We drive the new 2021 Toyota Yaris small SUV and see how this crossover compares.
Have Toyota done it again? The new Yaris Cross hybrid SUV competes with the Mazda CX-3 and Hyundai Venue, as well as the Volkswagen T-Cross and Skoda Kamiq. But is this fuel-sipper the SUV to buy? Does it live up to the reputation of its big brother, the RAV4 Hybrid? Tom Baker from Chasing Cars takes a close look at the 2021 Toyota Yaris Cross GXL Hybrid to find out.

As a Prius owner, my inclination is to stick with hybrid for my next car but the C-HR from Toyota is polarising in look, boot is pathetic, rear visibility is poor both from driver and passenger perspective and it is only offered in the top spec model which makes it tips over 40K. This makes the Yaris Cross a much more compelling package with similar interior space, but more safety features, more boot space and even better fuel consumption. I think Toyota has nailed this one and you can have it for mid 30K. The let down is the lack of an centre arm rest and the look of 16 inch wheels which I think is acceptable compromise to me. Nothing is perfect.

I just bought a GXL 2WD hybrid coming end of Jan hopefully. Spare wheel is a must for me. There’s some cons that I can put up with like the opening of the back doors and lack of an armrest and visibility out the back is fine if I take the 2 side head rests out. Disappointing that the European version looks a bit more plush . I really enjoyed the test drive, needed a car and wanted a hybrid with a higher ride height so it made sense for me compared to everything else out there like a Mazda. TSS for mid spec is good. Love that the engine doesn’t even turn in some cases. I will keep this car until the charging infrastructure in Australia is good enough. For now I’ll get the best of both worlds.

3.9 litres per 100 km is pretty good for the hybrid version. My 2015 Toyota Camry hybrid averages 6 litres per 100km or under and use regular unleaded (91), the best I have been getting lately is 5.4 litres per 100km with the air conditioner running as well. I would buy a hybrid version of the Yaris cross as I like the higher driver position and would probably buy the GXL 2 wheel drive model.
Tom, can you please state whether these new Hybrid vehicles (all makes) you test, use regular unleaded petrol 91 or use Premium unleaded 95 or 98 as this does change the price structure per 100km the vehicles might achieve with the difference in the initial cost per litre of the petrol needed. The Yaris Cross looks far better than the basic Yaris 5 door hatchback and the CH-R. Is the CH-R going to be discontinued?

  • @Arpon001

I think the CH-R still will be better. Yaris cross to be a small suv needs more equipment, more power in the engine, 1.8 would be perfect, city, freeway, highway, some dirt roads, with the knowledge that "always" you will drive it with 3 passengers, and trunk loaded, because that's what it was designed for... we will see in which position of sales, and if people like it after a few months of use. Great review mi friend well explained 👌.

We are currently looking at this kind of thing and was in the local Toyota dealership. One of these things was in the middle of the yard and we wandered over 'Oh, that's new???'' we said. The salesperson was unsure why it was parked there and we poked around in it. Looked in the boot (trunk) that kind of thing.
There was another young couple looking at smaller hatch's etc and they went to leave and they had an older person looking with them. He hoped in HIS new Cross and left, after giving us a few dirty looks. The sales person, my wife and I laughed. Whoops. Sorry guy who decided to park in the car yard.
I think it looks better in real life that this video may imply? Something missing in translation to the CZcams Video.
Don't think we will be buying one, but had to relate the story.

Finally a Toyota that hasn’t had too many designers adding to the finished product. Much cleaner and less bling. I need to check out the colours, mud flap and nudge bar options. I bought one basic model of the Yaris cross hybrid two weeks ago instead of the CHR. It is under recall now and I have to wait another two weeks to pick up. But someone told me don’t buy the odd number cylinder cars as the second hand selling price will go down further than the even number cylinder car. It that true? And why?

    • @st3vo1210
      @st3vo1210 Před 3 lety

I don't think an odd amount cylinders affects resale value at all. There are Audis with 5 cylinders and they hold value well enough. Resale value isn't just determined on number of cylinders, there are many other factors such as overall quality etc.
There are many small cars on the market now with 3 cylinders as they are now very improved compared to old school 3 cylinder engines, such as more smoothness and better power delivery. People judging on cylinders need to get with the times IMO.

I wish car reviews would include more time on the ergonomics of the seats.
Back in the early 2000's Toyota had the most comfortable seats in the market as they were designed by a physio.
Sadly after 2011 they went cheap n painful.
Surely an ergonomics assessment could be added in.
Would also like reviewers to add in how the headlights work at night also.
I am more interested in these things.

Please quote me accurately: "It never really runs in electric-only mode, apart from for very short stints." You can hear what I said at 1:20. The Yaris Cross will coast and decelerate in EV mode, but any acceleration other than very, very light throttle applications will trigger the petrol engine to activate. I am a big fan of Toyota hybrids, but what I actually said (not the way I was misquoted) is entirely accurate.

I hear comments about this car ugly or prefer to have CHR, RAV 4 or this overpriced. This car is a nice colour and saves petrol cost. CHR, RAV 4 are four wheel drive and they uses up more petrol . Yaris Cross is not a four wheel drive but it looks like a four wheel drive . In regards to pricing, all car brands have cheaper and more expensive price and I don’t think any brand has the perfect car where all features are included and a satisfactory price. I looked at even used car in 2019 cost between $28,000 - $35,000 and one car in 2015 cost $23,000 and just these 3 cars in different brands not Toyota cars cost this much then I prefer buying Toyota Cross. yes they don’t have arm rest in the front, no vent in the back and no arm handle at the back either but it still consider a nice car to buy because nothing is perfect really. 2014 Yaris cost around 20k plus and 2021 Yaris Cross is $31,000 - less than $32,000 is considered alright, 2019 was a really tough year for so many people and so may businesses.

Unfortunately the base model is still $8k more than a Hyundai Venue, and $3k more than a Kia Seltos. It is over priced for its segment.

It's a Toyota, engineered to last. It will outlive those two Koreans. Worth paying extra for quality.

Toyota seem to forget that kids travelling in the rear seat normally use tablets... so where are the charge points?
