Botanical Interests has the BEST seed packets! So much information inside and out. Plus their online exclusives are pretty interesting. I have pretty low germination with my Baker Creek seed as well. My friend laminated her HVS art and uses them to mark her storage bins.

I think an important point to remind people also, is that sometimes it is best to purchase seeds for your zone also. Or, purchase seeds from a Company whose zone is closest to your hardness zone. For example, there are 2 small seed companies around MT where the seeds are developed for the Rocky MT region which I will purchase from… While I love the packaging of Botanical Interests seeds, I have a difficult time getting any of their seeds to germinate for me in Zone 3b4a Montana. Even though those seeds come from CO, their hardiness zone is 2 zones away from mine (6a). None of the seeds I have purchased over the past 2 years germinated. However, RHShumway seeds (located in Randolph, WI zone 5a) always germinate for me.

One thing to mention is look for local or regional seed growers. Here in Oregon we have several that are geared towards seeds that are grown locally and selected from those plants that do the best in the region.
Adaptive Seeds in Sweet Home, Oregon is one that is a standout to me for Pacific Northwest gardeners. (no affiliation by the way) Every seed packet shows the germination rate for the seed harvest you are buying. That is huge to me.

Be aware that those calculators aren't a good gauge... they don't take into account who in the house likes certain veggies and who won't eat them, adults vs children portions, who has a hearty appetite and who eats very little, etc. I can tell you that for just me and my husband it would tell us that we need a certain amount of strawberry plants, but we LOVE strawberries and could eat them all day every day for snacks, breakfasts, in desserts, etc., so it's going to be way low. We only eat pintos a couple times a year, so it would be way over on those. You really have to just think about how often you like to eat certain things, who in the house eats it, how much, and figure it out based on your best judgment, whether or not you're putting them away/canning/freezing, if you want to have some to give away.

I agree with you on Baker Creek. I am now at the point where I only buy unique and hard to find varieties. I have had really great luck with Botanical Interests and Pinetree seeds. I really value that they have all the important info on the seed packet. I also like to buy once and while from Eden Brothers for some of the more rare wild flower varieties they carry. Also for certain veggies and flowers if my favorite is a very common variety I will purchase seeds from dollar tree and dollar general. As I don't need massive amounts of seeds. I may only need a few plants so even those small packets will last me a few seasons. I also now make an effort to save my own seeds as well. I have a small mason jar filled with kale seeds. I saved from snapdragons, marigolds, cosmos, tomatoes, zinnias, green beans, celery, beets, pansy, sunflower seeds, asters, peppers, onions, and nasturtium. Saving seeds when you can is a huge money saver and it allows me to put my money to trying new varieties.

Good job and assessment on sourcing seeds. I totally agree and have the same observations. Every seed company has its knitch and they all have value but you have to match up what your needing and going for and it looks different for each individual. Having an honest view that was in no way negative but informative is lovely. We have to remember that we need honest reviews but not everyone agrees on what they like best. But i felt you were reading my mind as you were reviewing. It makes me feel like I know more about seeds and have more experience and opinion than I realize. Thank you...this might help me answer some questions as I decide what I still need to order. Im super late in getting everything I wanted...and have way too much of what I am curious about...ugh. Start buying to early you run out of money for the things you need to restock that are your most loved and important seeds...lol I think deciding what you need to concentrate on growing the most for what you dont want to be without is key....then find others who are growing the things you dont have room for and purchase from others or trade. Its hard to narrow down and keep focused but when your sitting around all winter without the things you use the most....it kind of gives you more of an idea where you need to focus. Thank you for putting out such important content....Im sure my garden will be more successful because of those willing to bring others along on the journey. I truly wouldnt be pushing to make it work without encouragement and strategy!

I think another great thing in figuring out how much you’ll plant is how much your family likes an item. A calculator might say 40 tomato plants for instance but I know in my family my daughter doesn’t like them and we don’t eat tons, I don’t like ketchup but do like them fresh so we wouldn’t plant as much as another family our size.

I don't use a heating mat so I donated it to our local Montessori High School program that grows and sells at the SFC framers market where I buy all of our eggs and meat and veggies I don't grow. I still haven't learned how to use the red/ blue light. But love the trays and pots. I find your youtube delightful, insightful and helpful.Bootstrip seems to be a great company based on my first order. Those calculators that say how many plants per person are not reliable IMO. One person may eat much more of a certain produce then others, and depends on how the produce is used. A new grower should grow what they know they will eat fresh, and have a back up plan to preserve extra. If they plant 100 cabbage plants (who has that much room?), and bugs get them, what a waste! Learn to grow first, they figure out how much you CAN grow, and how much you use/preserve it. :)
