    Just my own personal run through on how I rebuild a my KEIHIN CV Carburetor that's I use on my Harley Davidson Sportster Chopper. Although I do use a Keihin CV Carburetor for every Harley Davidson I own. I have a CV Carburetor for my Heritage Softail and Electraglide. But this time, it's fixing issues on the Keihn CV Carburetor that's on the Sportster Chopper.

    The youngsters at my local Harley dealership should watch this. Watched a younger guy try and start a early 90s used bike. He didn't know what a choke was.

      @@wcraiderevo8078 haha. I went to see a bike with a friend. He was looking at getting an older Harley. It was advertised as would not start or run.
      The owner kept trying to. I noticed that the new unbranded carby was on upside down.
      A part of me wanted to buy the bike. But all I could think of was “what else isn’t right in this bike?”

      @@whatsstefon It is part of the reason why I pass on about 75% of the adds I see, of interest, on craigslist. People don't know what they have. It is either a scam or they have no clue how to take care of it. Most of the routine maintenance just takes a little time and willingness to get your hands dirty, case in point, the voltage regulator swap on my 97 Heritage, simple 15 minute job I crammed into an hour...took 45 minutes to find all of the correct tools, crimp, and electrical connector and those darn zip ties.

    There is a washer and o-ring in addition to the spring on the tip of the IMS screw.

    It looks like you might be missing a couple of parts on the CV. On the A/F idle screw there should be a washer and o-ring to seal that area on top of the spring. There's also a rubber boot that goes around the accelerator pump rod and connects to the carb to keep water and dirt out. If it was there I missed it when you put the bowl on. Congrats on the dirt pile!! Looking forward to more garage building content!

    this weekend I made a mount for my oil guage/mp3 player(old school) from aluminum. was using lacquer thinner and spray paint in the basement. my ole lady didn't complain at all..... true blessing. I usually spray outside but here in PA. the temperature was 20 degrees outside.

    Thanks for the CV Carb video. My 87 Low Rider has been "congested" for a while so I am going to order a rebuild kit and giver her a go. Congrats on getting the garage project started. I know you have to be looking forward to getting your scoots into a dry stable area. Keep the rubber side down and be safe out there.

    Heck yes Dirt is the beginning! I loved this video because this is what you do so well with old school bikes. My Vulcan has a carburetor and drum brakes in the back.. It's not a Harley but it is old school. I was a cars and coffee today and I had a lot of questions about it. There was a bunch of antique Indians and Harley's there. Old bikes are becoming a thing and it's about time. Thanks for the lesson on carb re-builds.

    Dad is gone now, he was a life long Harley rider and mechanic which he passed on to us. In 1972 he rebuilt a Honda in our living room because there was no garage in our Naval Housing Unit. I am pretty sure my parents relationship was a bit different after that bike rebuild! Good stuff Saddle Tramp! Subbed And Stay Well Man!

    Hey bro, thank you for the video! I've watched more than a couple this morning and you are the only person to explain about the lip of the diaphragms fitting into the grooves when reassembling, and many of those videos where done by HD service techs!     I liked the laid-back approach, and all of the basics you need to get by.
    Getting too high tech can be intimidating for people.
    If it's really crusty inside, soak it overnight in a mix of Cleaning Vinegar & water.
    You don't need a laboratory, the back porch will do 👍

    Should be a small O ring on the accelerator nozzle that seals against the carb body. Also should have been a small washer and O ring on the mixture screw.

      Your right. I went back and replaced it. As far as the mixture screw... beats me, but there wasn't an o-ring and washer with it. I would've figured there'd be one, but it seems to run just fine without it.

    Best thing I ever did was put a CV on my Shovel. Those tapered needle are the best, the newer style don't work as well. Nice rebuild video too! Don't think we've seen that smile for awhile...

    Great video and very helpful but these are Japanese carbs and while the screws may look like regular Phillips they're actually japan industry standard so to avoid chewing up the heads you really should use a J.I.S screwdriver-I know as I found out the hard way!

      That can be a pain sometimes. The manifold to head seals are delightful to install and have no leaking.

    Nice video, I’m still running the original Tillotson carb on my 69 FLH and it is a challenge at times just for parts. The leather Excelerator pump doesn’t do well with gas additives like Sea Foam. It just warms my heart when doing a carb and find where someone used pliers to disassemble it. Carbs have become a lost art.

    I love your videos brother they're awesome I got 79 Ironhead 51 sprocet 21 sprocket changing the back sprocket out to a 48 tooth because of the video I watched I'm doing this thank you hopefully it gives me some longer legs for my iron head

    I'm about to rebuild the Bendix Zenith on my '72 FLH for the 3rd time in 30yrs.
    If you don't have a gallon of carb soak solvent and an air compressor setup, you can use a can of carb cleaner and one of those cans of compressed air for cleaning computer keyboards.
    Fuel injection can't even come close to producing the classic Harley idle that a carb can.
    Good informative video, and I'll be happy to see you in a shop.

    When I worked in a dealership many moons ago we had good results with cv carbs by using 48 pilot jets, 160 -180 main jets, drilling out the emulsion tube slightly, drilling out the return hole in the slide slightly, shorten the spring by 1 and a half and then stretching it back to the original length.

    Great vid mate. Always heaps of fun dodging the weather😂😂 I was hoping you had a dual carb setup. I jz bought two new Kiehin cvks for my vtwin ( shameful jappa), however they’re joined together in such a way on the bike where one carb services each piston and are joined together with shafts passing thru from one side of one carb to the other, Any ideas where or who’s vid I could watch for a step by step? I’m also not sure if I’ll be needing any special tools to complete this job. I guess the automatic answer most folk would say is jz do the reverse of the strip down of the current two carbs…this would be a great option if I wasn’t certain they’ve been backyarded before sometime prior to the bike being mine. For example, the float bowl drain plugs were nearly tight like wheel nuts and…..they don’t even match🤔 You have a merch store man?

    So I was! Gonna rebuild my cv carb at my comfortable well lighted kitchen table in my house. However my wife was at the table as I watched this video and heard you say you decided not to do that because of the gas smell filling the house and how you lady would trip.     I bought a set of gunsmithing screwdrivers. They are perfect for carb work! And not that expensive. You can find the exact size driver for all those little brass jets.

    If U get trash in the jets or ideal port U can use a torch tip cleaner or microw drill bit that hand drill clogged holes in torch tips. They work well to get trash out.

    Awesome video very, very helpful. I just have one question if your accelerator pump goes bad will it prevent the bike from starting ? I'm only asking because mine went bad and I replaced it and everything is fine now. But all the other videos I've seen say the pump is just to get you over the hump from idle. IDK

      It should still start. Won't be any good for acceleration.

    Yayyy!! That’s great news on the garage. CV’s are a nice user friendly part to rebuild, well for people like us who work on their own scoot. I’m up in the White Mountains NH right now, North Conway to be exact and it has rained 3 days straight, hopefully it doesn’t happen to me and the Mikuni lol Honestly I can’t remember a July 4th weekend where the weather has been raining and 40’s, it’s usually always nice but that’s New England for ya. Glad you got the Tramp up and running Corey, or I’m assuming you did. Hope you and the Missus have a great 1776💥🇺🇸

    Back in 1982 I had a 1976 XLCH ... Local bike speed shop worked the engine and turned it into a real fire breather... after getting the motor back I had it up and running... only problem was that garbage Kiehn carb. The bike would sputter around 2800 to 3200rpm.My man at the shop suggested I get a Bendix carb with an adjustable main jet.... After install the bike ran like drag bike... loud because I had str as ight thru drag pipes... it was bored 30 over and ran circles around the other fast bikes.... That bike started on the first kick around 500 times ...one weekend I pulled into our local bars summer picnic. 5 hrs when I'm ready to leave it wouldn't start because the points had closed..... ha ha... a quick fix on the spot and she fired on the 1st. Kick as usual. I swear by that brand of carb.. Be safe and well..

    None of these videos on cv carbs show setting correct float level. I know how, but I'm sure many don't know how to make this important adjustment. He didn't show putting the washer and O ring on the idle mixture screw. Spring first then washer and finally O ring. Screw all the way in till it lightly reaches bottom then back out 1 1/2 turns. Final adjustment done on warmed up idling engine. Most likely will need backing out another full turn for best idle performance.

    Hey Corey , them emulsion tubes can get fouled quite easily over time , the water entrainment probably helped lol. I think that air filter is a Drag Specialties product if memory serves me , same as what I had on my 1980 flh as a aftermarket add on . I suppose the tramp ran great after the cleaning ? I have to find the next video when time permits adios bro !

    I love all my Keihin CV (Constant Velocity) Carburettors, (fitted on all later model Honda Bikes) compared to the old slide carburettors!! The CV version compensates for changes in air pressure, altitude, etc. They also include a nice accelerator pump for rapid acceleration! when required! They are much more fun than the latest, fancy, snazzy, EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) devices...I reckon! If you want to adjust for a very slow tick-over, (and starve the engine of oil...LOL...), you need a proper "carburettor"...trust me! Take care, all!....😊...😊...!

    I have dual Keihns on my Kawasaki and I have a short stumble around 3500-ish's but it starts, idles, wide open great, I've cleaned and cleaned em let alone Lucas brand seafoam stuff in Multiple tanks but I just can't get that stumble out and really not lookin forward to BUYING new ones

    The ethanol in our fuel attracts moisture from the air which then separates out as water at the bottom of the tank - its a problem of ethanol that affects all motors including new ones !
