Harvesting Your Garlic - The Definitive Guide For Beginners

- It Is Finally Time To Harvest Your Garlic. After 9 months or more of building (and bulbing!) up, the wait is over at last and Garlic harvest time is upon us! As a low-maintenance crop, the journey hasn’t taken a lot of effort, but we have played our part.
At planting, we ensured the proper time of year, depth, spacing, as well as soil type and of course lots of mulch. As spring rolled in, we were on deck again with fertilizing, watering, weeding, and for hardneck varieties, scape removal.
In this video, I’ll recap all of that good stuff, but the main focus here is the harvest. We’ll go over when to harvest, what to look for, how to dig up the bulbs, as well as drying, curing, and storing the heads of Garlic for long term storage.
It’s a biggie and we cover a lot. But Garlic is an important crop for many of us, so its best to get it right. The video does focus mostly on hardneck Garlic harvesting, but the same rules apply for softneck varieties as well, other than the scape removal. Garlic is Garlic after all. Enjoy!

Thanks for the subtle hint to harvest one to check about halfway through lol.
Possibly the clearest most informative without over verbage, and helpful tutorial I have seen. I will save this one. We all need these in these times especially on a fixed income.
Thanks so much bonnie, appreciate that! :-)

Excellent presentation. Just superior . Thank you so much.
been growing hard-neck for well over a decade...all his points are right on! ! wished I would've watch similar video in the days instead of learning from mistakes!
one thing guys, keep rotating your crops!
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I'm a first timer and my garlic grew like a champ. Then came the fear of NOW WHAT, because I need to harvest😮. Every question I had in my mind you answered. Thanks so much! Looking forward to more videos
@@stacy3005 awesome Stacy, happy to help! Once half the leaves die off, you're usually good to harvest. Let us know how it turns out!
Growing food should be something we all do on regular basis. My first garlic experiment is now on its way, thank you for the effort of making this great video!
The thought of multiplying your own food gives me such a kick lol I can't wait to see my cloves sprout!
It’s so cute/funny how gardeners smile & cock their heads to the side to show off their harvests in a proud way like it’s a newborn baby.
I love it !❤ 🙂.
🙄!
You're the only Channel I've watched that explained step by step and made it so easy. Thank you! I'm going to plant my garlic this fall
Thanks for that sonia! Best of luck planting, can't wait to hear about your harvest next summer! :-)
Great tutorial on growing/harvesting garlic. Thanks for sharing!
Great video and an even better Saskatchewan Roughriders hat!
I learned I need to be more aware of maturity dates. Thx for the common sense advice.
No problem, best of luck with your garlic!!
I have learned a lot about growing garlic. Thank you. I didn't know about leaving them in the ground through winter. I thought they would be dead. So glad for your advice.
They need a cold period to vernalise, in other words make the cloves in the new plant head.
I really enjoyed this video. You are a great communicator and teacher. Thank you for what you do! May God continue to bless you and keep your harvests bountiful!
I've just harvested 30 garlic plants, FANTASTIC VIDEO
30 bulbs? Right on Mike!! At current organic prices, that a nice sum you got there!
I grew garlic for the first time this year. Just harvested yesterday. I was so very happy with large bulbs. I am curing them now in the basement. Thank you for all the great info.
What a well-made, useful video. Really nicely shot, too.
I'm growing garlic for the first time this year, and have just harvested the first few bulbs. Will definitely follow your advice re hanging/curing - thank you!
thank you, love this
Cheers warren, thanks for watching!

So next up... A video on how to eat those scapes!

I agree, I would hate to harvest those and leave them to waste.
We harvest them, then into the food processor, and into ice cube trays....ready when desired
Great job presenting!
Very good video, like the weeding, cant believe videos tha have weeds and using grass clipings in the garden. Great job.
Yay! So excited for when the garlic is ready. That leaf tip is a good one for not harvesting too late or too early
Feels like ages ago when we planted...and STILL 4-5 months to go!
I'm glad I found your site. I planted my first round of garlic last fall and can't wait to see what I get.
So exciting Barb! You'll have to let us know how it goes!

Best garlic How To video I've seen uet! Great job!!!
Another excellent informative video. You answered all the questions I had without me asking them
Cheers Randy, thanks for watching! 🙂
We learnt so much this year about growing garlic with tomatoes. I will also plant later than Nov as in London we haven't had snow, like we have been having mild winters for years now. I might also freeze the bulbs for 6 weeks or so before planting.
I was looking for a video to start garlic planting this year but i was’t sure about a few things in the process but I found your channel and I had all the questions answered with out actually do it. Thank you so much for your easy way to explain it. God bless you 🙏
Hey, that's awesome Oscar, happy to help!
THANK YOU, Jeff!!!🤗💓
No problem! 🙂
Perfect explanation for a newby garlic planter in Australia 2024. Planted out a week or so ago and look like they are thriving.
Thank you💕💕👌👌
Just found your channel. Thank you so much. The easiest and clearest to follow and understand. My daughter and I have developed serious untreatable medical conditions but eating home grown fruit and veges is one of the best things we can do for ourselves. I know we’ll be able to grow our food without drama and successfully. Good luck with your harvest and health. ❣️🙏🌾
This is such helpful information, I was doing it all wrong and I had no idea when to harvest or anyting. Thank you for these videos
Cheers Casper....once you get the timeline down for hardneck garlic, the crop itself becomes MUCH easier. Best of luck!
Thank you sir, this is a great video. I am going to give them a try this early Fall.
Thank you for this video!
Well done, sir! Really appreciate your videos!

Great video. I'll tell you what I told my friend, Corporals Corner, you guys remind me of each other. Just went and mulched my garlic plants with jointer shavings from my shop. He has a great channel.
I love Garlic, and grow yearly.😀
Can't wait to try em out!
Best of luck JO! :-)
Im in New Zealand so just harvested 50 bulbs of Creole hard neck. First time I've grown a hard neck variety. Its been a very wet first month of summer so the bulbs were a little wet when harvested but had to get them up. The commercial grower I bought the seed cloves from said to bundle in tens and dry for a month upside down. However I hung them individually bulb side down on my clothes drying rack. As they were a little damp, this maximised air flow around each bulb. I have 50 more bulbs of Keeper and 50 bulbs of Fire soft necks yet to harvest. All of these were planted in May. Its now getting less wet so I can reduce watering of the soft necks and I will plait them in tens to dry once harvested.
Definitely smart to hang them separate if they are a little wet

Wonderful video. Thank you!

I like the idea of mixing organic fertilizer with water in the can. I’ve seen so many others do the side dressing method which requires more effort. I will use my organic Miracle Gro. Thank you for always keeping it simple and doable.
I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship where are you from?
Some great advice for beginners, that digging method you show is likely to end up damaging some bulbs, garlic bruises just like most veggies and fruits, hugely reducing the storage time. Often my soil is soft enough that mine pull out easily, otherwise it’s easy to insert a garden fork deep under the roots and just lift them a bit, usually by prying them upward. Happy growing everyone
Very true....gotta be careful or you ruin the storage! Totally agree.
Just started doing bit growing my own little bits started with strawberry in a pot and herbs in pots, going to try garlic as eat loads. Thank you for your knowledge.
Great to hear Esme! Every little bit counts!
Is the first video explain the whole process even curing I been asking for this thanks you so much you did a perfect video🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hey, glad you liked! Thanks for watching!
I agree! Best video explains it well
Enjoying these garlic videos..
Despite my Italian upbringing and amazing memories my grandfathers urban vegetable garden I’ve only just started to have a go at growing edible plants.. herbs, garlic and chillies
I’m in Perth, west Australia so got my garlic started off a little late at the end of autumn rather than the start but they’re growing (only planted 5) and I’ll be happy to at least harvest something I’m guessing around January (mid summer) it gets pretty hot here in summer so we will see.. but you can’t learn anything if you don’t have a go..
Looking forward to building some proper raised beds in the backyard when the weather starts to warm up for next years gardening endeavours
Right on, garlic can be a challenge in warmer climates....still though that's great! Let us know how it goes!
Thank you!
God bless.!
Cheers Cecilia, thanks for watching! 🙂
Thank you i learned a lot from this video
I just harvested my garlic today, over 100 heads. They're all hanging in bunches from the rafters in my shop, and OMG it REALLY smells garlicky out there, lol.
I planted my first crop Oct ‘23 and the leaves are starting to brown now June 3, ‘24. Looking forward to harvest!
Right on Peter! Let us know how you do!
Thank you this helped me
Cheers heidi, best of luck with the harvest!
I'm happy to see you grew garlic in fabric buckets. I'm no longer able to work the ground I have to plant a thousand and more cloves, but I've been hesitant to try planting in buckets when our mid-Maryland (zone 6) winters can see temperatures well below 10 F.
I can get fat, purple tinged garlic bulbs for a dollar each from a supermarket (the gods know where the store gets them). So, I think I'll plant 4 buckets of supermarket garlic this fall and see how the winter shakes out.
Thanks for the inspiration. I've missed homegrown garlic these last 7 years.
They grow AMAZING in the fabric bags. They really do. They love the drainage, the aeration, and they are plenty big enough! Best of luck!
Sooo great full for this video!!!!!! 👏
Hey thanks, appreciate it!
Your videos are excellent.
Hey, thanks so much Isaiah! :-)

Thanks valenzsa! Yes, garlic is a fall-planted crop. Its nice though because its planted after the craziness of the summer season is over! :-)
I actually refrigerated mine for 4 weeks than plant in the spring
Interesting 💗
Garlic IS interesting.... I agree!
Great video, I've been debating about harvesting or not harvesting lol. I think another week or so...
Nice! I've got at least a month to go
Good stuff
Thanks man, appreciate it!
Great 🎉video
Thanks! :-)
I thought I would come to CZcams to see if it was time to harvest my garlic since a tornado hit our town this weekend and pretty much wiped out my crop, bending all of them over. Since you said that some people bend the stocks over, I’m hoping that just leaving them where they are, and letting the dirt dry out for a few days that I will be able to successfully get some bulbs out of the crop. I tried propping up the plants with more soil, but they just keep lying over because they were probably whipped around like a blender.
Very informative. I am always impressed by how straightforward to make it sound. Years of practice will help I am sure. I have just grown garlic for the first time (soft-neck) and recently harvested around 90 bulbs. 20 or so I hung in my poly-tunnel and these have dried well. The rest I hung in an outside shed. They are taking longer to dry and I have notice that a few of then are now growing stems like your hard-neck scapes and one has flowered. I am thinking it is perhaps not warm/airy enough and should move then to my poly-tunnel. Any advice would be appreciated and will these flowering bulbs still be ok to eat?
That's a alsome video thank you
Thanks Timothy, appreciate that!
Thanks again and
Cheers Phyllis!
Not forgetting to mention, it will also keep vampires away too

Thanks for sharing your experience of growing garlic. I saw the kale at the end of this. I have tried many times to grow kale from seeds that I bought. Not success.
Oh shoot, did they just not germinate at all?
Thank now i know i plant garlic for our kitchen...
Well I've come to the conclusion I should've just planted the garlic cloves I noticed were sprouting on the counter around October, where I'm at in Colorado we do have mild winters in the banana belt but I'm still thinking I missed the boat on planting them. We get hard freezes for a few days only up to a month on end or more, and often times when we have short freezes the weather will be in the mid 60s for weeks following teetering around 32 most nights.
Moving from Florida to a different climate zone was one thing, but man wrapping your head around the super variable mountain weather on top of it is a whole new ball game lol. We've gotten snow as late as the end of May and as early as September.
Thank you very much for an amazing channel and awesome uploads ❤️🔥
I just want to know, if we can cut off parts of the leaves, to nibble on or to cook, while its still growing...?

🙂 Thanks for the support Lauren!
Comprehensive!!!
Thanks for a great vid!😊
I watched it last year but forgot all the details about cutting the scapes off so I think I've messed up, I cut them off too early, as soon as they appeared...
In my opinion that’s not going to be a problem, when they are very young, usually before they curl, you can pull the scape out of the plant, on the end you will find the most tender little portion, note….don’t pull real hard , you don’t want to damage the roots.
(From Zone 5)....Thank you for your thorough instructions on everything. Some videos leave me with too many questions. I find after watching you they leave out quite a bit of steps...so now I know to come to you for complete instructions.
I've noticed your grow bags with garlic. I only tried these bags once, mulched with straw, and found that my rosemary, thyme +.... did not come back as they always do in the ground. I thought because of the material.. too much air and cold. Do you leave yours outside? Cover them?..... what did I do wrong? I was quite upset since my plants were about 4 years old and so nice. I discovered these bags and thought I could have more space in my garden plus be able to move them around. 😔
We get through " a bulb" a day here :)
Heh heh....I hear you on that one Joseph!
Wow garlic
The best Norma! 🙂
