Toyota Yaris Cross the Compact Crossover SUV: Toyota Yaris Cross Review & Road Test

  • The new Toyota Yaris Cross neatly packages a Yaris Hybrid into a compact SUV that sits 25mm higher on the road and looks great. It’s highly efficient, comfortable and practical with an electric motor that produces 79bhp and a petrol engine, that combined, offer 114bhp.
    There are different modes such as , normal, eco and a power setting and theres also an EV mode with a setting marked ‘B’ on the shifter which gives extra regeneration. EV is good enough for driving short trips with the electric motor up to 30mph, or until the battery is empty. Above this speed the Yaris Cross will run in hybrid mode, with the car’s ECU deciding when to use either petrol, electric, or a combination of both sources. The result of this is displayed on the digital driver information screen, which shows a breakdown of how much you’ve been using in electric power only. Believe it or not, you will cover quite a few miles on electric power & when we tested the Yaris Cross it achieved over 57mpg around town.
    The Yaris Cross still keeps the best features of its older sibling with excellent steering and good body control which combined give a decent comfortable ride. The CVT gearbox is also quite quiet compared to others we have tested that have this type of transmission. There are five different trim levels to choose from. Standard entry level car gets a number of features including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with wireless connection. Theres also an an optional head-up display, adaptive cruise control and a fully digital instrument panel depending on specification. We tested the Design trim, which included adaptive cruise control, automatic air-con, a reversing camera, LED lights, aluminium roof rails, privacy glass and upgraded 19" alloys.
    The Yaris Cross might be good, however, it is competing with some very good rivals. The Peugeot 2008, the Nissan Juke, Skoda Kamiq and the Volkswagen T-Cross and even the the Ford Puma could give it a run for its money. However, the Yaris Cross does have a couple of models with all-wheel drive that make it more worthy of a test drive.
    You will be pleased to know the Yaris Cross was awarded the full five-star safety rating when it was tested by Euro NCAP in late 2021.The car is also fitted with Toyota's latest Safety Sense technology, with features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance and even the ability to help steer around obstacles in an emergency. The Yaris Cross is also fitted with a rear-view camera even in the most basic Icon trim level, making it reasonably easy to park. Additional safety is also available to warn the driver of vehicles in the car's blind-spot, as well as prevent collisions when reversing in a car park or out of a driveway.
    Prices start from just over £23,000

    I’ve had one of these for 8 months. It will not do 65mpg on motorways. However, it will do that driving in town.
    I recently did a 2200km road trip in Australia cruising at 100-110 kph and achieved 4.9 l/100kms. But in city driving I get 3.6.
    Hybrids are less economical when highway driving.

    Thanks for the review. I'd like to clarify thou, the yaris cross hybrid has an e-CVT, which has nothing to do (except the name) of the belt driven CVT-s. It is a sun-planet-ring gearset which joins together the smaller and bigger electric motors and the petrol engine. The continous variability comes from since the smaller motor (MGU1), because it is coupled as star and planets with the engine.
    Quite a clever system it is!

    4:35 Nope. The e-CVT transaxle has no belt or cone. *Trust me* ... and the noise it makes is the engine running in its optimal rev range. The engine is not connected to the wheels, so it can run at whatever speed it chooses. What makes it sound "funny" to reviewers is that reviewers insist on things running like other cars they reviewed -- mainly non-hybrids, I expect.
    10:17 The centre 20% ("armrest" / "ski-hatch") *does* pull down and it has two cupholders (they're covered by the protective rubber mat which you can peel back).
    15:52 It's a 9" touch-screen you've got there with the optional £450 JBL Premium Sound System pack -- *Trust me*

    With the 18 inch alloys, black contrast roof, heated seats, under-runs, seat-back pockets and rubber boot protection that looks like Dynamic grade to me. Touch screen is 9 inch (Smart Connect), not 8 inch (Touch 2). Rear seat is a 40:20:40, only the entry Icon is 60:40. Rear cup holders are in the central pull down under the rubber protector. Roadside assistance is 1 year, not 3 years. Dynamic is now top of the range and costs an extra £2325 more than the Design. The Premiere launch spec has been discontinued.

    • @daxx10
      @daxx10 Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, it's a Dynamic.
      I regard Excel as the top model based on price and the number of features as standard. See the brochure and the number of ticked boxes. The reason I rejected the Excel was the horrible taupe (brown) colour of the seat fabric and plastic.

    defiantly a dynamic model, not design.....we just bought one..... we added the advanced safety pack which includes blind spot monitoring mirrors, intelligent front and rear parking sensors and rear cross traffic alert..... all what Leigh says below is correct.....
    also very important B mode is only for going down steep gradients where it gives increased engine braking for safety..... you do not use B mode in normal driving.... it doesn't put more power into the battery

    • @daxx10
      @daxx10 Před 2 lety

    • @Mister_H

      You use it when descending steep inclines to take the pressure off the brakes. It spins the engine without fuel usage to give you a similar experience to downshifting a traditional manual gearbox. I have never used B mode in the 6 years I have owned my Prius. It does not improve regeneration.

  • @jpmalopes
    @jpmalopes Před rokem +2

    Wonder why people keep saying that the B mode is maximum regeneration? B mode is engine braking. When the b mode is active the engine is used to slow down the vehicle. It is NOT about regeneration of the battery. Maximum regeneration is achieved with the braking pedal.

    Going downhill for long distances in a HEV can be problematic. After a while the battery gets fully charged. After that, the regular braking system is used. Problem starts when we're using the brakes and the engine is off. It wears very rapidly the braking system. To avoid this, Toyota uses electronics to activate the engine in those situations. Additionally, the driver can engage the b mode and force the engine to slow down the car. That said (I have a Yaris hybrid) and I can tell you that the b mode is almost unusable. When going downhill with the full battery, engaging the b mode makes the engine to rev up brutally. It is almost impossible to drive under these conditions. Solution is to go back to D mode and use the brakes. Toyota may have an explanation for this, but it is super annoying.

    Calling this an ideal family car...🤔
    The rear doors only open a crack and with the front seats as far forward as possible, it still looks fairly roomy in the back (see the seat rails at 8:31).
    But... with the driver seat arranged for me (6 ft., rather long legs) and when I squeezed myself in through that crack, I'm poking in the front seat with my knees.... ..
    Don't even think about installing a child seat through those doors and let's better not talk about getting a struggling toddler in that chair... 🥵
    In case you regularly drive around in your car with more than 2 people, ask yourself if this is the best car for you...
    I would look around (CZcams is your friend...) and check out for example the Honda Jazz or Crosstar. Smaller exterior dimensions, (much) more space in the interior, especially in the back. It fits 4 adults comfortably, possibly replacing 1 or 2 adults with 1 or 2 child car seats.
    For those who occasionally drive the car with more than 2 people: Take a good look around at what the competition has to offer and take extensive test drives. Can be surprising.

      apparently it's something like with Volvo, Volvo is known to be so safe that there's a joke that when it was tested the dummy came out in a better condition. While Toyota statistically breaks down so much less than other cars that there's a joke that when you buy a Toyota you marry her. Both are much more expensive than they look. Renault Arkana is the same price as Yaris Cross but it looks much more expensive. But apparently with equal care and mileage if you had the car for a long time you'd spend much much more on the Arkana, enough to make the Yaris as cheaper as it looks for you. And you'd give up on your Renault and pronounce it dead in 18 years if everything went perfectly. While you'll be driving your Toyota forever
