    The hot primers photos on the bench are excellent examples of what a reloader should watch for when using hot loads. It shows when to stop. Great group on the Re17 where you have 4/5 into nearly the same hole with 41.4 gr.

    I’m addressing your high left first shots... It would be interesting if you did a first shot only or cold bore group. Take one shot on a bullseye, put the gun to side for an hour or so to cool down and then shoot your next shot for a five shot group. Would also be interesting to see if the same pattern happens on a cold day vs a really hot day. I know this a 3 year old video and maybe has been addressed but I’m just seeing them now. I also have a new 6.5 creedmoor in a CZ 557 that I haven’t shot yet. Gun: check, rings: check (after two attempts to get the correct 19mm dovetails), Ammo: check. Self: ... half check - recovering from spinal surgery so I’ve had lots of time to watch your great videos! Keep em coming Johnny!!

    I’ve tested hundreds of loads chasing distinguished. A few things I found in small rifle primers is 205M AR have a thick cup vs 205M. They are my favorite. 7.5 Remies are also thick. Winchester pierce. CCI BRs are thicker too but I thought not as thick as 7.5s. Not quite sure now. Also, with Reloader powders on a clean barrel i always needed 7 shots on a match AR to get the groups to settle down.

    Another possibility is to have a firing pin bushing installed, especially in a $300 rifle that has a loose fit between the pin and bolt. Gre-Tan Rifles is known to do it but in my Savage 110 I adjusted the pin to stick farther out where the thicker shank is and trim off the excess over 0.056

  • @blindboyjonny
    @blindboyjonny Před 2 lety

    I know this video was three years old, but the fix to the compass can be made by replacing the stock firing pin spring with a heavy duty spring. This guy is also famous for hand fires/misfires. The extrusion of the primers is because the pressure is pushing the firing pin back against the less than robust spring. A new spring will fix both problems.

    I got mine used about a month ago. I sighted in with 3 different kinds of ammo.....Hornady North American Whitetail 129gr Interlocks (shot just a tad over 1"), Winchester 130gr Power Points (horrible groups), and Remington 140gr PSP Cor-Loks (.6" groups). Strangely, I shot the best groups with the thread protector off the end of the barrel when shooting. Did not shoot near as well with it on. Dropped a ranch cull 11/3 here on my son's ranch in Llano, Texas. Optics used is a Pentax Pioneer 4.5-14x42.

    Go back and watch your first shots with 47.3 grains of RL-26. Watch the position of your front sling swivel stud and how your gun recoils with each shot. Notice the vertical rise when the stud contacts the front rest and how the gun recoils normally (mostly rearward with very little muzzle rise) when it doesn't. A tip I picked up from Gunwerks is to ensure there is a couple of fingers worth of clearance between the swivel and the front rest.

    Glad I watched this video. Rebarreled my Ruger Precision Rifle with a Krieger heavy 1:8 twist. Blissfully loaded up some H4350 41.9 grains as I had done with my old barrel. Big mistake. Just paying attention to the chronograph. Muzzle velocity seemed at little high (30 FPS above usual) then bang, smoke from the action. CCI BR2 primer blowout. Morale of the story, assume nothing, ever. Always start low and work up to maximum charge weight.

    In my savage stealth I get amazing results with the 140 bthp, federal brass from their non typical white tail line of ammo, 47.8 grains of reloader 26, and CCI 450 primers. It's a bit over pressure I'm sure but it is a constant half MOA at an average of 2811 fps with a SD of about 12 fps. Could be better for sure but it is just so consistent I can't bring myself to develop another load.

    Great stuff JRB, love this 6.5 Creedmoor series. Shooting .5” groups and putting 4 of 5 rounds through the same hole in a gun that cost $197 (that’s what I paid) after rebate is a insane value. That first round shot drifting high on a cold bore as you know is normal. And of course credit to you as your shooting has improved also, your doing great. I just picked up some More RE17 and will definitely pick up some of these Hornady 140 Match BTHP bullets to try.
    JRB I also think CCI 41 would work better with hot charges, but with all the issues of hang fire and certain small primers being picky with hang-fires and also the cratering issue with the small primers in 6.5 Creedmoor what do you think about switching to Large rifle primer brass for continued testing in 6.5 Creedmoor once you wear out this brass? The large primer 6.5 Creedmoor brass from Starline also looks to be a good value.
    Thanks again.

    Just an idea for you, I think I noticed in your form. Your cheek weld may be shifting a touch (1/4 to 1/2 inch) back and forth on your stock. I think I saw the biggest shift on that 41.4 after your couple minute break till you "settled" back into your groove. May look at adding a kisser button for better cheek consistency. A rubber band or painters tape placed on the stock at the corner of your mouth really helps for our precision and smallbore shooters during training. Just a thought.

    RL17 is looking pretty forgiving. Didn't notice any impact shift at all throughout the test loads. That's something positive to look for when I'm pitting together a hunting load. I agree the #41 primers probably a better choice for max loads.

    Have you considered getting your bolt face bushed with a reduced diameter firing pin? My 6.5 Creedmoor AR build had constant cratering, top hating, and piercing of the primers with the standard 308 bolt and firing pin. Got the high pressure bolt with reduced diameter orifice and pin, and all the primer issues went away. Might be something to think about.

  • @faithandfarmingtennessee872

    Remington primer cups are all thin from my experience. I made the mistake of using them in a 223 load for my AR. Pierced a few primers without realizing it and marred up my firing pin a little bit.

    • @jimhans1
      @jimhans1 Před 6 lety

      Joe Franklin actually, read here and remember the CCI #41 is the same primer as the CCI 450, they have the same primer cup thickness as the Remington 7 1/2. Remington designed the 7 1/2 for the benchrest shooters who are loading 22PPC and 6PPC to massively high pressures, upwards of 60k psi. I think what killed his primers here was the sloppy bolt face to firing pin fit. Cratering is an issue at any pressure from this gun, but even at lower charges it is excessive by my standard. Were it mine, I would send it back to T/C and ask them to fix that.
      www.accurateshooter.com/technical-articles/primers-and-pressure-analysis/
      Edit: if you had said Federal instead of Remington you would be correct though, they've been notoriously thin from day 1.
