CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Bandit (Burt Reynolds) comes across a police roadblock, he runs from the Sheriff (Jackie Gleason) and escapes by jumping a dismantled bridge.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"Smokey," aka Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason), is the prospective father-in-law of unwilling bride Carrie (Sally Field). The Bandit (Burt Reynolds), a maverick racecar driver, makes an 80,000-dollar bet that he can transport a shipment of Coors beer from Texarkana, TX, to Atlanta within 28 hours. It's important to note that in 1977, it was illegal to sell the Coors brand east of the Mississippi River without a permit; if we don't note that, then the plot won't make sense at times. Already in danger of arrest from redneck lawmen like Buford T. Justice, Bandit furthers his chances at a stiff jail term when he offers a ride to Carrie, who hopes to escape her unwanted wedding to Justice's boy. The rest of the film is one long chase; not quite as subtle as a Road Runner/Coyote cartoon, not quite as restrained as a Three Stooges comedy. Universally panned by critics upon its first release, Smokey and the Bandit reportedly pulled in just under $126 million and led to two sequels.

Those old bridge pilings and parts of the old bridge are still there to this day. If you're ever passing through GA by way of 75, stop off in Jonesboro, Flint River road, just a few miles off the highway.
We did a few years ago.
I used to pass it as a kid every time we went to and from my grandparents' house. They lived about a mile from it in a subdivision. Every time we'd drive by, I'd imagine Bandit doing the jump again.
The bridge is made to look like it's in the boonies, but it's actually surrounded by a pretty major town in all directions. That's good ol' editing for ya.
@@Quazi-moto One reason why it was a little more difficult for me to find.
@@jordansanders4854 I can see how that would be. Especially some years later, after the bridge was all but rotted away.
The look on Bandit's face after the jump, almost like he was shocked it worked. 😂😂😂
0:23 "You sumbitches couldn't close an umbrella!"
LMFAO 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Smokey and the Bandit was more than a movie, it was a 2 hour commercial for the Pontiac Trans Am.
It's one sexy ass car for a Pontiac right?
sevan grigoryan Of course! As soon as I win the lottery, the '77 Trans Am is the first classic car I'm getting my hands on.
Pontiac's 77 Lemans too!
MichaelD8393 Yes it was and it was great marketing
2 best tv/movies cars ever: The Bandit's Trans Am and Jim Rockford's sleeper Pontiac Firebird. lol
2:06 "See I didnt wreck it Sheriff"
"Push" LOL
Apparently Buford wrecked it for you LMFAO
"Well jump me"
Feel heartbroken for Sally today cause Burt always said she was the love of his life. Rest In Peace Burt
She didn't want to marry him though.
Dont, he kicked her to the curb, she never looked back, he regretted it lol.
No CGI, no seatbelts, mild-racism. Pure 70’s!
...and 39 years later, the "Mulberry Bridge" still hasn't been repaired!!! That's REAL Southern progress for ya!
Smokey and the Bandit's STILL one great flick after all of these years!!!
That's nothing. President Eisenhower began construction on the Interstate Highway system in 1955 and, it's still not finished in Atlanta!
Is the cars still in the river
Bill Clinton's state...
Just build a ramp at both ends and grow a pair and problem solved
Cause they built a new bridge next to it.
We were driving through GA a few years ago, decided to exit hwy 75, just a few miles to the west. Those old pilings are still there in the Flint River.
Rest In Peace Burt Reynolds. You will always be the legendary Bandit.
R.I.P Burt Reynolds. He will truly be missed!
"WE JUMPED OVER THAT BRIDGE WE DID IT DID YOU SEE WHAT WE DID!""Yes, I did.""I WANNA JUMP SOMETHING ELSE I WANNA JUMP A HOUSE I WANNA JUMP SOMETHING!""Well, jump me."he is a pure legend XD
Yep
😂
😆👍👍
😂
My favorite line! 😂
0:20 "Did ya see that? They went right through our road block". "You sumbitches couldn't close an *umbrella*!" Jackie Gleason was funnier here than in The Honeymooners.
One of my many favorite lines in this movie 🤣🤣.
@@phesm4353 One of mine too, right up there with: "YOU WANT SUMTHIN?"Jr. "Some hushpuppies, daddy!" *"WE GOT NO TIME FOR THAT CRAP! Ugh, Sumbitch!"* And: "My hat flew off, daddy." *"I hope your **_God Damn_** head was in it!"* _Smokey & the Bandit_ has better lines from Jackie than _The Honeymooners_ to me.
Nothing is funnier than The Honeymooners.
Almost all of Jackie Gleason's lines were ad libbed.
@@jtkirkfan2002 Which makes them even better because no scriptwriter could come up with: "You sumbitches couldn't close an umbrella," or: "I hope your goddam head was in it."
2:54 this needs to be the meme of 2020
𝒀𝒆𝒔. 😢
Still relevant in 2022
@@thelastvalkyrie1998 still Relevant in 2023. With potentially WW3 about to happen.
0:20 - 0:25
Cop: *Did you see that they went right through our road block!*
Buford T Justice: *You sum' bitches couldn't close a umbrella!*
Smokey and the Bandit & The Dukes of Hazzard were my fave Good ole Boys shows back when I was a kid in the '70s.
Hey Boi, where's Sheriff Branford?!
I AM Sheriff Branford.
For some reason or 'nother, you sounded a little taller on radio.
Even with the blatant racism in this movie Jackie and Burt made it worth watching. RIP both of you.Sally was good too.I will never forget her in Forrest Bump.
It was originally. You sounded whiter on radio...
@@1953fords no it was always "you sounded taller"
@@angelajohnson6659 blatant? Look at Bandit's reaction when the guy at the truckstop gets excited to fuel his car. Look at Snowman's relationship with Sugarbear. This is the only scene that showed any racism.
officer: if j.w. don't get out of my way im gonna pass him
sheriff brandford: where in the woods?
LMFAO
Lmao* LMFAO is a band
CHP Mike Mr Specific strikes
+Doug Murray what? I just let you know
I love Sheriff Branford
"The fact that you are a sheriff is not germain to the situation."
According to the subtitles, he’s gonna pants him
i dont give a damn what anybody says about this movie. No wonder after 36 years later, this is STILL a classic flick for the ages!!
RIP Bandit.....Looks like Buford T. Justice is waiting for you
Dukes of Hazzard, the Smokey movies, Cannonball Run...it seems there was ALWAYS a bridge out so that the cool car could make the jump. 😆
Bond did it in 75..
That front cop car changed to a different model mid-chase.
Dethmeister I realized that when I watched it at an older age lol
In the chase which starts with a cop 'taking a leak' and then jumping into his car to chase the bandit the cop's car starts out as a Dodge but then turns into a Pontiac before entering the lake!
It’s a 1971 Dodge Satellite 4door looks a little bit like the roadrunner
Same with the first episode of Dukes of Hazzard.
Nope, starts out as a ‘77 Pontiac Lemans, turns into a Plymouth Fury and then ends up in the lake as the Lemans again…
2:09 gets me everytime. HAHA!
Rest in peace bandit
R.I.P BURT REYNOLDS, GODSPEED BANDIT
The trans am that made the jump was totaled after that
that year trans am wasnt powerful enough to make that jump i heard they had to bring in the general to do the job and just painted the back of it the color of the trans am ROFL !!
JAY OH I thought official word on that was they just souped up the bird and got it to fly. Kept using parts from it so that they had a car that was running by the end of the film
Griffin Crafts I think you're right.
I watched a show on that jump and all the preparation. The stunt driver broke his back in the landing.
@@leejee88 Yeah, those powerful (lol) 318 General Lee engines were packing a 150 hp punch. Built Bandit TA 400 packing about 350 hp.
Great movie and great jumping scenes Rest In Peace bandit
Jackie Gleason was awesome. He improvised all of his lines.
Officer: "Did you see that they went right through a roadblock!"
Buford: "You sumbitches couldn't close an umbrella!"
Me: "You have the right to remain BURNED!"
There is a certain man who also could not close an umbrella, yet the country thought he was good enough to run a country!
@@jean-lucpicard5510 I totally hear ya...but I wouldn't say "the country." He only got in because the Democrats rigged the election.
RIP Burt Reynolds!!
"that's bad *swirve* that's worse"
RIP BANDIT !
Anyone notice that the one Dodge Monaco was missing when the second one went off the bridge? lol
I went swimming down there when I was a kid 1982!
Found the cop car?
That jump would fuck up your transmission, your suspension, everything.
Thanks for the great clip! RIP BANDIT!
R.I.P Smokey
Loved it when he said what the hell is this world coming to, Loved Smokey and the Bandit.
Best film of 1977
*cough*starwars*cough*
R.I.P. Burt Reynolds
love this scene. not just the bridge jump but also the two 180 reversals Burt did on the one lane dirt road. I would love to do that
This movie inspired me to train maneuvers on backroads. Saved my life once in an emergency.
I love it when muscle cars do big jumps! 😃😃😃
Favorite movie of all time
"GUYS, GUYS! Quick! Cue the banjos, and not in the creepy Deliverance way!"
😂😂😂
Ahhh the ole classic, skid marks sound on dirt bit
The Trans Am was wrecked by the jump, lol.
"See? I didn't wreck it, Sheriff!"
*boink*
Very nice video and fun to watch. Burt Reynolds,Sally Fields, and Jackie Gleason at their best. Have a nice day.
"Rest, buddy."
Love the Banjo Music
I see kudzu making a cameo appearance here.
The shot of Buford’s Pontiac hitting Branford’s car is one of the funniest scenes in the movie
Eu vi esse filme várias vezes na época muito bom , boa recordação parabéns
Trans AM: (Jumps over the bridge)
General Lee: Finally a worthy opponent, our battle will be legendary!
Rest in peace good buddy!
Doesn’t the music in the start sound a little like wacky races
The good ol days!😊
Sadly we’ve lost some of the cast from Smokey and the bandit as of today
I love this movie
". . . you sounded a little 'taller' on the radio." lol
And that ladies and gentlemen, is how you cross a dismantled bridge.

Hey boy where's Sheriff Branford...I am Sheriiff Branford...for some reason or another you sounded a little taller on radio..what the hell is the world comin to...hahaha
In the original movie Buford says to Sheriff Bradford,, “ for some reason you sounded a little WHITER on the radio”! “What in the hell is this world coming to”!
RIP
Well they didn’t start chasing us until you played that getaway music!
1:47 The Dukes of Hazzard reference.
Remember when we could make fun of ourselves?
"Jump me!"
That was so funny how he worked that in😄...
does anyone know what the name of the music playing during this scene? i cant find it with the rest of the movie music
He just pulled a Dukes of Hazzard.
Smokey And The Bandit came out about 2 years before The Dukes of Hazzard.
“Oh I forgot to tell ya I’m runnin block for 400 cases of illegal brew” lmaooooo

This movie is what started my obsession with cars.

Anyone know where i can find the song
Plymouth fury 440 to scoop?
Better jump than the one in Hooper!

What do you like then? Songs of praise with a cup of ovaltine and a tartan blanket?
Between this and the dukes of hazzard, when i was 4, i was insistant i was leaving england to live in the free south. C'mon. You guys, you made a new T/A! Knight rider rolls in a MUSTANG now. You can say Bandit and Frog had a kid and voila! Links up with one of snowmans kids. 3rd movie!!!
What did Buford mean by sheriff Bradford sounding a little taller on radio
Him being black
I think he didn't expect a black sheriff. That's why he asked. To cover up for his mistake, he just claimed that the guy on the CB sounded taller.
Plus, Branford was literally several feet beneath him at the time.
@@OttoMattak I never thought of that - it was a very witty and light-hearted way of covering up his mistake. I often wondered how the other actors on the scene managed to keep straight faces with Jackie Gleason ad-libbing the funniest of his lines the way he did?
@@josephmullin5845 That's a damn good question lol. I'd have had a hard time. It never phased me as a kid, but it's funny how they cast a guy with a New York accent as a Texas County mountie but with his comedic wit, I'm grateful they did.
@@OttoMattak well regarding the new york accent, he does do an attempt at what I believe to be a texas accent in the third movie where he says "Get in the car, Junior. Ah don't need any tires to catch that box of manure". But I'm sure not all Texas County Mounties originated from Texas even in real life. What I noticed as well, in the second and third movies, Buford is much more subdued and calmer than in the first: in some scenes in the first he gets so angry that his complexion turns bright red, which may well suggest his blood pressure was spiking at dangerously high levels and so Gleason was advised by his doctor from thereon to take things easy, hence him having fewer to no angry outbursts in the second and third movies.
This is the original sound design, not after it was re-engineered for the DVD. Neat.
Other way round. The movie was gonna have a bigger budget originally but a Universal Axeman reduced it by a million dollars so as part of the cost cutting measures was filmed in mono, pretty much every sound was redubbed in stereo/5.1 for Blu-Ray/digital download.
You actually need to search for a DVD cut with mono sound to hear the Trans-Am roar not be a neutered kitten.
This wasn't only a movie.
It a 2 hour comedy commercial for Pontiac Trans-Am
0:05 what Arkansas county sheriff is that because I know the cars are Plymouth’s but I don’t know what sheriffs department that is could someone help me
RIP Hal Needham
I remember watching this movie as a child and there was a power outage after they jumped over the bridge.
