CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sheriff Buford (Jackie Gleason) bullies some teen car thieves stopped along the highway and receives information about the Bandit's car.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"Smokey," aka Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason), is the prospective father-in-law of unwilling bride Carrie (Sally Field). The Bandit (Burt Reynolds), a maverick racecar driver, makes an 80,000-dollar bet that he can transport a shipment of Coors beer from Texarkana, TX, to Atlanta within 28 hours. It's important to note that in 1977, it was illegal to sell the Coors brand east of the Mississippi River without a permit; if we don't note that, then the plot won't make sense at times. Already in danger of arrest from redneck lawmen like Buford T. Justice, Bandit furthers his chances at a stiff jail term when he offers a ride to Carrie, who hopes to escape her unwanted wedding to Justice's boy. The rest of the film is one long chase; not quite as subtle as a Road Runner/Coyote cartoon, not quite as restrained as a Three Stooges comedy. Universally panned by critics upon its first release, Smokey and the Bandit reportedly pulled in just under $126 million and led to two sequels.

Legend says those 3 guys are still keeping their hands on the car to this day.
I said that last night
It is speculated that they are thinking about going home, or going to eat, or... other things. But they're not doing it.
In Vermont til this day, there's 3 guys in a car greening out and having panic attacks being interrogated with littering and?
It’s true I drove past yesterday
And they're still thinking about it
I love how he unsnapped his holster
@zeake13 I'm sure, considering he'd been sheriff all those years, he thought it paid to be safe than sorry. When you're any law enforcement officer, you never know just what kind of situation you could be called to deal with and, most important, the people involved!
And his smile...
😂😂😂😂
"Click....Hold up on that car wash gentlemen!"... LMFAO!
Lmao*
LMFAO is a band
Yeah Yeah...when he said that i fell on floor. hahaha
The chicken shit grin on his face
Roll up on gravel, opens car door, steps out, closes door, walks on gravel, opens lighter, ignites, and all they hear is the click of the lighter closing. Genius!
Gleason's body language and approach and his walk are priceless. I don't know if this can be taught in any acting school. Every movement from getting out of the car to the end was like poetry in motion. Rumor has it that he ad-libbed the whole movie. I could watch this over and over again.
His acting and the tuba music were perfect together in this scene.
JR R Yes, the totally over-the-top music (which is hilarious, btw) perfectly underscores the Sheriff’s tough guy attitude and his sense of self-importance.
Not thr whole movie, just lots of it
He did. Also some of the actors couldn't keep a straight face during the filming
Even how he got their attention by snapping his Zippo lighter closed. This guy was an artist.
"That's an attention getter." 🤣 LMAO
Him emerging from that car with that music announcing his presence is really a great movie moment.
Just the expression on Buford's face as he get out of the car establishes his character.
"You can think about it, but don't do it"
Ah I am doing it.
Soon as he was out of sight!
Jackie Gleason should have won an Oscar for this role.
That was gonna be my post exactly! HE made this movie!! CLASSIC! I am 54 in May and I remember when this came out I was 14...1977' ( the same year Elvis passed!)..Life is ....................................................................flying by! 40 fucking years ago! Jackie Gleason, was already a LEGEND when he made this! He and Burt and the rest of the cast! Life man......goes by too fast!
Nicky Depaola. Hey Nicky...you said it too fast.. Same age and Also May. And I saw this the day Elvis died. Never forget it.
Peace.
No kidding, this movie would have totally sucked without him in it.
That being said, it's probably the reason they thought They could make "Smokey & the Bandit part II" without Reynolds
Yeah, I could totally see that. Gleason should have been nominated, to say the least; had he been nominated, it would have been for Best Supporting Actor (considering Reynolds was the lead actor of the film).
"Don't go home, don't go to eat, and don't play with your self."
They should put this part at the end of every movie with bonus scenes, just as a gag.
"It wouldn't look nice on the highway"... LMFAO!!!!!
For real....he made the entire series
😂😂😂😂😂
"You can think about it...but DOOON'T do it." LOL, classic!
I love Junior just standing there and nodding to everything Buford says.
The way he looks at Junior kills me!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
"You look tired boy, REST yourself" LOL
the ass kick kills me ever time
Jesseus The Body that’s an attention getter!
😂😂😂😂
@@bubbasouth69 Despite this being a comedy, I actually think he meant business when he said that.
That's an attention getter
I like the way they didn't hear the sheriff's car pull up but they heard the cigarette lighter closing hahaha
I love when he yelled to Bandit! "Ima Barbecue your Azz to Molasses"😂😂😂😂😂😂
click..."Hold up on that cahh wash gentlemen"..lollol
That knee kick at 0:55 Kills me all the time! And then he acts like he didn't do anything 🤣😆🤣😆🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
One of the funnies movie"s ever. The late great Jackie Gleason, a Classic....
I’m sure another actor COULD have played a great Buford Justice, but I can’t think of who. Gleason owned this role.
Kids these days need an attention getter.
This comment needs more likes. Sad part is I’m only 31 years old.
Thanks Dad for raising me right
😹😸😅🤣😂
You got that right. 🤣
Lol from Fontana ca
And or a “whoops”
The music alone lol
Absolute classic scene
The music makes this scene even better!!!
The disappointment when Junior hands him the cigarette backwards...
LMAO I gotta say that this is my favorite scene from Smokey and the bandit. Jackie Gleason is a legend.
The music as he gets out of the squad car is AWESOME!
"You can think about it... but don't do it." 🤣💀
"You look tired, boy...rest yourself"
Easily one of the best scenes of the movie
One of my favorite part of. All time
My grandpa and I used to watch this movie all the time and this is the one Scene I remember.
best cop ever
I'm sure Mr. Gleason will probably be the most remembered as Ralph Kramden. But this is a strong contender for his 2nd place spot.
One great thing about this first film (that was lost in the 2nd) was that despite his role as the antagonist, we were allowed in the first film a chance to cheer for him now and then. (This scene being one of them obviously.)
No doubt. I look on his character with no animosity, just a guy doing his job--like an insane pitbull that just can't let it go even after crossing several states.
Jackie was once of a game show that lasted only two episodes. The first episode was of the actual game. The 2nd show was Gleason standing in front of camera APOLOGIZING for how bad the concept was and promising never to do anything like that again.
I never saw him as bad. Just........Misguided perhaps.
that's an attention getter
"Hold up on that car wash gentlemen". LOL
I remember seeing this when I was like 8 years old. Just seeing him stepping out of the car I was laughing uncontrollably
"Don't go home, don't go to eat, and don't play with yourself. Wouldn't look nice on my highway. You can think about it, but don't do it." Hahahaha! One of the funniest characters in movie history. Love his menacing theme music, too. Bum...bum bum...bumbumbum!
Rip Jackie Gleason
It wouldn't look nice on my highway lol classic
This guy nailed his role completely. The music buildup is also so perfect. RIP :(
I just can't get enough LMAO
The Greatest movie EVER MADE !
so many great lines nobody chases me boy! im chasing a god dam maniac!
And with his mouth full of that Diablo sandwich when he says "Bank robbers" 👍😆
"Hold up on that car wise gentleman." 🤣 LMAO.
“Car wash”
You don't see this kind of quality comedy in todays dull Hollywood "comedy" movies.
Walks up, knees dude in the nuts, has a nice chat. That's how you establish who's in charge, ladies and gentlemen. RIP, Jackie!
It was actually a whack to the solar plexus, but still as effective.
*THATS A MANN CHARGE!*
Jackie Gleason was so good in this. This movie just wouldn'have been the same without him.t
You know he’s real serious when you here those tubas playing
Handled with true class
Without Buford, there would be no bandit
im 15 and my dad showed me this movie when i was 9 and since then ive been in love
I’ve often played with myself standing in the side of the road.
Seen this movie more times than I can remember and this is the first time I've noticed the sweat ring around Jackie's neck line... I've heard that he was drunk as a skunk through most of the shooting because that's how he could ad lib at his best... I guess all that alcohol and the hot Southern Summer didn't mix too well for ol' Jackie G.
Jarrad Molloy plus being overweight on top of all that.
Not to mention apparently he was a pothead too
Gleason's comic timing and banter was classic I understand he add libbed much of the dialogue, getting out of the caaaar, the cigarette gag, the walk, it was classic of a country Sherriff from the 1950s, you faced worse from your dad...
You look tired bpy, rest yourself!!
The perfect rural southern sheriff.
Hold up on that car wash gentlemen.
Imagine being one of these 3 young actors at the time, knowing you were going to be doing a scene with the iconic Jackie Gleason!
One was in a few of the Police Academy movies and Twister.
'unsnaps the strap on the revolver' Priceless!!
As a kid me and my dad used to the same impression he would hold his hand out for a cigarette and i had it facing the wrong way 🤣🤣🤣🤣 r.i.p Jackie Gleason Mike Henry and to my Dad
The #1 genius move was casting Jackie Gleason for this movie.
It's still such a great movie, even by today's standard. Buford T. Justic is the best!
Never gets old such a classic film I think I saw this when I was like 6 or 7 and never stopped saying put the evidence in the car Buford was always my favorite character.
that horn intro to intro justice in his cenes is so perfect! it's like the jaws theme for the shark. gleason made this movie go. i hope both reynolds and fields were honored to be in his presence even though they never really had any actual scenes with him.
"Hold up on that car wash, gentleman!".. LOLOLOLOL..
"I'm gonna barbecue your ass in molasses."
Here comes the best part of the movie! The Man the Myth the Legend....
One of these days! One of these days! POW! Right in the ding-a-lings! Guess what buddy, today's the day! 0:54 From the Honeymooners to Smokey and the Bandit, Jackie Gleason is a classic!
We had a sheriff like that when I was a boy. It was a very safe county.
Gleason should have gotten an Oscar for this role
GOD !! I could watch Jackie all day !!
We need some more old-school law enforcement. The brats would start to behave themselves.
Or the brats would just outsmart em and out run them
@@redsballer1904 Yeah...no. They'd get their asses kicked around the moon.
Charlie Evans I prefer the classic all rounder term Bootlicker
You know the cops are the villain of the piece, right? The whole point is they get outsmarted and humiliated
I never knew him personally, but boy I sure miss him!
What were dealing with here is a complete lack of respect for the law.
Don’t go home, don’t go to eat and don’t play with yourselves…LMAO🤣
Rest In Peace Handsome
Thanks for heavensent.
Also like that part where Buford goes into the diner for a quick sandwich, then sprays the Bandit with food while talking and walks out the diner with toilet paper stuck to his glasses. Too gawd dam funny.
“Nice lady”
I joked with my daughter saying "you can think about it, but don't do it!" Ya, I left out the line before that.
Come here son ... . Funniest part of the whole movie.
He was great in this movie.
hahaha best movie ever
I saw that more than 40 years ago and I only just figured out that Buford T. Justice is Foghorn Leghorn.
Smokey and the Bandit was released in the United Kingdom on August 28, 1977 and was a sizeable success there, garnering positive reviews
A law man that demands respect
Still funny as shit!
One of my favorite movie villains ever.
don't go home, don't go to eat, and don't play with yourself it wouldn't look nice on my highway, Oh you think about it but don't do it
.....but don't......................do it! Classic!
Rip Bandit and Smokey
Awesome movie
When the officer gets out of the patrol car like that, you know you're done!
My most favorite scene of the movie!
Clint Eastwood's 'Every Which Way But Loose' and the sequel 'Any Which Way You Can' had 'Buford type music' for the biker gang The Black Widows.
The Greatest Lawman in Dixie: Sheriff Buford T. Justice.
Now on 2024 Jackie Gleason would be one busy sheriff. 😳😁
Wise gentleman ha ha
This is golden. You can plainly see these are Sòuthern men.
Excellent! Love hearing that! I was 10 when this movie came out and didn't get to see it until several years later when it came out on HBO, back in the day when we only had about 15 channels and dials on the "big screen" 25-inch tube TVs, heh. Glad you like it kid. The 70s and 80s in movies and TV in general were great to grow up in (let alone the music), so I'm sorry you missed out! But thankfully you can appreciate the good stuff and not the crap we are dealt with today.
In Ireland back in the 80's growing up we had TWO channels!!
One of the greatest movie seance. Of all time. Rip to ev
