@@macattack123mattc3 It's just an i3. The thermals will be fine. The problem with the oems is, that they use the same shitty small coolers to cool high performance cpus while bottlenecking ryzen cpus with single channel ram
Those HP business desktops are usually fairly solid. They do generally have a proprietary motherboard and case design like Dell does - at least the small form factor ones anyway - but they are pretty trouble free in typical desktop use. Thermals usually aren't too bad even under full CPU load from what I've seen.

For real. Couple years ago I definitely still respected GN, but over the past few months Ive noticed a massive difference in quality. More professionalism, higher quality videos\editing's, and now even higher quality data. Cant wait too see what comes next.
I have a feeling this is really gonna shake up the fan market. Prior to this we just had to go blindly taking mfgs specs. This is gonna make some companies a lot more sales, and some are gonna tank.
Something is either fit for a task or it isn't. You can't tell if a fan is working for you?
@@1pcfred How should consumers compare fans against each other for different use cases? What do you mean by “fit for the task”?
@@bakedbeanfanclub I just pick the fan that plugs in where it needs to go and costs what I want to spend. So far that's worked for me. Fit for task means suitable for use. Means it works. Quite frankly the only thing that concerns me with fans is longevity. They all work pretty good when they're new. Eventually they all get old though. Then they're noisy pieces of crap.
@@1pcfred So going by what you said, I should get every fan in the market and see which "fit my task" and which don't? Why not have someone else who has industrial equipment do it for you and give you detailed metrics on it's volume, volume of air/s, it's value/price, etc so you can decide which fan is the best value per dollar? Maybe you need a quiet fan as your PC is next to your bed, maybe you don't care about it's loudness and just need a fan that moves as much air as possible for your mining rig, maybe you are just curious and want to know if higher RPM always means more airflow. Maybe you don't care, but people like me who are on a tight budget and want to get the best experience possible really benefit from this, apart from learning a lot.
@@1pcfred Is that how you buy all your computer hardware? You just go and look for the thing that plugs in where it needs to and costs what you want to spend? Good for you. Some people like to know what they're buying though so they can make informed purchasing decisions and make sure they get the most out of the money. Money doesn't grow on trees.

YES! It would be so cool if this could happen. It might be to much of a fluff piece for GN to consider but I'd love to see concrete data for.... let's say the top 10 fans.

I know you guys don't do a ton of server content. But it would be interesting to see some differences in 40mm and 80mm fans too. Noctua has some of these and comparing as replacements in things like switches and servers would be interesting. Also Ssme of those delta 40mm fans at 22,000 rpm.
As someone who also works with older tech, 80mm fans get used a TON in what I do. My current daily driver PC uses Noctua 80mm fans exclusively, so it would be really nice to know differences with those, too.
I have two 10,000 RPM Delta 40mm fans janckly screwed onto an old mid-tower I repurposed as a NAS, wholly exposed to shred the fingers of an unweary moron, and honestly, I don't think there is any reason to doubt what they are.

I have a RAM fan kit with 60mm fans on my workstation but it came with cheap acrylic fans.
was thinking of replacing them with some Noctuas.
They are 60mm in size and Noctua does make 60mm fans.

Those California Air Tools compressors are nice, esp the sound deadened cabinet style you went with. Really great for things like keeping all the ports together and accessible in the front

I’d love to see some older fans tested that have been replaced with “better”(and coincidentally more expensive) fans. Just to see how much improvement for the money we’ve been blessed with.
I have that exact compressor. It’s so great. So overkill for my use. But so great.

so, dafuq is the use case here? I haz big compressor but it's used to drive tools and sometimes make a bubble bath really quickly for the little offspring thing in my house.

Cant wait for an actual single source for fan specs. I feel fan brands definetly have... Unique methods that can show a fan may be better on paper than one fan, but in reality worse than another fan.
Hopefully this could also demenstrate strengths and weaknesses of fans better. Like 'fan a' is a good case fan but bad rad fan and 'fan b' is the opposite

It'll definitely be interesting to see the results and compare them to actual in case performance, normally you don't get to do that cause some manufacturers reports tests differently.

This brings me back to my final year of university and my final year project, which involved designing a rear wing for a racing car using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software. It meant I ended up putting together a PC with 32 GB of RAM back in early 2013, as well as an AMD FX 8350, which heated up my room nicely during those cold late winter months!
As an engineer, I'm super hyped for this!

Can this be used in some way to measure the airflow through a filter or radiator? It would be interesting to see if different fans on say an AIO as front intake can make a difference in case airflow even if they don't have a noticeable benefit to the part they are cooling directly
As I understand that's not really the intention. To test that kind of thing a real-ish-world setup is always going to better but has a much higher margin for error. The fan tester allows GN to say with a very high degree of certainty whether one fan is better than another on paper. This matters when simpler tests produce really close or conflicting results. One of the figures they will be able to produce is the pressure (in addition to unobstructed airflow) that the fan produces which is really important if it is required to push air through or past an obstruction. Manufacturer's given specs including pressure are always at maximum fan speed which realistically you're not going to be running the fan at although GN will be also able to check they are being honest there too.

I know this is probably at the bottom of the list but I'm one of the three people that has a 200mm radiator (yes for a 200mm fan), curious to see how bad 200mm fans are at pushing through those radiators

@@charlesballiet7074 My theory is that Steve does not want fan producers to optimise their products against GN's tester, instead of actually optimising them. (everyone still remember then CPU/GPU manufacturers optimised their stuff for benchmarks rather than games?)

Assuming this expensive and precise piece of scientific equipment does what it says on the tin and measures airflow, differential air pressure (aka static pressure) and wind speed with an objective standard then that is not an issue. the whole point is to remove subjective variables and give clean pure same point of reference data. just like how you can not optimize the speed of your car to trick a radar gun you cant change how the machine is taking the measurements outside of influencing the environment that machine runs in, that is why they are adding an air compressor so that even ambient air pressure that fluxuates with weather can be corrected for. He even said its what the companies who make fans use, that means its equipment designed to test the performance of different fan designs. Its already been optimized for it. that said that does not make it a perfect fan as other considerations like cost to manufacture might make a less optimal design be the one that's commonly used over the most optimal.
A rule of entertainment production is never making free publicity for someone. The maker company of the machine won't get a free publicity showing its brand and logo. Also, they can't show the serial number in public because someone can use it to supplant Gamer Nexus on a customer support line.
You can see it on a corsair fan testing facility tour from way back when, it's a Lon G Win LW-9 266 machine
Hope that for whatever fan testing this channel does that actual audio samples are included because simply listing a decibel level for a particular fan isn't that useful when it comes to selecting a particular fan with a noise profile that is tolerable/enjoyable to listen to. There is no way for a consumer to know what a fan sounds like simply by reading a spec sheet.
We've talked about this problem for years. We'd rather do a frequency spectrum analysis, but it will take time to set up.
How are you going to calibrate those audio samples to your sound system?
If you can create an algorithm to quantify whineyness then I'm sure some dating sites would be interested.

If anyone sees this and is wondering, It's a Longwin LW-9266. According to a 2012 tweaktown article Corsair uses this model which reportedly costs 45k USD

You guys really went no holds barred with this. I especially appreciate the research done and on-going learning you are doing to perfect your testing method as just a reviewer.
I work mostly with hydraulic fluid analysis, not air - and some of the equations have me a little bit stumped. Happy to be told I'm wrong, but here's some thoughts.
Q = Cd Sum(A) U --- this looks odd. Cd is a coefficient of discharge which is correct in terminology but sum(A) U (i.e. no Cd, or Cd=1) is the flow rate (Q) as long as U is the average velocity over the nozzles. How/where is U being measured? I can't see it's definition anywhere on the board. This looks a lot like the orifice equation (Qorifice = Cd A (2gh)^0.5 where h is 'the height difference' (read: pressure difference - we use water depth in hydraulic fluid analysis) of the fluid over the opening) but isn't. But also I was expecting the origice equation because we are talking about nozzles and pressure difference. You would then determine the velocity, U, as U = Cd (2gh)^0.5 because A would cancel on the RHS of the equation. Cd would then be an empirical function of the shape of the nozzle opening to account for turbulence and momentum effects. P1 = h1 g rho, which means h1 = P1/(g rho), so that would resolve to U = Cd (2[(p2-p1)/rho])^0.5 where (p2-p1) is just your dP, so U = Cd (2 dP / rho)^0.5 where Cd is the nozzle loss coefficient of discharge. Rearranging for dP you go:
U^2 = Cd^2 * (2 dP/rho) => 0.5 (U/Cd)^2 * rho = dP which is a mess inline. So your bracketting is a mess at 1/2 rho U^2 and is misleading (and doesn't include Cd)? if you want to write it inline like that with a 1/ at the front (if that's what you meant), it should be:
[1 / (2 / rho)]*((U/Cd)^2) = dP.... right? this would be better rewritten as [rho*(U^2)]/[2*(Cd^2)] = dP
If you meant that its (1/2) rho U^2, well alright but in engineering just use 0.5, it removes the ambiguity. And the missing Cd is still an issue, and shouldn't be in the top equation with Q and U.
edits: I had to rewrite this several times because trying to do the algebra inline is a fucking disaster.
edit2: this also all assumes air is incompressible and no coefficients of compressibility are included in the provided equations...
edit3: if you are only measuring pressures, then you don't know U and want to, and this would be U = Cd (2 dP/rho)^0.5 as above. And then Q is simply U n Anozzle where n is the number of nozzles and A is the area of each nozzle (assuming flow is incompressible). So Q = n Anozzle Cd (2 dP/rho)^0.5

I'm pretty stoked about this. I credit you guys to single-handedly popularizing airflow-focused cases a few years back thanks to all of your thorough testing, and shit talking. I'm hoping this will push manufacturers to deliver better products with somewhat honest marketing, because outside of big manufacturers, basically no other PC hardware reviewers are doing this. It'll really set you guys apart from your peers even more.
I'm curious how the air drier on the compressor will affect things seeing as how the tester is taking dry and wet bulb temperatures to determine humidity of the ambient air.
The air compressor isnt used for the actual air supply of the fan, that will just be ambient air.
The compressor is for pneumatics, so it controls things such as valves etc and thus needs to be dry or else you risk quick failure/wear on them.
It will have no impact on anything. The bulbs and the fan both use ambient air. The air supply is to control the valves within the machine.

Not sure if it's a requirement, but something to be aware of. The compressor will heat up the air which might alter readings depending on what the compressed air is used for.
That air compressor likely has a cooler on it. They're probably not going to be using a high volume anyways.

@@mcduvall2000 every air compressor I've ever seen has a cooling tube. Some are pretty rudimentary though. Just a couple loops of tubing.

6:40 recently did a "new" 10700k/Z590 build for/with my friend, he bought an MSI motherboard. Even though the MSRP was like $300, man the BIOS sucked.

This has me quite hyped for the coming year at Gamers Nexus. It is so uncommon for the consumer to actually have a "window in" to look at what the manufacturers are actually doing and validate what they say they are doing, even if this is a "simple" thing like cooling fans for computers. So excited for this!! When you get further into testing, try to account for the quality of the noise the fans produce. I've heard that some fans perform better in raw stats, but that they produce less uniform white noise and the more uniform the white noise the easier it is to ignore or block out. Thank you for doing all of this!
