This week TheCarGuys take the new Ferrari 488 GTB and test it versus Damianâs long-term 458 Italia. Which is the better in terms of performance, noise, exterior looks, quality of interior and long-term ownership and value?
Many of you have asked whether itâs worth upgrading from a 430 to a 458, or whether itâs worth saving up for the new 488 instead of going for a used 458. SO WHAT SMASHED THE WINDOW?. We reckon it was a stone flicked up by the passing green Land Rover. Gravel driveways often get stuck between the tread of the tyres on big SUVs, and then are flung out when they accelerate on tarmac roads.

I would strongly encourage fast frame dashcams to record all-around coverage of your beautiful cars. Being able to frame check for damning evidence and a number plate would be most satisfying. The mobius cameras are great for capturing side views and are very discrete for capturing 'supermarket car park rash' and vandalism incidents. USB power banks can enable several days of protection without killing your car battery.

Update: check out projectile which seems to become airborne as vehicle passes. Immediately prior to impact, you can see it has a blurry speck located at the rear of car guys head @18:49
Due respect, I donât believe a stone the size of which would be lodged in a tire tread, traveling in a parallel path like that can impart enough force to make the window fail. The failure was obviously caused by stress on the window. What would cause that much stress? It seems to me to be one of three scenarios. First, and least likely, it couldâve resulted from a manufacturing defect in the glass itself. Secondly, could have resulted from improper mounting of the window. Perhaps the vehicle was worked on previously. Other than that it may have resulted from a projectile originating from a location perpendicular to the vehicle.

The 458 is better looking, better sounding and better value. The 458 has already a classic smell đ
So many variables, and you should also note that the 458 is depreciating. Better value is a direct function of usage and inflation.
And as a drivers car, the 488 is MILES better than the 458.
@@AB-80X But the interior is almost the same, and the speedometer is the same, well, the 458 italia originally would have a 370km/h speedometer, but they leaved it in 360km/h instead 370km/h, so the 458 would be faster than 488 GTB for 10km/h, I don't take account the want everyone call top speed, because top speed is only a speed record, isn't the max, the max is what gives you the speedometer, the 488 GTB is 360km/h and the 458 have the same, but originally gonna had a 370km/h speedometer, if you don't believe I will let here a link of some images official video of the 458 italia.

@@playgt326 Best I ever personally saw in a 458 Italia was 335 on gps @ 8900 rpm. So far the best I've seen in a 488 Spider was 341 @ 7500 rpm. The Italia was definitely maxed, as we could pin it for about 4-5 minutes. The 488 may have had a kph or two left, but it was pretty much done at that speed. If a 458 runs 339 gps, that's definitely only in perfect conditions where the DA is low and temps are down.
I like nearly everything more in the 458

458 by far, I was driving it for about an hour in 2013 and I still have smile on my face. That acceleration from 120 to 220kmh and noise from the engine... my god...

And thatâs the reason why Iâm on my second 458. Had a 458 Italia, now in a Spider. Roof down in a tunnel, 3rd gear Race mode and just listen to that engine scream all the way up the Rev counter!
My dealer tried to tempt me with a Rosso Dino 488 GTB but no sale. Go with your heart and emotion. Leave the head for the tricky stuff!

Drove 458, mclaren 650 and huracan today at the track... 458 italia all day! It was just more fun!
The 458 Italia is one of the greatest fucking cars I've ever seen. Looks, sound, handling, character, you name it! It's all there! Super special car through and through.
I must have watched this at least 3-4 times over the last month. In my opinion I love the 458 and would have it over the 488. That being said, I do believe that these are two of the most beautiful cars on the road.....I will have one soon!

The F458 looks better. The F488's body looks over designed and messy where as the F458 body looks cleaner. F458 interior, especially the dash looks better too. Engines with turbos can also fail so its great the F458 doesn't have one and is naturally aspirated. The engine/exahust noise on the F458 sounds heaps better then the F488. Unfortunately the F488 and the Corvette Z06 look similar which makes the F458 look more distinct.

Best video yet and looks professional. Maybe you were hit by an air gun pellet? Having seen that, I want to go get my side windows filmed so they donât shatter in such a dramatic way. Fortunately you were not too distracted by it, didnât panic and kept the car on the road - good job.

Thank you so much for this comparison! Been waiting for a detailed look at those two next to each other and pretty sure there aren't any on yt. Anyone who has driven and heard a 458 is so disappointed by the sound of the 488 that nobody really cares how much more torque you have because the 458 isn't that much slower and sounds like heaven. Pretty sure there will be a significant price difference between those two in 40 Years.

I think the Ferrari 488 GTB look better, it is faster and handle better but the 458 Italia exhaust sounded so much better then the 488 GTB. It is a very a hard decision.

I always preferred the 458, but after I drove the 488, it sure was 488 !! And I did not talk silly, the 488 in the real world is much faster 0-100km / h and in the top speed, in the gps, the 488 have already been seen arriving at 216mp / h, and one more great
Marcelo S Speed can't be all that matters my friend. Speed gets expensive quickly, unless you have access to a track. Most tracks are only open on the weekends. I wish you success and I hope you are able to enjoy one as an owner. Or the other. Good luck.

Agree, 488 is much quicker in a straight line and on a roadcourse. 8mph more in the quarter mile, loads more torque. I am not sure where these guys get their data. Of course the 458 engine is better sounding and that means a lot, but it really is the only feature that is better unless you count price.

458 for the naturally aspirated engine and the sound. Plus the 488 is so damn fast, I rather redline more often than to have to stop. I really don't think I need that power in my life. Around 500hp is perfect for me on any 3000 to 3500 ish pound car. Honestly anything over or around 350 on a 3000 pound car is fine with me.

First 2000 kms of my 458 have been better than I could have imagined. Still love the 488 but I enjoy the simpler lines of the 458
I like the shape of the wheels on the 458 too. I always liked the the overall styling 458 over the 488. Not sure I like the white though. It has to be a red for me, that's a Ferrari. Especially if I can have just one.

Very enjoyable vlog...Damien your a very lucky man to have both and the rest of your fantastic garage. If I had the choice of these two it'd be the 458 the best modern Ferrari since the 355 and a far most evocative design, whereas the 488 appears more function over form. At this time, I don't think 458 prices will raise but remain firm around ÂŁ160k+ for spiders and low mileage examples, whereas the 488 will depreciate further, mainly because of its Turbo engine which I don't think will experience a growth in appreciation (in collectiability terms) the way the 458 will do as time passes. But if the 488 is a car that your not going to hang onto and creates an avenue to a "Pista"...well then it's money well spent!

I bought the 458 and the 430 when I came to CA, sold them and bought another 458 in 2017....Mostly rode the Repsol Honda motorcycle when I was in CA because the traffic is so bad

For a guy like me working in a warehouse, currently driving a ÂŁ4,000 VW Passat I can only dream of these cars but these videos certainly give me a glimpse in to a dream world.
Like most I have a car at certain price points. After the M Sport estates, on to the 911âs, when I crack ÂŁ100,000 in dream money itâs the 458.
I had five laps at Elvington in one as birthday presents, even though Iâd guess I got to 60 in 10 seconds and barely hit 80mph it blew my mind to drive such an incredible car. For me as beautiful and classy as cars come.
Great job guys! Especially appreciated by me, who 2 weeks ago bought his first ever Ferrari, a 2015 458 Spider! I have a few American sports cars (Vipers and Vettes) but I must admit this is a masterpiece - truly a piece of art. Glad I did not decide to go with the 488.

My opinion based upon having corvettes for 20+ years and Vipers for 10 years (still have several of each) is that my first and only Ferrari is (as stated in my initial post) - an amazing car. Intoxicating, exhilarating, breathtaking and undeniably different than any American sports car.

I actually have to say I prefer the looks of the 488.
However what this video showed me was that the 458 features a more thought-out and intricate aero and overall design. More work has gone into it which really surprised me.
Thatâs because Ferrari kind of became a sell out after 2015. Pushing out new vehicles too quickly & making them with not much thought. Not too bothered anymore, all about how much money they can make.

I do think that wireless keys are ok but I prefer a normal key. I don't like that wireless keys can be hacked to steal your car.

Can you please compare the 360 CS to the 458 Italia. They are roughly the same price right now (US) but in terms of technology, miles apart. Did I say please?
You did say please, Tom. This is possible but a bit one-sided and it only makes sense to compare it to the Speciale - that would be apples with apples
While Iâm not the biggest fan of Ferrariâs mid engine v8 series of cars as a whole, I definitely like the 458 over the 488.

Supremely good comparison and the reason why comparison reviews are the most informative for making a qualified decision. The side-by-side, split view was worth whatever effort it took to produce. Ah, the contrast stitching reflecting and distracting in the windshield (thx for repeatedly noting this in videos). Now, how about Ferrari California n/a vs T review? The power difference and numerical results are notably drastic YET itâd be interesting to hear about the impressions and simple fun factor.
Personally i would go for the 458 in the same color scheme as your 488. That window scared the $h!t out of me. If it was a rock from the land rover i hope it didnât damage the door paint aswell

A few years ago, I had a window shatter on a 599 GTO just like that; and the car wasnât even moving, just parked in the driveway. Very strange. Good video.
