    There are so many supermini-based crossover SUVs now on the market that you'd be forgiven for wondering whether any new entrant to this segment could possibly bring anything fresh to it. Sure enough, Toyota's description of its contender, the Yaris Cross, doesn't sound too promising in terms of innovation, this car aiming to offer 'the high riding qualities of an SUV but on a scale tailored to suit urban areas'. Just like any other Juke or Puma-sized small crossover then. Except that the Yaris Cross isn't just another small SUV. You can have it with 4WD for a start which, believe it or not, is pretty revolutionary in this normally front driven-only sector.
    On top of that, for our market anyway, it comes only with a full-Hybrid engine. Not a token gesture mild hybrid like you'd get in, say, that rival Ford Puma or, perhaps, a Kia Stonic, but a full-fat petrol/electric powertrain that doesn't need plugging in but can run all-electrically some of the time. In this segment, only Hyundai, Honda and Renault can also offer that. If your interest in this Yaris Cross is starting to grow, you might be interested to check it out.

    Brilliant review as usual and not a mention of "Scratchy Plastics" when are reviewers going to realise we don't care about scratchy plastics or whether the bottle of water will fit in the door pockets etc.

    Great review. I´ve one Auris 18. Hybrid 2017 but I did the test drive with the yaris cross and I was very impressed with the behavior of the engine, much more agile, faster to increase in performance. The interior is weaker in terms of equipment, but the important thing is reliability and in that field... it's impeccable. If everything goes as I hope I hope to buy one

    Fantastic review I have seen my fare share as I like the car and am considering buying one. But I have never seen a review this well done, All of the information I could have possibly asked for and then some dumbed down in a way I can understand and follow. Thank you I absolutely loved this review.

    Amazing review! Purchased the Icon Trim in October - love this car! Haven’t looked back since. Friends and Family love it too! Always get questions from other drivers when parked

    Brilliant for seniors!!! Love mine. Perfect hip height, radar and fingertip control saves your knees. Amazing in stop-start start traffic, lots of safety warnings, short enough to park in tight spaces. Fun on open roads. No fussy interior. If you like fancy interiors just choose a seat cover. I have AWD hybrid in cloth as I think the fleather option is ugly. Had it 6 months and so so happy .

    Great review but B setting does not provide more battery re-gen it’s an ENGINE BRAKING mode for use only in severe downhill gradients to prevent brake fade ….sorry but every review of Toyota hybrids gets this wrong.

    • @johnkeepin7527
      @johnkeepin7527 Před 2 lety +6

      Correct. It actually reduces regeneration. A lot depends on the length of any falling gradient, not just it’s severity. I’m used to one of the older Yaris hybrids with only 0.9 kWh traction battery capacity, and it doesn’t take long to fully charge it on some of my routes. No doubt the larger battery on new ones would be better overall.

      My friend has just bought the petrol version, but I’m thinking the hybrid version is significantly better.

    Thanks, very useful information about this car. The specs I have seen suggests the turning circle is more like 11.2m not 5.3m (10:22). Several users state that B mode transmission (48:30) is to engage engine breaking on long declines. Apparently that avoids excessive wear on the mechanical breaks during long declines (where regen braking may fully charge the battery, switching regen braking off, causing mechanical brakes to be applied for long periods).

  • @zwieseler

    Had mine for 8 months, great car for two people. Or if you have a couple kids. Had one for 8 months. Good on rough roads and very good on fuel. Very well specced for technology, even reads speed limit signs....
    One thing, the B selection on the transmission is not for ordinary driving to get more energy into the battery. It is purely for brake saving when descending steep hills. I have never used it.

    Why is the steering wheel on the wrong side? Has this something to do with the hybrid system?

  • @pritambissonauth2181
    @pritambissonauth2181 Před rokem

    @6:51 Its NOT a belt driven automatic Transmission. It's that hybrid technology with MG1 & MG2 from Toyota connected with planetary gears!

  • @briank10101
    @briank10101 Před 2 měsíci

    B gear selection is actually worse for economy - it keeps engine on while slowing down. I'm a 10 year Toyota hybrid driver. Only use B for going down long inclines to prevent brakes from overheating.
