Hard neck isn’t for braiding. Much better to braid the soft neck varieties. The scape stem is usually too stiff and will snap if you try to braid. Love you guys! Happy fall gardens!
The first thing I said. They are totally wrong. You can give it a try but it’s the soft that everyone braids
I took that in stride because it was a newbie talking.
I used to get SAD every winter, but gardening and my greenhouse has helped SO much!
You can freeze peeled garlic cloves, you can make garlic oil ( put 2 cloves in olive oil and leave it for 2 months in dark)

I grow my garlic down the middle of most of my beds - seems to help with insect attacks early in the season. Have found that you get bigger heads if they get plenty of space around each one (I usually plant 4-6 inches apart) and a lot of sun. Same with onions for that matter. Agree that hard necks would be very hard to braid - we always use softnecks for that.
I store my garlic crushed/chopped mixed with olive oil and frozen. Lasts longer for recipes.
i just planted this morning 70 soft neck and 60 hard neck i enjoy both!

From the perspective of the older sister, I can tell you that my little sister adds new horizons for me. She is not afraid to go places and try new things, and finds many interesting places and experiences. Little sisters are the best!!!

I'm growing garlic for the fist time (Zone 9a)...planting Chesnok Red (hardneck) & Early Italian (softneck)...using a barrel style planter
I started buying house plants for a mental health winter blues type thing. We're moving and a fall garden is out for us right now but I think I'm going to plant some things and try and test my winter growing!!
You can do it
Start simple with lettuce, radishes, or spinach. That is what I am growing this fall/winter (my first one too).

I have limited garden space, so I tend to plant things like onions in tubs so that they won’t interfere with my spring garden space.

You can braid hard-neck garlic, but it's not as easy to braid as soft-neck, because of the scape that it grows, it's a little tougher stem and not as flexible as a soft-neck.
Glad you and your sister had a good time starting your garlic planting! She will be very pleased that she started growing her own garlic and got ideas from you!

I tried garlic for the first time last year. I did not get large heads but I cooked with everything I grew. I planted more this year and hope for a little more success. I appreciate the info about climate for hard neck vs soft.
I lost my mom over 10 years ago and that has been the HARDEST thing I've ever had to deal with. The amount of joy and healing I've found in gardening is incredible. So yes 100% gardening is therapy. 😍

when I was last in Israel it was garlic harvesting time. They were selling the garlic with the long stem and long roots still attached and the aroma was intense and so wonderful and the taste was beyond expectation
Something that keeps me from getting depressed in the winter...is starting my seeds indoors in february. So the months that i am not gardening are the holiday months...and then i can start my garden plants indoors After that. :)
Well I was so inspired I went out and purchased organic garlic and planted it hopefully it’s not too late.
Depending on your zone but I bet you are just fine

It's not outdoors (we get -40 degree weather here sometimes, and lots of snow), but some indoor shelves facing south will be a little patch of happiness for the winter 😀

Just planted our Fall garlic today here in Ontario- I chose a hard neck variety as it tends to do better in cooler climates than a soft neck. Great and informative video for the first timers! Love to see education content. Happy planting ladies :)

It's so sweet seeing you and your sister in the garden together. I also agree that everyone should grow flowers even if you're just leaving them for the pollinators. I have hummingbirds coming to drink from the pineapple sage. It brings me so much joy coming out there and seeing them. Grow to feed your family but also grow something that feeds your soul too.

I grew onions from seed last year! It was the first time I ever planted onions and I didn’t plant enough but I was sooooo excited when I harvested real full sized onions!! They were absolutely delicious! Always plant anything! I’ve been gardening fifty years now and I’m still excited to branch out into new things!!

Hard neck is essential Over here in the freezing temperatures where winters are always below zero to negative 40 degrees and have a short period of summer. Most of the soft necks can’t handle the extreme freezing temperatures since multiple feet of soil will be frozen for months. So it’s important to note that based on your zone. Soft neck can make it outdoors through winter but you will loose a lot of them. But they do produce bigger heads. Also elephant garlic is excellent for those that want a big head and live in winter zones.

Great meeting Jill’s sister! Getting my garlic in this week. I’m going to use a container… easier on my ‘ ol knees. Thanks for encouraging me. It is good to have things to look forward to during the dark cold days of winter. Southeastern Ct can get a lot of snow and temps can drop brow zero. Look forward to learning more from you…. I’ll be planning small container and raised bed garden this winter!!

I agree with our sister. I garden nearly 100% for mental health. It's my happy place.
In zone 9b/10a it's time to order soft neck garlic. I'll put them in the refrigerator for 6-8 weeks to mimic a cool winter them plant them out late December early January.
TThis is my Very favorite VLOG of yours so far...Sisters....After cooking on a fairly large scale (200+ weekly), I've found a combination of fresh and dried garlic (and onion, and potentially other dried herbs/spices) mixture really enhance flavor. I encourage you to try the dehydrating...which is then granulated or powdered...not salt, unless you add salt.

I live in NY and have had my hardneck garlic last, in a basket, a full year in a 65-70 degree room. I harvested in July, saved the biggest bulbs and planted in October and then fermented the garlic from last year. I am interested to see if the newly harvested hardneck garlic will keep for a year again.
I've got mine planted and hopes they work this time I grew some in a pot but they were small but put in fire cider it had a purpose lol.

If you don’t cut off the scapes on hardneck garlic, the energy will go into the flowers and not the bulbs of garlic underground. The scapes are delicious, so cut them as soon as you see them in May/June (depending on your zone)and harvest much larger bulbs in July.

In Zone 6 planted hard neck garlic last week. Hard neck can not be braided easily.

I'm growing my first fall garden in western North Carolina zone 7b and everything has some bug damage. I used diatemashas earth that hasn't helped . I saw your video about BT and I went to tractor supply but they were out. I'm hoping to get this under control because it's been discouraging to see the bugs getting the food. Thank you for your garden videos because I'm a beginner also.

This is what we bought and our beds are 3ft wide by different lengths. After we put the hoops the 6ft wide mesh is perfect
Actual planting info starts around 15 minutes
I live in Canada and plan on planting my garlic in the next week or so. I will lay down some chicken wire over the garlic so the squirrels don't dig it up. Love your fall garden planting but I don't think it will work here. We are in zone 5.

I struggle with winter too! Ah I live in Canada and it gets so long sometimes. I am also going to be postpartum and am nervous about doing that in the winter.

Hi Jill and Brooke! first of all My little sister's name is Jill, so love,love,love that name! I just planted my garlic today from garlic I harvested this past summer. I planted about 250 cloves. It wasn't easy because I have RA, OA and back issues and have to sit in a chair to work in my garden (wish I had raised beds, It's not in the budget, we are on a fixed income). I started growing flowers like Zinnias, cosmos and dahlias for cut flowers to put in my house and especially my almost 100 year old Mother-in-law's room. (she just went to be with Jesus last Saturday!) Off the subject of gardening for a moment. just have to tell people. She just met Jesus almost 2 years ago at almost 98 years of age, and was baptized in his glorious name a couple months after that. so we celebrate her going home. it's a joyous thing although we miss her. Back to the flowers, she so much enjoyed the bouquets I brought to her from my gardens. I've always grown flowers in pots on my porch, but inspired by you and your friend Jessica(from roots and refuge farm) I started growing more around the yard and in my garden to encourage more pollinators. Ok, i watched this video last night. Got up this morning and planted 120 cloves of my garlic i've been sitting on for awhile now. maybe a month lol i just didn't know when i should plant it. Anyway, its in the ground now BUT what i wanted to ask was right after planting the garlic do i need to water it in really well and do i keep watering it or just cover it with straw and let it be?
Great question. Depending on your average monthly rainfall. I always immediately water mine after planting but here in AR, we get alot of rain so I don't have to water much after the initial watering.

I haven’t grown garlic yet and have a question 🙋🏼♀️…if you pick the scape off of the hard neck garlic does the bulb stop growing? Are you growing entirely for the scapes or are you getting the garlic later in the season too🤷🏼♀️
If you don't cut off the scape before it flowers, the bulb will split to prepare to grow the following year. Split bulbs don't store well and should be used first because they have already started the process of sprouting. The bulb is pretty much done growing when the scapes start. The extra time in the ground is developing the papery covering that helps it store longer.

No hardneck can’t be braid . Also hardneck like cold weather.
For zone like 9-10 soft neck is better due to not getting too very cold
Does garlic need a cold stratification period? I live in zone 9a in Florida and I was told they need that I have mine In The refrigerator right now.
If you are planting a hardneck variety you can leave them in the fridge up to 3 months and plant them next year... If you are growing a soft neck you can cold stratify but not as long and then plant. Soft necks are for zones 9-10 who have less of a winter
Hard neck garlic is the one that grows in the wrong way in the bed 🤭

You really don't need to water it unless your area is going through a severe drought!
