Been growing the same garlic from the cloves since 1947. A family member brought it over from italy at the end of ww2 my dad grew it until he died in 2000 now I grow it, gave something to my cousin who lives In Illinois. I don’t plant until the middle of October. Garlic wants to freeze in hard that what gives good separation of the cloves. So plant close to first frost and then just let it grow you will see little green leaves poking up in march as the snow melts than I usually harvest around the 4 of July than enjoy the best garlic till almost the following year
Wow. What an incredible tradition! And lucky non go heirloom garlic for you!
Thats incredible! What a great tradition and to be able to have that same gsrlic that came over from Italy! Just wow!
Would you be willing to send me a few bulbs?!
I would be willing to pay for a few bulbs…❤😊
I would love some too, that is if you decide you want to message any of us requesting it. Happy gardening.
I don't know how many times I've watched this and your other garlic videos, but growing garlic has become less intimidating. I found a local variety that I planted last November and wound up harvesting over 70 bulbs in June. I can't wait to do it again!
The MI Gardener store is one of the absolute best places I've ever found for seeds. Thanks so much for the valuable content, and all you do.
Thank you for that, ourselves and the team really try our very best to make sure this is always the case!

@@markbearfoot6742 it's in the video description.
AGREED GOOD GERMINATION TOO!
Do you recommend adding peat moss?
I saw this video a year ago and this year I'm finally taking the plunge and trying this. Today we picked up garlic from a local nursery so we know it's perfect for our area!
Where I live (south Alabama), garlic grows like a weed. We don't plant it. It comes back each year on its own. I tried to eradicate it in one spot, but it still came back. From the main bulb clusters, little roots grow sideways and grow individual bulbs. When you pull up the plant to harvest the main bulb cluster, those side bulbs get left behind and sprout new garlic the next year. And of course if you don't harvest a plant, those bulbs come up as well - at least where I live.
lucky duck!
I live in Maine. After my first year of growing, I noticed the next the same. I thought I had missed pulling them up. I didnt realize that they would spread. So awesome. Love garlic!!! Planting this week for the first time in 6 years. Excited.

You could not have released this video at a more better time. I plan on planting garlic and onions for the first time in my garden. Great tip about the spacing in which I am going to definitely try. Fingers crossed that I will be harvesting some delicious garlic bulbs next year 😊 thanks for sharing!!
Southern Entertaining how did your harvest go?
Mo betta
Thank you for addressing all three of my questions: how to prep soil, spacing, and crop rotation! I now have the confidence to plant!
Ok. You inspired me to get some garlic and grow it. Ordered a pound. Have a bed ready. Garlic should arrive October. Now I’ve watched the video and I am ready! Thanks! ❤️
I bought your seeds last year. They were of such great quality. Most every seed produced. You will be my main source for seed before I look anywhere else.
I LOVE gardening almost as much as you and this really is one of THE very best channels on here! I grew up in Rochester Hills, MI and we always had a 1 and 1/2 acre garden for just veggies and we had flowers that my mom and dad collected eveywhere and many fruit trees as well. I now live in central Arkansas and although I can grow things like Carolina Reaper peppers and other things that I could not grow in MI, I GREATLY miss my pure black 2 foot thick topsoil! I live in the foothills of the Ozark mountains and It's so beautiful here but the terrain here is solid rock after digging down about 4 inches so I container garden and thats ok but I miss my good rich black dirt! Thank you so much for all your helpful videos! Btw, I used to build and race Iceboats out at lake St Clair. Take care!
Thank you for posting this. I ordered 5 heads from your store just now. Can’t wait to grow them!
You’re so awesome Luke! I’m growing garlic for the first time this year and I’m so excited. They’ve sprouted already but I watched your video on that too :D thank you so much you’re so inspiring
I would love to see how you do a lot of your storage for your vegetables
Check out Garden Like a Viking's video on the garlic harvest
I love that you always explain what is actually going on, the science of it.
Even though this video is 2 years old, I didn't realize your shop sold garlic. I bought 8 heads and can't wait to get it going!
Love your channel! Been watching for 3 years and so happy to have such great information. I like the fact that we're both in the same or close growing zone, northeast Wisconsin here. I keep coming back every year for refresher lessons when it's planting or harvesting time. Thank you for all the work you put into these videos, really appreciate it!!❤❤
Exactly what I needed as we move into our new homestead! Thanks Luke!
I ordered some garlic from you last week! Excitedly awaiting their arrival! Love your videos, great info.
Got my seeds the grab bags wow I was so blessed got a total variety, bunch of things I wouldn't have ordered so the coming spring planting a lot of new things for myself. Thanks Mr. and Mrs. M I Gardener!!
The garlic from the MI Gardener Seed Shop is GORGEOUS! I can’t wait to taste it next year! Thank you guys for getting it to us at such a reasonable price! You’re the best!!!
Thank you! Great video.
I forgot to somehow let you know we picked and ate our first acorn squash from seeds we bought from you. It tasted sooo amazing!!! What a difference compared to store bought acorn squash! We plan to grow a couple plants next year. We have harvested some butternut squash, but haven't tried them yet. Thank you so much!
I’ve watched many of your videos, somehow missed that you have a store. Look forward to checking it out after watching this vid and planting my garlic
great - love the extra row!! just going to plant out my garlic so finding this garlic lesson is timely (i'm in the southern hemisphere)
Your Garden is SO EPIC! I am planning my first set of raised beds for this Spring. I'm currently confined to containers.
Thanks for reminding me to plant my garlic. If it ever stops raining I will get on it.
Got two heads of garlic from y’all! Excited to. Grow them for the first time this year in our rental home!!! Keep up the great work here. I’ve been learning so much from you guys!
....so how did it go?
When did you pull them up!?
Woo hoo! Got my soft neck seed garlic in the other day. Can't wait to plant it!!!!
So excited. I missed out on planting garlic last Fall. Going to order garlic from your store for this Fall. I learned a great deal about amending the soil. That’s where I have been lacking! Hoping for better harvest next year.
Kudos to you young man, you are so wise using the spacing method.
I did this last year and have so enjoyed the harvest of garlic. Looking forward to fall 🍁 🎃
Ordered your garlic. I learned so much today. As always, so fun and informative. Thanks Luke, you Rock!
You are wonderful to follow. You don’t ramble on with useless stuff. I started gardening after watching you...I’m in Toronto Again..thx
I visited your seed store because I saw Roots and Refuge’s video on her favorite seed companies.
Same here! So glad to find y’all!!!
Same!
Me too. 😃
Unfortunately they are sold out of everything try Morgan county seeds or Holmes seeds good prices too hoss tools is outrageously over priced.
Me too!
Thanks, always learning something new from you. I am in Massachusetts, I cook with garlic all the time. So I guess I need to plant garlic.
Haha! I'm watching this just before planting ... "now can go out and plant your garlic"! Yes sir,
i'm on it! Getting cold at night!
g'day mate. I have always wondered how to grow garlic and this vid gave me so much more information then any other vid that I have seen about this topic. Thanks for the tips☺️
Ive just had a go at garlick, i have a lovely peppermint plant and beef tomato, oh and scotch bonnet and jalapeneos chillies are sprouting but im just having a go at indoor window size pots to c how they turn out. Xx
I love your channel !
Always something interesting being demonstrated
So great that you are offering people good, safe garlic to plant. I have been using 'Music' (hard neck) for a few years now and just love it and am so grateful that I have disease-free stock. The friend who taught me successful garlic growing in my area said to plant October 15 and harvest July 15...it has been a great 'rule' to follow. (Although, don't tell her but I watch for the lower 3 leaves to die before I actually harvest and not strictly by the calendar.) I always add bone and blood meal to the planting holes. Your spacing sounds awesome--talk about getting increased yields!
This is great info. I’ve been toying with the idea of planting garlic. I didn’t realize it was so easy!
I was just thinking, hey it's garlic time! Planting mine today
Thanks for the timely video, we need to get ours in the ground pronto. Headed to your site now to order some of your new seed garlic!
Great info ! ...and I appreciate periods of no talking, it's so enjoyable to watch to working with the garlic.
I love planting and growing garlic! It's soooo easy! And I love garlic!
Garlic is one of my favorite things to eat.
But i have never grown it.
Looks like i have something new to try and grow.
Well, I put my MIgardener garlic in the ground today. I hope I'm not too late. I have never grown garlic before so I only ordered 3 heads, which gave me 17 cloves. If this works out well, I will probably increase the amount next year. Thanks Luke, for your great products and great videos. I have learned a lot from you.
You could also just save some of the ones you have and replant. Never buy garlic again!
Thanks Luke, got my garlic from you and planted yesterday.
Love your channel Luke! Thanks for keeping me inspired! (planted a fall garden this year! peas are up!)
Eddie Way to go! Don’t forget spinach, lettuce, radishes, and most of all garlic!
Good one Luke. The wife and I are going to get some into the ground here in Ontario tonight. A bit late but I hope it will be ok. We had a heck of a late potato harvest this year. But it was bountiful!
Just got my garlic in the mail.. planting this weekend.. first time ever for garlic.. super pumped.. thanks for the info and the great seeds
Nice garlic planting episode. I agree with ignoring the spacing suggested by seed companies, or experts. I plant intensively, and I also stagger the rows to maximize space, and my garlic came out beautifully. I found that 3 inches apart worked well and gave me just enough room to harvest at the end.
Garlic is one of the easiest plants to grow indoors with nothing more then a decent grow light. You can also skip the dormancy stage groweing indoors. My garlic usually takes about ten days to poke out of the ground. I like to soak the cloves in water over night. Are you saving money? IDK probably not but if you like to garden and know where your food comes from its worth it.
mattzx77 it’s healthier as well
I knownhe doesn't suppory doing it but, I've taken spott3d ends from the grocery store cloves and planted them for years. It works. I get a full head of garlic everytime. I do the same with onions and potatoes. I've done it in pots and inground. Doesn't matter. Will also do it with pineapples in ckmtainers. I'll get a pineapple in 2 years or so. My b.i.l that lives in Florida started doing the pineapples inground and has a whole crop of them now. They got 26 this past year.
@@kiki29073 I do the same because I don't want to just toss those onion and garlic ends in compost pile but I can't get all the heirlooms at the grocery store so I still like to try the different ones I can find from the seed sellers, then I can replant those ends too.
Saving money?the last time I was at the grocery store garlic was almost 4 dollars a pound. I harvested almos 30 pounds. 80 good sized bulbs
@@ermspa9373Nov 2022: $8.75 a lb for garlic heads at an Amish farm in SE Pennsylvania!!!
I believe the way of offsetting the rows that way is called "staggered column" or "staggered row".
I have a balcony garden, and I've always planted my plants this way to save space in containers. 👍
Love it! got my garlic from you guys a few days ago. Put it in yesterday.
Luke, I love your videos, and the effort you put into getting a lot of info out in a very enjoyable manner.
I hate to be "that guy", however, those are not 2" on center. They are 4" on center. Yes they have 2" on each side, but "on center" is a spacing term, from the center of one object to the center of another object. It's not a reference to how much room is on each side of the plant to grow. I only bring this up because a lot of people won't understand that your definition differs from what is universally understood otherwise. If you put studs in a house 16" on center, they are 16" from the center of one stud to the center of next stud.
I estimate by appearance that that is a 36" bed. At 2" on center, 8 bulbs would only add up to a total of 16" long, then add 2" on each end, you'd be at 20", which is way shy of filling it end to end, which you did, in this video. 8 cloves 4" apart = 32", with a little space at the ends.
Many people will not understand this, and put them 2" apart, and thus be too close together
Planning to plant garlic for the first time so excited. Thank you so much for the helpful video!
Same here! Good luck!!
Yes. I got my garlic in my containers last week. :) our first estimated frost date is sept. 30th. I’m growing Musik, Bavarian Purple, and Chinese pink. The first two are hard neck but the other one I think it is a semi hard/soft neck. However I saw no neck in the middle of my Christmas near pink I harvested this year.
Yes!! I use the triangle method in most of my plantings. Glad you shared that!
I have weather envy right now. Seriously. It’s gonna be 100 tomorrow ☹️. This is perfect timing cuz I am about to buy your garlic. Already have my cart ready. Gonna get a grab bag too 😁. It’s my 1st time growing this gem, so I appreciate the wisdom. Thanks for your help!
You may have weather envy NOW, but in December and January the shoe will be on the other foot. Actually, the snow boot will be on the other foot....
And good luck with your garlic. I've done onions, but not garlic yet
Oak Knob Farm Nope. I love the snow. I have heat intolerance so fall/winter 5eva
Always learning from you.
It’s just getting cool in Mid Michigan! Hoping to get my garlic in this weekend 🙂
I was counting all your pumpkins !! They're large ones too!! I grew white baby boos and they grew to size of ping pong balls. I got the seed from one I bought at the store last year. Cute little tops.
Wow, look at those pretty pumpkins 🧡
Hi Luke. Can you go over the best way to cure garlic and how long it should last if it's properly stored? And can you remove all the greens to use in cooking right before drying them?
I have about 1 more month then its garlic planting time!!! & I'm excited because I took your advice & bought shallot & onion seeds & they sprouted a few weeks ago & almost ready for transplant. Hoping to get good shallots & onion, my first time wish me luck!
This is more simple than I thought! I thought you needed to peel each clove too. lol I will be starting mine very soon!
Don't forget the best part of growing your own (hardneck) garlic; THE SCAPES! There are few things as delicious as my homemade garlic scape pesto! Sooooo goooood..........
What is the recipe for this pesto?
@@Marlgrump1 I don't have an exact recipe. I make it according to how many scapes I have. I roughly blend scapes, high quality parmesan cheese, pine nuts and high quality olive oil in a food processor. Add a dash of sea salt to taste. Play around with it. It is amazing and freezes well.
You can pickle them. They are awesome. I don't have a recipe. I just did them like a refrigerator pickle.
@@cindythomas681 Great idea!
I put my scapes in the food processor for a few spins to make them smaller then dry them, when they are completely dry I put them back in the food processor or blender and grind them up for a really nice mild garlic powder. I put them in little bags and give them to my family members every Christmas and they are thrilled with them.
for some reasons, I started my garlic planting last year, one type of garlic in two different spots and I got two different clearly different results. One, in a pot and one in the ground. In a pot has half full sun, while in the ground full after noon sun. The one in the ground seem to produce very large size; however, when time to harvest, they seemed to have split into individual cloves already in the ground. The one in the pots gave small garlic, but tight like they should be.
Thank you for this. I'm always experimenting too.
Thanks for sharing--going to try this for first time. I live in zone 7.
Awesome .. I will be planting some this year .. and love the pumpkins
I've planted hard-neck garlic with varied success in Michigan (6A Kalamazoo). The main difference seems to have been freeze/thaw cycles. This year I will be planting in raised beds with mulch over them once frost starts. This will allow the soil to maintain a more consistent temperature. In the past I've planted in containers both exposed and with bubble wrap. The containers that were exposed to several freeze/thaw cycles had poor results. The ones that were able to maintain more stable temperatures did better.
I suggest if you are going to grow in containers, make sure they are insulated in some way, or use like 5 gallon or larger and keep the cloves towards the center to avoid several temperature fluctuations.
what kind of mulch did you use?
Are those pumpkins behind you? They look awesome!! Thank you for the garlic info. I will be planting this fall and I've never grown it before. This video was great!!
Luke! You’re smart! I love it...so helpful!
came from your garlic harvest video so i can try growing my own later in the year!!
Very cool intro Luke.
Cool hand Luke
Re the recommended spacing-- I find that I need to allow enough space for huge growth-- storage onions, cylinder beets included (plant them 4-6 inches apart) Will be trying the garlic at this spacing too. After 24 yrs of enriching our soil everything grows "big" ....so big I can't hardly find my foot paths and am contemplating spacing the beds farther apart (no sides so it will be easy). Is there anything to this, where the plants grow SO big that we actually have to **increase** plant spacing? I mean my collards & kale are so overlapping at 18-24 inch spacing they look ridiculous. It's an ocean of greens!
Can’t help but peep at your pumpkin 😍
What a cheerful, well presented and inspiring video clip and so very helpful !
Not really a "start to finish" video though, would be a lot more interesting to see them when they're fully grown and harvested too. Good info though, thanks
That's what I thought until I saw that it was "planting" from start to finish. But what I wanted was "growing" from start to finish. He did finish planting after all...
There seems to be a lot of videos like this on CZcams. Everyone planting and not harvesting or showing us the full process.
Great. I intuitively did what you did with the spacing in my last Garlic bed in my open garden. It was very effective. I have a question about your wood chips outside the beds? I wish I had more space, but I don’t. What is under your wood chips in the paths? How do you handle weeds there? Do you have cardboard or what under the chips? Thanks yet again Luke.
I have never been successful growing garlic. Thanks for the tutorial. Going to try again.
Planting my garlic later today so perfect timing . Gonna get that extra space and remember to amend.
I like this guy. He's really good. And I'm from Ohio. ;-)
Columbus Ohio
How often do you have to replace the core in your raised beds?
wow I just love the way you show us how to plant the seeds. I think I bought the wrong garlic :( So I am sure I will be buying more from you. Thanks again
Thanks for this great video. So many tips! Bless.
But Luke.... How about those pumpkins!!! They look amazing! I kept wanting to say.... excuse me Luke... can you move over so I can see the pumpkins. :D
Cheeky Saver that is just 3 plants!!! It is epic.
Oh no I'm in trouble lol i planted 4 pumpkin plants.
🤣 I literally stopped the video to show my husband his pumpkins.
Minus all that powdery mildew.
Lol...I know this was a year ago but I remember (25 years ago) when I decided to compost our old Halloween pumpkins.....BIG mistake! Lol...yup....pumpkins everywhere that next year!!! Ah..stories of our beginning days!
THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN
Thank you, I am going to sow some cloves available in my kitchen today to start
Love your channel. Thanks for the help gardening. Planting garlic today on Vancouver Island.
appreciate this video! I planted the garlic, do I need to add straw or mulch fot the winter?
Yep, and remove comes Spring time
Dear MI Gardener, the video is a little incomplete presently, after planting the garlic what do u do? We’ll mulch it etc or cover it completely with soil?
Thanks
I cover bed with cardboard. After winter, its broken down and parts that arent, the garlic is determined and grows right thru it.
Easy, cheap ( free cardboard and the worms LOVE it) ) and works every time. .
Some say to cover with crushed leaves or straw up to 8" deep over winter! I'll be trying to grow garlic for first time. We'll see! lol
I grew garlic for the first time last year, mulched and covered w chicken wire to deter squirrels. Removed in spring once it started growing
@@elizabethw8616 in my experience squirrels don’t want anything to do with garlic! Wish I could say the same about the squirrels and brassicas! 😂

Hello! Was wondering if you have a video on harvesting garlic/
