CLIP DESCRIPTION:
With Sheriff Justice (Jackie Gleason) hot on their trail, Carrie (Sally Field) accidentally drives through a kids' football game while making an escape.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"Smokey," aka Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason), is the prospective father-in-law of unwilling bride Carrie (Sally Field). The Bandit (Burt Reynolds), a maverick racecar driver, makes an 80,000-dollar bet that he can transport a shipment of Coors beer from Texarkana, TX, to Atlanta within 28 hours. It's important to note that in 1977, it was illegal to sell the Coors brand east of the Mississippi River without a permit; if we don't note that, then the plot won't make sense at times. Already in danger of arrest from redneck lawmen like Buford T. Justice, Bandit furthers his chances at a stiff jail term when he offers a ride to Carrie, who hopes to escape her unwanted wedding to Justice's boy. The rest of the film is one long chase; not quite as subtle as a Road Runner/Coyote cartoon, not quite as restrained as a Three Stooges comedy. Universally panned by critics upon its first release, Smokey and the Bandit reportedly pulled in just under $126 million and led to two sequels.

Reynolds was given the 1977 vehicle used during promotion of the film as a gift, though the car itself never actually appeared in the film. Because of the popularity of the movie and the sales success of the Trans Am, then President of Pontiac Alex Mair promised to supply Reynolds with a Trans Am each year. Owing to his financial difficulties, in 2014 Reynolds put his vast collection of artwork and memorabilia up for auction, including the Trans Am. High estimates for the car were up to $80,000, but that was dwarfed by the actual sale price of $450,000. Also up for auction was a go-kart replica of the car, which sold for nearly $14,000
Never knew that

Jackie Gleason was a genius!
According to Hal Needham on a radio show in Atlanta, the scene with the football players narrowly missed being a serious accident when, unknown to the film crew, a groundskeeper watered the grass on the field, causing the car to go out of control, slide the wrong way, and almost hit the extras.
That and the extras were actual children and not just shorter stunt people.
Hal Needham said that it was a good thing their Daddies were all at work when they did that scene.
There's a video of Burt talking about it. He was actually in the car in the passenger seat.
@@sstroh08 so when he was saying about watch out and don't hit the kids, that was actually Burt saying that, not necessarily what was in the script, you can tell the shock in his voice was genuine.

The part that wasn't supposed to happen was breaking through the backstop. He was supposed to go around the fence but got confused after the jump when there were people standing where he was supposed to go, so at the last second he went for the safer opening of the backstop.

ChasetheKraut Yeah and the funny part is it's back on the Trans Am for the rest of the movie.
It falls off twice.
I guess he had a spare (or two).
I don't think they meant for it to fall off. Remember that they went through quite a few cars making this movie.

With an original budget of $5.3 million (cut to $4.3 million two days before initial production), the film eventually grossed $126,737,428 in North America, making it the second-highest-grossing movie of 1977. The worldwide gross is estimated at over $300 million.
Those people at 2:23 have best dumbfounded reactions I’ve ever seen.
Because it’s real reactions to the outta script stunt.
The stunt double driver for Sally Field was really emotionally destroyed when she thought that she ran over some of the children during the jump.

That scene was not supposed to happen the way it did. Too fast hitting the ramp and almost hitting the kids , but hey. It was the 70's and kids were alot tougher than they are now. Parents were more layed back as well.
I just watched the interview apparently the parents all said whatever it turned out all right. The kids wanted to do it again then burt took them all to dinner lol
About the scene when the Mississippi troopers were chasing Bandit, even across the lake... just imagine if Ronald Lee Ermey (the guy who played Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket and Sarge in Toy Story) played Sarge...
Oh I'm sure him and Jackie Gleason are cussing each other out in whatever way possible somewhere up there XD

RIP . Burt seemed to be a fine man. About 3 years ago ,I saw him ,at a Best Buy store in Jupiter Florida. He was looking for a new TV . He was so nice and polite to everyone. I felt so bad for him. He was obviously in a lot of pain ,and it showed. May God rest his soul. We lost a great man , and a wonderful actor.
2:02 the rear view mirror disappears
They go through the wall turning left then right with a different camera angle
Bandit cares about the kids.
2:31 look at the tracks they had to redo that sene 4 times lmao
No they drove the car to the mark, point where they are to do the scene and be perfectly focused and in frame, then they put a rock in front of the passenger front tire so he knew where to stop. tracks are from backing up to reset the scene
Burt you were the man.
That was too real
The crazy thing with this bit is that it was a mistake. The stunt driver missed the corner and floored it. That car was not supposed to leave the ground at all. Filming stopped for the day and Burt spent the day with the kids and families. Made a great movie moment though.
"i got the metal to the pedal and the thing to the floor!"
The very best scene in the very best movie of my childhood.
2:05 It's the dubbed screams that make it even funnier.
That is quite a remarkable scene. After watching it several times I've noticed some interesting things. When they cut to the front angle of the football players running with the Trans Am behind them it really is still the same car finishing the landing from the jump and then driving on past the camera. Most of the time in car jumps they will bring the car to a stop soon after the landing since in editing it will be cut anyway. But in this case they really did use a side camera, the front camera and also the in-car POV camera to play on out the scene a bit longer. Upon landing the wipers come on as evident in the side view, then front view and in-car. The car passes the players then turns right, heading to the wall. From the vantage point of the in-car camera there was no place for the car to go unless they either (1)planned to slam on the brakes and bring the car to a stop or (2)crash into the wall.
It appears they planned to crash into the wall and the pretend squabble / fighting over the steering wheel was part of the plan. The people sitting on top of the wall do not go into panic at all, even though the car is heading straight below them, which could allegedly bring them collapsing down. The cheerleaders to the left hardly notice the car and there is no way the production would launch a car onto the field without everyone present being prepped and part of the scene. They certainly wouldn't come ramping onto a field by surprise. Remember the front camera crew was somewhere on the field, zoomed in yes, but since the camera pans for the car passing it had to be relatively near the midst of the players on the field. What raises question is the little blonde cheerleader to the right seems genuinely surprised as she turns around and dangerously close to getting hit and the person hanging on the fence of the wall and the person draping the blue thing (coat?) over them seem to be in danger, especially the one in blue who doesn't seem to have gotten out of the way.
If the car was supposed to come to a stop but instead kept going for some reason it seems there should be much more commotion/panic then is present.
It appears that the car coming out of the wall is not part of a continuous take of ramping and crashing as the wipers don't seem to be going and the passenger's (Burt's stunt man) right hand is at the far right in the car, close to where the grab handle and glove box is located in a '76/77 Trans Am. If it is a continuous take then they certainly planned to go through the wall else there wouldn't have been a camera crew there to capture it. The rear of the wall looks quite different from the front so I suspect that the exit crash was un-related to the entry crash. For some reason they have 2 takes of the car coming out of the wall (one turning left with no CB antenna and the other take turning right with the CB antenna intact that later gets knocked off as they merge onto the street.
The only way to know for sure about this whole scene is to get hold of the screenplay and production notes which would say the passengers fought over the wheel and the car crashes through the wall, narrowly missing the people. Or to see the rest of the footage that didn't make it to the movie. But since none of that seems to exist anymore it seems at least of few of the eye witnesses present would chime in with what they saw. There are several dozen people watching the car in this scene. Many are looking away but many are watching what is happening. A person who was 10 or 25 years old back then would be 52 and 67 today.
You're answers are within Burt Reynolds video of this scene. This wasn't supposed to happen the way it did.
I was there...the jump car had a large shock installed between the seats to allow the frame to flex as it hit the ground...what really happened, the steering column broke upon impact and the car swerved to the right and headed for the dug out. the car did run into the dug out but only hit the front wall and fence. it did not go through. This was shot at Redan Park and the funeral procession scene was also shot in front of Redan Elementary school

This was shot at a real football game?!?!?! Gotta love old movies they just don't make em like they used to
That was filmed right across the street from my house in Lithonia (suburb of Atlanta) on Phillips Rd. I bought the house in 2009 and I used to sit on the front porch and watch the youth football games because they still have the kiddie ball games there. It’s called Redan Park. Lol. U seen that clip too. Came over here after I watched it cause i couldnt remember the car jumping over them like he said.
I'm thinking that they didn't use the take that Burt referred to probably because of how it looked and if you look at the grass it already has car track's on it therefore indicating that this scene was filmed multiple times. Or like you said, it could all be an exaggeration!!
No way in hell this scene could be filmed today..lol (Or this movie). That cheerleader almost got ran over @2:18!
Why not?, and Burt Reynolds explained in an interview that a grounds keeper watered the grass without them knowing causing the car to spin out of control, so the kids almost getting hit wasn't scripted and they were actually running for real

If they weren't supposed to go through it, then why were there cameras set up where the jump was and where they go through the wall? (Added drama)
Through the dugout that part is seen from the in car camera. You can see the girl in red nearly get clipped and the person in blue was moving away so slowly I doubt they weren't hit.
