    4 wheel drive is an optional extra on the upper trim levels. Yaris Cross uses a rear torsion beam suspension set up like the Yaris hatch - unless you opt for 4 wheel drive where the rear suspension is upgraded to a double rear wish bone set up.

    Two small corrections… This is a regular petrol hybrid. A mild hybrid is something a bit different. Mild hybrids have tiny batteries that simply start the engine and provide a small torque boost at low speeds. This is a regular hybrid, non-plug-in. It allows the car to drive solely on electric power, solely on petrol or in Toyota’s case also on both in tandem, if needed. Also, the transmission here is an eCVT, which is a rather simple planetary gear set, and not a CVT, which would use a tensioned belt or chain. The eCVT is incredibly reliable. Perhaps more reliable than even a manual.

      It's no wonder the public are confused about hybrids, when road testers get it so wrong. Despite protests from the BEV fanboys, Toyota's "self-charging hybrid" is the clearest description for me

      @@afcgeo882 but you need to plug in a plug-in hybrid to get the best from it, whereas you can't plug in a regular hybrid. Self charging really is a good way of indicating that there's no plugging in to worry about.
      In fact there is a problem with "self charging" as a label - it doesn't differentiate between mild and full hybrids. So back to the drawing board!

      @@piglet5287 To get the ideal fuel cost, you do want to plug it in, but it isn’t necessary. The Rav4 Prime gets just one MPG (US) worse fuel economy driven purely in hybrid mode (no plugging in) than the Rav4 Hybrid, but is rated at 300bhp instead of 219bhp.

    I enjoyed your Yaris review and having watched a few other reviews we bought one and love it. I’ve just ordered a Yaris Cross Excel to replace my Skoda Yeti. One thing, you kept referring to mild hybrid which this car isn’t. A mild hybrid is not able to run on a battery with no engine running.

  • @ioan-luciancosma2345
    @ioan-luciancosma2345 Před 2 lety +32

    It's not a mild hybrid, that's different type of hybrid. If it's able to run 100% electric for short distances it's a full hybrid 🙂

      It can propel itself a few feet in EV mode from standstill, but only if you're pootling around a parking lot. Any more pressure on the gas pedal and the ICE comes on. But really, the system seems to be about aiding the ICE and saving it a bit of work. I don't know if it's worth the extra expense to get the hybrid (vs just a more powerful ICE), but it certainly improves MPG.

    A minor criticism of the car it would be that kick plate under the rear doors with the word 'Cross' on it. It looks OK with the contrasting colour but it almost makes a statement of the mood of the car, will they produce snap in options with words like 'not cross but a tad upset', 'Livid', 'Furious' or 'Giddy'. 😉

    Looks interesting, I would love if it's a plug in too. I can't find information on the EV side of driving, how many miles or kilometers can you drive, size of battery? For Rav4 hybrid you can drive 4-5km only in EV mode before battery empty.

    • @migmax2
      @migmax2 Před 2 lety

      On a full Hybrid that self generates the energy to recharge the batteries, you dont measure EV range on how far can you drive with one charge, as the battery is continuously charging. You rather measure what us the efficiency of the EV system, by the percentage of distance travelled in EV mode. This Yaris Cross should achieve well over 50% on EV mode. Meaning that over 100 miles in town you should get at least 50 miles of EV driving, Hence the amazing Mpg’s overall.

    Neither the "standard" Yaris nor the Yaris Cross seem made for a family. When you see how limited the space in the rear seats is and how much (or better: little) the rear doors open, you wonder what the designers had in mind here. Too bad Tish doesn't take a seat here (2:57), as she does here czcams.com/video/5CrW814W5kc/video.html (4 :51).
    If I (with my 6 ft) had to sit behind myself, I poke my knees into the driver's seat.
    Try to install a child seat in a Yaris/Yaris Cross, let alone "fill" that seat... 😒
    Compare the space, especially in the back, to a Honda Jazz or Jazz Crosstar. They are 13.5 or 9 cm. shorter, 7 cm. narrower and have a 4 cm. shorter wheelbase. But... much more space and much more accessible!
    Unfortunately, you have about 85 liters of luggage space less in the Honda (if you didn't know that a lot of junk fits in that empty space under the magic seats, for example a folding buggy...).

    Great video, Tish! The Yaris isn’t sold here in the US anymore, and it had a reputation for being a pathetic little economy car. This crossover version is well equipped, well priced, definitely will be reliable given Toyota’s track record, and will certainly be a great car for people who couldn’t care any less about cars. However, this is a jumble of things I hate about cars - it’s a Yaris, it’s a hybrid, it has a CVT, and it’s a small crossover; no thank you. And that CVT - god, Toyota’s CVT sucks. They need to learn a thing or two from Hyundai/Kia’s CVT. I do like the Yaris cross logo on the rocker panel, though! Reminds me of the Quattro logo on the rocker panel of my Q7!

Their hybrids are the best and only full hybrids that work well and in fact are simpler than standard petrol or diesel powered cars, no added complexity or weight. @@BorderlessTrio sorry, I shouldn’t have tried to wind you up with my reply. It’s not strictly a ‘click-bait’ title, it’s more of an ambiguous question. I do not personally think it’s ruined the design at all. All larger CZcams channels with use ambiguous titles. Please understand this channel is still just a hobby for me around a full time job. (Also I’m still learning, I thought a mild hybrid is when it’s a non-plug-in, however now I fully understand the meaning)

    If you’re going to review cars and mention their competitors at least get the name right.
    It’s the Skoda Kamiq pronounced Kam-eek not Kamyak!

    This car just looks weird and contrived, like most Toyotas. Literally anything else in this class looks better imo. Besides, it's underpowered as well. Next please!

    No use without AWD. Its a silly pretentious fashion car much like any other in this ridiculous segment, all with off road looks but no ability. The buying public are so gullible these days, sucked in by clever marketing and trendy social media influences. Reviews are supposed to be impartial as well, if anything is not to your liking, try and keep it to yourself. Its not your job to tell potential buyers about anything negative. Do that in a dealership and you would be out of a job.

      I believe the only way crossovers in general make sense is if they’ve got AWD, then they work. Otherwise what’s the point?

      Most of the SUV style cars are indeed in line with the fashion, or indeed creating it. In effect it’s a mini ‘Chelsea Tractpr’. Looking on the bright side, they are probably less vulnerable to low quality road maintenance - e.g potholes, compared with tight road clearance, but at the expense of poor air resistance, and higher rolling resistance as well, depending on the type of tyres fitted.
      I run one of the previous model Yaris’s, and am content with it. Not sure if I’d be interested in the ‘cross’ model next time, though. Depends a lot on the pattern of use.

      Second off, I define cool by either the style of the car or the types of people who drive them.
