video I have a 04 sportster 1200 with screaming eagle exhaust and filter. Will this modification work with my bike? she runs rough, running lean. I put a 48 slow and 180 main, little better but still rough out of 1st . please help me out..
So many people post on you tube and get long winded, talking forever about nothing. Brian you did a great job, down and dirty got all the info I needed to get the job done right. Thanks.
pro trick: watch movies on flixzone. Been using it for watching a lot of movies lately.
@Kenneth Lian yup, have been using flixzone for years myself =)
Awesome video. No stupid intro, no needless talking, no bullshit. THIS is what youtube should be. Good job dude.
and no stupid music

By far the best carb tuning video I have found. Thank you so much, fixed the problem I was having. My bike has never run so well.
a ton of information in the smallest space... I did this on my twin cam and it improved from every angle. thank you very much. this dude is a strong individual to say the least.
I did this mod to my 1999 twin cam Dyna and it worked great. Thing runs better than it ever has before. Thanks for the video.

I did all of this and my bike is so fast! I can't even stay on the bike when I punch it I slide off the damn seat! Thanks Brian!
Hi Brian,

Just finished a 2000 X1 Lightening with Thunderstorm head transplanted into a nice chopper frame and did these mods - it runs perfect thanks again!
Brian, just completed this mod on my 2003 dynawide glide. Amazing improvement in response and power! Thanks for the great video.
used this video for the carb on my 97 Sportster 1200 custom, runs great! awesome video.
I have a 02 wide glide and I did what you showed us and my bike is running like a champ thanks man
just done this mod on the weekend, mine had the adjustable needle which i swapped for a 88 sportster needle and put 2 washers underneath. As soon as i got to the end of the road it ran better than i ever before... thanks for the video, you know your stuff buddy :-)
John bateman what type of washer did you use?
Thank you for the vid! Works great! Much better mid throttle response now, had rejetted and that helped but this made a huge difference.
your the man!!!! saved me 70 bucks!!!! thanks again!!!
Excellent. Very well done. Highly informative and to the point.
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. You'd make a great teacher...
Jimmy Sabia how did everything turn out?
Thanks Brian. Just the video I was looking for.
Brian. Great step by step.
Got a 88 cv HD carb that has gotten the full rebuild with stock parts.
Installed on a xlh 1974 1000cc. with stack 2'' air cone, 2-1 exhaust
rebuild engine with 0.40 oversize piston 8-1 comp.
Slow 48, main 190
I can only run with 48 slow, anything below that kills the engine, but runs great with the choke on. It still stumbles and dies with Slow48 at a 1000rpm. So need to have it at a high idle 1500rpm. Tried Slow 42-44-45-46-48. You might be able to give directions befor i spend 250 bucks on a bench test.

Excellent mate. Just what I was looking for. Cheers for your help.
Best carb mod Vid,ive seen thanks for posting this !!
Thumbs up
1 thought this was the best, straight foward video and because you did not state the measurements in 1000th of an inch, bore... but know you make it look simple but it's a tedious task. Easy-to-use rebuild info you'd need if you need to richen up for what you mentioned. Thanks and safe riding .
Good video. Sounds like you know your stuff with these carbs
Does not have the top end that it should. Plugs look good but exhaust is blackened. Diesels when shut off. On most recent four hour ride she started to ping a little when rolling on in fifth gear.
Nice video...Considering a CV swap on an ironhead w baffled straights and aftermarket air cleaner from the Bendix. Just what I was lookin for.
Carbs are easy, but dang you made it look too easy! Good work.
Yes, follow the video. Stock main with 48 slow jet.Stock needle with two .030 washers.
cool vid, no B.S. no talking about crap,to the point and call it real.Respect Brother L.L.H&R!
Awesome reminds of cleaning and polishing bolt carrier groups in gas guns great info
replaced the 42 with a 45 and that did the trick. thanks for posting.
followed your video to the letter - '95 Road King with V & H pipes with wrapped baffles - took a sawzall to the stock air box to get more air in - EV27 cam - thanks to you, the bike has never run better - so, thank you ... Bruce
This guy really seems to know his shit. Thank you for your great help.
Thanks Brian , You have been a great help .
Awesome job Brian Thanks for a no bullshit tune!!!
Good Job, I would just mention that no two engines or bikes are ever the same and some variations and final tuning is important to getting these bars to run well and not fart..However when they are correct they will run very well !
great video. I'm not clear on the total thickness you added under the needle. was it a total of .030 or .060 ? thanks in advance.
What a rapid description ...that l am sure every shade tree mechanic absorbed
great video and straight to the point!!!
I own Olde Towne Cycle in Virginia. Thank you!
Best how video ive seen in a long while !!! Make some more !!!!!!!!
Awesome video thanks
We need more videos like this ! There's too much halfass ones on utube this video is great ! (:
Looking to do the same to a 1992 FXR super glide, do we use the same jets for this ???
Thnax
I did the two washers on the needle only, it kicks 20% better. Would like more if any?
This is for stock motors with air cleaner and pipes only. Big bore,cams,heads... Requires different methods. Thing to remember. Carb's are good low and mid or mid and high usually. If going big motor, go with a Mikuni flat slide to relieve this problem. Thanks!

Here I am ten years after the fact. Very interested in how to do this. Very clean Very thorough video thank you
Thanks Brian, your videos are excellent and never any bullshit.

It is from lean cough. Very normal on Sportsters and bikes with clogged slow jets.
Awesome video! Thanks
great video. very informative. going to use the info on my 79 xl. you said a 45 pilot jet and 160 main jet would run good? i have drag pipes and a small circular 4" air cleaner.
Hi Brian,
Great stuff here!
Off topic slightly but I’m sure you’ll have the answer - with with this mod, SE air box and exhaust would you keep the baffles in for back pressure? Cheers, James. UK
Nice no bull chit vid. Hope you make more.
If you do could you take that carb and do the J B WELD on the manifold
for use on an old shovelhead?
What needs to be done diffrently to put a CV on a 75 shovel?
Knees in the breeze
so i have a 02 sportster 1200 i'm getting ignition ping under heavy load I replaced my pilot jet to a 45 but my main was a 185 I bought the bike completely stock nothing has ever been done to it before i got it i drilled out the baffles my question is should I go down to a 170 main or would that lean it out too much
Hi, what’s the purpose for shortening the stock slide spring?
I am putting a cv carb on my 74ci shovelhead... do you recommend the same mods or will I need to run different jetting for the smaller motor? I believe the motor has head work and cams but I am not positive
can you list the parts needed for this? i ride a 2001 sportster xl1200c
why did you drill a larger hole in the slide?
Do you do any other wrenching and video? Like how you where to the point. Thank you I'm going to do this when I have the time
Would the jet size (45) work on a stock 1340 evo with bigger pipes?, great video thanks from the UK!
I have an 01 sportster sport, with the dual plug heads, more aggressive cams and all that good stuff, the dealers claim the stock main jet is 195. It has a lots of low end power but up top it bogs, could this be due to the injector pump. It seemed kinda weak, or is the main jet too high
Great Video
I have a 04 sportster 1200 with screaming eagle exhaust and filter. Will this modification work with my bike? she runs rough, running lean. I put a 48 slow and 180 main, little better but still rough out of 1st . please help me out..
