Who’d have thought a few years ago that we’d see practical SUVs in the Aston Martin, Ferrari and Lotus lineups, or witness an all-electric Porsche receiving such a warm reception from driving enthusiasts?
Well, it’s all about diversification and keeping the cash coming in, and it’s not just high-end luxury and performance brands that are having to adapt. More mainstream manufacturers such as Toyota are also expanding their product portfolios, with the Japanese automaker beginning to introduce its range of new bZ-badged all-electric vehicles and eking out extra value from its existing model lines.
The Yaris Cross compact SUV is an example of the latter approach; based on the same TNGA platform as the regular Yaris, it sits alongside the standard supermini and the performance GR model on the Toyota price list. As Nicola Hume finds out, the compact SUV is one of the most fuel efficient around, and could be a great stop-gap for those waiting to go all-electric.

I had one as a loan car and was staggered how good it was.
A great balanced review Nicola, and for the target market it really works but if that includes the installation of smaller versions of us those rear doors might prove to be an issue but on the plus side you are less likely to ding the car parked a little close to you. As a runabout with the odd longer journey it would be fine though if your not in a hurry and let's face it crowded roads along with some very careful drivers out on the lanes you may not have many opportunities to be in a hurry. I like it.
Great review again nicola, plain, simple, informative. Just saying from North of Newcastle 👍 😉
Great video. I'm going to switch my Yaris for a Cross in the summer... I just can't wait 😎
The best comes right at the end of Nicola's fine review at 7:42 🤫
"Maybe have a cheeky little look at the Yaris cross" But... then immediately a mouse click on the right side. Take a good look at the Honda Jazz review and more importantly: take a good look at both cars in real life. After an extensive test drive in the Yaris and the Honda Jazz, we ended up (very convinced) in the... Jazz.
After a year and a half still very happy with that choice: The Honda Jazz is BRILLIANT! 👍Average consumption⛽over nearly 17 months (tracked on Spritmonitor): 61.9 mpg.
Wonder when this video was shot, Nicola is dressed like its 40d outside, i wish it still was 😅😂
Another fantastic video
I enjoyed watching the Video Review. One of the best Small SUVs on sale 🙂
A very good car if one requires decent boot space, higher SUV ride. I went for the normal Yaris top excel which is about £5k less than this top spec cross.
The weather was Just right for wearing Shorts 😊
Nicola, please do a Christmas special with the best Cars in each category. That Will be so much fun
In other markets, there is a conventional ICE-only version of the Yaris Cross with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol only, but that is not offered in the UK - most likely because there wouldn’t be enough demand for it in the UK and so wouldn’t sell as well as the hybrid. This was likely also the reason why Toyota discontinued the ICE-only 1.2-litre turbo version of the Corolla in the UK for 2020, leaving just the hybrid versions, and why the ICE-only 1.5 petrol version of the normal Yaris hatchback isn't sold in the UK.
It’s also probably because we like to just get a higher spec one on a monthly finance plan in the UK, in lesser developed countries like Greece a cheaper option is very much needed.
You can still get them with ice only engines in Ireland (Republic) wish they did ice only in the UK. Think I might opt for the Aygo X as it's the only ice car Toyota do now in the uk
You're dead right when you say ev's are so expensive when you look at the money manufacturer are asking & what you can buy for the same money in an internal combustion engine then there no comparison...this is the sort of car that is worth better value for money even if it's not my kind a car...great review & keep up the great channel 👍
Mind you, who knows what petrol will cost in 10 years' time....
@@Mububban23 that just means I have 10 years to think about getting a new car. Will we even have cars in 10 years. Mine will be 21 years old by then if its still going. And to be honest if anything happens to it I'm not bothering getting another one. I would get rid of it now but it's a really nice car.
Do we know how much of a hit the AWD MPG takes compared to the FWD model?
would've loved it if we had this in Canada
I have a quick question I bought a Toyota Yaris Cross GR sport hybrid in Poland I try to park automatically but instead of the parking button to press in my car it's a button hold, is that mean I don't have automatic parking? Please answer me
My old 320 turbo diesel BMW did 58 mpg all day, every day.
Unbelievable 👏🏻👏🏻
Does anyone in Australia have car parts for my Auto altise/limited edition 2006. The internal colour is carbon grey. And the rear stop centre light I need.
Amazing thing is it retains excellent mpg. My yaris is 21 years old now. Have owned for 9 years.... Its my second. Mpg is excellent.
You seemed a bit disappointed when you said "9 inches"
It's not the size, it's what you do with it that matters.
We ever going to see a GR Yaris Cross? That’d be kinda funky and awesome.
kinda like a GLA45. i like it
It’s already available 😊
I love my 2019 Yaris but night driving is difficult as the headlights are sh........ Getting them checked out next week. I get between 75 and 80 mpg.
The new Prius is creating quite a stir now too
New Prius looks great but for a lot of people it is just not practical being now even lower to the ground with even more reduced ground clearance. Ok for city driving i guess.
@@talkandplay it's literally a city runabout. Just faster, more fuel efficient and aerodynamic and doesn't like like feces. It's on my shortlist.
Love Nicola! ❤️
Please come to USA!!
Not sure why so many reviews complain about the rev sound....i think it's pretty cool.
Very entertaining review, but at 2.30 ish, you fell into the (I don't understand cvt) trap of suggesting engine is straining or struggling.. Its not its moving to the efficient zone of the engine.
Its not made to fast. Its like putting on a pair of gloves and saying "my hands are getting too warm".
I have had a yaris cross for the last 7 months, just to share my experience, it is a good car, the only drawback might be the HP of the engine, it has 116hp, it may not be enough for a quick move or racing, specially in uphill. But it is a great economical car!
Hi, Is it self charging!!
@@angellino1966 Yes, it is!
I drive a 2016 Audi allroad quatro 3.0 V6 diesel which takes 5 minutes to fully "charge" for £100, does 55 mpg and 800 miles on one "charge."
ULES (Ultra Low Emission Scam) compliant. It has a far smaller carbon footprint than any EV, cost quarter of what a TESLA does, has far superior build quality and doesn’t sound like a milk float or look like a duck. It can also be "charged" at over 8'300 stations throughout the UK which are all completely compatible with the car, safe in the knowledge that no children were used as slave labour in African mines mining rare Earth metals to build my car!
Any EV owner want a race from London to Edinburgh and back?
Hello, agree with you. But this is not an EV nor an PHEV . Just to mention that IT ia verry efficient in town
Lies 😂 55mpg ? 🤔 no chance!
Think I’d get a Dacia Sandero with lpg as can get 40 mpg but it’s 1/2 the cost so getting same economy for 1/2 the price
I want Nicola to review the new Civic.
Nimbly....I live there gorgeous little place!!
I took one of these out for an all day test drive last week whilst my petrol DS3 crossback was being serviced. I had high hopes for it as a potential replacement in a year or two. Whilst the tech, performance and economy (55.8 mpg over 110 miles of mixed urban, rural and motorway roads) was impressive, the wind and road noise, and indeed the ride, was much less so. I had high hopes for the Yaris Cross but after dropping it off and picking up my DS following it's service, sadly the Yaris will no longer be on a future shortlist as the DS, for a similar price, is streets ahead in the luxury car feel and build quality.
sorry which model is DS you mean?
@Charles Thomas Was that the AWD Yaris Cross (55.8 mpg)?
@@MG3-Hybrid No, it was an Excel 2wd
maybe the hybrid Juke is better .. having a normal auto gearbox
Yaris Cross is a beautiful design … journalists you’re wrong
how can the puma compete with zero petrol use in towns …. yaris is a no brainer choice
Nothing wrong with CVT transmission. We had a Civic Hybrid, and now have a Yaris Hybrid and a Lexus hybrid, all with CVT.
We've been more than happy with them. For some reason, car reviewers don't like them. Strange !
I prefer a proper handbrake rather than the catch you pull up, as it's either on or off. Try pulling it when you are driving and
wheels will lock up.
I achieve often 70mpg with the Yaris Design when driven properly.
Yaris Cross design? 70mpg is impressive.
Fantastic car
And electricity 60-90 cnt kWh, if isn`t banned for cars like in Swiss.😬 In gas is 9 kWh/L. In winter heating is free from internal combustion engines. For blackouts, you can`t storage elecricity. Hybrid is better choice than full electric.
£24k for a jacked up super mini is for sure expensive! You can get a fully electric MG4 for around the same!
Good luck when the electric does off?
Japanese reliability. Renowned
😂😂😂😂
Nicola just well explained almost all things why i wonder how on earth can Yaris be so popular car, and this Cross too when it becomes one. Never understood. Quality isnt really there, looks are not that good, its not really all that good to drive or comfortable. Todays toyota reminds me what happened to Mercedes in late -90s when they just started to make money with brand.
Is Corolla cross coming to UK anytime soon?
Dealer told me the Corolla Cross is not coming to UK.
No. It's available in the USA and Asian countries. Pakistan is getting them but not the UK sorry. You'll have to make do with the Yaris Cross I'm afraid.
@@charlesedwards4160I read that it would compete with the RAV4, and that the market in the UK is big enough for both Toyota cars.
Nicola your so busy 💖
The muffin top dash layout is weird!
Babe, I really enjoy your videos. You kind of remind me Mat Watson in his early career. The screen on latest Toyota cars are oriented in opposite direction to prevent sun glare. In Europe the screen again points towards the passenger. Thanks for reviewing this car the funny way 😊
My mums 2018 holden astra 1.4 turbo (140?hp) saloon does 70mpg (us gallon so more if imp) highway (3.4l/100km). And about 5l/100 around town.
It is very quiet, very comfortable (supple. A quality so many cars have never known).
So big woop to your 1.5n/a+ev doing 70mper imp.g.
Its frankly unimpressive.
I did sydney to melbourne on one tank easily.
The drivers seat is a bit oddly positioned and the interior rear view mirror is spectacularly useless.
Otherwise beaut car.
Looking to replace it but cant find anything even remotely as good.
Two hands on the wheel. Its actually an offence!
HEVs are definitely an excellent alternative to EVs. Charge Anxiety with EVs is real. So, wait until the grid and supporting infrastructure are ready? No need to, HEVs reduce CO2 by 50%. Nothing to scorn at. PHEVs are better, 100% reduction in CO2 emissions for the average daily commute, plus no charge anxiety for the occasional longer trip.
Hybrid electric power is FREE, and doesn’t take your time to find a charge point…vastly superior to plug ins
The electricity is not free. You're paying for gasoline, which converts it into electricity through regeneration.
Toyota feels that the push to green energy is too fast for reality. That is why they are not pushing out EVs.
They are playing it smart, while the other big "Green" manufacturers are driving themselves to bankruptcy
I was already planning to get a corolla cross. Until I found this. 60-70 mpg is a winner for me
Corolla cross and new 2023 Prius not coming to UK sadly.
is this an older review just uploaded now? because of the clothes
Looks like a RAV4 on a boil wash.
Don't talk about mommy like that. She looked perfectly fine last night :)
Mine gets 68 mpg in summer but only 57 mpg in winter. I find the suspension a bit firm
The hard ride puts me off...i drive mostly on small country roads so my back would suffer a lot..shame ..hopefully the corolla cross will have a softer ride if it makes it to UK that is which at moment is unlikely
A softer suspension would increase body roll for a tall suv.
All cars get less mpg in the winter as cold air is more dense the car is literally pushing thicker air out of the way
In winter the engine runs cooler being less efficient
Bit cold for shorts
Great for running round country lanes, but DON'T take it anywhere near a dual carriage or motorway. MPG Drops like a stone and the noise!!!!
Yeah there's no way a hybrid will "easily" get 60mpg other than trundling round town.
@@robertrichards2493 Noise aside, I just did a rouind trip of 451miles m-way and single lane roads. 63mpg from actual miles and actual refill. But certainly not the 72 advert A 10mpg drop. But it took patience and concentration.
BYD E2
Unfortunately, with a % warranty.
I have a Toyota that's backed by a full warranty.
I like her
70mpg round town and only 60 on a roads and motorways? Yeah makes sense love.
The hybrid drivetrain performance is indeed inverted vis-a-vis ice-only.
Hybrids seem to work best when you drive under 30 mph it seems.
@@xbrlinfinity9399Correct. Highways 70mph works the ICE hard, lower speeds and around town uses less ICE, more of the electric motor/battery, and regenerative braking to charge the battery.
Toyota is answer right now .
Yaris ,, Aygo .etc with sensible price and size and great mpg .. KEI CARS are the future .
Who needs an over size , over price SUV .
unless your egos calls.
Why would you even buy this suv over a normal family hatchback? I’d rather have a lower centre of gravity, better road handling, more economical, more practical family hatchback without the stigma of an suv!
@CommodoreSinclair because companies like Ford are abandoning the family hatchback
This lady is an Alpha and would dominate as a comedian
I swapped my Yaris Hybrid for a Yaris Cross about a month ago and I hate it. It is nowhere near as economical as the Yaris hybrid. I slightly bigger enginge hauling a much bigger car around.... do the maths. The Hybrid system does not kick in anywhere near as often as it did on the smaller hybrid.
There must have been a technical issue with your particular Yaris Cross as the one I have since June 2022 is perfect.
Get the new honda civic 50mpg and i don’t hang about. Sports mode all day
We dont need any more suvs
Good little Trim with BORING Trim!!
Ta laska robi takie memiczne miny, że aż mi się nie chce jej oglądać
Yes Toyota quote 4.4 litres per 100km however in reality its closer to 6.1 litres per 100km in real everyday driving.
Hello, have this car and it's not how you say. In the summer I had a meddium 4.1-4.3 and now in winter it takes 5-5.3 on short trips. So it's a verry efficient car
@@mariuscostelmiron6082 Perhaps hen van lives rural on hilly country roads..will take a toll
Am just here for the Christmas Crypto bot scam and that What's App number to be super rich 😂🤣
Nope. EVs are quieter and smoother. They have a lower cost of ownership. They have regenerative braking. You can charge them at home, overnight. They don't leak fluids on the road. They can be powered with renewable energy.
personally i think its too slow
Why can't we get a light weight stripped out car without these 1,000 different tech things.
It could be manual, with a small engine and be sporty and get 70mpg. I'd buy that.
The problem is that will just be you and the other comment warriors.
You can get an MX5 still... Or import a Japanese s660.
The market is just too small to bother.
@@TsLeng A la Honda Civic HX which sold well I believe.
@@WyFoster that's 20 years ago? Unfortunately the car market is very different now. Partly consumer preference, partly safety and emission regulations, then economics of selling a basic car.
Most buyers like gadgets and luxury
Safety increases weight
Emissions regs is favorable to automatics/hybrids (auto)
Basic small cars have razor thin margins
@TsLeng No one makes a sexy, fun, small car. MX5's are fun but let's be honest, really lame in terms of curb appeal.
We need something fresh.
@@WyFoster you could always buy a lotus Elise. Or S2000. But if you think the MX-5 lacks kerb appeal..... you are possibly the type that would actually go and buy an Audi S3.
Toyota have been doing this for over 25 years 🤔
😉 𝚙𝚛𝚘𝚖𝚘𝚜𝚖
EV are toast
Too small, too slow and not enough interior space...
Not ready to go electric... Most people never want to go electric and we all know that there are massive flaws on this EV idea...
Watch Supercar videos. More interested to buy a Yaris Cross....
cvt sucks big time
School for over acting
Funny thing is hybrids are worse for the environment that conventional diesel or petrol cars, mainly because in hybrid the combustion rarely attains its optimum operating temp so pumps out loads of pollution!
You got it so wrong, I have to correct you here. All new petrol engines hybrid or not, are designed to be warmed up super quickly. For 2 reasons, efficiency and emissions (for the cat to work).
A hybrid like this (Toyota) has Atkinson cycle to eek out efficiency even more.
And trust me, the engines come on first thing when it's cold on first start to prime the system.
@@TsLeng I think you are wrong!
@@antonoat I just explained in summary why you are wrong but hey, you go ahead and think what you want.
Always funny when non technical minded people with a weeeee bit of knowledge (and I really mean a wee bit) try to apply it and get it all wrong.
A classic is using belts and pulleys to describe Toyota's hybrid system. If you do that, you are wrong too. Rings a bell? CVT....? Answer: there are no cvt belts in a toyota hybrid.
Okay Einy thank you. Time for you to get back into the delorean and show us how it's done
that's goin to be one of the ugliest Toyota i've ever seen in a modern era... in my opinion of course.
"...answer to EVs...." Hahahahahah - comparing this with, say, an MG 4 EV - there's simply no comparison at all! The reviewer is trying so hard to make this car sound positive, but it clearly comes across as old fashoned, very slow and cheap feeling. Toyota are clearly heading for bankruptcy as this is what they're pitching against the modern cheap EVs now coming out in volume.
Looks awful...
Like the RAV4 its an ugly car.
Very noisy car
Bizarre title. This thing is offering no useful answers to anything.
What a remarkably undesirable vehicle lol
100%
the back doors sound so tinny, the infotainment display looks like its straight from 2012, the door handles on the inside of the rear doors aren't even chrome? and not to mention they still have the ugly lock thing above them that toyotas from the 2000's had
Who needs overpriced electrics
Why do you pronounce the letters "th" like an f? Watching from Australia enjoying but dodgy pommie accent not so much
Where exactly (timestamp)? Some accents in the south do pronounce 'thing' as 'fing', but didn't notice that here.
Nothing from Toyota is the answer for Evs.. not even bz4x can do that right now 🤦
CVT transmissions should be abolished from the market!
No I think you're wrong my friend. When driving a normal Yaris now for 2 years....and I love it. Not fast not slow but Perfect...4 me😎
Why?
Correction: non serviceable CVTs should be abolished.
@@RKMa64 you should try a proper automatic transmission, with a torque converter. It will revolutionise your driving experience.
Oh dear,
This is not a cvt but only called a cvt and more precisely eCVT. It’s basically an electronically controlled planetary gear set two inputs to one output. This is the best automatic transmission ever created on this planet and only people who has no clue about cars and technology can say otherwise.
I love this car
so good looking
why is normal yaris so ugly
my answer to evs are thy are crap and a right rip off cost to must to buy and too much insurance na petrol for me all the way better miles and cheaper to run
Cute.❤
