Thank you all SO much for believing in our farm & our channel. You guys bring so much joy to me
Thank you Jill and Shaun.
Great information
Nice 👍
super interesting
So helpful thanks for bringing us along
Great video jill
Thank you ❤
Great informative video thanks guys xx
I'm glad you made this video. I have found mine is usually an ant pile near by. It starts with my butterfly weed plants. They quickly go to my green beans and brassicas if I don't treat them in time.
👍🏻
Hi Jill I just found some aphids on my bell pepper plants i remove all the leaves because I'm overwintering them and I did make a solution with dish soap and water the soil now I have a few new leaves coming in and I seen on a leaf where it was a few aphids on the leaves I mashed them have not seen any more so far thanks again for sharing this video.
Great video. Lots of educational stuff.
Thanks Mr. Baker❤
Take a Master Gardners course.
Move to Arkansas!
I have aphids on my beans but now 8 see they have started moving to my okra. I'm getting rid of those tomorrow!!
Oh those sticky aphid infestations! Ugh! I’ve heard they have to have the right weather conditions. Warm days/cool nights.
👌👌👌👌😍
Yes I habe some carrots going right now in the green house in a mineral bucket recycling the mineral tub
Those make great growing containers
Good morning
I watch you this morning and am finding a little bit of peace for just a few minutes. Yesterday I found out that my son had left this world and went to be with the heavy father. So I have given so many tears and I found some peace for just a little bit.
I thank you 🙏
OMG I'm so sorry to hear about your son. I pray God wraps his loving arms around you and walks you through this tough grieving period.
My condolences . May god wrap you in his arms being you some peace
I had ALL of my tomatoes killed by aphids this year. It was awful and I cried.
They are pesky little devils
I had the same exact problem with my turnips this year! So glad y’all made this video.
Does Shaun have his own blog page thank you 😊
czcams.com/channels/PdO6eNiJn77hB7RdGnBNgA.html
My first time ever wish jad another or I would have something else
This was a super interesting lesson. Thanks Teach!
Just a reminder to everyone, LADYBUGS LOVE APHIDS and will eat thousands of them in a day! You can purchase ladybugs and have them shipped to your door. They come in a little mesh bag, dump them on your plants and let them go to work!
Much easier, less work, and often times quicker than chemicals!
Where do you order them from?
I need to be brave and try a radish. I just grew a couple in the spring for experience, but was scared to eat it. Lol
There are so many ways to eat them. Give it a go
“Move to Arkansa”...You laugh but my husband and I are making our second trip to Arkansas this week to pray and scope out the land. We shall see where God directs our steps.
What part of AR?
This is the kind of content I LOVE! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I never had a problem with aphids until this year. Had to tear out my tomatoes back in August. I had never in my life seen so many aphids.
Can you do some content about fermenting. Do you have to store fermented canning jars in the fridge or can they stay out at room temp. I know it's basically water & salt &fruit/veggies.
czcams.com/video/GUPmOG9s1uE/video.html
Thank you so much!!
Wow…the timing of this vlog couldn’t be better. Hearing Shawn explain why the infestation occurred, I immediately checked my radishes and turnips, and I had the same problem, though mine not to the point of wilting or an off scent. Sooo, I had to pull up ALL of the 12x3 foot bed, even though a lot of the radishes and most of turnips very small. Oh well, learned a valuable lesson in my classroom today. Unfortunately, I had planted 4 cabbage and 2 broccoli and cauliflower right next to them, and there is some infestation. I’ll be neem oiling those tomorrow and all the other ones too. Also, there were tons of aphids on the soil after I pulled the root crop. Do I need to spray the soil there also? I am so thankful for this vlog today. Thanks Jill and Shawn
What about the soil?
Great question. It definitely needs to be sprayed
My radishes grew out of grown and didn’t get nothing but tops so sad 😞
Oh no, maybe get a soil sample analyzed to see if your soil is deficient in something
Well…I cannot grow radishes. I wait and wait on them. The tops get tall but when you pull them it is a long skinny thing.
Some varieties grow that way. Wonder what kind you planted?
I have never heard of Dikon radishes. I still enjoyed that practical demonstration on how to. Trouble shoot. 🌻🌻💕💕
It's a prominent ingredient in the Korean fermented cabbage dish Kimchi.
@@EhGardenerGuy I googled and found I can get seeds in New Zealand so I shall give them a try in the autumn. Thank you for informing me.
Would it be ok to feed the greens to the chickens as long as it was away from the garden.
Yes it would
This year was my first year growing radishes. Pulling those bright red round roots out of the ground in spring was so exciting!
Great information, thanks! Hugs and love from Texas!
I have never seen a radish so big. This was very good information! Thanks!
I love how you show the good and the bad, we all have issues in one area or another and it's great we get to learn from each other! I'm also awaiting the ginger harvest!!!
How do you eat the diakon radishes
We eat them raw alot but they are also fantastic fermented foods
Have y’all ever considered a fb group to interact?
Great idea but we can barely keep up with emails, comments from Instagram and CZcams
I need details on his knife

You rock
Have you ever considered hydroponics or aquaponics?
Great question. Nate is very interested in both. We have checked out Ben's at VW Family Farms setup and another. We just aren't ready to make the investment into everything you need.
will you have to do anything special with the soil where the infestation was?
We use plastic bags to put the leaf with aphids. Then the aphids die and the leaf can be composted or made into tea from them instead of burning..
Great idea, thanks for sharing
Great video!!my broad beans are covered in aphids atm..
Im not able to have a garden anymore. Im disabled. But i did for for years. But i do try to have a few tomatoes and things in pots on porch .as bad as things are getting in the grocery stores. Your lucky to be able to grow. And put away for your family. You best grow and put away as much as you can. You can not hardly find anything or affor what you do find anymore. I try to buy from little markets and locals when they have it. ❤
I've been learning about aphids go to plants too much nitrogen.
Very true
Can you show how to ferment radishes? I've not had good luck fermenting .
czcams.com/video/GUPmOG9s1uE/video.html
@@WhisperingWillowFarm Thanks for the link Jill. Funny, I watched that vlog and totally forgot about it. Got radishes in the garden here in zone 6 so I will try this. God Bless
Do you put soapy water or other treatment in the bed after the harvest?
Sometimes yes
Hey Jill! I never heard of fermenting kolrabi. Can you do a video on that please?
I would do it just like this video
czcams.com/video/GUPmOG9s1uE/video.html
I never had Dikons radish.
I have to try some.
Thanks for sharing this it was very informative and I am hoping that some of this will help inspire my Pat to help heal her and get back to wanting to garden. Keep up the good work and God bless you all
Hi loved this video. Where can we learn from you all on fermentation.
Yes, would love to see how to ferment.
My ancestors and some relatives are from Arkansas. Newport area. My grandma grew up on a cotton plantation and my grandpa on a farm in the early 1900s.
First time gardener here, trying out a fall garden and so excited for this! We started so many radishes, some are doing well (they have aphids) others sprouted but haven't grown much at all. I am thinking it is possibly a soil issue since they are new raised beds. My question is, once it freezes will the aphids die??? Thank you for all the knowledge, love and for being such an amazing garden cheerleader :)
No they won't die. You need to spray
Thank you!!
We have been hand picking but I will get some spray
I have only see in my yard( minimal gardener) if I plant wild flower seeds. They love them.
He eats a raddish and turnip like me I usually use the leaves as a handle and take a bit yum...these are awesome I am going have try these out
I am so used to little radishes except one time we grew some type white radish in a food plot and they were really good. I love fermented foods but never tried radishes. Need to add to my list.
You will love them fermented
I had the same issue with my Brussels sprouts. I grew the Red Bull variety and the green Long Island variety and the aphids adored them both. I probably need to use row covers next year. Good luck with your next radish crop. Hopefully it goes better. ❤️
Depending where you live, aphids can over winter in the soil. Best to treat the soil too. Not just cover your row.
Where do you get your Daikin radish seeds from? I'm looking and all I can find are the white ones.
We actually get those from our local Farmers co-op but you can get them from Hoss tools as well
@@WhisperingWillowFarm thank you. I'm looking for the red ones like yours. We don't like radishes because to spicy/hot. But you said those are sweet so we're looking. And I love your videos and so very happy you and Nathan are now at Jess's. So happy😘
Will you make some sort of a general guide for washing? I know that generally you don't want to wash things until you're going to eat them. Can you expand on that please!
Will work on that
I am going to move to Arkansas 💜🌻💜
Girl come on, it's a beautiful state
I moved to central Arkansas 43 years ago after completing college. I love the hills. It is a beautiful state. I never regretted my decision!
@@len10ten hello neighbor
Can you feed the infested leaves to the chickens or pigs?
Not sure
Can you feed the leaves to chickens?? I did that with my kale leaves! I hope that’s okay 😖
Not sure
Hey Jill, Good subject today, always ready to keep my notes going on getting rid of bad boys in the garden. Soap always works for those pesky things , I always add a few drops of oil for sticking power myself.I grew Japanese Red center radish this year. They are fantastic to ferment , crunchy and addictive... Would you believe I just picked a cup of raspberries out of my rasp bushes??? My garden is freaking this year , in many good ways.
Yay, that means you are doing something right
I love hearing about the problem and solution. I will try Dikon radishes next growing period. Now I need to learn how to ferment them. Hint! Hint!
czcams.com/video/GUPmOG9s1uE/video.html
Wow! Those radishes are as big as potatoes! Sadly, I had to trash a milkweed before planting due to hundreds of aphids like that. Nasty.
you should see my parsnip... 140 days now they are sooooo full in montreal even if its like 3 degree celsius... spaying didnt work... i should have got rid of it long time ago...
Package instructions are "general guidelines" not to be taken as rules.
Does Diatomaceous earth work on aphids? I’m trying to keep all the stuff in my head
Great question. I'm not sure it would be very effective
@@WhisperingWillowFarm I just looked it up. Yep DE kills aphids! Yea!
OMG I think I had seen some on one of my eggplants or pepper plants yesterday along with many ants. I need to build a place to burn stuff now. Sorry that happened, but wow those radishes. I Love the Diakons there is a fermented pickled salad the Japanese make with carrots that is sorta sweet and I think its made with rice wine vinegar and its delicious.
Yum sounds good
I love roasted radishes, but around here I actually plant them for the leaves more than the roots. The leaves have more nutritional value than the roots, so its like getting 2 crops for the effort of 1. We use the greens like you would spinach or chard and when we have a large harvest of greens that we won't use all of it before it goes bad, we dehydrate or freeze dry the leaves and powder them to add to soups, sauces, stews, etc to pump up the nutrition. Shame you didn't have another option to deal with the aphids but I understand needing to get them out for good.
Omg I think I had a few on my radishes last year, but I washed and ate the root. Did I do wrong? Should we have not ate them?
You were right to eat them, no worries
I have aphid infestation on peas and beans every single year! And now on broccoli and cauliflower
'Tis the season... Aphid season :D
I’ve used daikon radishes as soil improved for thick, heavy clay. I overseed during the winter, then in the fall cut the tops off leaving the radish in the ground to break down. Now I want to grow to ferment. Can you share Shawn’s wife’s recipe. I checked out her website but nothing is there
Thanks!!!!
That's what happened to my lettuce this past spring. I sprayed the heck out of it with soapy water and it did work, but I had to do it a few times. I was able to salvage some of the lettuce.
What variety is that and where did you get the seeds from?
Had no idea that there were different colors! Love daikons... I was actually using them to replace potatoes for awhile. I thought you weren't supposed to walk in your raised beds? Does that compact the soil? Do you have to sanitize shoes to not spread the aphids?
I don't sanitize my shoes
What variety of Daikon radishes do you grow and where do you purchase your seeds?
These came from Hoss tools and they were labeled Daikon
I’ve looked at Hoss Seeds and they don’t have Daikon radishes available. Any other site I’ve looked at show Daikon radishes but they ate white. Might your radish be a different variety?
Found them at Johnny’s after rewatching the video and hearing you say Johnny’s at the start. The variety, I think, is KN-Bravo. Does that sound right?
When I do radishes I seem to have all tops. I’m doing something wrong for sure. Any suggestions?
I would start with a soil sample. Sounds like you need some Phosphorus and Potassium in your soil
I am having alot of trouble with my cabbage plants, any suggestions please?
What problems?
@@WhisperingWillowFarm something keeps eating the leaves, I have treated over and over. Nothing works.
Do you have insect netting over them?
@@WhisperingWillowFarm I do not have netting over them. Gosh I guess that maybe what I have to do. I have really tried everything else. Thank you all so very much for helping!! Blessings to all!!!!
I hope you and Sean filmed more and get harvesting Ginger for an upcoming video 😁... this is me patiently waiting 🤣
Coming real soon
