It will take us several months to go through training, testing validation, and data acquisition to determine how to properly and best use this fan testing machine. Part of having extremely high-end and accurate equipment like this is that it also is easy to produce bad data if the users aren't trained, so we will be building experience, data, and standard operating procedures over the next several months while we figure it all out. It'll be exciting and we're looking forward to it! We'll publish some progress reports as we go. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible over the years. For real - back when this stuff was just a dream, it never seemed possible to get the type of equipment that manufacturers use themselves to then validate their own on-box specs.

considering what LTT got out of their short cable's testing trial, i'm expecting the fans side to be super bad compared to marketing..
@@Razzlion between companies making shit up, and pumping out chinesium of random quality, the fetid cesspit that is marketing could be super deep indeed.

Just in case nobody else has said this. Thank you Steve and Team for taking the time, care, and expense to provide independent reviews of products. You're right, nobody else does what you do and it hasn't gone unnoticed.
Thank you!
I like to imagine, that the machine was available in different colors, and Steve chose the GN blue one.
Plot twist: GN knew the machine was that shade of blue so they updated their intro logo to match it.
I reckon, since it's that expensive and purpose built anyway, you can propably choose the color of the tube to your liking with no problem
I doubt that, the color looks to me just standard industrial. Most newer machines are just white. Most of our CNC 5 axis who are 5 years old are white and blue. Some of our 3 axis who are from the 2000 are the same. Every machine from the 2000 onwards was just white...
Well he said they customized it so...
@@imnotusingmyrealname4566 Found it. It's the stock colour ;)
That velcro strap is in place in the product image too. I hope they didn't chuck it 😂
Theres a few variants, all same colour but different size cabs. Looks like they picked a base and tunnel (YLAzC1W on imgur) and had some different controls/sensors fitted

This would also be perfect for a collaboration with Major Hardware and his 'fan showdown' series, where he 3D prints and then tests viewer's fan designs. Some designs he's tested seem to outperform Noctua's A12x25 fans (including one design that was subsequently licensed by a fan company), it would be interesting to see if those claims could be more formally validated
Seconding this motion.
Aye
I have been asking GN & MH for this since Steve said they were ordering the Fan Tester,
also still no word from Thomas or MH about how the Manufacturer situation is developing
Oh god, that would be a dream collaboration! To have showdowns every month and then take the top 12 to Steve at the end of the year for final end of the season testing to determine the winner.
This!
Linus got a big new warehouse for lab things, also bought a cable tester, you bought a fan tester, is every tech reviewer going to be a tech researcher? BECAUSE I'M ALL FOR IT
That seems to be the way it's going for TechTube
When you get a lot of dosh to invest in capital assets: "Are you not entertained?"
They basically are replacing reputable written outlets so they need the tech and testing methodology to actually have some heft behind their reviews
Between this and Linus's cable testers, the both of you could really shake up the scammers on Amazon. More power to you!
Steve: "I bought a $40k machine to test fans"... Jay: "Look how far this fan pushes this piece of paper!!" lmao
I mean, that is a way to show to the audience that a fan is moving a large volume of air.
Just not how much. I mean they put all sorts of things in the Blowimatrons too just to show it can chop your fingers off.
@@jrok96 I don’t even quite understand how channels like J2C and LTT got as popular as they are. I watched few of their videos and there is literally 0 value. Just a guy who talks some loose thoughts and common opinions, and ocassionally throws in some random conparison benchmarks that do not follow any specific and transparent methodology.
@@jrok96 Adulterous huh? I don't think that word means what you think it does lmao
@@RacingRalphEVO Simply put, that's what the majority of the audience want. Easy to digest 'high prodcution quality' snippets. It's pretty much fast food culture 2.0. I frequent my local PC stores and you see all these young kid, talking like they know everything about a given component. This is where the market is going in gaming (everything dumbed down), the UI/UX market (again everything dumbed down), and the general tech market as well (look at Windows 11, all the advanced user options are hidden behind layer and layers of one clicks).
People are taking this the wrong way.. I'M POKING FUN AT JAY, NOT SPEAKING BADLY OF HIM
Just to add onto the point about serial being used for reliability: Another reason rs232 is more reliable is because (in most implementations) it uses much higher voltages levels for data transfer (normally 12v) This makes it less prone to data integrity loss with long cable runs (a good rs232 cable at 9600 baudrate can be 15m long with no repeaters and perfect data transfer). Also in theory higher voltage means it is less susceptible to crosstalk as was mentioned in the video.
That makes perfect sense. Thanks for adding that!
Adding to the cross voltage note, you can always use optical isolated adapters, to ensure zero current/voltage is moved from either side of the equipment.
@Lassi Kinnunen 81 Yes simplicity is also an aspect. Serial is very simple, and easy to program for. I could imagine trying to write software for lab equipment that ran LAN or native USB would a nightmare (not to mention the drivers it would need)
Also correct on the simplicity of using, plug in, hit connect, it works. No fiddling with IP addresses, or usb drivers.
Why not use fiber optic cables then?
@@georgeshapiro301 I would think because it is cheaper and does not require transceivers
The equipment looks like it's designed to answer questions like: "Which fans work the best at hypersonic blade tip speeds?"
So happy to see GN expanding and improving in so many ways recently :)
"I don't always do unboxings, but when I do, I get the absolute biggest box possible"
James May unboxed a car once.... sorry, Steve.
In fairness, it was a custom box for a gag, but they went all out and actually boxed up a car.
As someone who worked in the air freight industry for over 15 years, the crushed "do not stack" cone on top of that other box is by far and away the least surprising thing in this video.
as someone who has worked in warehouses for 20 years, can confirm
As someone who works in retail on the receiving end for a store, I can confirm the warehouse and truck drivers at best ignore fragile or common sense warnings when stacking pallets. At worst they are actively attempting to break the products on purpose.
I remember one study, where shock sensors were mounted inside packages, they found that packages labeled FRAGILE suffered more abuse during shipping than normal packages.
Those signs are more like guidelines than actual rules 😂
@@infernaldaedra "welcome aboard the black pearl!...."
$10k for shipping and that didn’t cover someone setting it up for you? Dang! Looking forward to the results of the testing!
Adding RGB will increase the accuracy of all testing, right?
Great video. Loved the safety talk and the planning before just going head first into things. This was an awesome unboxing
You guys are building a legit laboratory for testing pc components. I love it.
So is Linus so it’s going to be interesting to see manufacturers called out over the next few years.
I feel like it was a missed opportunity to not bash the box open with a crowbar using frenetic rapids wild hacks till it exploded into splintered planks... you know... just sayin.
@@jakedill1304 they missed so many memeable moments. If they claimed Linus was there and then went to black with the crunch noises and a clip of an impromptu Linus drop test scream... It would have sold the fear it exploded on ground. They expanded their building, but not their editorial meme output.
The Age of Empires 2 sound effects were a nice touch.
The slide down the ramp gave me some flashbacks to my military days, of pushing a 120mm mortar on its wheeled carriage down a ~30 degree ramp some 20 meters. It's not a pleasant feeling.
Somehow, your experience sounds a little bit more stressful than pushing a fan tester down a 1-meter ramp...
@@GamersNexus yeah, you wouldn't get hit with a statement of charges from Uncle Sam, or possibly court martial for destruction of government property if you had tipped over your Fan Tester.
I was Navy and worked in the engine room. We did some sketchy shit moving sometimes very heavy stuff.

I was also thinking military, but more along the lines of "you know what could solve this? about 30 privates. They could just brute force lift it wherever it needed to go."

You say serial port but in the latest USB rerererenaming conventions they decided to just label it USB 0.1 gen 1, for ease.
Serial is great. If all else fails, you can use a knock-off Arduino and two hours of your time to DIY your serial adapter.

I'm so excited for you guys and I'm happy you're sharing this for us all to come along for the ride!
Really impressive how methodical and thorough you all were getting it out. Your attention to detail shows in every video you make.
Serial is reliable, simple, present on just about every microcontroller and can be transferred over long distances using RS458 for example.
USB requires more complex hardware and software in the microcontroller, is more susceptible to electrical interference and might require specific drivers on the PC side.
Serial will be around for a while, most sensors etc. only need a fraction of the USB data rate and USB is more expensive both in development time and cost per device, while serial is pretty much "hello world" level of complexity.
As someone with a B.S. in aerospace engineering, this machine makes me so excited. I'd love to see it in action sometime Steve!
Very exciting! Looking forward to the stats you pull out of this thing.
You should keep spreadsheets of all of the results on your website and update it with every fan you test. Would be cool to have a table that updates as more and more fans get tested. This would be great for cases and other items that can be objectively measured
Good idea I'm sure fan companies would hate it 😂😂
This will be a game-changer for inexpensive fans once you guys get it up and running. After your tests, people just might discover that "more expensive" doesn't necessarily mean "more better" for a particular application. I'm most looking forward to see how some of the $5 fans I use perform in a static pressure situation.
and let all the idiots blowing smoke at fans with an i-dun-o sound-o-meter near by to prove a fan is "the best", cower in fear.
I can save you time. Just use the cheap one. Pay a bit for a ball bearing one if you wanna be fancy. In this form factor the difference in flow rate under a particular size and RPM is irrelevant. They're all going to be Functionally the same.

Coming from the industry and seeing enormous quantities of industrial machines being unloaded on our facilities, you should had rotated the box 90 degrees while on the pallet instead of rotating and sliding it on an angled, non-solid platform. I'm really excited for the upcoming test video's with this equipment. I can only assume test of the most cheap fans, most popular fans and most expensive fans are on the road map.
Never been so excited about stuff that is not mine :) Well done guys, can't wait for it to be put to good use!
5:35 That AoE II sound effect ❤️😀
Was hoping someone would notice!
Scared the hell out of me getting it off the pallet, but I can't wait to see testing results!
Hopefully those small drops didn’t jar anything out of alignment.
@@bubbledoubletrouble I doubt those were anything compared to being on the truck
I probably felt watching them unload it the same way if they watched me build a computer. It's ugly but it works.
it's good to see new channels coming into their own. good luck, GamerNecks!!! hope to see
you go far. Subscribed.
I cannot wait to see the results, especially when it comes to Corsair and Noctua products. Keep it up GN
I can't wait to see the results of all the tests. This is the best piece of equipment I've seen so far
Because of this video, I just made my first purchase (but not my last) at the store. Go get it, guys!
Thank you so much for the support!
It would be really interesting to see how a few varieties of mesh and radiator combinations affect flowrate for fans of varying static pressures
Including various amounts of dust and pet hair build up.
looking forward to seeing some fan reviews in the future
soooo excited for the future content regarding the fan testing its something that has ALWAYS just been taken at face value no reviewer has been able to validate this kind of thing
You have to eventually collaborate with Major Hardware and some of his fans 3D printed fans. It would be a great chance to see if the testing standards he has hold to a more industrial level test rig.
Its either gonna disprove his entire testing series.
Or if the results turn out to match each other it would render this expensive industrial testing rig kinda redundant and lose its value as the "higher standard and more accurate fan testing method".
Its in noones interest.
@@Bergondora I think at best it will show the value of being able to control outside variables and understand "Why" fans behave the way they do. It's one thing to do a field test and cover basics like noise and cfm but going deeper is where Steve will remain king of the tech reviewers.
So much work and dedication. I'm looking forward to see what you can do with that equipment. BTW I loved the AOE2 noises.
Maybe an idea of a cooperation with major hardware. With his fan showdown. That afther each season he takes the top 3 (for the first time all previous seasons top 3) to get it in the mix. Would be an awesome thing to see what those fans can do
I LOVE the random AoE2 wood chopping sounds around 5:40 :D
I am SUPER excited to learn about this and see some results. :)
Same! So excited to start working with this!
I love everything about this. I am curious why you had so many nameplates and such covered and blurred out? I would think that people in the industry would be able to ID it on sight, and those are the only people that may get some advantage from knowing what it is. Otherwise really excited to see content from this when you get everything figured out.
If it's custom or spec built I could understand not wanting unique identifiers made public.
The blurred gray plate with black text looked like the heavy equipment standard stamped metal badge with your model + options / serial #s, technical data (operational tolerances for shit like amps, volts, rpms, psi, etc.), and company info.
Serial # aside maybe the builder asked them to blur the rest for any number of reasons. If you make these and sell idk 10 or whatever a year to 'fan company X' that gets exposed for fudging figures by 'unboxing channel Y' that only buys one of these possibly ever and the only distinguishing difference from your machine and your competitor is a few stickers...
It may be the same thing like covering the apple logo or some such that tv stations tend to do. For those who want to know it's a really easy device to find on the web, It looks like a Long Win W-9266 Fan PQ Performance Measurement Apparatus.
@@jsutrov Also Steve may have his own reasons to blur the specs - such as making it harder for fan manufacturers to target his setup and game the test results.
I look forward to seeing how this new machine will be able to verify which fan's LEDs are the best for helping airflow... Will LED density be the winner, or a specific spacing between them?
AOE II logger music with research complete SFX during the timelapse was just genius - kudos to whoever added that :p
Congratz guys, can't wait to start seeing the results of this.
After all, once GN case reviews started getting big - suddenly and suspiciously the manufacturers started to put work into thermal design. Sure would be interesting if fan designs suddenly innovate
Thank you guys for all the great content over the years. just bought my first large Volt Modmat. Merry Christmas GN Crew!
Shout out to the editor for adding the suspenseful music and effects. I was on the edge of my seat.
i am really looking forward to your new fan tests, done in this fan tester.
Please start with Noctua (NF A12x25 / A14), since they are till now considered as the top class fans (and hopefully will be in future too) and go on with the Arctic P12 / P14 (+ RGB edition, it is told they are even better than the non RGB edition) since they are for their price absolutely fantastic
Serial is not buffered and does not rely solely on polling the way USB does, so it is more accurate for telemetry data from scientific instruments. When you look at a serial reading it is exactly what the machine is sending at that moment, but with USB, it can buffer between polling, and data can be inaccurate, especially when graphed. I would strongly recommend using either onboard or PCIE serial ports for scientific equipment like this and not using a USB to serial adapter because they introduce another buffer. In NJ, the state's division of weights and measures requires that Serial connections from scales for vehicles (weigh stations) not use USB adapters between scales and tabulation computers.
if they used an off the shelf converter from amazon sure , but these will be converters using FTDI chips and there's generally an almost 0% error rate , its such a small buffer that it has a negible effect , the factory could of also programmed the chip too or modified it.
@@georgeelliott5498 I understand USB adapters for scientific and specialty instruments have come a long way, but I'll always be slightly distrustful of them. That said, even with direct serial you still run the risk of windows deciding to randomly detect your specialty scientific instrument as a Microsoft Serial Ballpoint Mouse and ruin your testing run.
"WTF, why did we stop getting data, and why is the mouse cursor going crazy?!?"
I think of it like an analog vs digital light meter. You can push the button on the digital meter and get an instant, accurate reading, but with the analog you can hold the button and move the meter around and watch what the needle does as you change the position and angle, and it helps you understand the light quality of the room, what happens when people or objects move, what things cause reflections that change the light reading. To emulate that with the digital meter, you'd have to push the button over and over and over and remember the results from one button push to the next.
Either way, I'm sure the data GN produces will be far and away higher quality than any of their contemporaries.
Noticing so much more personality in this video :) Different music, colors, format.. nice
4:20 Aside from the millions of other reasons, I respect Steve who shows concern and prioritizes safety especially for his employees.
Watching this makes me extremely glad you contracted out most of your new office build.
Should do a collab with Major Hardware and test the fan submissions to his fan showdown.
Do your first test run of the tester with Major Hardwares Fan Showdown series winners, it would be a great collab
I’m digging the southern engineered makeshift jack…well done!
I was so nervous watching you wheel that down the ramp... Nicely done!
