In this benchmark of the PlayStation 5, we're testing thermals, power, and acoustics, and also running a clip of partial tear-down & disassembly of the PS5. We left the liquid metal untouched (and heatsink mounted) for long-term viability and endurance testing, but fortunately, the board layout allowed us to still easily probe memory and VRM / MOSFET thermals since these components are not directly under the primary heatsink. In fact, the memory barely has a heatsink at all, although the VRM is contacted to a heatpipe and smaller heatsink. The PS5's large blower fan seems to spin at a low enough speed to maintain noise targets and avoid the complaints of the previous generation, but we think there's room in Sony's design to improve thermals in both the chassis walls and the fan PWM aggression.

Great Job there! Thank you for putting the time and effort to test every little aspect and detail possible!
This definitely makes me wonder how people who stuff their consoles into tight tv stands or poorly ventilated areas are going to fare long term.
Probably just end up being a slow degradation of performance, like most things that sit long term in a confined space.
Maybe that's why they made it MASSIVE so it doesn't fit! Ha ha
That is what I am dealing with now. My tv stand had 6 cubbies (3top row that are shorter in height, 3 bottom row that are nearly 1.5-2x in height). I have my cable box, XB1X and PS4pro in the top cubbies, I cut slots in the back panel and have USB fans with the consoles to push hot air out and pull cool air in. However, when I swapped the PS4pro for the PS5, it is so big there is not much room. I barely go the fans in, but they seem to work still. I've forgotten to turn them on and eventually the console's fan went from inaudible to audible, but not very loud either way. Luckily the top of the console's intake vents are mostly forward facing so the white side panels form a "v" that helps block out some heat from the back of the tv stand's cubby, so even with the fans off the air that is getting pulled in feels much closer to ambient than the rest of the cubby.
That said, I am considering trying to stuff it vertically on top of the tv stand somehow. May try behind the tv and just relocate my router or Switch dock.then that leaves an empty cubby with holes cut in the back that I need to fill for symmetry's sake.Would love to find a PC case for it, but everything that is thin and wide enough is 1-2" too deep, so I am stuck with an Elite 110 case in one of the bottom cubbies, which limits me to
@@ImeanFFS lmao well played, Sony. Well played.

It's rare to find someone as honest as Steve and his crew, because people in the industry are scared of not getting any review samples anymore.
Thank you for all the hard work that you have been and still are doing for the customers AND manufacturers.
And while it may be harder for smaller channels, the show of integrity raises trust exponentially, because I'd rather a trusted review come out late rather than compromised. The cost of losing viewers' trust is orders of magnitude higher than buying any product
@@HululusLabs Most channels would not have the means and ability to do testing like this. And most would not want to risk damaging the hardware. It is not a question of integrity, in fact it displays integrity by not embarking on testing you do not feel you have the aptitude to do.
And it is the end user experience that is what is important. The hot memory is only an issue if it leads to issues within the use life of the console.
@@Safetytrousers it might be a planned obsolescence thing 😉 If a console is made in a way that it will eventually make a suicide, this might force the customer to buy a new one. Or newer version.

GN : Sony cooling solution could be better
Sony v2 : removes ~30% of the heat sink
Yes, but less mass doesn't equal worse heatsink. I couldn't find a source, but so far I've heard it might run 2-3c hotter (which is probably margin of error/unit by unit differences) and it actually runs quieter. It's a new fan, different heatsink material, and design. It's not fair to compare as we don't have a reliable source yet.
@@Colty0 Wrong. The mass of the Heatsink Does Matter. If you've ever built PC rigs before, or worked on electrical components that require heatsinks, you should know this. The point of a Heatsink is to absorb and dissipate heat from electrical components that generate heat. The larger the surface area, the better the heat dissipation assisted by the Cooling Fan. What Sony did wrong here is they removed a huge chunk of the heatsink. What's worse is they replaced the Copper with Aluminum. I assume you already know this as common sense, or have already learned this in High School, but Aluminum is not as Thermally Conductive as Copper. In fact, Copper is one of the most thermally conductive metals available. Since they removed it and replaced it with Aluminum, heat absorption and distribution is significantly worse in the new model. The only thing they did right is the Cooling Fan having longer Fan blades than the old one.
The only point of conclusion here is that the internal components themselves are Generating more Heat. Hence, why the newer model is pushing out Hotter air than the old one.
@@roundabout9452 The design is quite different. No valid tests have been ran to compare. You're not wrong, but the heat pipe design is just too different to compare by mass/looking at it. Chill

Also it stops aerodynamic properties, because see if you have a bent area you change the course of the air flow knocking out the equilibrium of thermal dynamics
So what is mean is if you have a narrow gap and air you will have better faster cooling but if you widen that gap you compromise the air flow
@@Ricardo29j If you watched the video he literally said that he put the wires in a place where there was already a gap 😂 Also he ran the wires along the board which don't make contact with the plate 😂
Face the facts, this is probably the most comprehensive method of determining the PS5 thermals you are going to find 😂
@@IISenjuHashiramaII Also there is no airflow inbetween those plates in the first place, it's literally screwed shut right next to the fan^^
@@Ricardo29j you really dont work in engineering anything tech do you?
@@Ricardo29j oh such a heated fanboy, don't forget you Sony sippy cup gaming water
Could you do one for a series x also? Curious to see the thermals on that and the thermal paste
yes
At the end he said it's planned but it depends on when they're able to get one in for testing.
It's just toothpaste
The effort you guys go to is on a whole other level.
if your around the pc community, its pretty logical thinking. Heat=throttle.
throttle=Bad proformence.
Thanks, Steve!!
Excellent video, really appreciate the detailed temperature breakdown. Definitely better than just pointing a FLIR at it and calling a day! Are you also planning on doing an Xbox Series X/S thermal teardown? I'm really interested in seeing a comparison between PS5's temps and cooling solution vs Xbox, particularly with the many (highly speculative, imo) overheating allegations posted by other reviewers!
Keep up the great work!
The depth and quality of this test is really great. Awesome work GN! Would love to see how this contrasts with the XBSX.
This is the only channel you need to visit prior to buying a particular product. Great in depth reviews and insanely good methodologies being used.
Absolutely agree, makes DF review a rookie test.

we need a revisit with the new one
no we don't lol. it's virtually identical
Those memory temps are giving me bad flashbacks of the YLOD days on the Phat PS3s. Yeah, that was due to bad caps, but I'm sure the thermals didn't help. This is literally best case too. Sitting on an open work bench at an ideal room temp of 70F, and that memory is still over 93C. My office/game room can get pretty warm in the summer even with AC in the house. Be interesting to see what the thermals are in a hotter room or if it's crammed in an AV cabinet. Really tempting to wait for the inevitable "slim" revisions after seeing that.
This makes me want to wait for the GEN2 revision :)
Thanks for the in-depth review.
An important note regarding boiling water to calibrate thermometers. Water only boils at 100C at 0 meters elevation. I believe Cary, NC is around 150 m elevation, so water should boil at about 99.5C, but in a city in Wyoming (avg elevation ~2000 m), it may boil closer to 93C. So, if your thermometer reads 95C, don't assume your offset is 5C, unless you know what temp your water actually boils at.
That doesn't matter bc he's testing all of them in the same altitude.
@@MaxIronsThird I made a general statement regarding calibrating thermometers using boiling water. It does matter if you're calibrating your own thermometers, so that you can determine what your offset is for your elevation.
Amazing! Subbed.
The disc version of PS5, It seems that the Blu-ray Disc device covers the heat source of VRM MOS and BOT DDR.
Here, the digital version of PS5 without the shielding of the Blu-ray Disc device and may achieve better heat dissipation performance.
God damn I love GN. Sure the long form videos are hard to watch quickly but the amount of accurate and useful data provided makes it worth the full watch
I would rather have the fan louder with temps cooler.
wont help with the memory
Yea that small ps5 box does not help
@@Messiahs It would, though. More heat ejected from the case will cool thst entire steel plate and ultimately the memory. It won't be as drastic of a difference as the SoC but it will drop.
Im curious why they specced such a monstrous 30w fan. Perhaps it has a dust clearing mode like the PS3?
Same, I run my Pc fans on a higher setting and I didn't care my ps4 pro fan ran fast. I kinda enjoy the sound.
@@94XJ Good point actually. It'll probably be a minor drop in heat, but it's something you can do right now I guess.
They should just do an update where you can change the fan settings if you want it to run faster
Both excellent videos on the topic of PlayStation 5 thermals. I was just wondering and maybe others like me too. What is the height in mm of the thermal pads used in the console and what would be the alternatives if one decided to improve them with ones with greater thermal transfer for a better performance given in: (W / mK). Thanks in advance!
Please do this for the Series X too.
cant wait
And Series S for that matter.
This
Its very well build, its amazing great engineering on the series x
yes please please test xbox sx
Engineers: we need to make thermal pad bigger for 5$ more.
Sony: no
$5x 100 000 000 of ps5 is alot of money .
And I think it was give the retention bracket more clearance. At the end of the day they probably just wanted to keep noise as low as possible. If they crank the fan like 10% faster then it would probably bring the thermal down some. But then noise. I wish they just have you even a high ,med, low option for fan control.
@@maxpawa9282 I totally agree but there is one problem... If you do that why don't you give people a option open the console without losing Warranty? Those warranty stickers are so anti consumer. If a consumer what improve the thermals by themselves or clear the dust or replace some thermal pads or paste... Why don't you give the consumer a option do this to make the console work longer and healthy without losing your warranty.
@LeFlavius_NL Then why do you put them? In Sony's live stream they even said removing the sticker removes your warranty. Now I don't know can u go against it but do you really want go in court against Sony?
@@strohhuttv8848 in some countries the right to repair supersedes the enforcement of a warranty sticker, if you are in one of those regions Sony cant fight you its literal mandated law. if you cause damage while attempting to repair then thats on you.
didn't know what I was getting into when I clicked on this video. absolutely loved it, comprehended pretty much everything. which is weird because I never learned any of it, want to though. definitely studying this in college. so thank you guys.
btw- what was is the name of the program to make graphs in order to collect data?
Sony: "Plug it in and play! It just works! Nothing to worry about with this console! Its silent!"
GN: "Get ready to fire A LOT of people."
Pretty much if you live in a place where the ambient temperature is below 30 degrees.
@@santhoshsridhar5887 30c thats 86f. Considering MOST people have some level of home cooling yes, it will constantly be below 30c
Good video. Just wondering what adding another hot nvme expansion will also do for heat
Temps that make Arizona jealous
Depends on where the module is located. It is quite close to the memory modules but it is also exposed directly to the side of the console. Could be that the heat may manage to escape through the exposed side rather than become trapped (as long as the cover plate for the ssd slot isn't used, not sure if it could be) and cause further thermal spikes. This is a tricky one. Seems like Sony will have plenty of RMAs to deal with.
Damn. Mad respect you watch gamersnexus. Alot of youtubers in your genre could benefit from having a basis of tech knowledge when reviewing games
I don't imagine it would be a good addition nvme drives are really hot
I'm waiting to see how that will work too. Maybe Sony will be extremely selective about what chips they approve for use, because of heat.
G'day Steve,
Other Channel PS5 Thermal review: We pointed a laser thermometer at the PS5 to test it's temp while running & got ?°C/?°F
G/N PS5 Thermal review, here is our 35min explaining why & how we pulled it apart so we could add thermal couples to the important performance parts for Internal Temp Readings
why I am Subbed to G/N & don't waste my time with other 'Thermal Performance Reviews'
Ps also love Hardware Unboxed for their Quality In-depth Reviews but they won't have one for PS5 so not included here
This is a super cool video. Consoles are interesting since they're so custom, but we can still compare and contrast with PC parts.
Nice info. I have a small usb fan pointed at my ps5s intake area, hope it helps with airflow a bit
Every time I see a video of people doing thermal tests of the outside, I always comment thermal testing only matters internally not externally, external just shows how well the fan is dissipating the heat.
Or in this case hides the problem because you have a couple of good side thermal insulators...
@@or1on89 yup
Not even 5 seconds into video and i can already say that this is gonna be great.
This was a really informative video. I will try to ensure the ac is on when I play my Ps5. Hopefully Sony will remedy this soon. Thanks for what you do.
You act like something is wrong already. All this doomsaying is retarded.
What if we drilled a hole with a circle saw or Dremel to give it direct air in, install a mesh layer just under the hole, then added some sort of heatsink or more copper material to the ram.
This would probably solve most of it.
And let the fan run higher.
Well, it's certainly an improvement over the PS4 cooling. The PS4 is the loudest home consumer electronic I know of, and you had to pretty much fully disassemble it to clean out dust.
@Hardware Hacker he probably washes his clothes with a washboard
@Hardware Hacker I mean a washing machine is electric, not electronic right?
@@basshead. Eh, since you watch GN taking one apart, cleaning it, and repasting it isn't that big of a deal. Just kinda inconvenient.
If you buy a used one though it's pretty much an absolute must, I bought a 3 year old one and it was just disgusting inside.
Maybe its age is at fault but my 360 is far louder than my PS4 (the PS4 is often dusted internally tho)
@@josephh5993I think it's primarily the launch PS4 and launch PS4 pro that tend to get extremely loud. My old 360 (2008?) was never all that loud in comparison, same for my PS3 slim
